Four new character posters from JJ AbramsStar Trek have been revealed at VegasCon 08. TrekMovie was able to take a photo of the four posters, which like the Comic Con posters, combine to form the Star Trek delta emblem. Clockwise we have John Cho as Sulu, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Karl Urban as McCoy. Head on over to TrekMovie for a higher resolution version of the original photo.

am i the only one who isn't interested in this film at all?
  • orange cinema
and btw, i don't mean that in a smart ass way - im serioiusly curious if this film has any anticipation for ya'll, or any heavy buzz that i'm oblivious to.
  • Captain Awesome
    oc,

You're not alone. I just never got into Star Trek or anything relating to it whatsoever. I've always found it flaccid and boring. I guess this is Abrams way of hipping it up somehow.

And yet I still don't care one ounce for it.
  • 790
Is that a bad reflection or is Scotty losing his hair ?
I allways assumed they would give Pegg a hairpiece, having him as a balding Scotty is a complete letdown in his casting. Am I seeing that wrong ????

Chekov , looks nothing like the babyfaced crewman we didn't see til season 2, why he's even in this film is completly screwed.

McCoy and Sulu look good !!
AaaahH this is prob gonna tank so hard ,,,
  • Josh
Am I the only one who still believes Zachary Quinto was born specifically to play Spock? Seriously... look at the man
  • 790
Yeah I don't think he was born to play him but he's a great choice, and the actor is very lucky he's in 2 real popular series. Star Trek and Heroes.
  • John
one thing that is wrong is scotty was never bald. Maybe on the back of his head i could be wrong a the pic is messed up by the lighting.
  • 790
    orange cinema,,,,
There's a huge part of the Star Trek fanbase that's ready to see the film, there's another part of the fanbase that thinks this will suck. ????
  • Eric
I'm seeing this for the cast and cast alone. I never liked Star Trek. Only Star Wars and Stargate
  • cool
is it me or is there a reflection of master chief??? From halo
  • Rob
In broad agreement with Eric's comment above - no interest in Star Trek per se, (altho some of it's cultural impact is interesting) but a good cast for this, with a decent range of talent. *If* the writing is up to par it could be quite an interesting sci-fi flick for more than Trekkies alone.

Mind you, I look forward to the point in this comments thread that the die-hards wheel themselves in & start banging on about how Shatner was a "great ac-tor" and far better than any of these young whippersnappers will ever be, and why oh why didn't they disinterr original cast members, and yadda yadda yadda ;)
  • Jason
Beginning to look interesting. I was first interested when I heard that J. J. was going to direct because I'm a fan of Lost and M:I 3. I'll have to see where my interest ranks when a trailer with actual footage is released.
  • th1nk
I am really looking forward to this and the prospects of a trailer popping up withing the next month or so excites me.

Also, about Scotty, I'm a huge TOS fan, and I'm willing to let them ret-con his hair. =P
  • Rockme
@ cool, now that you mention it, yea
  • evanz
Three great things going on here. 1. Star Trek. 2. Simon Pegg (f*ck, has nobody here seen Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz?) and 3. John Cho (Harold and Kumar).
  • Tonberry2k
So does Simon Pegg look like Teller to anyone else?
  • evanz
    @Tonberry2k

Actually, I thought he looked like Paul Giamatti at first glance.
  • ---,-JEEeERRY --B-U.-T-L-E-R
damn was scotty always freakin old?

and wtf with Bones? thought he would be the oldest one, looks like some turd teen actor from like gossip girls :barf:
  • Albert Brodsky
Who cares of Scotty is bald? Simon Pegg gets a "pass for life" in my opinion. I'd never heard of the guy until Shaun of the Dead, and he owned it. Great addition to a movie I'm not that interested in.

The only Star Trek I enjoyed as a kid was The Wrath of Khan.

I watched Next Generation, but only because one of my best friends thought it was great. Me, not so much.
  • akumi okuda
All I've heard about this is that it was screened and folks loved it in an unfinished state. Seems like the buzz is pretty good so far, so why are people here complaining endlessly after seeing a single photo of each of the four main actors? Why not wait until you actually see some footage before you waste energy on getting upset? I could understand if you read the script and thought it was terrible, or thought Abrams was a terrible director, but to me this seems just like when people got all upset over Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker. Just wait and see for God's sake.
  • Superman
Phantom Menace 2. Fuk this movie.
  • 790
Evanz, what does Shaun of the dead have ANYTHING to do with Pegg, should we expext some good comedy out of Scotty? I can see your point if were looking at the Shaun of the Dead 2 poster, but this is Star Trek.
Same with Cho, is he gonna break out some Pineapple Express and get some laughs.
Sure I've seen those films. And they really have nothing to do with Star Trek.

This won't stop me from seeing the film, but sheesh man if they go to all the trouble to cast actors that resemble the original crew , they could at least go the whole way and not stop short on the look of the support staff.

I'm sure alot of Pegg fans won't care but ALOT of Scotty fans are gonna flip their lid if he's bald. You'll see. And Chekov looks like Dr Bashir from DS9.
  • ---,-JEEeERRY --B-U.-T-L-E-R
The phantom menace 2? This won't even have the benefit of Lucas' immense resources and money. This is going to be more like starship troopers 3.
  • evanz
    @790

Sorry man, I didn't realize I was crapping on the holy Star Trek throne. Pegg and Cho are funny, but in a straigh man kind of way - I'm not expecting this to be a gut buster, but Star Trek always had comic relief...from Tribbles to boomboxes to Data.
  • 790
Lol, well I don't feel crapped on, but Scotty is prob the 4th most important player on the Star Trek team.
Pegg is perfect for the part but I thought for sure they would use a different look (hairpiece) on him.
    This really looks bad.
  • Liz
No real interest in the franchise, but this movie actually looks cool and I want to see it. I have no particular problems with any casting or whatever because none of it is sacred to me, so I'm just looking forward to the fun.
  • SaraLynne
Okay, when I first saw the poster of Simon Pegg, I thought..."How the hell did they get Sam Neill to do The Hunt for Red October 2?"

    Oh.
  • cib3k
I consider myself a moderate Star Trek fan, I don't like the fact that they're "reimagining" it, but I'm still curious. The best thing about this project is JJ Abrams' involvement, which means this will turn out *at least* a decent movie. And I'm simply curious about the end result.

I have no problem with Star Trek fans complaining about it - I understand them. But some of the haters seem very out of touch with this project, who's doing it, and who exactly is in it. This will be nothing like Phantom Menace, Starship Troopers 3 and so on. This has a talented crew behind it, who worked on Alias, Lost and MI:3. It's not a direct-to-dvd movie and it's not directed by a guy who despite of his immense resources and money has no clue about working with actors (Lucas).

    @ Jeeeeeeeeerrrryyy Butler:

The "turd teen actor from like gossip girls" you're referring to is Karl Urban. He was in Lord of the Rings, Bourne Supremacy, Chronicles of Riddick and Doom. He's far from what you're saying. The other actors are all quite solid. But I guess some people just look at the posters and then start complaining without at least bothering to check who they're actually complaining about.

Also, everyone mentioning how Star Trek wasn't that great should watch Deep Space Nine - from the beginning. It was arguably the most mature of the Star Trek series. Star Trek is an immense universe and if you've only seen random episodes from TOS or Next Generation I don't think you actually have a well-formed opinion about the subject.
  • Scotty's Hair
    Where's me hair ???
  • Thandral
I think They are trying to make Scotty and Checkov more ethnic looking. In the origional Scotty didn't look all that Scottish and Checkov didn't look even remotely russian. Here they do.
  • -JEE-R;;,RRYB----UT-Le_R
Ghost of Bones: "I'm a Doctor not a teen heartthrob, Jim!"
  • Is Simon Pegg wearing prosthetics coz that looks nothing like him!?
  • Mikey M
Its still going to be a tough sell to people who think of Trek as nerdy and of no interest to them.
The marketing better be better than these posters if they are going to bring new people into the theater.
  • prizim
harold and kumar go to space!
  • Gidddyup76
Well as long as they don't change the cheesy fx and costuming and sets and dialogue and fight coordination...

Yeah, of course there are going to be some changes. Jeeze I HOPE there are gonna be changes. Don't get me wrong, I really like the show but this isn't about rehashing, it's about remaking

And seriously, are kidding me? You're complaning about friggin hair?

'I dunno...can he ACT like a guy who has hair?'
  • Adam B
Of course I care about this movie and I am really looking forward to seeing it.
  • Classic Karl Urban 'Julius Caesar' facial expression, I love it.

I kind of pity all the new 'epic' big blockbuster films coming out now, because they're still being overshadowed by the bat.
  • Eomer as Mccoy! Nice.

"What business does a Vulcan, a Romulan and a human have in the Ridder-Mark?" :)
  • Charles
I became an instant Karl Urban fan after seeing him in Riddick. He's going to be huge in a few years.
  • Obono
I really don't think simon pegg was a good choice for scotty. Being scottish myself i was hoping for James Mcavoy. At least then he can use his own accent! (ish, as scotty was an aberdonian and Mcavoy isn't) :)
  • Thelastholdout
Okay, folks, let's get some things straight here.

    1) Star Trek is HUGE. And for those of you who dismiss it as boring, I'm wondering if all you've ever seen was The Next Generation and/or the very first Star Trek movie. Star Trek was from the "Twilight Zone" era of sci fi; it was mostly a vehicle to deliver commentary on current society without having the network try to screw it over so it didn't say anything offensive. It also featured the first interracial kiss on television, though that was one thing that the censors didn't budge on and it was sorta/kinda hidden by the camera angle.

    2) Who GIVES a flying f**k whether or not the characters from today EXACTLY match the original interpretations of the characters? Face it, Nimoy and Shatner were wooden actors, and those were the only good roles they ever really played. (One exception: Shatner in Twilight Zone was pretty good.) For your information, Chekov is being played by one of the best young actors in Hollywood today. To say that no one new can look or act different from the old characters is like saying that Heath sucked because he wasn't Jack Nicholson.

    3) Whoever said that this is going to be Phantom Menace 2 is dead wrong. If it sucks, it'll be like any failed attempt to revive a franchise. If it's good, it's going to be Batman Begins 2. My money is on the latter.

In conclusion, don't pass this movie off just because you're not a Trekkie. Pay attention, maybe read some reviews when it comes out and maybe- just maybe- go see the film for yourself. You might be pleasantly surprised.
  • Francis Carmody
I've seen a lot of complaining about this movie.

    1) This film DOES NOT even need to take place in the "same universe" as TOS in order to be strictly "canonical." That precedent was firmly settled by the "bouncing Worf(s)" episode in TNG. Not to mention the very existence of Q or the "Temporal Cold War" established by ST: Enterprise

    2) Regenerating HAIR is not nearly so difficult a problem as designing a pill that can grow a kidney, so the "bald Scotty" question is just flat out whining.

    3) After enjoying and debating this same story arc for *40 years*, you want to alienate a brand new fan base? Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations is meant to be an optimistic axiom. Remakes happen all the time in this industry...some favorable, some not. The fact that this project is being pursued largely with the blessing of the original cast members, by an experienced screenwriter/producer/novelist who has equally good ties to the Pocket Books line, tells me that there is no one better qualified to handle this material.

I've been enjoying the "real" Star Trek at least since I was knee high to David Carradine...and I intend to enjoy this one with fresh eyes as well
