New Religulous Video Clip

MSN has a new clip from Larry Charles’ Religulous, Bill Maher’s comic journey to understand organized religion. In the new clip, Maher argues with a Senator about the scientific stance on evolution.

  • It seems like this movie is just going to be about him bashing other peoples religions, thinking it makes him look smart.
  • Vobe
haha! i love the look on the guys face when he realises what he's just said.
  • Bill Maher used to be mildly funny. Over the years, he has become a mean and bitter person.
  • MrSawyer
I can't wait for this movie. And no Tatsui, he's not doing this to make himself look smart. He's doing this so people realize how ridiculous religion is. Any intelligent person would have to admit evolution didn't begin with Adam & Eve with a talking snake. Then again, like the senator said "You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the senate."
  • Zach
This documentary is going to be awesome, even if it is more of a polemic than a dissection. The problem is that the people who need to see this movie - namely those who are still deeply under the influence of religion - are never going to want to see it. Even Maher himself refers to his comedy routines as "masturbation".

"It seems like this movie is just going to be about him bashing other peoples religions, thinking it makes him look smart."

Well It does make him look smart doesn't it. Although Im not sure that's so difficult when he's talking to people who believe in talking snakes.
  • Captain Awesome
    Still waiting for cable.
  • @ MrSawyer
I'm not religious, but I do believe some people need religion. It's like a cushion for people to lean on, if they're in tough times. But, it does seem like he is only going to show his views.
  • MrSawyer
I hear ya Tatsui. But I really think that this is a personal issue fro Bill himself. I mean it's in his comedy act all the time. To him there is no middle ground. You either do or don't believe it in it. If he showed it any other way it would contradict what he's trying to do. The whole religion giving comfort aspect I think is a whole other topic.

I cannot fathom why it has taken 100s of years (1,000s? I dunno, I'm just a blogger), to realize that millions of adults believe that Superman is real. Thank somebody for YouTube and accountability.

People laugh at 30 year olds who believe in Santa (which would make a great reality show) but people who believe that all "good humans" will suddenly be sucked up into the heavens before the Anti-Christ arrives are taken seriously, even by our government?

This is why people do drugs (except for Seth Rogen, who gets rich).

    @hunter
"I cannot fathom why it has taken 100s of years (1,000s? I dunno, I’m just a blogger), to realize that millions of adults believe that Superman is real. Thank somebody for YouTube and accountability."

i havnt got a clue what you are talking about, superman isnt even 100 years old, so i dont know how any of that makes sense. haha
  • Jason Miller
I'd like to see the un-edited version of that interview. I'd put $10 down that says Maher laughed when the Senator told the joke.
  • Stevo
This is a movie I really can't wait to see. It's so fantastic.

I don't mind Maher's "mean" approach, we have to start taking action. People don't HAVE to be idiots. And if you think convincing yourself it's okay to believe in something with no evidence whatsoever and to allow that to influence decisions that affect other people isn't wrong, you're an idiot too. Let beliefs be beliefs, and may they rule the world of your mind, they should affect nothing in the world of fact. But as they like to say, "people can be saved." Maher's doing the right thing.

The USA needs to add one more target to the "war on drugs" - religion.
  • egyptnation
"You don't need to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate." Zing!
  • Raerth
This look over-edited, in a very bad way.

I'm not religious myself and probably agree with most of the sentiments of the film, but this style of filming does no one any favors.
  • Shawn
Why is it so idiotic to have a different opinion on life and where we came from. Believing in God is no more crazy than believing there was a huge explosion and it all just came together to be so perfect and intricate to where we are today. I am not saying either was is right or wrong, what I am saying is that it is extremely hypocritical to say one is totally stupid and lacking any basic thought while the other is the answer to our existence.

I think we will someday find that both sides are wrong and it's something totally different, but until I know that for a fact I am going to live my life and let everyone else live theres without trying to shit on what they believe.
  • @Shawn
It's idiotic because we have no proof whatsoever of any raligion, god, belief or talking snake. Nor any of that can explain the universe we see and experience.

Science, on the other hand, can explain the things that we see, can predict events on the future based on certain rules, laws and theories and ultimately: science is our best attempt at the truth.

Certainly believing in god doesn't make you an idiot per se, but elevating religion to the level of sciente does.
  • And Shawn, there's nothing "perfect" on the universe we see. Complicated? Sure thing. But perfect? That's when you start sliding into the Intelligent Design cults.
  • Robert Gills
That edit was so fake. Maher makes his smile go down and they cut to the other guy doing the same. 10 bucks says that was totally taken out of the order in which it happened.

But what do I know, I'm no senator.
  • mike
"Believing in God is no more crazy than believing there was a huge explosion and it all just came together to be so perfect and intricate to where we are today."

The problem with that statement is how fundamentally it misunderstands our place in the the universe. We are one tiny planet in a galaxy of over 200 billion stars, which is one of over 100 billion galaxies.

What's really more reasonable? That, within this vastness, and over a period of billions of years, life managed, in at least one place, to arise and evolve. . . . or that a magic man made an inconceivable vastness of planets and stars and galaxies, then picked the equivalent of a single grain of sand in the sahara, and sat around for 13 billion years before making some people to talk to him?
  • Lion-o
Why are atheists, always "dull" and unenthusiastic. Bill Maher, Chris Hitchens,George Carlin, Patton Oswald , Marilyn Manson are all assholes and "dullards" who challenge everything, the goverment, God, other ppl. They could use a lil' religion...............or a charisma implant
  • Where do they find you ppl!
God is a entity, he's that emtion you feel when your laughin , or you eat a good meal or drink a cold of water when your exhausted that "ahhhh" feeling" . Atheists will never feel that kind of joy. God is a "feeling" a "spirit" that you have to be "spiritual" to feel ( which atheists don't seem to grasp because they are to busy disrespecting it.) They make him out to be some old white man w/ a bushy beard . You don't see AIR but how do you know it's there?....because you FEEL it. Don't knock it until unless you know why it's inspired so many of the greatest ppl ( and vaillainous , true) but GREATEST painters, MUSICIANS, SCULPTORS, MATYRS, PHILOSOPHERS, BUILDINGS , MONUMENTS of all-time
  • Captain Awesome
    Lion-o,

Eat shit for even putting Carlin in the same sentence as Maher and Manson.

    You god damned furry.
  • TESTEMENT
True "where^" , that's what atheists don't seem to GET.
  • BA
You may think Christianity provides a laughable testimony to the origins of mankind. You may not proclaim that naturalistic science has a better solution. The two most cogent answers provided by the latter group (with a straight face) are abiogenesis and aliens - both of which are supported by no evidence and require an incredible amount of faith. "Religion is stupid and naturalistic science is getting better. One day, it will give us the answers..." I see, trusting in the naturally unseen and untestable, ah, more faith.
  • Normal Person
God is a concept for the "developly mental disabled"

You can not handle reality. Your brains do not understand the concept. You are what we call "mentally challenged." I'm sorry if that upsets you... but its true. Don't start slapping the side of your heads ... Charlie Babbet is NOT making a joke.. this is serious.
In layman's terms.. You are all fucking retarded.
The sooner you realize this ... the better.
I for one am not going to tolerate your fantasy world any longer.
  • The Dude
    Hunter is God.
  • Kode
You know.. I pretty much sure that I am God
  • Jelohac
    Thank god for Bill Maher.
  • Kip
I am an atheist and I could care less what anyone else thinks or believes, as long as they don't care what I think or believe. If they want to make an issue out of it, then we can debate and they can look stupid. People like to group us atheist into one big group, but were just as distinct as Christians are. Some of us keep to ourselves and let it slide when our puma's get stepped on, and then theres Bill Maher. In a way I respect that he's out there standing up for us and going after those that would inflict us with their believes (prayer in school, state religion, ten commandments in the DQ.) I think the message is effective both ways, but sometimes it doesn't hurt that the big boot of mean is accompanying the message
  • I really don't understand why some Christians in the US find so hard to believe in evolution and to realize that Adam and Eve are just a metaphore to explain the creation to a bunch of people that did not have the cientific background we have today.

I live in Chile, I'm a Catholic and I can't possibly imagine a Christian politician in my country saying that he denies evolution... that's like denying gravity!
  • Greyson
Does anyone else think that Bill Maher looks like Alan Rickman from Galaxy Quest?
  • Dan
comparing evolution to gravity??? One: You can prove gravity, go drop a rock. Two, unless you have a time machine or written record (and we don't have either) you can't prove evolution. And last, the Evolutionary theory changes pretty much on a daily bases . . .hence the word theory.
  • Liz
Dan - gravity is a theory that best explains the behavior of many things, including a rock when you drop it. Dropping a rock does not "prove" anything. Gravity is a theory, much like evolution, and if you don't understand the concept of a scientific theory you should probably look it up. It's not the same thing as the pedestrian definition of a "theory."
  • Captain Awesome
    Thank God for Cthulhu!
  • Rob
It's disturbing when people put their dogmatic word-of-mouth belief before any rational theory based on scientific evidence. *Shudder*

Still, I would imagine the vast majority of Christians worldwide are better educated & more "of the world" than the fundamentalist minority, who prefer a literal interpretation of a text which has been written retrospectively, revised, recompiled and edited over hundreds of years.
  • Max
The look on the guy's face after he said the thing about the IQ test:

    :) -> Wait, what?
  • Rocha
Imagine this....if some of you actually took to heart other people's beliefs and held them as high in regard as your own.

Also....that doesn't mean you have to compromise your beliefs.

Religion = the word comes from the prefix re(to return, do again, come back to) and the roots legione/ligare(connect, be a part of something bigger, group).

Essentially religion is the way back to finding who you are, coming back to your center, living you essence (or the attempt).

Even atheism is a religion people.

Religion has absolutely nothing to do with God.

Live and let live if at all possible.

Like the great prophet Bob Marley said,

"So much trouble in the world

    Bless my eyes this morning
Jah sun is on the rise once again
The way earthly thin's are goin'
    Anything can happen.

You see men sailing on their ego trip,
    Blast off on their spaceship,
    Million miles from reality:
No care for you, no care for me.

    So much trouble in the world;
So much trouble in the world.
All you got to do: give a little (give a little),
Give a little (give a little), give a little (give a little)!
One more time, ye-ah! (give a little) Ye-ah! (give a little)
    Ye-ah! (give a little) Yeah!

So you think you've found the solution,
    But it's just another illusion!
(So before you check out this tide),
    Don't leave another cornerstone
    Standing there behind, eh-eh-eh-eh!
    We've got to face the day;
    (Ooh) Ooh-wee, come what may:
    We the street people talkin',
    Yeah, we the people strugglin'.

Now they sitting on a time bomb; (Bomb-bomb-bomb! Bomb-bomb-bomb!)
Now I know the time has come: (Bomb-bomb-bomb! Bomb-bomb-bomb!)
What goes on up is coming on down, (Bomb-bomb-bomb! Bomb-bomb-bomb!)
Goes around and comes around. (Bomb-bomb-bomb! Bomb-bomb-bomb!)

So much trouble in the world"

    ONE LOVE
  • Bob
    @Rocha
I hope you're holding anti racial and homophobic beliefs just as high as your own, well unless you hold your own beliefs pretty low as is.
Also go to an evangelical church and tell them that religion has absolutely nothing to do with god, hope you only get called a heretic.
And atheism is not a religion, it's a disbelief in god or gods, because I bet that your favorite hobby is NOT to collect stamps.
  • charlie
To that person who calls itself captainawesome:

    Deuteronomy 5:11
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

    Psalms 139:20
For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

    Doctrine and Covenants 63:61-62
Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—
For behold, verily I say, that many there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.
  • wchn
    I'm not a believer but:
the talking snake? It wasn't a snake before God told the thing it was a snake. It was an undefined thing.
  • OMG, you know what I come to this site for?

A debate about creation vs. evolution in the comments section!

    Awesome! You guys rock!

Keep standing up for the forces of God and science in the comment section of a blog website! The future is counting on YOU!
  • igroveman
so... a snake could never be inhabited by a spirit and talk, but the human (or animal) eye could invent itself by spontaneously grasping and then becoming reactive to light in a way that sends electric signals to brain mass that produces sight.

The book of Romans says, "professing to be wise, they became fools and worshiped the creature rather than the Creator."

    Quite simple, really.
  • Captain Awesome
/film - Bringing out the nuts from both sides.

Seriously people, this is just another Maher production. It doesn't deserve this kind of attention. You think that's bad, wait until I fuck all your mothers corpses.
  • HectorN
What are atheists trying to convince people not to believe in God?? why don't they just live their lives and realize people is free to believe in everything they want.
  • cLIFF
You know if you think about those who belive in evolution have to belive in some things they cant prove and questions they cant answer such as if we are decends of apes and evolution is survival of the fittest than why is that apes are still around. The very fact that they are looking for the missing link mean they have faith that it is out ther even though thet cant prove it exists
  • Captain Awesome
I find it funnier and funnier that Aethiests seem to be wrangling themselves into an actual "group" with a belief system, tellings others what not to buy into. But I've been noticing this more and more with the Aetheist crowd. Isn't that exactly what they were originally against?

Not that I'm Christian or of any religious background. I mean I've seen Aetheist clubs formed to protest other organized religions.

I just find that really hilarious...
  • 7th Son
Athiests are very nosey people. This guy in particular needs to get a f*%king life.
  • 7th Son
You don't have to pass an IQ test to believe in evolution or be an athiest either.
  • A.J.
Ha! Thats priceless when the senator drops his face and it looks like he's saying "uh.....i didn't mean to say that'. awesome.
