Writing Team Announced For The Hobbit

Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have announced that writing has begun on The Hobbit and the announced Hobbit sequel. Jackson partner Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have also been revealed as part of the writing team. Both Walsh and Boyens were part of the creative team behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Originally Jackson and del Toro were to oversee a writing team in penning both films. Jackson and del Toro made time in their schedules to become more involved in the process. This is great news because Jackson, Walsh and Boyens have an intimate knowledge of the Tolkien’s Middle Earth that would probably take months upon months of hardcore research for a new creative team. del Toro described the process as “something beautiful” while phoning in for a recent Hellboy II question and answer session.

The current plan is to begin shooting both films simultaneously in late-2009, with hopes of releasing The Hobbit in 2011, followed up the next year with the sequel. It does seem like they are rushing this a bit, but with a good creative team on board to pen the adaptations, I have a good feeling it will work out in the end. I’m still a bit hesitant about what exactly The Hobbit sequel will contain, and if it will be possible to create a narrative of the years in-between.

There is no doubt that the way that these films are going with there production that they are making sure on every detail.

I dont see the point to a sequel to The Hobbit, unless there is a brillant story or they want to make more money.

Christopher you silly man, it's all about the money!

i thought this was the writing team all along, so this is great news. i'm not a tolkien die hard like some, but i really am looking forward to seeing those actors share the screen again. especially if this part 2 film can somehow get the fellowship back together.

Really exciting news, if the same creative team is on board, that's awesome. I'd really like to see what aspects of Del Toro's style will be put into the film.

The movie between the Hobbit & LOTR should explore the Clone Wars more.
  • The LOTR dream team...

This is great news... I just really hope they don't go Lucas on us.

These are my favorite films. I remember going to see "Fellowship" when I was 12 years old. It blew me away like no other movie I'd ever seen, it really inspired me. To this day LOTR is closest to my heart when it comes to film. It did what Star Wars did to so many people...
I just hope Del Toro (along with Jackson and team) can succesfully recreate the magic for a new generation and not go down the same sad path that Star Wars did.

By the Way... As far as I know, the sequel will deal with the backstory of Aragorn, Arwen, and Legolas.
  • I have no hope for this film. Maybe visually, but in terms of story.. I'm cringing just thinking of what they'll do or change or add in, or what characters will get story time for no real reason. Does every great story need to be butchered into movie format?

Its one thing to cut things out of a story I understand that, but something like... shoe horning Arwen into a movie, that is what makes me loose all hope in someone.

And I can just foresee more "Oh I never read the book it was boring" conversations with idiots...

Oh goody, they can massacre the story for the Hobbit too! At least it will be consistent. Why do writers insist on changing the story when it was written so well. It's better to just leave out a piece of back story if it doesn't flow with the script than it is to just change it totally. ie Arwen and Aragorn
