Russell Crowe in Bill Hicks Biopic?

Russell Crowe revealed to the Sydney Morning Herald, that he might be playing Bill Hicks in an upcoming biopic, which is progressing from “treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer by Mark Staufer.”

Hicks was a successful stand-up/rant comedian in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, once voted “Hot Standup Comic by Rolling Stone Magazine, and listed at #19 on Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time. Hicks battled drug and alcohol abuse before dying from pancreatic cancer at 32-years-old. Talk of a biopic began in 2004 at Paramount Pictures, but the project never got off the ground. For those who haven’t experienced Hicks’ comedy, check out his NSFW bit on marketing after the jump.

Bill Hicks was the most Brilliant Fucking Comic. Ever.
  • johnson
no no no no no no no no no no. screw russell crowe.
  • Sean
    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo times a million.
  • Hunter Stephenson
really dumb casting. this is like casting jared leto as kurt cobain.
  • Captain Awesome
Like casting Brian Austin Green as The Riddler.

    Basically, what Hunter said.
  • Shad
the only guy that could play bill hicks...I'm thinking...Kevin Spacey would be perfect.
  • Captain Awesome
    Shad,

    That's a really good pick.
  • Captain Awesome
In before some asslicker says, "Johnny Depp would be a 'great' Bill Hicks!, NYUK! NYUK!"
  • gocitizen
Hicks was funny, but I sure don't want to see a movie about his life. I'm bored just reading about it. That's a bargain bin DVD regardless of who plays the man.
  • jerryseinfeld
i think Denis Leary should play him - he stole his act, so he'd be most qualified to re-tell hicks' jokes.
  • Captain Awesome
    gocitizen,

He had a very interesting life. Especially his upbringing. it would make for a great film if they do it right and stick to what's been written about him.

American Scream touches on some of it.
  • YouKnow
I don't know what you guys are talking about... I love Russell Crowe

    ;)
  • Captain Awesome
    @ jerryseinfeld

    lol, fucking touche'

    @ YouKnow

I like Crowe. Just not for this role. (That rhymed, yo!)
  • Brody
I think crowe would be a great fuckin pick you idiots. Spacey was great in his last bio pic...........................right, fuck off. Crowe even looks like him.
  • M&Co
I hate biopics - but I vote David Duchovny to play the big man.
  • Goobity
@ Brody: Crowe is a poor choice for most of the roles he's chosen. The point is that ANYBODY attempting to play Hicks is wasting their time. He'd be the first to say it, were he alive. in fact, he'd tell them all to go fuck themselves. An attempt at making money off a legacy that spat in the face of the travesty that is mass media is an affront to Hick's entire message. This film should be dead before it starts rolling. Long live Bill Hicks.
  • I actually think this is a good casting decision. Hicks deserves a good big-screen treatment. He's easily one of the top 5 comics ever, especially because he was two things at once: hilarious and right on the money (especially his plan for saving the world).
  • Bill would sh*t in Crowe's mouth.. already uninterested.. would rather read a book about him instead. That's like having Jack Black play Hunter S Thompson. Bill deserves more respect than that, in fact I think making a movie about him in the first place is 100% hypocritical of his views. bleh
  • gocitizen
maybe he did lead an interesting life, but I'd rather just remember the "funny" where comedians are concerned.
  • Brody
Crowes been a was poorly casted in every movie he's been in, LOL, okay totally poor as James Braddock, even worse in Gladiator. I guess that why all of us are here typing and he is collecting academy awards. LOL. Sometimes this site is offending to the point that real actors and movie buffs are ashamed to come here because of all the fuckin fat fanboy dorks that read this page.
  • Brody
All you have to do is look check out Captain Awsome and his incredible contributions to this site.......... 90 times a day.............. to find out no ones opinion here really matter. Maybe a few but its easy to tell who actually thinks before they type.
  • Jimmy
Kevin Spacey would be good, as would John Cusack.
  • th1nk
I've read none of the comments. But, I have an idea. Instead of a bio-pic, how about we buy his DVDs instead. That sounds solid to me.
  • erik
I'm not sure how good of an actor he is, but I think Steve Byrne kind of looks the part. Plus he's a comic so I'm sure he would understand the character a bit more.
  • freemachine
Why are you guys listing possible actors who are well in their late forties (to play a guy who died in his early 30s)?
  • Watch this and tell me Jeremy Piven wouldn't be perfect.

  • Mr. B
    To quote the man himself:
    "Will there be Titties?"

Weirdest coincidence was that I was listening to Rant in E-Minor not 20 minutes ago.

All I can say is that any potential player should be forced to perform the "dark poetry" concerning Rush Limpballs.
  • Raerth
Know I'm baiting by saying this..

Heath Ledger would have nailed it.
  • marlow
Hicks was born in 61, Crowe in 64 he seems a little old to be playing Hicks in his 20's and early 30's.
  • Dan Palmer
Yeah exactly. Hicks DIED in his early 30s so how the hell could Crowe seriously pull this off.

My pick would be a fattened up JOSEPH GORDON LEAVITT.

Take a look at this pic and tell me you can't see it..

  • evanz
    Steve Zahn.
  • The irony of making a big screen movie about Bill Hicks is just too much. I don't care who they cast, I won't see it. And Russell Crowe is a tool.
  • Frank Saltzman
I think I make a Bill Hicks reference every day in conversation. Russell would make a good enough Bill Hicks, and would give Bill the recognition he never got in the states. A true comedy genius. Maybe the theaters will serve "orange drink" to everyone who buys a ticket.
  • paul giamatti would be perfect in my book but it makes sense with Crowe...

as a comedian and as someone who studies his work, I woudnt be offended if this movie was to be filmed at all. If his beliefs are properly displayed and theres titties i think he would be cool with it.

"Whats your favorite New Kid?, THE FIRST ONE THAT DIES!!!"
    - Bill Hicks
  • Russel Crowe is a disastrous choice.

Imagine what Philip Seymour Hoffman could do with this role. He'd be an amazing Bill Hicks.
  • Christine
Brody: you are so right. People who have crap to say about Russell Crowe don't know shit about movies/acting...and you are right again...he's the one making millions plus his Academy Award....and if he was the kiss ass type [which he isn't] he would have several more Oscars.
He would be great as Bill Hicks. AND...he does look like him. Although I must admit he also looks like Spacey who I also think would do a great job.
I don't know what it is about some of you guys who who berate Crowe. Do you feel threatened by him or what? He's obviously his own man...isn't pushed around by anyone...and is known to be very generous with his friends and even those he doesn't know.
I guess maybe it's just jealousy cus I can't think of any other logical answer. He's one of the greatest actors around.
  • Christine
John Cusack???? what's he ever done?
  • Ryanschild
    *lights a smoke*

    *chuckles*

    *dies a little*
  • Steve Brooks
They need someone who understands the message to play him, that's not Denis Leary and that's not Russel Crowe.
it scares me that they even considered them.
    it scares me alot.
  • whosit
no. a film about bill hicks is a very bad idea. end of.
  • ridlos
just anyone who is as obscure, talented and passionate as Bill was about comedy and social issues. which rules out crowe and most of the others mentioned.
  • mescalito
yeah or like heath ledger as the joker...
oh wait, we all think that was awesome now.
  • Dane
    John Cusack.

Btw, Russel would and could make a good Hicks, you guys don't know anything about him. Him and Kevin Booth know each other, and I know for a fact that Russel has never ever been apart of the bullshit of modern sellout standards. He plays in a band too, here in Australia.

I think he'll do just fine.
  • Matt
Kevin Spacey I said that the first time I saw Hicks' videos. Watch the Usual Suspects and tell me Spacey isn't the best man for the job. If you're considering Crowe than Spacey isn't too old. KEVIN SPACEY
  • Matt
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKKDKAKNH-k
See I told you he could pull it off!!!
  • god
Hollywood will destroy his legacy! For fucks sake, it's probably more about the money, than spreadung the word .. plus if the movie will suck (cause it's a hit or miss) then people will have the wrong impression about him.. an fuck Russell Crow btw
