Kick-Ass Casting Begins

Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin from Superbad) is in negotiations and Chloe Moretz (Dirty Sexy Money) has been cast in Mathew Vaughn’s big screen adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic book Kick-Ass.

Based on the creator-owned comic from Marvel’s Icon imprint, the story follows a a 15-year-old boy named Dave Lizewski who attempts to become a real-life superhero. The catch is that he has no powers or any of the stereotypical reasons for choosing to fight crime. The screenplay was written by the Stardust team of Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. The violent nature of the source material and obvious issues with the useage of the title in marketing has caused Hollywood studios to pass on the project. Some studios showed interest but wanted Vaughn to either tone down the violence or raise the age of the lead character. Vaughn believed in the project so much that he raised $30 million from private investors to produce the project independently.

Mintz-Plasse is not in line for the lead role, but instead that of the Red Mist, an angry teenage son of a mobster who is out to uncover Kick-Ass’ true identity. Moretz’s character is described by THR as “a ferocious, potty-mouthed 11-year-old who chops down crime thugs with a ninja sword.” Vaughn is also talking to “several high-profile stars” to play the parents or mobsters. The main character, Dave Lizewski, has not yet been cast. Vaughn hopes to begin production in the fall.

Mark Millar is also the creator of Wanted, and writer on many successful Marvel comics titles such as Spiderman, Wolverine, X-Men, Civil War, The Ultimates, Marvel Knights Spider-Man, Ultimate Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four.

The official plot synopsis of the film, that was being shopped around, follows:

Dave Lizewski is a kid growing up in a rundown suburb of America, he isn’t a gamer, he isn’t a jock, he isn’t a mathlete, he’s just a regular kid. When he is not hanging out at the local comic store with his friends Todd and Marty, he is fantasising about his school teacher and Katie Deauxma, the class hottie.

The only thing that is unusual about Dave is that about a year ago his Mother died.

But somehow through this blend of normality, teenage angst and irritation at being continually mugged, Dave makes the decision to become a superhero’ KICK ASS!

Dave’s first foray into being a Superhero results in him being stabbed and run over. As he recovers in hospital he decides to hang up his cape.

Meanwhile across town Frank D’Amico’s henchmen are trying to find out who knocked off their coke. A gibbering courier claims it was a superhero.

When Dave recovers he realises he can’t walk away from being a hero, and when he successfully steps in on a mugging he brings himself to the attention of the US media and Frank D’Amico could this be the guy who knicked his coke?

Dave soon finds himself coming to the aid of Katie Deauxma, but when he gets to her ex-boyfriends apartment he meets Hit Girl, a four foot killing machine, and her father Big Daddy.

As Dave gets sucked into the dark world of vigilante crime fighting he gains a duplicitous sidekick ‘Red Mist’.

An increasingly unhinged Frank D’Amico closes in on Dave, and when he is double crossed by Red Mist, Big Daddy ends up dead and Dave has to make the decision, will he stand by Hit Girl in the final fight against Frank or will he return to his normal life?

Mark Millar is such a hack writer. This comic sucks. The concept is sound, but the execution is piss poor. I don't know how any self respecting director would jump into a comic project having only read two issues. "Lick-ass" is more like it.
  • Captain Awesome
    haha, what stupid name.

The synopsis sounds like something used for a porno version of a comicbook.
  • Lucas
I hope Vaughn doesnt f* with the story like Derek Haas and Michael Brandt did on Wanted!!!

But seeing as there is only 3 issues out, unless Millar has finished it already, I can only imagine its going to be another Wanted.

I love how Millar gets movies made before he's even done, while Alan Moore's material had to wait 20 years.

I hope I get to see a proper Wanted in my lifetime...and on a side-note Preacher...the next most deserving comic-to-be-a-movie.

    Lucas,

HBO was in talks to make Preacher into a series. At the time they had the douche responsible for directing that comical Ghost Rider film. But as of now I have no idea what's going on with the project.

Preacher would be cut short in a two hour film format. It's a lot more character involved and progressive. So I think a proper HBO series would be great if its done, written, and directed well.

like lucas said, we're only on issue #3. i hope that film synopsis isn't what millar has planned for the series, otherwise that is one of the largest spoilers i've ever read.

50- to 60% of that synopsis is brand new plot points - then again, halfway through the wanted movie they (unfortunately) decided to take a complete left turn from the source material, so why should this be any different. wanted could have been truly unique if they had just stuck with the book - instead we were left with a typical shoot em up. it'd be a shame if vaugn & millar are in such a rush to film this that millar shirks the responsibility of finishing this mini-series - in fact we are waaaaaaay overdue for volume 4.

millar is far from a hack, but i do prefer his original stories over his takes on big name characters. old man logan could have been a wonderfuly LONG story, but each issue so far is 10 pages of story filled with 80 pages of advertisements. its like a premature ejaculation, quick build-up quick finish. i wish he'd stretch the story out more.

i mean, i know he'll finish the series, it just would;ve been nice to read & digest the book before i found out mclovin is playin a character that hasn't even been introduced yet.
  • AntiHero
Doesn't that plot synopsis completely spoil issue #4 which isn't even out yet? I'm a huge fan, I'm interested how they treat the whole Hit Girl introduction.

Captain said, "Preacher would be cut short in a two hour film format. It’s a lot more character involved and progressive. So I think a proper HBO series would be great if its done, written, and directed well."

    Absolutely right.

And how about this from the article, "Vaughn believed in the project so much that he raised $30 million from private investors to produce the project independently."

Regardless of whether this will be any good, I respect the hell out of that move, and I think it's the future of cinema for projects like this. The most recent example of why more producrs/writers/directors should be doing this is the current Punisher fiasco.

    @ antihero

it completely ruins issue #4 and pretty much the whole series. but we've both posted this fact and noone seems to give a shit.

mark my words though, if this were a comic series that certain other people liked, we would never hear the end of a major 'ruining spoiler' like this.
  • J- Airy _ ButL_Er
this'll never fly in hollywood if they're like 11 and 15 in the movie.
  • CHICKImonkey
I am 16 and i would love to play the lead role. I can easily pull off a dweeb. but of course that will never happen. (sigh)
  • Presto117
    lol, i love this series!!!!!

    so great.

but good thing i didn't read the whole synopsis.

Let's read your comic book. I wonder if it's any good. I bet it isn't. Why don't you stop hiding behind your computer and stop bitching about things you have no hand in anyway. If you don't like it, that's fine. But until you start writing better than Mr. Millar, I wouldn't call him a "hack".

Read RED SON and OLD MAN LOGAN and then get back to me.

    @ Lucas

You'll never see the Wanted on screen that you want to. It's just not going to happen. And the sequel is going to be worse than the first. That's just the way it is.

After reading the plot synopsis, I think they're actually going to stick to the books on this one. Which is good. FANS of the book I think will really enjoy this. If you're not a fan of the book, than just look away. It's obviously not news for you. I'm a big Millar fan, and even after being disappointed with Wanted, I'm still excited for this movie.

I'll let you know when the comic comes out man. It's not whether people like it or if it's successful. It only matters if there's truth behind it. I've been writing for a long time and have my own interests and sensibilities. I can tell you first off though, that these sensibilities don't revolve around pop culture references, the borrowing of celebrity image, and shock value. I don't write for the soul purpose of getting a movie deal, which seems to be Millar's agenda these days.

Ultimates, Wanted, and Red Son are merely, truthless attempts at being edgy and hip. Millar is a shallow, low brow writer, who has no respect for his audience. He's just in it for the buck.

There are some good comics out there man. You should check them out sometime.
  • The Effin Wolfgangg
    @ Tendrillar

You obviously have no idea at the attempt behind the Ultimates. I'll give you Wanted [although I liked it, I do semi agree with what you are saying]. And you obviously never read Red Son.

As for your whole "truth less" bullshit, writing isn't always about fact. Writing is also about making an observance about society and the world around us through fictional characters to create an alternative point of view to people who might for some reason or another be blind to said perception. Millar does this several times over in some of his books. Wanted and Red Son are these alternative points of view inside already fictionalized worlds. To create social commentary inside a world created by somebody else is no easy task, as any writer will tell you.

And sometimes, writing is for entertainment value.

Do me a favor though. Before you publish any of your books, make sure and go back to grammar school. Little mistakes like using soul instead of sole will make your editor rip up your script before even finishing it.

hey, they just announced that they cast 'dave lizewski', millar says its an unfamous kid & they'll announce it soon. i think this is an excellent way to go.
