Cher as Catwoman?

And The Dark Knight sequel gossip continues. Could Cher be in line to play Catwoman in the next Batman installment? The British newspaper The Telegraph is citing a “studio executive” source, claiming that Cher us “Nolan’s first choice” for the role.

“He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years,” says the Telegraph’s source. “The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry’s purring creations.”

While I agree that Catwoman should be given a Nolanverse-style reboot, if she were to make an appearance in the next Batman film, Cher seems like a strange choice even considering Nolan’s history. Of course, The Telegraph is known for it’s gossipy/tabloid like reports, and unless an actual source is clearly identified, I wouldn’t bet 25 cents on a story like this one. But let us pretend for a second that this rumor is true: I would expect a heavy fan backlash over the casting choice. Not that Nolan hasn’t encountered adverse reaction in his past decisions. From what I remember, when the casting announcement was first made, most fans hated the idea of Heath Ledger as The Joker.

Discuss: What do you think about the slight possibility of Cher playing The Catwoman in Nolan’s third Batman film?

Who even knows if Catwoman will be a featured villain in the third film. Here is what We Know So Far:

  • June 29th: Gary Oldman suggested The Riddler might be the main villain during an interview with /Film. It was unclear if he had any information regarding that possible direction, or if he was just thinking out loud.
  • July 3rd: Goyer admitted to BatmanOnFilm that the realistic tone of the Nolanverse would prevent some of the more unrealistic characters from making an appearance: “You’re not going to see Clayface in these films”
  • July 9th: David Goyer told /Film at the Junket: ‘There are dozens, if not hundreds of other characters that are possibilities. Everyone says you have you use the Penguin or Catwoman. Well, I completely disagree.”
  • July 21st: Goyer admits to MTV that he has “talked loosely about” the theme for the third film. And of course, the theme has always been connected with the choice of villains.
  • July 27th: The New York Daily News reported that Angelina Jolie had inquired about playing the role.
  • August 15th: Variety reports that Warner Bros has offered Christopher Nolan a deal for a third film, but Nolan hasn’t yet signed on: “We have no idea where Chris is going with this,” Alan Horn said. “We haven’t had any conversations with him about it.”

I just hope whoever they bring on is because of their talent and not because they're hot or 'in'. I'd rather see someone like Cate Blanchett play catwoman than Anjelina Jolie or Cher, who are more known for their looks. Just like how Maggie Gyllenhaal was far superior than Katie Holmes and blended better with the overall cast because of her talent.
  • Baron Von Cheddar
While I'm not opposed to the use of Catwoman the next film (she could fit easier than most into the Nolanverse), I am opposed to the use of Cher in ANY film.

That said, Nolan appears uninterested in giving us what we say we want, and is more inclined to present something that we always needed.
  • brbs
I've never been a fan of catwoman, but if Nolan somehow manages to make her half as dark as Heath's Joker than i might care.
  • gah
    Provisionally titled The Caped Crusader????

    Shooting in Vancouver next year????

    Cher???

Speaking of the Depp rumors as fact?

You guys are fools to believe this.
  • NINJARTIST
I just keep reminding myself that Nolan never intended to make a third film... I hope that for his franchise's sake, he does, but people automatically assume he will.

This is BS... Amusing BS however. :)

That has to be the worst casting rumor of year...the British press should be ashamed, they run rumors based unnamed sources' opinions...there are never direct sources to casting or agents...or this is Cher trying to create buzz for whatever project she's promoting this decade...Zzzzz....

Gemma Arterton or Marion Cotillard should be cast if the role ever makes the final script which it most likely won't...because the whole cat mask aspect will ruin the film...Goyer is right realistic characters are going to be key in the new films...she could be just a notorious female "cat burglar"...leave out the lame pointed ears...I'm just happy Robin and Batgirl will never enter this world....

One blog suggested "Black Mask" he was an unknown character to me, but seems like a great choice. Maybe not as a main villain but a great face for the existing mob.

The Riddler on the other hand seems too weak of villain now that the next movie is going to have be on the same level as the Joker. Someone suggested that he could be a brutal serial killer racking up high numbers. I think a "Seven"-ish style storyline could work if the murders are starting to be pinned on Batman. Considering Nolan borrowed from Heat and The Wire, it wouldn't be so out there.

    It's the fucking Telegraph....

Let me guess, the Telegraphs "source" is someone who works at The Enquirer? British tabloids are on a fucking hilarious run lately. Nolan's camp haven't even spoken about working on a third film. Much less begin casting ideas.
  • Captain Awesome
    CM,

The only thing Nolan so-called "borrowed" from Heat. Was the homage at the beginning of the film using Fictner. That's the first time I've heard of The Wire reference myself?
  • Christopher Marc
    @Cap

Well a lot of the look I felt came from Michael Mann's films. If you noticed there weren't any CGI buildings/trains like in the first film. A lot of chopper/exterior building shots, which Mann does frequently more often than most directors. Also the whole transport truck scene had an influence from Heat as well, using it in the assault on the armored truck.

My comparison to the Wire has to do more with the interaction between the Mayor, Gordan and DA's office...We didn't see any of that kind of behind the scenes interaction in the first film.

These are just my observations I'm sure people see influences from other sources. I'm not saying it's unoriginal for borrowing ideas, every single film takes material or ideas from other projects. Nolan seems to use sources from excellent material which I applaud him for.
  • One can never trust the British newspapers, they lie more than tabloids here. That is to say, if I saw this in the National Enquirer in the US, I'd put more stock in it than reading it from some English rag.

Cher is too damn old first off, she'd slip a hip easily. heh
  • Captain Awesome
    CM,

Other than the bank cameo by Fictner. I really didn't get the feel of Heat throughout the film. Much less The Wire. But to each their own.

I will say in spots it did feel like a great slow build-up. Like what was found in Godfather 2. Just before shit gets ugly :)

    eltardo,

    Pretty much.

whatever nolan decides on i imagine will b awesome! concerning villain and actor/actress..

im hoping for them to bring Bane into the films. the villain who broke the bat! he extremely clever and super strong off his face on venom. Annnd in his plan to get batman he broke every1 out of arkham to tire batman out as he has to collect them all. so therefore you can have loads of smaller villains playing minor rolls!
  • Serious
    Rachel McAdams for catwoman
  • Danny Bell
    NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ;-D
  • Tagg2
Hmmm...the collective age here must be 20. If you are older than 35 than you would remember that all 3 catwomen from the 60's tv show were women and not girls. i think Cher would kick ass but most here just see age and not talent. Talent trumps looks/age anyday folks!
  • You know The Telegraph is NOT a tabloid newspaper.
  • AntoBlueberry
I read the same thing back in 1989. And they wrote at the time that Dustin Hoffman was signed as the Penguin and Michael J. Fox as Robin.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    Jennifer Garner - Catmwoman

    Phillip Seymore Hoffman - Penguin

    Edward Norton - The Riddler

    IMO
  • jw
I'd like Anjelica Huston if it were going in a twilight years direction (eff cher) - or is A.H. a little TOO old now? It's all just bunk so far I guess - whatever.
  • Rachel McAdams- Hollywoods best female talent. A good choice.

As for Cher- Maybe 30 years ago. Come on, she would need oxygen in between action scenes. This will never happen. keep the rumors flying!
  • orange cinema
rumor or not, please sweet jesus no catwoman! thank god goyer said he doesn't believe penguin or catwoman need to be used. black mask is a joke of a villian too.

btw, riddler ala se7en sounds cool as hell, but i doubt they'll go that way.
  • Of course it's all ridiculous speculation, but...

assuming it is true, well then I have full faith in Nolan to make this a good performance. Absurd as Cher can be, she can act. That being said, I can't imagine anyone wanting her cast, including myself.
  • RichYan33
So they are going to try and negate all the money they made on "Dark Knight"?
  • jimbo stewart
The Brits are ANIMALS. They will print anything.

Remember that bit about Britney Spears being in Faster Pussycat Kill Kill?

That lie originated from a British paper.

    Don't believe everything you read.
  • Harrison and Steve
just because the forces of suck are back at work,

Do you have to help them?

Jolie/ mcAdams? are you on crack?
  • ticl
Cher will play Cat-lady not Catwoman.
  • I think Cher as Catwoman is just crazy enough to work actually. It seems pretty unlikely but I think if he does Catwoman it has to be someone unexpected. I'd rather eat poo than watch Garner, Macadams or Jolie as Catwoman.
  • starscream9289
    how about NO CATWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how about someone we haven't seen before?!?!?!?!
  • YoungZe
Cher as Catwoman? Downright retarded. Catwoman in the next Batman Movie? Downright retarded.
  • Adam K
Batman will be portrayed as the "villian" and the "villian" will be the "hero", much like the penguin in the second one. Batman will then have to find a way to prove the "hero" to be the "villian" like he did at the press conference audio in "batman returns" It has to be a character that has something to gain from Batman being hated by the entire city, I don't know, while I like Batman a lot, I'm more of a marvel guy.
  • gavin
    I nominate Meryl Streep.
  • Jim Jones
LOL, maybe twenty years ago! I dont think Cher can pull it off now, isnt she like almost 60 or something? How about Angelina Jolee? Now THAT would work!

Everybody cool down. Putting the validity of this story aside, let's just examine it as a theory.

I really, really like the idea of re-imagining Catwoman as an older woman and not a, *WARNING: INCOMING PUN* sex-kitten. It's just the right kind of twist that fits in to the Nolanverse without betraying the character. Lose the skin-tight catsuit (pointy ears and all) and just have her be an older woman (I really don't want to use the term "cougar" here, but you get the idea).

As for Cher, I'm not a huge fan by any stretch, or really a fan at all. But she has won awards and proven she has acting chops (though those last two points are obviously mutually exclusive). As for her age being an issue, how many kung-fu intensive scenes did Heath Ledger have in TDK? Not much. Lots of guns. Lots of explosions. No need for really intense physical action. I like the idea of Anjelica Houston as well. I don't really care who, but I think Jolie/Garner ('member Elekta?)/McAdams is a tread that's well-worn. I am very, very intrigued with a Catwoman who's hyper-sexuality has been turned down to a more ... realistic level.

I haven't seen many burglars/murders wearing pleather lately.
  • jj gonzo
    JESSICA BIEL as CATWOMAN!!!!!
  • dookie
who the fuck wants to see cher in a batman movie.
  • jacob
I think that Cher would play an excellent catwoman as she is a great actress with a looks and attitude to be an evil catwoman diva, but unfortunately i don't think she will be cast, the US has a hard and fast addiction to 20 something females.
  • gocitizen
Cat lady. That is funny :)

If they were to go with a Cat Woman, and in an older direction, look no further than Monica Bellucci, Carla Gugino, or Diane Lane.

Otherwise, Kate Beckinsale for the easy slam dunk.
  • Joe Newman
Cher would be better than Jolie
  • 790
    Gotta be a joke.
  • Cole
This rumor is total BS, although the thought of Cher serinading Bruce Wayne by singing "Believe" to him does sound very interesting :)....Please keep catwoman out of the "Nolanverse," but if catwoman must be in it, then she should be either Rachel McAdams or Emily Blunt.
  • Jakobi
I'm always down for something that goes away from the direction most people think things should. If Cher were to be in it, and Nolan really did think about it, there must be a reason, right? As a new director myself, I believe everyone has a talent, skill and insight into a role or production, that now everyone sees at first, and that combined with some truth behind their actions could make most people compelling to watch regardless of age or whatever.

Anyways, Cher in the sequel, would be weird, but just strange enough to make me want to watch, and I'm sure a lot of other people. Though I will admit, her voice may get to me after a while. I wonder if her Catwoman voice would change like Batman's does?
  • 790
    Cher's like 72 years old.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :-(
  • You're right on Ledger and Nolan suffering fan backlash with the initial announcement; But this? Even if the story was real, I can't imagine a more unholy terror than Batman fans when they find out Cher's playing the star of their wet dreams.

For God's sake, the character is nearly as old as most of our Grandmothers, someone, anyone, please get it right if you're going to have Catwoman at all.
  • adp
I really, really, really don't see Nolan bringing Catwoman into the film. The character just doesn't seem like she'd fit in with the mythos and style of the universe Nolan's created.

I won't believe a word about the casting or possible storyline of a third film until it comes from Nolan's mouth.
  • @adp, and anyone else saying Catwoman doesn't fit the movie. Check out The Long Halloween by Tim Sale and Jeff Loeb. Many elements from this Batman book (like with Batman: Year One before it) was used for the film. TLH features Catwoman pretty prominently, and all of the elements between the first two films are in place for her to (logically) appear in the next film.
  • lovestothink
I agree with many statements made on this thread, and all actors/actresses mentioned could be either good or bad, none could be defined without some sort of production underway.

However, why is it that very few among you have any idea how to spell, use proper grammar (i.e.-"then" vs. "than") or properly use punctuation? You should all (well, not all) be ashamed for not allowing yourselves to project the voice of somebody who has at least a sixth grade education.

I would love to talk about Batman with people who know how to speak. Unfortunately...
  • meerling
    Cher ?!
    Ewww! That's just nasty!

Cat Woman is supposed to be gorgeous.
Even if it's an old Cat Woman, she won't be festering nasty like Cher.
Back a century ago when Cher was young, she was ugly.

Ick! Disgusting... Freddy Kruger would look better in that part...
  • cellchild
i would pay a lot of money to see it :)
