Valkyrie on December 26th 2008

When Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie was moved back to 2009, everyone interpreted the move to mean the film was not good enough for Academy Award consideration. Well MGM has announced that they are moving the Tom Cruise Hitler Assassination thriller up to December 26th, a prime date at the close of Awards season. But the studio claims they made the move not because of award consideration, but instead because they believe the film will play better to audiences in the holiday release, instead of in mid February.

I find it a bit strange that the film is being released on the 26th, when a boat load of films are being released one day earlier for Christmas. That line-up includes Frank Miller’s The Spirit, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Bedtime Stories, Marley & Me, and the limited release of Gran Torino. Also, David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button hits theaters one week earlier. Seems like a crowded week to release the film, and if MGM isn’t doing it for award consideration, then why did they make the move at all?

  • Yes that is a bit strange launching on the 26th Dec. That's all I need after celebrating the birth of Jesus, a good old film about the Assassination of Hilter. You can't beat a bit of good old Nazi action around Christmas ;)
  • I never quite understood the whole movies during christmas thing either... i guess releasing a movie about the attempted assasination of the man that slaughtered millions of jews in europe is fitting for the day after we celebrate the birthday of the most famous jew, who the jew didn't believe to be the son of god.
  • One of my good friends is Jewish, I am not, but he informed me that a very popular Jewish thing to do on Christmas is go see a movie. I'd prefer to sit at home and unwrap presents from Baby Jesus.

Either way, it seems ridiculous for them to release that movie a day AFTER as I would think someone of Jewish heritage may be interested in seeing a movie about people trying to kill a monster of their past. Call me crazy.

holy /drama queens! i've heard great things about this film, and the move doesn't seem like that big a deal at all.
  • Perhaps they want an excuse when it tanks, and think that most people will forget the poor scheduling? Perhaps Cruise wants it out of the way in 08 so his next project won't be quite as tarnished?

Or, perhaps it's friggin' awesome, and this time they actually DO kill Hitler, and the last 60 years is changed forever as though Homer traveled back in time and squished a fish.

I guess it's time to ragnarok and roll.

seriously i have no hopes for this one!

is Tom Cruise still trying to get an oscar???
  • Clerks-Girl
Because nothing says " Happy Holidays!" Like a good ole Hitler asassination flick. Clearly this movie will be great post holiday spirit
  • Max
probably trying to bury the film without making it seem like they are trying to do it.

I just watched the trailer, and although the story looks compelling, we ultimately know they didn't assassinate Hitler. Also, it's got a bunch of British guys and Tom Cruise playing Nazis in their native accents. Could you imagine Schindler's List with all the actors using British and American accents?

I think this movie will bomb.
  • lots of people dont celebrate Christmas including me. I plan to go see lots of new movies during the holidays.

You know, knock Tom Cruise all you want. He's not a spectacular actor by any stretch of the imagination, especially now that when I see him I picture his couch jumping and inane argument with Matt Lauer and it ruins the movie for me.

So the guy is a subpar actor at best (at least these days). But he's made some excellent career decisions (movie wise, not basically tanking himself with his personal insanity). I don't think Tom Cruise is a particularly good actor by any stretch of the imagination, but he surrounds himself with talent. He's acted alongside Paul Newman under the direction of Scorsese, alongside Hoffman in Rain Man, with Nicholson (among other more talented actors) in A Few Good Men-a Reiner film, Magnolia with PTA, Eyes Wide Shut-Christ on a Cracker a Kubrick film, he was even great in Michael Mann's Collateral, again with the superior Jamie Foxx. He used to actually make good choices and work with talent. He's a pretty boy, but he's got quite a resume. Of the pretty boy actors (and this is a side note), by which I mean Pitt, Hartnett, etc., my favorite is probably DiCaprio. I hope he doesn't go crazy too.

I don't feel bad for him, though, if Valkyrie kills his career. Not like he needs the money. But I am excited to see this Tropic Thunder performance people are raving about. That might save him. I think the haters need to see that he doesn't take himself THAT seriously and is actually capable of making fun of himself. Xenu willing, his career will rebound, and he won't make movies outside his range (::cough:: Valkyrie). He's good, as far as actors go, but I think playing a Nazi, especially when he can't even pull of learning German or even picking up an accent, is out of his league.

At least there is one german actor in it. =D

I believe this has to do with the shake up at UA that was reported yesterday. Cruise's producing partner and chairman of UA Paula Wagner, was stepping down since no other movies since "Lambs for Loins," have been put out in theaters. And in order to keep there funding with Meril Lynch they need to release movies out at a certain time. So instead of releasing one movie this year they will have two movies out.

Let's hope this movie is another epic fail for tom cruise so the man simply disappears. Nobody can take him seriously anymore-fucking whackjob. He used to be such a cool dude, an actor I respected. Yet like someone said, all I see is a couch-jumping douchebag who worships aliens. Tragic. I wonder if Katie will be let out of the dungeon today?
  • Gajonka
Good point at the end there. you are smart, man. it will probabaly be a shit show and be awful...

It's funny to read people saying how "strange" something is (a movie being released on a certain date) when they really don't know if it's strange or not. Many movies do very well during or after Christmas and if you look at the possible demographic for this kind of film, which is obviously driven by the main star, then while it doesn't mean automatic success by any means, it certainly does make some sense to release this on the holiday frame rather than February.
  • Adam
I'm just happy it's coming out. This is one I've followed, and agonized over all the delays.

I wonder if the move back to this year might be a play to capitalize on all the Tropic Thunder goodwill his performance generated?
  • Interesting news for Americans.
The film looks good, the premise is interesting and the supporting cast rocks.
  • ...According to The Omniverse Almanac, Johnny Depp is actually one of the few very cool people inhabiting this planet, along with Steven Splielberg, Riccardo Mariti, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake, Angelina Jolie, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Bill Gates, Stephen Hawkings, Laurence Dale, the Dalai Lama...
  • I'm Jewish too. Ever wonder why the only restaurants open on Christmas are Chinese restaurants? Cause we eat Chinese food and go to movies on Christmas day.

I don't think it matters when they release this movie. It looks painfully dreadful.
