A Pineapple Express / Superbad Crossover Movie?

At Comic Con, Judd Apatow joked about a possible Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover movie, where the paths of all the characters would cross. Everyone thought it was just a joke. Besides, Seth Rogen has expressed his disinterest in doing another Superbad, even though the movie studio has been clamoring for a college tale.

This week our friends at MTV talked with Pineapple Express star James Franco, who told them it’s a real idea. But it gets even weirder. According to Franco, part of the idea for the “unprecedented crossover” is that it could be filmed by two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie. Even Franco admits that it “doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.” I’m not sure the Directors Guild of America would allow it.

The idea of the crossover became hot in Hollywood when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man and Tony Stark made an appearance in The Incredible Hulk. But truth is, Kevin Smith created the ultimate crossover movie years ago with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which included the characters from every Kevin Smith film at that time. And since Smith, like Apatow, uses the same crew on many films, some of the actors appeared as a couple different characters. For instance, Jason Lee appeared as both Brodie Bruce from Mallrats and Banky Edwards from Chasing Amy.

And with a Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover, thee would be a huge conflict as Seth Rogen appears in both films in major roles. Franco’s idea is to kill one of the characters off, soyou don’t have to deal with it. I think the funnier thing would to be having Seth Rogen, as the cop from Superbad, chasing Seth Rogen as the stoner from Pineapple, down the street. LOL. Yeah, I doubt this will ever happen. I think I’d actually rather see Seth, Evan and Fogell go to college.

Discuss: Would you rather see a Crossover movie or a Superbad sequel?

  • Joe
    This sounds ludicrously awesome.

Dale kills off Rogan's cop (by accident) in a prolonged, dragged-out death scene.
  • I'd rather see a Superbad sequel, at least then there wouldn't be major character problems.
  • Christopher Edwards
I wouldn't like to see either turned into sequel(even though I haven't seen Pineapple Express yet).

But Superbad would be good with a college theme but would just be made for the sake of being made for the studios.

Hopefully the $$$ don't tempt them to much
  • Goose
    This sounds ludicrously stupid.
    Stoner comedies are garbage.
    Seth Rogen is not funny.
Neither is Will ferrell or his retard "comedy" movies.
The fat kid from superbad is just a younger seth rogen. he is not funny.
  • John
sounds like a hater to me. would you rather have another movie like american pie where it's just "awkward moments" that would never realistically happen? grow up.
  • bundas
...aren't Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen the same age?
  • If Rogan's cop is to be killed, it MUST be by Daewoo Lanos!!!
  • I'd watch it. As much as everyone proclaims their fatigue of the Apatow/Rogen machine, I think everything they do is virtual gold and will line up to laugh my ass off.
  • steveperry
id agree with that man. i can't c y people don't think it would work i am yet to see something they have done be shit
  • maverick
    then you are brainless sixfeeunderthegun
  • Uhh, maybe it could work as a straight to DVD release for fanboys, but cinematically it would probably fail.
  • DerekAllan
both movies take place in Clark County. Check the license plates. it could happen!
  • erik
Enrique is correct. Goose and Maverick are not.
  • Windmillninja
Well at least it would officially make it clear that Apatow has nothing else to offer us.
  • maverick
    erik is also brainless
  • I think the idea is funny enough. I could easily see Seth, Evan and Fogel buying their first bag of weed from Saul (franco). I don't see how Dale would fit in, but perhaps that gives room for Rogen to reprise his cop role.
  • orange cinema
superbad sequel all the way, and no killing of any of these characters.
  • UnKaL
@ Goose I'm not sure you understood the question nor did you even answer it. They didn't ask whats your opinion on these movies or actors.

Overall the movie would be a great idea but at the same time like Franco said the fact of being directed half by Mottola and the other half by Green would be a little iffy but the concept seems really interesting. Hopefully they take their time on it and don't rush then maybe we can get a great hit off of it.
  • nick
I'll take it, anything they come up with would be hilarious, and much better than some Will Ferrell comedy.
  • Goose
    @ unkal

    shut up
  • J.D.
Make Cop Rogan the twin brother of Stoner Rogan.

I'm not a big fan of the movies, but it would be huge and profitable.

Then all three could be sold in a pack.
  • Ben C.
Speaking of Pineapple Express was anyone conflicted about that movie? I felt like so much of it made me laugh (the diner scene at the end was my favorite) but i really felt like the action side of the movie was a negative (which surprised me). What did you guys think?
  • aaron
Isn't every movie with jay and silent bob a crossover? Haven't those characters been in EVERY kevin smith movie, or at least close to it?
  • gah
A straight up Pineapple sequel would be better. Superbad wears on me with each viewing, making me like it less and less however I think Pineapples will have a better rewatchability.
  • Vin
No, this could actually work. Rogen's character in Superbad could be a later version of Rogen's character in Pineapple Express. I've yet to see Pineapple, so I have no idea of what the ending is, but it could lead to Dale becoming a cop. He was a process server, and maybe all the action he lived through in Pineapple gave him the urge to take up law enforcement, thus he is now a cop.

Saul could end up being Foggle's pot dealer (this being Foggle's first time buying pot, leading to a hilarious homage to Foggle's liqour store mishap) in college.

    Piece it together from there.
  • Roberto
FUCK! Write something NEW for chrissakes! Cannibalizing yourselves already?! How lazy are these people?
  • dude
    Superbad sequel!
  • kgp968
I think the cross over would be sweet but don't put too much attention on rogen because he's a little overrated - I'm sure franco would do just as awesome in a crossover as he did in pineapple express - an awesome addition to a college sequel of superbad
  • richard branson
neither. more original comedy as per usual is what i want from apatow.
  • JackBauer02
On the surface, a Superbad sequel sounds terrible - BUT, I really do think it could work. My idea would be Seth going to visit Evan and Fogel at thier school, and having it somewhat test the friendship between him and Evan - because he would obviously have new friends and would not have hung around him everyday like they did in High School. I think if the movie showed what it's really like drifing apart from longtime friends as you grow older, it would work - since the first movie somewhat hinted at it.
  • Mike
Superbad Sequel, without question. A crossover would be foolish, and a terrible idea. Although, I'm sure idiots everywhere would pay to see it.
  • Alan Geiss
how about a pineapple express sequel?
  • Travis Mcgee
Why don't you just have James Franco's character as the dealer for the Superbad kids when they are in college...
  • Ricky
i'd be interested but superbad 2 would be better.
  • Samantha Pruitt
i rather just see new movies from them!

this coming from a person who loved both these movies.
  • Joe
If either had to be a reality, I'd vote for a Superbad sequel, possibly incorporating James Franco as the dealer as some have mentioned.

But really, wouldn't a Superbad sequel with them in college kind of step on the feet of Accepted, which also had Jonah Hill as a college student?
  • jeff
oh my god, jonah hill played a college student already in a movie? well, jeez, i guess that means he can never play one again. we wouldn't want to confuse all the fans who see it and say "waitttt a minute, what movie am i in? i paid to see superbad 2, but this just looks like accepted!!! look! it's got that fat guy and he's in college, so it has to be same movie!"

    really, joe, really?

it's called type casting, get used to it.
  • dave
id rather they sat down and wrote something as good as superbad again, i thought it was great along with knocked up, but sarah marshall drillbit taylor and all the apatow flicks have been crap imo.
  • Joe
    @jeff

And you're what many would call an asshole. But please, continue to defend the virtues of type-casting and a lack of originality in Hollywood. That really makes you the bigger man.
  • joel osterman
    superbad sequel w/o a doubt
  • first half of Pineapple Express was about half as good as Knocked Up; the second half was almost as bad as Freddy God Fingered
  • Rose
    Crossover!!
Perhaps I'm biased because I'm hopelessly in love with James Franco, but that sounds hilarious. Again, I love anything with Seth Rogen in it or Apatow produced, but a whole lotta people love Seth Rogen. He's so charming and funny! Maybe what would be better still is just a new Apatow/Rogen/Franco movie? Oh, and Michael Cera.
  • why would there be "character issues" boys and girls, it would be perfect, seth rogan has fought himself in a movie b4, (FANBOYS, 2009-MUST SEE, VERY FUNNY) so if he has the brains to play two characters, WHICH HE DOES, he is the master...LET THERE BE SUPERBAD/PINEAPPLE EXPRESS crossover!!
