This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

The Good

SOUTH PARK (SEASON 11)
South Park has become almost run-of-the-mill in its episodic delivery of insanity these past few years, losing a little bit of that hilarious edge and non-stop creativity that made it once so very special. Even so, it remains above and beyond one of the best comedic shows on television, and there is always at least a couple great moments per episode. This includes everything from Randy incorrectly filling in the word “N_ggers” on national television to terrorists attacking our imagination in the epic three-part series Imaginationland.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Mini-commentaries from series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

THE WIRE (SEASON 5)
Hands down, The Wire is my all-time favorite television series in existence. It’s a show that operates on a level untouched by current cinema, telling an incredibly authentic ongoing story about crime in Baltimore where every plot element is essential and every episode of every season has been mapped out beforehand. Each season brings something completely new to the table, amounting to a series that’s constantly evolving. If you haven’t started watching yet, I deeply encourage you to do so, as all five seasons are now available on DVD. Season 5 contains 10 full hour-long episodes.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: 6 audio commentaries, a documentary that explores the role of the media, and a retrospective look at the first 4 seasons.

PRISON BREAK (SEASON 3)
I actually have not seen an episode of Prison Break in my life, so I’m not even sure if this show is popular anymore. If so and you watch it, can somebody please explain to me: how does a show about a guy breaking another guy out of prison continue its storyline beyond one season? I sure hope the answer doesn’t involve the characters constantly switching roles, hopping in and out of prison for as long as the ratings stay high. That seems like it would get old fast. Anyway, season 3 consists of 13 episodes instead of the originally planned 22 (due to the WGA strike).
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: 2 featurettes (’Orientation’, ‘Breakout Episode’), directors’ takes, behind-the-scenes with the cast, and a bonus episode from The Unit.

CJ7
Stephen Chow’s follow-up to the hilarious Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer has been getting more much more mixed feedback than either of those films did, but the response has still been more positive than negative. In the film, Stephen Chow plays a poor father who finds a bizarre new toy for his son. Geared toward children, the movie is said to be both charming and sweet, but a little too strange and awkwardly plotted for most kids to be able to handle.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A commentary, three making-of featurettes, a lesson on how to stand your own against the school bully, a how-to on making your own lollipop prop, a CJ7 Mission Control Game, and character profiles.

FELON
The instinctive reaction to seeing a DVD with Stephen Dorff’s name on it that hasn’t received a major theatrical release is usually one of terror, but Felon isn’t the straight-to-DVD trash that he normally stars in. The film follows a family man (Dorff) who kills an intruder and afterwards finds himself forced to live his life in the violent penal system, forced to contend with the mass murdering Val Kilmer. It currently holds a 7.9 out of 10 rating on IMDB (out of over 4,000 votes).
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A making-of featurette.

The Bad

SMART PEOPLE
This movie should’ve been titled Obnoxious Self-Absorbed Faux-Intellectual Assholes, but I suppose the marketing people thought that was a little too long. That title isn’t necessarily a negative though, as The Squid & the Whale could’ve been called that and it would continue to remain a much better film than this miserable, unpleasant and utterly dull look at people who just aren’t that interesting to look at. The only bright spot is the smile-inducing performance by Thomas Haden Church, who ironically plays the only central character in the film who isn’t intelligent (or to phrase that more appropriately, “book smart”).
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A commentary by the writer and director, deleted scenes, a Sundance featurette, interviews, and outtakes.

THE AMERICAN MALL
Pitched as a High School Musical for an older generation, MTV’s The American Mall has been revealed to be even more generic and hollow than the HSM series, and a blatant cash-in on its success. This should really come as no surprise though; when a DVD cover reads “From the executive producers of High School Musical,” you automatically know you’re in trouble.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Two commentary tracks, deleted scenes, extended performances, a gag reel, a featurette, and three music videos.

    Adam,

I fully agree with you about The Wire. And I also keep hearing good things about "Felon".

I guess I better check it out.
  • MUST GET THE WIRE TODAY!

Felon is pretty good, saw it about a week ago, defintely give it a go CA.
  • mike
"The film follows a family man (played by Val Kilmer) who kills an intruder and afterwards finds himself"

Nope. Dorf is the Felon, Kilmer is playing a mass murderer
  • seanovan
I enjoyed Felon, Kilmer and Dorff both gave good performances.

I need some more word of mouth on Prison break because it is between that and The Shield for the next series I get into, after I finish The Wire of course. :)
  • Oliver
    Felon was VERY good.
  • alex
"how does a show about a guy breaking another guy out of prison continue its storyline beyond one season?"

Wow, Adam I just want to say thank you for that comment. I have not seen the show either, but that is verbatim what I have been asking my friends who watch it. Although I doubt any of them will ever see this page, I feel a sense of vindication lol
  • Adam B.
I'm about to watch some more of "The Wire" right now. :]
and I'm with you guys, I've never seen Prison Break, yet I don't get it's appeal.
two of my friends watch it and swear it's great.
maybe someone on here will explain why it's worth watching.
  • Prison Break has a pretty bullshit story but I enjoy every episode for reasons I can't explain.
  • Devin
I unfortunately watched some of The American Mall with my sister and I understand why its on the bad list. The movie was a sort of older version of High School Musical, it wasn't so bubblegumy (sp?) but it was still bad. I feel bad for kids who think this is a good movie.
  • Bobcat
I kind of agree with Jappo, although I can give some reasons. I haven't seen any of the third season yet, but I will say that the first 2 are excellently done in my opinion. Sure the storyline is really far-fetched if you think about it for too long, but if you just let it be, you start to believe it could happen.

And yes, while the first season is mostly about guys trying to escape from prison, it goes far beyond that. There does have to be some story that follows if/when they do/don't execute their escape (I'm trying my best to avoid spoilers here, haha). Also, the overarching plot of the series is actually more on a government/big-business conspiracy, which is interesting.

And lastly, the episodes all have fantastic cliff hangers that are reminiscient of 24 in its best days... so that keeps one glued to the show, wondering what could possibly happen next.

Those of you who haven't checked it out really should! Good stuff!

I am curious about this Wire show myself, never heard of it till it was posted on here. Sounds quality.
  • Gerball
    Felon decent movie!!

But it is Dorff that plays the Family Man!!!
  • Sebulba
I'm gonna miss seeing Chef in South Park :'(
  • Retro
Yes, I agree with everything said about Prison Break so far, but for some reason it is addictive and enjoyable. Some thing don't make sense but for me its all right doesn't take away from the show. Plays like the early season of 24, the drama and tension. 1st season was great. 2nd season was only all right. Then the 3rd came back ulitmately ending great. So I recommend it.
  • Chump Force 1
Anyone notice that the quality of television seems to far surpass all the slop being released in theaters?

10-15 years ago it was the oppisite, but now TV programing is of such high caliber nowadays, its leaving the majority of movies in its wake.
  • The film follows a family man (played by Val Kilmer)...

The family man is played by Stephen Dorff. Val Kilmer is a badass inside the prison.

Worth watching. Something that could happen to everyone.

    Silla!
  • I am a big supporter of Prison Break. They are able to drag the show out because of the massive scandal behind the original person who was suppose to get broken out. Also, it stays suspenseful because of the manhunt aspects.

I would recommend you check it out, it is a great show.
  • Jordan
i watched american mall with my girlfriend yesterday. oh.my.god. what a piece of crap that was. it was pretty funny though to make fun of it. the songs and choreography were hilarious.
  • To mike, Gerball and Scyfox,

Thanks for the correction regarding Felon. I was looking up information about it and instinctively assumed Val Kilmer was the good guy and Stephen Dorff was the bad guy. Shame on me for not confirming that information.

Adam,,, I'm a huge fan of PB , here's my brief synopsis of how Prison Break starts off)))

    Some season 1,, spoilers ahead,,,,,,,,,

    (((Prison Break;))))
Its a fast paced show about 2 (Scofield) brothers, one is a con-man, broke and desperate, (Lincoln), the other (Michael) is a structural engineer who's a successfull genius.....
Link screws up, is sent to prison, then during the trial is sentenced to death for murdering the Presidents brother.....

    Meanwhile,,,
Convinced his brother is innocent, Mike spends months planning his escape.
Michael was involved in building the very prison his brother is in, and also has recently had a full upper torso tattoo completed, that's full of gothic images, (representing all the information he needs to escape.)
Michael robs a bank in the right part of town and ends up doing 10 years in (the same) state prison, where he intends to save his brother, and break out ,,,,,,

    Meanwhile ,,,,
Lincolns girlfriend Veronica, who's also Links Lawyer, uncovers new evidence reveling a cover up in the murder of the Presidents Brother.
This also exposes a deeper conspiracy, that goes all the way to the President, herself....

In Prison,, Michael meets up with his brother and begins to recruit the prisoners he has in mind that will ultimatly help in his escape.

In the free world ,,,,,(outside of Prison)
Veronica is now on the run with Lincolns son as they have to stay one step ahead of the (government agents) that want to keep the real evidence a secret and there willing to kill everyone to make that happen. (They also have all the power in the world to do it!!)

And that's the first 4 episodes of season 1.

If that dosnt make you want to see the show, then o well,,, its the second best action show behind 24 and believe it or not the chase and the conspiracies just get deeper and deeper,,,,,

    Season 1 is really amazing.
    Season 2 is even better,,,
Season 3 is a short season but has the same octane level as the first 2.

Can't wait for Labor Day. Season 4 premire !!!
    ^
Also gonna have to get that South Park Season 11 dvd set !!!
  • Tippit
I agree Prison Break is top notch. Fast paced, action filled and tension filled. Its like a cooler version of the early 24 seasons. It also employs some of elements of Lost in my opinion just in different ways.
  • AEC
Love Prison Break. There is some truth to " characters constantly switching roles, hopping in and out of prison" But, its not what you think. They make it work in the context of the show and is usually part of a overall bigger plan. Sometime the seasons seem like jumbled confusion but when the season finale comes around it final pays off and comes together showing that they actually have everything planned its not just them bending the show to fit there needs.

Not everywhere, pal- especially here we had nice stuff imported like "Damages", "Nip Tuck" and Prison Break, too but all ratings are not as high as expected. Especially Damages and Niptuck totally failed, so did "Las Vegas" and other great series, too.

On the other hand stuff like "House" or "Monk" work pretty good...
