Minutes after the panel for Frank Miller’s green screen opus,The Spirit, was over at Comic Con, the Internet exploded like a million snarky bottle rockets, sending up enlightened texts like, “The Spirit, LOL, looks like Sin Shitty,” and the trusty “EPIC FAIL!” Yes, on that marvelous day, the vista view enjoyed from the confines of Twitter was like sipping a Corona inside the Green Zone. Well, the Con footage has now popped (pooped?) up on YouTube. I might as well let the Slashfilmbot take over from here. Samuel L. Jackson caps off this clip by declaring, “C’mon! Toilets are always funny.” Polite fanboy laughter only adds to the cringe factor, like a really bad SNL skit.

    Awkward.

I thought the footage was fake, that's actually going to be in the movie? Eek.
  • Sergemeister
    Poop. Pure poop. Thanks S.Jackson.
  • Johnichi
    Uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....
  • Canasian
Once I got into it, it actually came out better than I thought it would. But it may just be me holding out hope. This may be one of those movies that most people and critics I know hate, but that I like.

    *sigh*
  • The Jezzus
    What the fuck was that?
  • Christopher Edwards
I can't fit this description in 5 words so here it I go.

The technology is 5 years ahead if done right.

The acting is 20 years behind or B film acting at best.

I was looking forward to this until the footage has benn leaked and that I think Millar has tried to hard with the style.
  • jimbo stewart
Really awkward... Miller should stick to the funny books, me thinks.
  • Jon
    Please Miller, Stop.
  • Ohiofile
And this is the footage that they thought would Iron Man this film into our hearts. Can't wait to see what he did with bad actors like Johansson and Mendes. Okay, I'll say it: My City Screams at this footage
  • the amazing null
that was awful. flame me if you want everybody but the problem here is that frank miller is overrated. he always has been. rob rodriguez was the creative genius behind sin city's presentation. miller... aside from his rescuing of batman and daredevil in the comics is a lackluster author and poor artist. the amateurish rehash is pure proof. don't believe me? look at his comics that the script he did for robocop 2 was based on: a lot of promise followed by, well, this garbage.

    more proof: ROBOCOP 3.
  • Matt
I enjoyed that, I laughed. I didn't hear polite laughs either, but genuine ones even if they might have been laughing at how bad they felt it was.
  • Oh.

If I hadn't read all the bashing from reputable movie buffs before seeing this footage, I would have labeled this as a joke for sure. An elaborate if slightly lame joke by the Spirit fellas at Comic Con, to tease and annoy fans. Even know, I have to ask, are we 100% sure this is real footage? It still looks like it's fake.

I've seen two Spirit trailers before this and they actually looked pretty good, so I'm really having a hard time believing this is for real...

    Tell me it isn't :(
  • Jeff
DAmn, movie was removed already. I've said it from trailer one - this movie looks shitty. "Hey yeah, I saw that one already, it was called Sin City, and it looked a lot better too"

I wish Sam Jackson would get back to acting and stop being a characature of himself.
  • J.D.
SO this was Bernie Mac's last film then? That's so sad....
  • Mary
    Five words:

    Why does Jesus hate us?
  • jager
That was fast.... it's gone. :(
  • Sergemeister
You know something? Jeff is right. What the hell Samuel L. Jackson?!? Please, pretty, please stop ruining movies! I wish I could have enjoyed Star Wars more if it wasn't for him and Jar Jar Binks. I think the only time that I respected him as an actor was M.Night Shyalamalaman's Unbreakable and then maybe the Incredibles. But Incredibles was just his voice, does that count? I don't know. If you didn't cringe at his appearance at the end of Iron Man, then I feel for you. He seems to keep ruining movies with his "I've had it with these motherfu**ing snakes on this MotherFu**ing Plane!" way of "acting".
  • Samuel L. Jackson is way over used and over rated...

oh and the biggest problem with this footage?
The Spirit IS NOT Sin City.
99.9% of people have never even heard of The Spirit, let alone read any of it...
the marketing of this film is going to ruin eveyone's expectations - no matter what the final film offers then.

    SAM JACKSON STARS IN

    -Miller, Write Don't Direct!
  • Captain Awesome
Miller just needs to write like CM said.

Let guys like Rodriguez, Snyder, and Tarantino do what they do best. I still have no fucking idea how Miller managed to get complete power to do a whole film to direct.

I bet the douche who got the deal through is probably cutting his wrists now.
  • WALT!
    damn! I missed it ..........ugh!
  • That's camp? Heaven help us.
  • Adam
Unfortunately I caught this before they pulled it.

    My 5 words...

I'm going to have to agree with "What the fuck was that?"

or perhaps "Toilets are not always funny"
or maybe "Please, Sam Jackson, stop acting"
or possibly (to Frank Miller) "You are not a director."
  • Presto117
    @ Captain Awesome

in all fairness, Miller did co-direct Sin City with Robert Rodriguez.

i haven't seen this footage, but it's already leaving a bad taste in my mouth :(
  • YoungZe
Missed it. After reading some of the comments, i should be thankful.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Cap

I knew this project was disaster when I noticed the lacking promotional campaign from Lionsgate from the get go...most people know Miller was given directing credit on Sin City only in name...at best he was storyboarder and consultant...As much as I want Miller to kick ass that clip really is bad....that being said I think he should be working on his "own" projects...I personally would rather see a Hard Boiled movie before Sin City 2 or 300 sequel...
  • Palmer
I think I'll pass on this one.
  • Reason
Sam Jackson is not overrated, he's just suffering what's called Hollywood Overexposure because unfortunately America is only comfortable with a handful of black American actors, thus the overexposure.

Jackson is still a great actor and always will be, but I commend him for having fun with his poor movie choices (SoaP, Spirit).

I missed the trailer, too slow I suppose, but I could've told you this movie was gonna suck when they used a Sin City style teaser trailer that still sucked. Let Sin City be Sin City. Don't bastardize the style or the brand on some shitty Spirit movie.
  • This is going to be a crap-fest. Usually trailors show you all the best shit to make you WANT to watch the movie. Even crappy Michael Bay's films and even Uwe Bowle's (sp?) have trailors that look like they may be good.

I've never seen a movie trailor become a total atom bomb and ruin all cred of a movie, even the movie's target audience is hating on this.

    Awesome.
  • kristin
I wish he didn't touch The Spirit.
  • orange cinema
    shit sandwhich.

    Sin City with down syndrome

  • The stupidity in some of these posts is astounding. Will Eisner's The Spirit really has hardcore fanbois in 2008 ? Half the people reading comics today don't even know anything about the comic. In fact at this year's Comic Con in NYC, no one the entire weekend even went over to the Will Eisner stand because no one there even knew who Will Eisner was. Surprise !

This film will not be bad, the reason people will try to tear it apart and compare it to other films before it is because they have no reference or relation to the film or its character. The entire idea of making this film in 2008 was a bad move in general. People will not get it. It's almost as bad an idea as making the Watchmen film. If anyone actually read the comic would know that making a film about it was exactly the opposite motive the comic was preaching against.

This film will be a standard Film Noir film that existed well before the days of Sin City. Just because that movie is the only reference for people, doesn't mean that they never existed. I am upset that people will take this out on Frank Miller and his ideas of grandeur rather than their own stupidity.
  • kingdarius
The dumbest shit i've ever seen
  • guylikeme
Why so serious? Really, that´s absolutelly funny. Ok, TDK is badass, but c´mon, Spirit is not like Batman. The clip is very good. Keep going Miller. I prefer you directing Spirit than writing craps like 300.
  • Tobi
@Raides: You don't like the idea of a Watchmen film being made today? I personally believe a comic with so much depth could only be made into a movie of equal depth today. Any attempt to have made a Watchmen movie in the past would have tanked with past special effects and actors. I cringe at the thought of the Owlship and the character of Dr. Manhattan trying to be done properly back in the time that this comic was popular. Only today with the wealth of great actors and special effect technology we have at our disposal could we do justice to Watchmen...in my opinion.
  • Goobity
@ raides : "This film will not be bad, the reason people will try to tear it apart and compare it to other films before it is because they have no reference or relation to the film or its character."

Actually, this is precisely why this film appears to be shaping up so poorly. Miller may mean well (and he's a legendary comics creator) , but he has diluted this with his own 'vision' to the point that Eisner's style and electric story-sense is lost.
If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it.
  • Pyd
Thank the gods Will Eisner isn't alive to see his lovely creation brutally ass raped by an ignorant hack like Miller
  • Sean
I think everyone bitches too much
  • @ Goobity: yes that is just the other side of the obvious argument, which also makes it as much opinion as my statement.

@ Tobi: no one was arguing that. The depth is there, but to turn it into a film makes it a hypocrisy onto itself. If you missed the obvious symbolism and reason the book was even created in the first place, please check the wikipedia article on it to try and catch up.
  • Niko
Did anyone see the Lakeview Terrace preview with Sam Jackson? Now that looks like it will be the funniest comedy of the year. Of course it will be unintentional, but what the hell, right?
  • Polio
Im so excited to see this movie . Amazing ! The matrix , starwars and now the spirit . A new breed of retard directors as such the world has never seen .
