Many people predicted that it wouldn’t happen, but The Dark Knight won its fourth straight weekend, taking in $26 million, compared to Pineapple Express‘ estimated $22.5 million. The last film to accomplish this feat was 2003’s Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. In less than a month, the Batman Begins sequel has grossed $441.5 million domestically, making it the third highest grossing film of all time (before inflation of course), knowing Shrek 2 from the throne. The only two films which have made more money domestically (before inflation) are Star Wars and Titanic.

The Dark Knight will likely top Star Wars’ $460.9 million in the coming weeks. And while unlikely, box office analysts aren’t counting the film out of the all-time race tp $600 million. The film has also grossed $263 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $704.6 million. To give you some perspective, The Dark Knight just surpassed Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Forrest Gump and The Sixth Sense on the worldwide chart.

I knew someone was going to use "smoke" :P

Its starting to dwindle from the top, i predict now that Tropic Thunder will edge out The Dark Knight this week.
  • Pineapple would have knocked it off if it hadn't moved its release back to Wednesday.

    batman isn't smokeable!

    [R3D],

People said the same thing about The Mummy 3 and Pineapple Express. This bat's got some wings on him.

keep on chugging along, TDK. :]

I've seen Tropic Thunder and it will dethrown it BUT it might NOT due to the fact that kids, younger than 18, will pay for TDK tickets and sneak into the new Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Rober "Iron Man" Downey Jr. film. It WILL happen
  • JackDurden
Dark Knight will be #3 next weekend. Tropic Thunder #2.

Star Wars The Clone Wars will probably make it at #1, being kid friendly, PG-13, and a STAR WARS MOVIE (albeit not a live action one but you can still understand what I mean).

Tropic Thunder's Wednesday opening will surely lessen it's weekend take, and like Eric above mentioned, underage people who want to see Tropic Thunder will buy tickets for other movies to go in, meaning the movie's intake won't reflect it's attendance.

fukin go get em nolan(s) & co!!!

    @ cap awesome

if heath had been able to do the next one, do you think that the chance to see him in the role again would build enough of a frenzy to top TDK's records?
  • Buckley
That just gave me a little faith it could top Titanic. I spoke to somebody today who said they saw it yesterday for the first time and when they went it was sold out. Firstly I thought wow how have you not seen it yet and then I thought WOW still sold out? EVERYBODY is going to end up getting around to see the Dark Knight because it has become such a cultural phenomneon which is the exact reason people went to go see Titanic. It was the one movie everybody no matter who you were basically had to go see. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing makes a steady 20 million each week until it surpasses Titanic. I wonder if Warner has any plans to start a second wind advertising campaign for the film. It'd be smart, the thing still has a lot of life left in it. But then again, if it settles down around 525 I wouldn't be surprised either. nah

    KEEP ON CHUGGIN DARK KNIGHT!
  • Sergemeister
Star Wars: The Clone Wars looks like garbage from what I've seen on screen so far (various trailers, promotional footage). It looks like someone (maybe George Lucas) is trying to net a few bucks from the once-popular Clone Wars Cartoon Network special's success. I'm a huge Star Wars fan but seriously, the previews show that Anakin has a Padawan! WTF?!? If that doesn't make you NOT want to watch this, just remember that it is aimed at kids, it is Star Wars, and possibly this generations Droids and Ewoks.

I also got a chance to catch a screenign of Tropic Thunder and it's you're regular ol' Ben Stiller comedy, fun and funny with a bunch of cameos. It had me laughing all through the first 3/4 of the film but kinda dives on the funny towards the end. Don't get me wrong, I love Ben Stiller comedies but Peter Griffin was right when he said "His movies are terrible". So if you're into that type of comedy, go see Tropic Thunder. Let me just say that Booty Sweat Energy Drink is going to be one of the most popular drinks of 2008!!!

I've gone to see the Dark Knight 3 times so far. I still have a discount coupon that came with BB Blu-Ray to watch it again. It expires by the 18th so I'll have to catch that flick again before it's too late! It is one of the most re-watchable movies ever. The fact that the movie will only be in theatres for so long and that watching it in theatres is the only way to experience both the great sound and outstanding movie quality (especially IMAX), leaves you wanting to watch it more and more before they pull it off the big screen.

I seriously doubt that Tropic Thunder will beat Dark Knight. I'm hoping Dark Knight beats out Titanic just because that movie needs to be taken out of it's on misery. Thanks to soccer moms and kids that loved the incredibly annoying Jar Jar Binks and the new breed of Star Wars films, The Clone Wars might be a contender.
  • Chump Force 1
PE actaully beat TDK for the 5 day Wed-Sun total by about 5 milion...like a couple others mentioned if PE was relased on Friday it would have beak TDK, but the Olympics threw everything off this weekend.
  • Chump Force 1
Oh and for those that think TDK will beat Tropic Thunder, you inhaled too much second hand smoke from PE this weekend. Assuming TDK drops a relatively low 40% from this weekend you're looking at a weekend take of around $15-$18 million.

Tropic Thunder is projected to make around a total of 150 million and has a current 7.7 rating on IMDB...look for a 4-50 million opening for TT next weekend. Clone Wars will be #2 (sorry all you Lucas haters) and TDK will be #3.

Batman Smokes Pineapple Express, that's not gonna help him with all the other charges against him.
He's gonna have to clear his name and pee in a cup, maybe do some community service. Sheesh.

I so hope Tropic Thunder launches a fleet of X-Wings against the fracken clone wars.
    Damm that stupid cartoon !!!!!
  • Superman
Wow batman beat to fags smoking weed. What a surprise...
  • 790
    Where's the Spelling Nazi now,?
    Afraid of Superman ????

    Yeah I thougt so,,,,

    OC,

I'm fairly sure if Heath was still around, his return would definitely secure a nice "chunk" of ticket sales. Even if the third film only featured the Ledger Joker partly.

But when you think about it. Nolan and team have secured themselves a sure-fire audience for another film. But they need to do it right.
  • 790
    Captain,
keep in mind, there's a chance that Nolan edited Heaths final scenes and has addtional deleated scenes he could be saving for the next film,,,,,
Heath died during the editing phase of the film,,,,, Nolans not stupid,,,

    I'm betting TDK3 is gonna rock !!!!!
  • [R3D]
    @Captain Awesome

    Not hatin just sayin ;)
  • Captain Awesome
    @ [R3D]

oh, I didn't mean to come off like I thought you were. Sorry :P

    @ 790

Yeah that could be a possibility. I'm not saying Nolan wasn't forward thinking. But who knows what could be used. I mean it was cut from an almost 3 hour theatre final for a reason I guess.

I posted this on Digg but it is needed here too.

"Why does every article have to bring in the fact that with inflation this is only at 49th? Do they ever bring the state of the economy into the picture? What about the fact that when Gone With The Wind was released there wasn't another huge film being released every week (Pineapple Express, Step Brothers, Mummy, X-Files, or even beforehand with Hellboy II and Hancock)? Or the fact that back then (or even with Titanic, Star Wars, any of them) they didn't have to worry about piracy? Say what you will about it but if every person that downloaded the film went and saw it instead, that would be quite a bit more money coming in. Or what about Titanic being number one for 15 straight weeks? Movies aren't in theaters for more than two or so months anymore and are usually on DVD within 6 months of release. Titanic was still in theaters 6 months after release.

The fact is that you can't just say "adjusted for inflation". There are waaay too many factors to point out. The fact that this movie is going to break $500 million in less than two months is amazing. The fact that it is going to do it in this economy is even more amazing. And what is the international box office pull? What this film has done is something to marvel at, not demote for not being tops due to inflation. Why can't people just look at something for what it is, what it has done and not pick it apart for not being good enough according to something as trivial as inflation."
  • evilnik
just imagine with the DVD release for TDk...its gonna blow the accountants off the warner bros office counting the money!!!!
  • gocitizen
TDK3? hey, wait - was there a TDK1? It makes you wonder what they will call a 3rd film in this story arc. That will be as anticipated as anything.

Heath Ledger possibilities would be a draw, but not necessary at all for a 3rd film's success. Someone else will step in and ball park a performance. I have no doubts.
  • Gajonka
hA! eat that rogen you no-talent loser! GET SOME!!!

wow it seems like we have a dark knight discussion almost everyday now. not that i don't hate the dark knight because i love the movie.

three things i have to say about the dark knight's chances

    1. tropic thunder will dethrone it, if not that then star wars

    2. this will not dethrone titanic

    3. as for all the batman fanboys who complain about the teenage girls going to see titanic over and over again, aren't you guys doing the same thing going to see the dark knight over and over again. i've been a batman fan all my life but it doesn't matter to me if it beats titanic because the domestic record means nothing to me since ticket prices have changed every year.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    What hath Nolan wroght?
  • Captain Awesome
    Bob,

    Wow, just, wow.
  • Superman
Stop kidding yourselves. Star Wars is dead. This animated shit won't make a dime. And tropic thunder looks retarded. I'd be surprised if this batman kills two face movie doesn't coast at the top for along while. There's no fucking competition, fucking traveling pants.
  • Ohiofile
Pineapple Express sucked. Can Hollywood please find another comedy group to over expose? If it's not Will Ferrell and the frat pack, it's Seth Rogen and the comedy mafia or whatever they're calling them. I'm just getting tired of the same old thing. As for TDK, if I were an executive at WB, or a crew member of the film, or receiving some kind of back end for the performance of this thing, then I might care if it beat Titanic. Instead, I just really liked the movie. Enough to see it twice. But I'm not on some kind of TDK team. Captain Awesome are you making money off this thing? Also, let's stop with the canonization of Heath Ledger. He is fantastic in that movie, however, the guy is not irreplaceable. As the LA Times put it, he was not taken from us, he left. As sad as it is that he died and as horrible as it must be for fan boys everywhere that he won't reprise the Joker, his selfish actions were his downfall and the fact that he won't be there for his family is the true tragedy.
  • Bob
what do you mean wow just wow. i am stating my opinion. tropic thunder is going to win this weekend and the dark knight will not beat tiitanic. i still love my batman movies no matter what. i just find it annoying that everyone else complains about teenage girls seeing titanic multiple times when us batman fans are doing the same thing with the dark knight
  • Captain Awesome
Yes, I just got another check from WB this morning.
  • Dan
Haven't people been proven wrong every week since it opened? How can we possibly predict what's going to happen with The Dark Knight the rest of the way out?

This is a great movie, period.
This is a summer blockbuster, period.
This is a superhero movie, period.
This is one of the most famous comic book icons of all time, period.

That's all we know. Anything else, I'm afraid, is just going to be too hard to try and predict.
  • Christine
Aw, if someone was going to smoke TDK, I wanted it to be those guys!
