The dystopian future imagined by Trent Reznor is synergy-friendly. Some have argued that it’s cliche. The savvy Nine Inch Nails frontman tells the LA Times that he recently met with HBO about adapting the themes of his Year One concept album (and cultish alternate reality game) into an ambitious sci-fi series…

“I just pitched it to HBO two weeks ago in L.A. It went great. Ideally, we’re trying to get them to do a two-year limited series. I prefer that over a film. We would have a second ARG tying into the second album and ties into the series and they all happen together with a budget needed to pull that all off. There would be a tour down the road. The record completes the story, the ending that no one knows. I know what happens. I knew when I started it. And it’s not what people think. “

Reznor’s anti-Bush vision takes place in 2022, or as a totes-screwed America has labeled it, Year One. The government has brainwashed its citizens, done away with civil liberties and much of the landscape is in shambles. There’s also a lot of well-designed propaganda. The idea of a feature film or a TV show was conceptualized near the beginning according to Reznor, who says that writers are already attached. According to the NY Times, producer Lawrence Bender is seeing the series through.

Discuss: Reznor sounds pretty focused on this. Would you like to see a Year Zero series from HBO?

OMFG I WAS JUST READING ABOUT VIRAL MARKETING ON WIKI AND IT TALKED ABOUT NIN'S YEAR ZERO THING AND THEN I WENT TO GOOD 'OL SLASHFILM AND IT TALKED ABOUT YEAR ZERO! WEIRD, HUH!

    -sorry, caps...
  • zerostate
    that is weird
  • vader182
    that would be wicked rad
  • I am a HUGE Nine Inch Nails fan and this sounds awesome.
  • Dangerous Dave
I've been hoping for some sort of movie tie-in for the album for a while, although I wish they'd do it for Tool's 10,000 Days.
  • Ian
    No, thank you.

Just give me more music for free, Mr. Reznor, even though I don't like it very much.
  • Matma
I'm a huge NIN fan. I would love to see something like this.
  • JB
    Ahhhhhh, snore.
  • I almost wet my pants when I read this. This is the best idea for television. Lost fans are going to eat this up.
  • A.J.
I gasped when I read this head-line! I can't wait! I hope it all works out and we'll get to see a series based on this kick-ass premise!
  • Captain Molotov
I am an enormous NIN fan. Year Zero is actually in my CD player right now; I shit you not. This would be fucking awesome, but only if Trent was heavily involved - although knowing him he probably wouldn't have it any other way, the guy is a control freak.

I followed the whole viral marketing thing before the album came out (yes, it was long before the Dark Knight marketing and did a better job in my opinion) but this album's ARG took over my life for a few months. It was so in depth, i can't believe Trent created it. I've been interested to see if he was ever going to follow through on the movie/tv miniseries idea and im glad to see he is finally thinking about the follow up album and the idea of continuing the viral marketing. GO TRENT!!

To be perfectly honest I haven't read into the concepts behind the Year One album and the ARG, but based on this description:

"The government has brainwashed its citizens, done away with civil liberties and much of the landscape is in shambles. There’s also a lot of well-designed propaganda."

Is it just me or does this sound an awful lot like Orwells "1984". Of course Year One sounds like a good idea because it is a good idea because its already been done.
  • Matador
It would be amazing!!! I hope it happens
  • Captain Awesome
    ct,

One thing I told people is they really missed out when the viral campaign for YZ began. Trent orchestrated the whole thing and it was executed so fucking well. I have never seen a marketing campaign like that for an album ever. As evidence by Chance's post. It was nothing short of brilliant.

This HBO venture sounds very interesting. I read a blip about it a few days ago.

bottom line - a follow up album.
... and as a fan of NIN, that is what I truly care about. If a show designed around it is good, so be it, but that is just a bonus. Reznor is a gifted guy and I have no doubt he'd do well in making this a good thing. At the very least, I imagine a show backed by some sweet sound.

Ultimately, I don't have time for all the viral stuff. It's intriguing marketting, but it's only entertainment for a very small segment of audience. (I did follow the Cloverfield viral and I can see how fans of that would love this sort of thing).
  • Joe
Once I read into the viral marketing (which is surprisingly deep and cool), I started to get excited. I'd watch it.

(Damn you, Reznor, for postponing Friday's show. Shoulda just played Ghosts.)
  • fex
    No. I wouldn't.

Bring it, let's wake some ppl Up!!!
  • bumbeach
oh i just thought they were a band
  • zerostate
    haha!
  • Brody
    Holy fuck that be cool.
  • Captain Awesome
    gocitizen,

It ended up being worth it for the ones who did keep up with the YZ campaign. They got a free show out of it if they figured out everything until the last message.

Which I thought was great payback to the hardcore fans.
  • gocitizen
    Cap -
that is pretty awesome- would have been worth it, for sure. Reznor gives a lot back. Have to admire that.
  • Captain Awesome
Even if you dont like what he does as a musician. I'd hope for people to appreciate what he does do for his fanbase.

The way he set up that free show for the fans was fairly cool. They got some cryptic mail package, and had to wear this NIn sticker somewhere on their body. Then had to meet at some undisclosed location and were ushered into vans by guys in military type garb (O_o)

And then carted off to a warehouse where the show was put on.
  • Conn
Actually, the album is Year Zero, not Year One

    Just sayin
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
Great fuckin' album, great fuckin' concept, great fuckin' band, can't wait to see the show. I am freaking out about this, on the inside, but freaking out nonetheless. Trent Reznor's a genius, and damn, can I not wait for this.

Anyone who is skeptical, check out the story, it's really in-depth and well done. http://www.ninwiki.com/Timeline_of_Year_Zero_Di...
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
Well, after going back and looking at the timeline of events, it would be incredibly complicated to put together this show... Who would we follow, would it be centered around specific people the whole show? Would we see multiple story arcs? That might work, but I feel the best way might be to just have different episodes that are individual stand-alone chapters.
  • Troy
Cool, Keep us posted on more info!!!
  • Meli
I love NIN and admire Trent for his years of dedication to his craft and fans. I would definitely watch this if HBO moves forward.
  • John
Ever since this was hinted at during the intial release of Year Zero, it's been something I've been looking forward to. I just hope it at least makes it to DVD.
  • zerostate
Lets Get On With It. If you have something criticizing to say about this endeavor we would appreciate you going elsewhere to say it. Because I assure you it's not helping anyone, especially if this endeavor is still in the consideration mode. If this does get off the ground, rest assured it will be groundbreaking. Let's hold tight. c'mon guys.
  • AOK
Is there any information about what point HBO is at in the progress of this project? As is, casting calls, production status, location of project?
