The Princess and the Frog Concept Art

Disney Animation Studios has released new concept artwork from Disney’s return to 2D animation, The Princess and the Frog. More images after the jump.

Written/directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, the animated musical is set in New Orleans.

The movie follows Tiana, a young African-American girl who lives in the infamous French Quarter.

The new movie will feature a soulful trumpet playing crocodile, a love sick Cajun firefly, voodoo spells, and the music of Randy Newman.

The Princess and the Frog hits theaters on Christmas 2009.

Wow. Looks fantastic. Made me feel all nostalgic of all the old Disney 90 classics, but this looks like it has very beautiful little details that they couldn't do with old animation. I'm extremely excited. I hope Lasseter pulls out all the stops.
  • I'll pass.
  • Palmer
So, another bastardization of a classic fairy tale? Not that I have anything against Disney movies, well "Classic" movies. The new stuff they churn out is complete garbage; however, stuff made in collaboration with Pixar is an exception. Wait, what was I talking about again?
  • Sergemeister
    ^Seriously.

How good can this possibly be? I'll eat my own words after watching this in theatres, I'm sure, but one can't help but think that this form of animation has been surpassed in every way by Pixars animation studios. I love the old Disney flicks all the way up to Tarzan ... maybe Lilo & Stitch. Can you recall all of the other not-so-great movies afterwards? No? That's because no one watched them!

I'd like to see more animated flicks of characters and not just Princesess. Hopefully, this movie adds to the great Disney Classics and doesn't kill the medium completely by crashing and burning. One can always hope...
  • Loana
    LOL

I seriously laughed out loud when I read the words "Pixar" and "surpassed" in the same sentence. Now before all the Pixar fans club me to death, know that I like Pixar. I like it a lot. But not even the best Pixar movies come close to the magic of classic Disney 2D films...there's a humour, a quirkiness, a sense of magic that just doesn't exist in 3D animation, and arguably never will.

As for your grievances against princesses, I find that highly arrogant. Would you argue that Belle, Ariel and Jasmine were bad characters? That they each weren't unique and original? Seems to me like the title "princess" is enough for you to dismiss the wonderful story, animation, music and general magic of those classic movies.
  • Chris
Its nice to get back to basics, kinda sad that future kids will look at the classics as boring. And not just the old stuff like Cinderella or Snow White, but Toy Story, Hercules etc. All they will want is the new stuff (Cars, Finding Nemo). Not that its bad but
  • Chris
    Damn pressed submit by accident.

Not that its bad but people are getting spoiled by special effects.
  • september11th
spoiler: nobody here gives a shit about frog princess
  • TheDaftPunk
Actually, I prefer the 2D animation, probably because I'm such a big Miyazaki fan. Anything can beat Treasure Planet.
  • krackajap
I think I'll just watch Genius Party twice and forget about this one.
  • Captain Awesome
That's one thing I love how the traditional Disney artists, they have "true" painters in their fold. Each of those background pieces could easily be put up on museum walls. So far the art for this is stunning. That New Orleans street shot, Mansion, and that tree are awe-inspiring.

If any of you are ever in a book store. Check out the artbooks for Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear. The concept to finished art for those films is insane. Thats one of the things I love about Disney's 2d concept art over Pixar's 3d concept art. Pixar doesn't even come close to producing this quality of concept art for their own films. It's great to see that Uncle Walt's art teaching and mantra's have not been lost after all these years.

You know what would be killer? a Disney, Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli team-up...oh, I just came.

It looks great, America need to return to 2d movies again. I have faith in john lasseter. He gave us toy story!

Stop the hating until you see the movie you retards
  • Samantha Pruitt
    @ Chris

i totally agree, i loved those old movies, and of course the soundtracks, the new movies don't have any of the great songs that we all remember from the 90s and the other classic movies, ie "Colors of the Wind" "Hakuna Matata" and "A Whole New World" they're all classics, and we all know the words to them. I want to be able to sing those songs with my kids one day!

"Finding Nemo" and the rest are great movies and are really funny, but i just have more fond memories from the 2D ones, i also like them more because i appreciate all the work that goes into people drawing things that flawlessly all by hand. I know that there is a lot of work that goes into the CG stuff, but the hand drawn stuff just feels more genuine and real to me.
  • Loana
I know exactly what you mean. There's a "life" in drawings done with pencil, paper and a skilled hand. The best actting I've ever seen --better than so called "real" actors--has been in Disney movies. The expressions, the gestures, they're so in tuned to each indivdual character...to this day I find it amazing that not only was Walt Disney able to start up a studio and produce feature films, but he was able to to so at such a high quality that few movies would ever reach that standard ever again.
  • krackajap
I think the chances of Miyazaki ever teaming up Disney again are pretty slim. After what they did to Nausicaa and what they tried to do to Mononoke Hime, I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed as far away from disney as possible.
  • Captain Awesome
    krackajap,

Miyazaki was very happy with what they did. He said Lasseter and Neil Gaiman did a great job with the Mononoke translation. He was also very happy with Nausicaa's translation.

    I liked them aswell.
  • krackajap
We haven't exactly been kind to Miyazaki's work. If I recall, the first release of Nausicaa was horribly butchered worse than the US version of One Piece. The ONLY reason Mononoke turned out the way it did was Miyazaki was because Miyazaki had to explicitly put in the contract that they won't make any cuts because they did want cut the film to make it more appealing.
  • gocitizen
great concepts. if only it could translate stylistically to the finished film. I guess we will see, but any of the early footage has me wondering. I'd prefer that they try something a little more stylized (Hercules, Lilo, Emporer's NG). I'm wondering why they chose this route for their return. You'd think they would want to get as much out of the medium as they could.

I guess we will all see.

With the exception of a few films, Miyazaki's work is overrated. Just not my thing.
  • gocitizen
oh... and I second the thought about Genius Party - that film looks amazing and worth waiting for.
  • mikle
I'm pretty damn excited about this. Maybe it is a princess. I don't care. I am pretty tired of all these 3D movies. Wall-E was amazing. My favorite from the 3D bunch, but I love 2D. You tend to appreciate the artwork. The palettes used.

Someone said there were many 2D disney movies that have been overlooked due to them "churning" them out. Has anyone actually watched all the 3D movies? There are like tons I haven't even seen. Tons that are coming out. Most look so very uninteresting as well. Don't dog disneys 2D!
  • blueberry
I am actually completely excited just for the chance to see Disney's return to the musical format. I can't even begin to describe how many of the 90s movies I memorized music for as a child. It will be absolute icing on the cake if the animation turns out anywhere as good as the concept art.

For the record, The Lion King and Finding Nemo sit pretty for me up there in the animation top two, with Wall-E coming close.
  • alice
I am feeling alright about it. With the exception of the firefly the character design is looking fine. The only thing that is really getting my goat is the lighting/shading style that looks very digital (seen in the trailer).
  • Troy Colby
I am glad to see a disney 2d movie getting made!
  • -JEE-R;;,RRYB----UT-Le_R
Looking at that pic up there begs the question. Did they give a big butt just cause she's black?

don't remember sleeping beauty or Snow white sporting that kind of junk in the trunk.
  • Captain Awesome
    Jerry,

It's great isn't it? We need more booty on cartoon women. No pancake asses for me homie.
  • ciji
I'm guessing it's just the kind of skirt she's wearing, fellas.

    Or a badonkadonk.
  • FINALLY! A 2D animated Disney film, I am tired of (and over) all the CGI knockoffs of Finding Nemo since 2003. They all looked the same. Hopefully this will do well.
  • GiantYoda
This looks great. YES - Pixar is about as close to a modern deity in terms of animation these days. That said, it will be a breath of fresh air to see a good 2-D animated venture by Disney. Sure, its not traditional (as in 9-Old Men traditional), but it should be a quality animated/musical experience. I'm looking forward to it.
  • Anne
I'm crazy excited for this film, and these images are just plain beautiful. There's something about 2-D animation that 3-D just can't top, in my opinion. Disney 2-D films are so popular and so loved because they didn't just have "good special effects", they had great animation, stories, music, backgrounds, and really believable characters.

I'm really hoping that this movie brings back the hand-drawn animations. In my opinion, you can do much more with a pencil than a computer.
  • TESTEMENT
Never underestimate the power of disney , High school musical, pirates, hanna montana. But besides them Disney wouldn't do anything unless it was the best...........IT'S DISNEY!
  • WALT!
If we've learned anything from Miyazaki films it's that 2 d is alive and well! In the end it's all about the story. Pixar is great BUT it's not killing 2d movies, if pixar puts out a crap movie...doesn't matter how it looks nobody's gonna see it. If this movie is gonna be as good as the concept art then it'll shup up those haters ^^ up there
  • Rosario
    @Chris, Samantha, and everyone else

I completely agree, I think what makes the 2D movies the greates is the soundtracks. To this day I can listen to any song from Lion King, Pochantas, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, and still be amazed by them. I couldn't name one song from any of these pixar movies then maybe "Life is a highway" from Cars but that doesn't hold nothing to the classics. Man, just thinking about those make me seem old and im only 19.
  • Samantha Pruitt
i always thought Pocahontas, Jasmine and Esmerelda were quite tasty! they are women of color, the white characters never did anything for me.

But Disney sure does know how to create some fine looking dudes, Aladdin, John Smith, Tarzan, Kocoum!
  • Windstorm
Great concept art! I just found out some new info about the film, so if you do not like spoilers then do not proceed to read what I am about to reveal. It has officially been announced recently on another website by the film-makers that the Prince will no longer be known as Naveen but Levine. Prince Levine? I personally like Naveen better :)
  • Loanna
I like Naveen better too! But honestly? This prince looks nothing like a "Naveen" so the name change is good.

It's too bad they go rid of the original Prince, Harry. I liked his concept art much better.
  • After seeing these concept arts and the first glimpse of Prince Naveen...or Levine..or whatever (the fourth picture down), I have to say I am BEYOND excited about this movie coming out! ^___^ I'm sure it'll be wonderful and such a great homage to the wonderful 2D animation that did so well in the mid and late 90's. Disney can definitely come back with this. *nods* I can't wait for this, and I know in my heart Tiana will be an inspiration to all little girls, not just Black Americans. ^_^
  • Loanna
Definitely! I'm not black (or a little girl for that matter!) , but I can't wait for Tiana!
  • Loana
Okay, let's just get something clear.

Treasure Planet was visually stunning. It was the botched up mis-matched story that turned viewers off.
  • Loanna
    Hmm...I didn't notice it.

One thing that could explain this though was that Snow White was 13 or 14--barely an adolescent-- while Tiana is supposed to be a more "well developed" nineteen year old. You can see in that Snow doesn't have ANY curves at all.
