The Taking of Pelham One Two Three Now on Hulu

If you’re looking for a safe bet, or if you simply loathe modern orange actors like Matthew McConaughey, Hulu.com is now streaming The Taking of Pelham One Two Three in its entirety. Judging from the above poster, the film looks like a pulpfest, and to a degree it is, but it’s also an overlooked, hardboiled thriller with two no-bullshit performances from the late greats, Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. Arguably a third star in the film is New York City; the metropolis’s daily grind and ’70s grime is so well captured by director Joseph Sargent viewers practically suffer the screeches and the subway smells. And then there’s the perfect ending. We don’t mean to nag, but with a remake starring Denzel and Travolta due in 2009, you might want to check it out while the plotting and twists remain fresh.

Discuss: Anyone a fan? Anticipating Tony Scott’s remake? Feel free to recommend other films starring Shaw and Matthau below.

  • Sweet! I've been wanting to see this one.

I loved the original, but with all these heist movies most recently Spike Lee's Inside Man..I really think the genre is overdone, and I'm wondering how Scott is going to impress us...besides updating it

That said I love Tony Scott's films the good and the bad

The original is definitely a classic (and that ending really puts it over the edge). I'm not a fan of the whole "remake everything" school of thought in Hollywood, but this one might turn out OK. I think Tony Scott is a capable director, and it's hard to go wrong with Denzel. Hopefully the updated script doesn't get too crazy with it - if the movie stays true to the original, I'll be pleased with it.

    Hunter,

could you name another modern 'orange' actor besides Matthew McConaughey?
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ jimbo

Off the top on a Sunday? Brendan Fraser, Dane Cook, The Rock's eyebrows, Denzel Washington, John Travolta in Swordfish, Antonio Banderas, the stars of Sex in the City.

"Orange" is a state of mind, but in the case of McCononaughey, it has manifested on the surface. Also, any actor photographed next to him with the exception of Woody Harrelson, who made Kingpin (lifetime orange pass).

im interested in the remake, but it wont be as good. its kindof a hard movie to fuck up too bad, but casting denzel washington as the good cop again is kindof fail. seen that shi over 9000 times so his character is automatically not interesting. also, the last shot in the movie, in my opinion, is the most memorable of the film, and they wont be able to recreate how perfect it is.

dude remake of this would be awesome. I just saw the trailer and it looks pretty sick.
  • If you have any interest in 70s cinema, the original TAKING should be on your immediate "to see" list.

The remake, however, will undoubtedly suck, as Tony Scott has only made one good movie in his career...and that was an advertisement for BMW.

Let's hope their asking for more than a million dollars.
  • It would be interesting if, in the remake, they do ask for $1 million and the ransom is paid in the first 30 minutes.

Then the rest of the movie is about them trying to escape the police.

I can't wait for the first dipshit tv reviewer who accuses them of stealing "tarantino's idea in Resevoir dogs of using colours for names"
  • charles
    that was pretty good.
  • I had never seen Pelham, but just watched via Hulu over the course of the day.

Cool flick. If anyone is remaking it I assume they'll be 1) jacking up the price, though 1hr is still tough to get $$ together and 2) tweaking the ending somehow.

Anyway, if I could get Hulu on my actual TeeVee that would be awesome. I hate the clunky OnDemand menus Comcrap gives me.
  • Joseph Ferrarelli
    I don't know.
The movie was good, but it took a little while to get going.
If in the remake they incorporated some more suspense and some
    legitimate action, I can't wait.
  • You have many international readers and hulu simply sucks for people outside of the States. Something to keep in mind.
