Frost/Nixon Movie Trailer and Photos

Universal has released the official American trailer for Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon. We also have some production photos and an official plot synopsis below. Based on a play of the same name, the film tells the story of the series of infamous post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost (Michael Sheen) and former president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella). As always, tell me what you think in the comments below!

Official Plot Synopsis: Oscar®-winning director Ron Howard brings to the screen writer Peter Morgan’s (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland) electrifying battle between Richard Nixon, the disgraced president with a legacy to save, and David Frost, a jet-setting television personality with a name to make, in the untold story of the historic encounter that changed both: Frost/Nixon. Reprising their roles from Morgan’s stageplay are Frank Langella, who won a Tony for his portrayal of Nixon, and Michael Sheen, who fully inhabited the part of Frost onstage in London and New York.

For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans.

Likewise, Frost’s team harbored doubts about their boss’ ability to hold his own. But as cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted. Would Nixon evade questions of his role in one of the nation’s greatest disgraces? Or would Frost confound critics and bravely demand accountability from the man who’d built a career out of stonewalling? Over the course of their encounter, each man would reveal his own insecurities, ego and reserves of dignity—ultimately setting aside posturing in a stunning display of unvarnished truth.

Frost/Nixon not only re-creates the on-air interview, but the weeks of around-the-world, behind-the-scenes maneuvering between the two men and their camps as negotiations were struck, deals were made and secrets revealed…all leading to the moment when they would sit facing one another in the court of public opinion.

Frost/Nixon is a collaboration between Imagine Entertainment and Working Title Films, with Academy Award® winners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard joining Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner as producers. Joining Langella and Sheen as the colorful real-life personalities who provide the men counsel is a formidable roster of actors including Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Sam Rockwell, Toby Jones and Matthew Macfadyen.

I have to say that I saw the play in New York and I thought it was great. Peter Morgan has a unique ability to actually make historical drama interesting. Frank Langella, while not looking much like Nixon, had him down pat. There was a moment in the play that really moved me and I completely forgot that it wasn't Nixon I was watching. Martin Sheen too, though I don't know much about David Frost, was excellent. He really knows how to work dialog and plays with every word. As far as the movies concerned I feel like Ron Howard is kind of hit or miss.

Wow. When I first heard about the film, I thought, "sounds kinda boring." Seeing that trailer, I want more! Looks like a great drama.

I saw it at a screening on campus and Ron Howard spoke with us afterward.

    The film was incredible.

Oscar aiming features are usually forgettable and un-entertaining....mostly dry acting put behind a dramatic score isn't the only way to get an Oscar people....make something I'm going to watch more than once, make films for the public not critics!
  • Christopher Marc
*Yawn....I hate these movies which are made just to get Oscar nominations...this reminds me of "Good Night, Good Luck"..A story I could careless and a film that should have been made around the time the event happened...

What's up with them taking part of Clint Mansell's excellent Fountain score and throwing it on something like this?
  • David
completely agree with you, saw the trailer AFTER the sub-par movie and thought it was outrageous! His music is profound and here it is anything but. I AGREE!!

Looks like a goddamn SNL skit. Horrible, just horrible.

this will probably be a best picture contender pending on reviews
  • The trailer is well cut and hints that this could be a definite Oscar contender. I saw the stage production in London in November 2006 and Michael Sheen gave one of the most brilliant performances I've ever seen in the theatre, so if they have captured any of that then I think this could be really special.

Good trailer. I believe the Clint Mansell temp music tally is up to about 9 or 10 trailers by now.

I'm surprised that Ron Howard found time to make this, he seemed so preoccupied with sucking Dan Browns cock.

The Nixon impression is godawful and distracting and the lead actor looks no better. Other than that, it looks like a fun little period drama/biography. Really what it reminds me of is that scene in Zodiac where the Zodiac was supposed to call into Brian Cox on that news show (you know) but stretched out to an entire movie and replace the Zodiac with Nixon.
  • This movie looks INCREDIBLE. I, personally, have always been intrigued by Richard Nixon.

    And what a tag!!!!!

"I'm saying when the President does it, it's not illegal"!

Brilliant!!!! Like it's coming straight from the mouth of every president we've ever had.

Whether it's Bush and his unjustified, illegal war.

It's Thomas Jefferson and his abuse of slaves.

It's Bill Clinton and his double talk.

    Absolutely brilliant.

I can't wait for this to come out.

I saw Frost/Nixon on Broadway last year and it was amazing. Frank Langella sounds so much like Nixon, he go all of his mannerisms down and everything. Sheen is also really good, he's never disappointed me.
  • Michael Sheen will get the Oscar nomination he should have gotten for The Queen. I also think Langella and Bacon will get nods. I think Imagine will push either Sheen or Langella as the supporting to make sure they both get in.
  • Pete (original)
    looks interesting enough
  • Looks pretty good. I don't think it matters if the actor looks like Nixon. Remember Anthony Hopkins as Nixon in Oliver Stone's film? That was a little distracting.

I think the trailer looked pretty good and it definitely peeked my
interest. The performances look great even if Langella doesn't look
like Nixon by the end of the trailer it didn't bother me at all.

I think the film looks great, intriguing, whatever superlatives you want to apply really work.

But am I the only one who notices the really sudden change in tone mid way through the trailer?

It opens with a sort of "upbeat" vibe, seventies-style aesthetics and music, which carries over to "Baba O'Reilly," continuing said tone. Then, bam! Clint Mansell kicks in and it seems like it goes from interesting historical piece to all-out, life or death political thriller.

It's not bad, per se, as I thought it was a great choice, but it does sort of twist it up on you at the last minute.

Wow, powerful stuff. Michael Sheen will not disappoint!

Looks like it could be a good film but will have to wait to see how they go with the film, in as who's side are they on with it.

    Looks good either way

Why do most movies nowadays look overly-processed? I don't think I've seen film (besides There Will Be Blood) that looks like film for years.

Ronnie Howard knows how to make compelling character movies. The trailer is tantalizing enough.

I disagree, I think it's a good trailer for what looks like will be a cracking film. I'm guessing this will be on the shortlist for Best Picture this fall.

Langella may seem the obvious highlight, but from what the trailer shows - it looks like Sheen might steal the show from under him. I haven't seen much of Sheen (didn't watch The Queen, and the last I saw him in was Kingdom of Heaven) but this might be the kind of film (big enough, important enough topic et al) where he can get some of the spotlight and get some awards.

Jesus jimmy crack jehoshaphat. I have to say, I respectfully disagree. That looks, for a historical drama, mega ultra hyper pimp. Langanella, while looking nothing like it, has the voice and the mannerisms down and this just looks stellar. hell, i'd see it without knowing it was Howard, but seeing good old Clint H. up there just seals the deal. Count me in. Reads like freakin' Quiz Show on steroids.
