Angelina Jolie Replaces Tom Cruise

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Angelina Jolie has officially replaced Tom Cruise in Philip Noyce’s upcoming thriller Edwin A. Salt. Kurt Wimmer’s screenplay follows a CIA officer who is fingered as a Russian sleeper spy, and must eludes capture while proving that someone else is the traitor. The script will be redrafted to account for the gender change, and the project will be retitled (likely with the name of Jolie’s character). In Wimmer’s original draft, Salt is described as an friendly everyman. I’m guessing that this aspect might also change in the Jolie rewrite - I mean, who is going to confuse Jolie for the “everywoman”? The project has been circled by a few big name stars and appeared on the coveted 2007 black list.

Interesting, like Jolie more then Cruise so I dont mind.

bad idea. re working the entire script is almost never a good thing

This doesn't strike me as strange in the slightest. I don't think we should think it odd if a white actor is replaced by a black one, or a man by a woman. We're all people... who gives a fuck.
  • andy
    mmmkay then...odd?
  • Matt
That'd just make it Edwina Salt, right?
  • Andrea
    What is the 2007 blacklist?
  • duca
This is an interesting development. It seems that yet again Cruise has found himself in a state of unemployment, ne?

    "What is the 2007 blacklist?"
yea I was wondering that too
  • Hendo
ok well that was easy lol googled it...

    "The Black List 2007
There’s an annual list that circulates around Hollywood towards the close of the year.

It’s called The Black List and it contains the favourite scripts as voted for by over 150 agents and top level assistants.

The author of the list - development executive Franklin Leonard - pitches the document not as a “best of” list, more a “most liked” one. The only restriction is the scripts can’t be for films released in that particular calendar year."

Anyway of getting a hold of that list?

A complete re-write is a bad idea btw.

I don't see it as a big deal, but I do wonder what will ever get Cruise back in favor once again. I don't really mind him and I can look past his personal crap, but he has reached a point where his persona is bigger than the film. Perhaps, he should just concentrate on doing supporting characters for a while - seemed to work for him in Magnolia.

Mr Clear > vs < spiderwoman

    I hate them both ,,,

I welcome the change. Its not like they have to rewrite the entire script, I doubt its going to have and effect on the overall script because its not really that hard to change a mans role into a womens role these days. I dont know anything about this movie but Jolie is a tough girl so she can pull of even a mans script. Plus a rewrite is probably just like little things that men would do instead of women (hopefully).

I feel bad for Cruise. His off-screen drama (aliens, Holmes kidnap, weirdness) has absolutely killed his career. He's always very believable on-screen, probably one of the finest actors of all-time and one of my faves despite the nonsense.

Jolie's lips and other features always distract me (definitely not "everywoman"!) so this news is a tragedy. :)

I too wonder what he thought of his work on the magnificent Magnolia: the supporting role, lack of publicity and if he'd be willing to go there again.

I'm down with this plan. I'd rather watch Jolie than Cruise anyday.
  • Can't wait until they cast Brad Pitt opposite Jolie, and call the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
  • hell YES!!!!!!!!!!!! fuckin sweet.

this is a great move for women in Hollywood, for they rarely replace big male leads with female actresses.

Do you think this is a trend begun (or perhaps, galvanized) by Cate Blanchett's turn in I'm Not There?

why is Jolie still considered an A-list actor?

    she stars in garbage.

Looks like psychiatry is so powerful they even control Hollywood. Maybe Tom should not have exposed psychiatry and stayed quiet like Angelina.
