Veronica Mars Movie Still Being Discussed

When Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas met with Kristen Bell last week, they talked about the possibility of doing a Veronica Mars movie. It’s not a go, but Thomas told EW that he’s had “a few conversations” with Mars executive producer Joel Silver. Thomas says that he’s too busy right now, “But as soon as I have any free time, that’s my top priority.”

I loved the show as much as the next guy, and while I have a desire to see the cast reunite for another tale, it makes me wonder if it is really worth it. Wasn’t the appeal of Veronica Mars that she was solving cases in High School (later in College) sometimes behind her father’s back? With Bell now “all grown up”, what would the story and setting evolve into? Before the show was canceled, there was talk of setting a new season set in the FBI academy. That’s fine for a television show, but they’ll need a bigger and better plan for a feature film. And the other question is: Could the feature film be viable on the big screen or could it only be profitable as a direct-to-DVD effort?

a big part of the show's appeal are the characters themselves, how they interact with each other, and how they spiel one sharp quip after another. i, for one, wouldn't mind seeing more of that.

    and besides, season 3 rocked!
  • I, too, am cautious about the idea of a VM movie, though I loved the show to itty bitty tiny pieces.

I think I would actually prefer that he go the Whedon route and do a continuation in comic book form. I just think a movie would be too likely to be terrible and they wouldn't be able to safely tie up everything in the two format of a movie.

did you check how old KB was when they were doing VM? not quite high-school ;)

This will never happen. The show was an utter failure and not a single person in the world is clamoring for a movie. Why not make a Charmed movie or a Monk movie? Exactly.

if they do a movie it should be dark as hell like how they were going to do it in the first place.

to do that keith mars has to die.
  • I'm a huge fan of Veronica Mars (even though season 3 kind of sucked). But I have to agree that I don't think this is a very good idea. I mean, where could it possibly go? If you make Veronica grow up and join the FBI, then she would leave the rest of the cast behind and it wouldn't really be Veronica Mars anymore. I love Veronica, but please Mr. Thomas don't ruin it by making a movie that is nothing like the TV show. (I'm looking at you Mission:Impossible.)

  • I pray this happens. Veronica Mars is my all-time favorite show.

I'd prefer a fourth season, or a half season special run of episodes to a movie. but hell, any new VM would be awesome. that show was suprisingly fantastic.

I think you could put the veronica character anywhere and it would be interesting. Although who wants a 2 hour veronica mars its like eating 1 fry. One of my favorite things were the whole season arcs. That shit is gold for a dvd marathoning.

I think Bell is trying her best to get away from that character...hopefully "Fanboys" gets released and she steps out of television hell. The only TV movie that should be made is "Arrested Development". Myself and others could careless about a Sopranos movie because David Chase was most likely out of ideas, hence the "fade to black" ending.

    Veronica Rocks!

Give me a Gilmore Girls tv movie, that will make my day.

    Boom goes the dynamite.
    Great news.

    Here's an idea:

VM is busted out of the FBI for the sort of shenanigans she got away with as a teenager. She had a short career, much potential, but she dropped like a meteor. Post FBI, she takes up True Crime writing, digging deep into cases and publishing what she finds. She has a baby with a douchebag who walks out on her suddenly, and with no explanation.

So she heads back to Neptune so dad can help out with Jr., while she pokes around some of her old stomping grounds for book ideas.

That's your act one. Perhaps Keith Mars is brutally murdered as plot point #1, but I've always enjoyed the interaction betwwn KB and Enrico Colantoni. Maybe Wallace Fennell washes up dead on a beach somewhere, followed by Duncan Kaine, and it becomes obvious that someone is taking out everyone Veronica loves.

If they make the film it should only cover tying up the loose ends. Season 3 sort of ended without resolution. Tie that shit off, don't have her go off to some new job and new story arc.
As far as age, the entire time she was playing Veronica as a "high school student" she was in her twenties. I don't think it'd be absurd to just finish off where they left it.

I'm fine with a VM movie - TV Movie - not theaterical release I don't think it would make enough money to justify the costs. So, make a TV movie and then put it on DVD so fans can add it to their collection.

Max has got a good idea. TV is more prone to experimental seasons lately. Why not an early spring or late summer run of 6 episodes? Promote it well enough and every VM fan will come out of the woodwork to tune in. I would prefer to see VM return to Neptune though, not the "New Adventures of Veronica Mars: FBI"
