Mean Girls 2? Naked Gun 4? Road Trip 2? Grease 3?

I’m sure that the downfall of modern entertainment will someday be linked to the concept of direct-to-DVD movie sequels. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a shitty home video sequel of Wrong Turn, but when they start messing around with films that people actually care about (like Lost Boys or Wargames), that is when I begin to get angry. Imagine someday Warner Bros will be making a direct-to-dvd sequel of The Dark Knight. I can’t wait (sigh). Paramount  has announced that they are launching a new label that will focus on developing dvd movies based on successful properties from their library. The label is being called Paramount Famous. And by “Famous” they mean, “We are ripping off you, the unknowing stupid consumer, with a sub par low budget movie that just happens to have the same name as a famous movie you loved, followed by a number 2, 3, 4 or rather some witty subtitle”.

The first film in the line is Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling (yes, notice the witty subtitle), which just wrapped and is scheduled to hit DVD in 2009. I’m fine with a direct to DVD sequel / spin-off of Without a Paddle, because if you buy such a movie, you only deserve what you get. But THR’s story claims that Paramount Famous has already begun developing a half-dozen other projects based on such movies as Road Trip, Bad News Bears, Naked Gun, Mean Girls and Grease. Do we really need another Naked Gun sequel? And I’m pretty sure that Mean Girls said everything that needed to be said about the world of mean high school girls. And without a young hot Lindsay Lohan in the lead role, what’s the point exactly? I guess you could argue that Hayden Panettiere starred in one of the awful direct-to-dvd sequels for Bring It On.

But one of the more disappointing points is that a direct to dvd sequel degrades the property that it is raping. I never want to see a Grease sequel, but I know a lot of women who would. The release of Grease: Greasing To Win It will ruin any hope for another big screen film. But the sad fact is that these movies sell because people are stupid. According to The Hollywood Reporter, most of the American Pie and Bring It On DVD sequels have sold between 1 million - 2 million copies each, which is nearly as much money as 300 or Ratatouille made at the box office.

  • The originals don't stop existing if a dozen bad sequels are produced.

Plus, I like that War Games, Lost Boys, Road Trip, and Mean Girls are now apparently in the "untouchable" category. That's a twist.
  • Justin: But the sequels taint the original and sometimes will prevent a big screen sequel from ever happening. I never said Mean Girls or Road Trip were untouchable. I'm actually find with those. I'm more concerned with a Lost Boys or War Games. And I could see how Grease or Bad News Bears might be harmful for the future of those franchises.
  • Ha, I actually beat you at reporting this. However your post is probably more interesting than mine (maybe).

Interestingly, about dvd sequels ruining the chance for theatrical sequels, Butterfly Effect 3 will be theatrical while 2 was straight-to-dvd.

Peter, I've always considered this a serious journalistic blog, and I still do. Which is why I'm glad you made this point: "But the sad fact is that these movies sell because people are stupid."

It's the damn truth, and I'm glad you said it. I don't even view that sentence as opinion. It's fact.

"American Pie and Bring It On DVD sequels have sold between 1 million - 2 million copies each, which is nearly as much money as 300 or Ratatouille made at the box office." Opening weekend box office? 1-2 million DVDs would be $60 million at the very most (and that's really pushing it).

who does paramount think they are? walt disney pictures? walt disney pictures already screwed up their classics, don't do the same paramount
  • Eddie
Yes we do need another Naked Gun. As long as they get the original cast.
  • Jason: All six films combines have made "nearly $200 million" which is what 300 or Ratatouille made domestically.
  • Andrea
Ah, Grease 2. Catchy title, huh? Anyway, Didi Conn as Frenchy from the first movie was back, but the rest of the cast was new, with the addition of Michelle Pfieffer in the lead role. If I remember correctly, she was a badass. I completely forget the specifics of the plot, however, if that gives you an idea of the memorability of the film. But it was kind of Hayden-like in the casting of Pfieffer; she hadn't done much before.
  • who the hell are buying these direct to dvd movies?!?!?!?!?!

I haven't even rented Starship Troopers 2 or 3....and won't even go near them.
  • Peter, I understand what you're saying but truthfully, a bad sequel really only "taints" an original if you ALLOW it to (see: ROCKY V never happened).

And if fan interest/star power was strong enough for, say, another American Pie movie, they would definitely do it theatrically. The cost effectiveness of direct-to-DVDs actually can help future theatrical endeavors; a thought process like "if a brainless DVD sequel to Mean Girls, with four unknowns in the lead, turned a profit of (random figure) $100 million, imagine what we we could make with another Lohan installment!" isn't exactly unheard of, amongst production firms.

Where ever the most money can be had -- be it a certain genre (comic properties?) or concept (sequels?) or business model (direct-to-DVD?) -- that's where more and more movies will turn up. While I cannot think of one direct-to-DVD movie I have seen (much less enjoyed), there's no point in getting bothered by this trend that is only increasing in popularity.

You guys already do a good job of covering smaller movies that deserve/need publicity (The Wackness chief among them)... more of that and less free attention for "Grease 4: The Mean Streak", I think, can really start to offset this balance of "art vs. money" that is sadly getting more skewed than ever.

That being said, I think direct-to-DVD could actually be a great avenue for independent film in the future. We can't write off the entire industry-within-an-industry.
  • Umm....yes we do need another Naked Gun. At least it wasn't like the crap that we're fed nowadays (Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, etc.)
  • orange cinema
i'm ready for the backlash, but i gotta say it - mean girls is a solid movie. in the upper eschalon of that genre.
