When my brother and I were growing up there was a bully in our neighborhood who tormented him because he had Down syndrome, calling him a "retard". Well, guess what, the bully (now 20 years later) has a son of his own with Down syndrome... I see him and his son occasionally around town and they're always together... he acts like he's totally in love with his kid. Ironic, huh?

In 1972 Cheech and Chon included rolling papers in their album, Big Bambu, 36 years later they cant even say the word "Retard" in a movie. What the hell has happened to this world...

"For years I used the “r” word myself to describe stupid things I did and generally I don’t put restrictions on things that are said and done in movies because I think people should be smart enough to realize that it’s a film - not reality."

Like I said earlier, everything is funny until its about you. Then when it happens to you, suddenly you feel like complaining. Funny..isn't it.

My other thought is that this movie is a farce, a satire, a comedy. It is not mean spirited. Those who genuinely spit hate speech, I don't like them anymore than you do, but they have a right to say it, like you have a right to speak your mind. But do not protest a movie you have not seen and satire you are seemingly unable to comprehend.

Very well said Tina! I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around. I am sure one day many of the people on here who made such demeaning and childish comments about our special needs population will want to eat their words when they themselves become disabled or a family member becomes disabled. I am sure we are all guilty of saying things "without thinking" that are hurtful but the people on here who are deliberately trying to be insulting should truly be ashamed. What is really amazing is how this forum does not follow it's own "Commenting Rules" which I copied and pasted below. What a joke!

"Commenting Rules" No hate speech allowed. If you must argue, please debate intelligently. Comments containing selected keywords or outbound links will be put into moderation to help prevent spam. /Film reserves the right to delete comments and ban anyone who doesn't follow the rules. Thank You"

Wow. I wasn't even following all the press on this movie because I usually don't put a lot of my energy into these kinds of things but my husband emailed me a few of them. Personally, I haven't seen the movie and can't comment on whether it's offensive or not. For years I used the "r" word myself to describe stupid things I did and generally I don't put restrictions on things that are said and done in movies because I think people should be smart enough to realize that it's a film - not reality.

Five years ago I had my first child and didn't even know how to react when they told me she had down syndrome. Like so many other parents that have commented in this thread - I know that my daughter is amazing. I also have a 3 year old son and everyday since his birth I've watch with wonder how he has learned how to walk, talk, eat etc.. with seemingly no effort. I have had to spend the last 5 years teaching my daughter how to do all of those things that we normally take for granted. It has definitely given me a new insight into the world of the disabled. I'm sure if it was up to my daughter, she wouldn't have chosen to be born with down syndrome. I doubt she likes the countless hours of speech, occupational and physical therapy she has to go to in order to learn things that come easily to the rest of us. I won't go into details about the countless hours she spends at doctors appointments also. She takes it all in stride though and says thanks you at the end of every appointment.
Although I have no comment on the movie since I haven't seen it for myself to judge - I am saddened by many of the remarks I have read in this thread of emails. I'm sure that not everyone on this thread has had to care for a disabled person or is disabled themselves but they have probably experienced some other kind of challenge in their lives. I hope that when you do face this challenge if you haven't already - whether it be fighting for your own life against cancer, struggling to make ends meet, having a parent with alzheimers or maybe like my daughter - you will have to struggle just to complete the simplest of tasks because you were born with an extra chromosome - I hope no on laughs or makes fun of you.

Well there are only about 300,000 chimpanzees estimated to be left in the world, and they could be considered more inteligent than some "retards"; but they don't even have basic human rights that "retards" are afforded by our courts of law. Humans are basically chimpanzees, and yet we allow our closest species relatives to not only be portrayed as fools in movies (instead of the majestic creatures that they are), but we don't even afford them basic human rights. Before we go whining about how "retards" are portrayed in some irrelevant Hollywood movie, we should be fighting for the basic right of our chimpanzee brothers and sisters to be able to live out their days in peace and freedom.

Approximately 2 to 3 percent of the population are mentally retarded. If we take 3 percent of the 300 million people that live in the United States alone, we come up with 9 million. That's alot of retards.

Seriously... here is some hate speech:

I hate this lame discussion...

I just saw this movie and it was great. The movie is making fun of Hollywood..not the mentally disabled... or as I like to call them.. retards. My Uncle Eddie is retarded and it's funny how everyone thinks that family members only say "mentally challenged" Nobody in my family says that.. they all say retarded, and nobody treats old Eddie with any disdain or malice.. they just say it as a word for what it means. Plus my family is all Armenian and don't give a rats butt about being PC. They are old school.. and it's refreshing to hear them talk after being surrounded all the time by PC whiners.

Now all you buck up and go drink some BOOTY SWEAT! YEYAH!

Everything is funny until the joke is on us, isn't it, Bob. Remember that the next time you laugh at something remotely off color: There is another one of YOU out there, and you're going to say the same thing I am: Its a fucking joke. To those who hate monger, fuck them; I agree, somethings simply aren't laughing matters. Except clown rape. Fuck clowns. Except pennywise-that fucker scares me.

And the point about "educating" people on a site like this? That has as much chance as China winning a gold medal. Or a silver. Or a bronze. Or even showing up for the rowing competition and being disqualified. I sure hope that dude got on the first plane out of Beijing. Communist countries do not have to dig holes in the desert in the middle of the night, you dig?

A quote from the web yesterday:

"When I heard about it, I felt really hurt inside," said Special Olympics global messenger Dustin Plunkett. "I cannot believe a writer could write something like that. It's not the way that we want to be portrayed. We have feelings. We don't like the word retard. We are people. We're just like any other people out there. We want to be ourselves and not be discriminated against."

It's not about satire. Here is a direct quote from the movie:

In a scene where an actor is discussing adoption of a child, Matthew McConaughey retorts, “at least you get to pick your kid, I’m stuck with mine, indicating a photo with a retarded son.

"I'm stuck with mine".............it almost makes my stomach turn.

Imagine sitting in the movie and hearing those words as the parent of a child with Down Syndrome.

I don’t have to imagine; I have such a child. And you know what, he is the greatest gift God could have ever given us. They know nothing but unconditional love. They do not know how to hate. They were put here in our presence, I believe, for that very purpose. If you asked me, if we could go back and change this, my answer would be
no. It is so disheartening to read that 90% of Down Syndrome babies are aborted. The parents have no idea what they have done, the gift they have refused.

Anyone who wants to see this movie, has that right, I would never argue against that. But don't tell me I do not have the right to "try" and educate others that this is hurtful to those who do not have the capacity to defend themselves.

For those on this forum to go so far as to taunt them and attack them, yes, shame on you.

For those on this forum to go so far as to taunt them and attack them, yes, shame on you.

Erin, may only be speaking for myself here, but shut the fuck up. Get off your soapbox. The best part about America is that it is your right to piss and moan about whatever it is you decide you want to piss and moan about each day you wake up, and it is my right to tell you to go fuck yourself. I love the "F" word, and I love aiming it at people like you who try to tell me what I can and cannot do, see, or say. You may not like what I have to say, and I certainly do not like reading your preachy, self-righteous comments, but if you stand up at all for what you say, you'll fight to the death for each of us to say it. If not, do us a favor and fuck right off.

Mr. Sciretta is certainly entitled to his opinion, and to see this movie, as are those who have enthusiastically agreed with him.
But it seems to me that comments with phrases like “if retards are offended, they should stand up and speak for themselves” or “F*** those retards” (as just two of dozens of examples on the page) are at least “inappropriate.” While this is to be expected in an online conversation, in a forum which promises to limit comments which don’t “follow the rules,” the presence of these suggest that those rules are not going to be enforced.

And in this case, unlike the movie, that language is not used in the context of a “satire of Hollywood,” it is used by individuals trying to make themselves appear bigger by criticizing someone else. This is exactly the concern which people with disabilities have over the phrases being used in this film: they will be quoted outside of the “context” of the film as genuinely hurtful, bullying words directed at real people with real feelings.

I am writing both as someone who initially thought this might be a funny movie to see—I’m always up for a critique of Hollywood, and I’ve found much of Ben Stiller’s work hilarious. But I’m also writing as the parent of a 5-year-old boy with Down syndrome, who is just as vibrant and full of potential as any other complex human being, and deserves better than being limited to a one-word identity.

Let’s maintain freedom of speech and expression for all kinds of people and all kinds of opinions. But let’s maintain some kind of level of “intelligent debate” which the site claims to promote.

Thanks.

Erin, have you seen the movie? If not, how can you say this movie portrays the matter negatively? It is not ok to make fun of any group? I don't even have a rebuttal I'm so speechless. I get the impression you're a very stressed person and that can have a profound effect on your health. Making fun of someone or a group is at most teasing, not hate speech or abuse, and imo hate speech is just something politicians made up. Everyone has to deal with teasing. I could even argue that if the handicapped have been teased more they'd be more hardened to it. There's always going to be adversities, and the important thing is to deal with them, imo that's not whining. Your complaint about so called curse words just shows how frail you are.

Shame on you for advocating humiliating people who are different in the name of humor. Shame on you for insulting those who would protest this humiliation and abuse. Words matter and they hurt when they are used as insults. People who are differently abled are often the victims of abuse and rejection and they don't need more negative media portrayals. It is not okay to make fun of any group. It is hate speech and it is abuse. And shame on you for allowing the use of the "F" word on this website, especially when it is aimed at other people.

The only "R" word that is acceptable is "respect" and this is what you need to learn to have for others.
