Religulous Movie Poster (For Canada, Of Course)

Ding, ding.

Discuss: What do you think of the poster? Why didn’t Lionsgate use a poster like this in the U.S.? Also, anyone notice that grandparents really love Space Chimps?

    OMG HOW OFFENSIVE AND CONTROVERSIAL
  • sam
it's offensive... And i love it.
  • They wouldn't release the poster in the US because the majority of Americans are "GOD fearing Christians". You guys have bible belt after bible belt where as we, we have hockey, beet and maple syrup. :) (eh).

I can't wait for this movie!
  • BxA
I wanna see this so bad but it probably won't even come out in my theaters. or if it does it will be out for like a week.
  • 790
Offensive Yes, because its supposed to be a comedy,,,, this poster dosnt offend me at all.

Bill Maher, is the biggest hack in comedy. The guy jerks off before every show, and he's not funny. (How do I know he jerks off before every show, I just do)

This film (IMO) is a pile of shit.
I would rather watch Dogma over and over,,,,,,
  • Jmoney
up here in Canada we have god-fearing christians as well, and a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that protects all religious freedoms, but it also protects the right to release posters like this. I'm sure there will be people upset by the poster but in Canada we don't let the vocal wackjobs to dictate how our society operates, unlike down there, cough cough wardrobe malfunction cough cough
  • zorburt
uh i actually have no idea why this is offensive. maybe it's because i'm canadian, or maybe it's because i was raised in a buddhist household and not a western religion one but is it because they're monkeys dressed up in religious garb?

why do people hate monkeys so much?
  • MonkeyMafia
Never before has a film poster complimented my message board name so perfectly... elation....
  • BA
I love movies like this. Afterward, much like the
Davinci Code, people feel "equipped" to attack
Christianity (I am of course, a Christian). They think
they win a couple battles with a few uneducated Sunday
-to-Sunday Church goers. But eventually, as their
confidence grows, they run into someone who
daily follows Christ. In my personal experience, and
I've had more than a few encounters, after they quickly
find their puffed up, half-thought assumptions, out-of
-context biblical quotes and well-worn accusations dismantled
on the ground, they realize that there are sound, logical
answers - and that we haven't been the ones misleading them after all.

After you watch the movie, ask yourself, why didn't Bill
Maher film himself talking to someone like Josh
McDowell, Hank Hanegraaff, Ravi Zacharias, Lee
Strobel, Ralph Muncaster, Timothy Paul Jones, James
White, or any other of the thousands of readily
available Christian apologists? (No one has seen the movie,
but I can guarantee you won't find Maher interviewing those
    guys).

Why? Because his arguments would be logically dismantled
and his funny accusations would be met with real,
    honest answers.
  • Capt. Obvious
If any sort of Theism could be proved logically there would be no Atheists. You're just deluding yourself and using half truths and full lies. I've never seen anyone stand up to an Atheist in an argument over religion, not without reverting back to how their blind faith makes everything okay. The reason he didn't pick those heavy debaters is

1.) The movie is a comedy, not a serious documentary. The only point he really makes is he own opinion at the end.

2.) What does it matter what the seasoned apologists believe? Should we not see what the average person believes?
  • I like how the poster is Equal Offenders Opportunity. As long as all groups are targeted equally, then I don't find it offensive.
  • I think monkeys are the ones who should be offended. As one who supports the Monkey Religious Right, I can tell you that that these posters should be banned.
  • BA, there is no logic in the belief in god, especially Abrahamic religions.

Bil Maher will show that in this film.

He doesn't need to interview any of your Saints or hack writers to do so.

Pure logic and scientific fact is all we need to eliminate fairy tales and angry sky gods from our lives.

I used to have complete faith in jebus of nazereth. he was my lord and saviour for my whole life. i used to get down on my knees and praise him every nite... id let his christ love flow over me and I could feel it all over my face... but after seeing this poster... it's made me question my love of Him. I mean, it's monkeys! ahhh I'm so torn! You know what this poster is right! Fuck jebus!!
  • Nathan
That poster is hilarious. Too bad the US can't take a joke.
  • Quenfis
This is going to be controversial, no doubt. Bill is a pompous ass. But, I tend to agree with him a bit too much. Can't help it I guess.

And, I need advice on how to shut my dad up about talking Space Chimps with my Son!!
  • 790
    @Zorburt
I think one reason it could be considered offensive because of the Evolution vs Creationism argument.
    (Man came from apes).

    @Ugh_doom
You should read some books on near death experiences. You'll find that there is something after this life, and everyones invited , you don't need to belong to a church or a religion.
  • alrightybreh
Why would you read a book about 'near' death experiences to find out what is going on post-death?
  • Jmoney
ugh_doom: there is most definitely logic in the belief of a higher power, logical arguments for God's existence are as old or older than the major religions, it's called metaphysics and it has nothing to do with Christianity. Do a little research before you make a sweeping statement like that. try starting with the Cosmological Argument maybe, or just pick up a metaphysics book.

I enjoyed Politically Incorrect but I don't agree with Maher's views on this subject. In this case panders to the lowest common dominator. It's easy to argue that God doesn't exist when you focus on Christian doctrine and stiff like walking on water, but I his simplistict views don't hold up when faced with the real questions about existence.
  • Jmoney
slashfilm, you need an edit option for the comments
  • 790
    Alrightybreh,,,,
Near Death Experience or (NDE) is the term for when a person dies and then is brought back from the dead, via Paramedic, life saving surgery etc.
Alot of ppl describe the same experience , white light, sometimes a full life review.

    Its real fun stuff, (lol)
There are alot of books on the subject, and also online.
  • Justin
i've not seen the film, and i haven't decided if i will watch it yet. but i love this poster! there is a lot of truth to it.

it's sad to me, as a christian, that we are more known for proclaiming the "end" instead of the "truth". but i'm glad for this movie. it is sure to start a lot of discussion indeed.
  • yh
I love the poster, but then again I'm a bit biased on the subject. I would love to hear some of these so called arguments for religion, cuz I can tell you, nothing about religion makes logical sense to me. What would drive people to follow something they can't see, can't touch, can't communicate with (beside through someone else.. .of course) and can't be reasoned with? There's plenty to study, explore, debate, and argue about on earth that doesn't require putting faith into some hokey idea of a supreme being. Looking forward to seeing this film, though I think it'll be doing a lot of preaching to the choir (pardon the expression).
  • Jmoney
yh, explain why it is hokey.

all i ever see are people saying its ridiculous but they never lay out their argument.

forgetting all the religion stuff, and just focus on the singular idea of a supreme being, and i'd like you to logically explain why it's a hokey idea
  • Kurt
    LOL at religion
  • clivestaples
Religion is hokey because it is a bad, outdated version of what used to pass as science. All arguments for religion come down to either a) poorly informed pseudoscience or b) reliance on faith. These are not good reasons around which to form beliefs about our world.

And near-death experiences? Please. They are all the same because we are all the same species, and our brains are similar. It is the brain trying to survive in a highly stressed situation. Everyone is nervous about death, and no one will live beyond it. Once we realize this fact, we will grow a lot as a society.

The only disappointment about this movie is that we will hear no new arguments from the religious types. The atheists wait with open ears...
  • 790
Clivestaples, I agree that religion is a form of control that alot of ppl "need" to cope with reality. You should respect that.

However that dosnt mean there isn't some kind of energy source that our soul energy goes to when the container, that is our body is damaged. Not all NDE's are the same actually there all very unique to the persons awareness of having a soul. Atheists when the die don't even think their dead (like 6th Sense) because death is just like being alive, especally if their killed very fast. Others fear the light, and a supposed judgement by God so they hang around as ghosts.

I don't have all the answers but humanity is a very fragle eco-system one that if you do the math is impossible without some divine plan going on.

Personally I believe we all choose to come her to learn whats its like to be human.
We are all very powerfull spirit beings on the other side and we send a part of ourselves to earth in a Physical body to learn. (All the while we are not allowed to know this)

But you know what clive,,,,, I could deal with Oblivion if that's the case, (some days I welcome it) but deep down I know that death is only the debriefing/reset after this experience. My only hope is that I go real quick !!!!! :-)

Enjoy this timeline it will only come around 1 time.
  • Jmoney
clivestaples, that is a great argument against organized religion, but the above poster said supreme being, that is something completely different. and i've yet to see a rational argument for why there can't be something beyond this life.

just focus on this one simple question, where is the universe? or what is universe?
  • Chris
I love this poster! LOL. Well done. I look forward to seeing this documentary. I am sure it will be funny and thought provoking. I am agnostic. But I am surely anti-religious fundamentalism. This childlike view of the universe is dangerous to this world.

Oh ya, and I think people need to open their minds and learn how to laugh again. Is there a correlation between religious belief and having no sense of humour? I tend to think so.
Sad, considering how short life is afterall...
  • Louis
Just think for a minute what a reaction and following punishments such a picture(or painting then) would have produced in the middle ages, in the times of inquisition; well it is a good thing that society evoluated....
Evolution, body and mind, only spirit seems to drag his feet LOL
  • Shaolin_sKunk
790 I am atheist, but I agree that there is no way to know if god exists or not I acknowledge that I can't know.

But when you die, that's it, if what we call a soul exists it is only a byproduct of the workings of the mind. Honestly, death IS the end for all intents and purposes, if what we call the soul exists and leaves this earthly vessel when we die do you really think it would have the capacity to "know?"

Also, there is no divine plan to this eco-system, people always say it is fragile and delicate and requires specific rules in order to survive but the fact of the matter is that it's quite the opposite, it's without direction except when given one by sapient species (i.e. us) It doesn't move forward by the barking orders of a man from the sky, no, it moves forward by a desire to improve and flourish. It is only from ourselves that this feeling arises, we want what's best for ourselves and our children, we don't need a divine plan in order to do that.
  • William Blake
    THE VOICE OF THE DEVIL

All Bibles or sacred codes, have been the causes of the following Errors.

    1. That Man has two real existing principles Viz: a Body & a Soul.
    2. That Energy, called Evil, is alone from the Body, & that Reason, called Good, is alone from the Soul.
    3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies.

But the following Contraries to these are True.

    1. Man has no Body distinct from his Soul; for that called Body is a portion of Soul discerned by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age.
    2. Energy is the only life and is from the Body and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy.
    3. Energy is Eternal Delight.
-Marriage of Heaven and Hell (W. Blake)

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he exists.

The term "Supreme Being" is just a euphemism for God. Those who "need" religion to cope with (mask) reality, but cannot close their eyes enough to see YWHW. But ignorance rly is bliss. So forget all I said here. Go back to sleep.

bill maher is not an atheist.
    google that shit.
  • 790
    Welll Shaolin._sKunk,,,,
The only thing that dies is the human body.
The soul, is captured by who, I have only a few ideas.......
Read some books on NDE's. and see the Perfection....

My warning to all atheists is, have an open mind, when you die.................................

    The soul doesn't exist. GG

Did no-one pick up on the reference to the three wise monkeys who see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil? For me, that was the funniest thing about the poster.

The Jewish monkey sees no evil - when the Jewish god is on record for slaughtering milliions for simply being "not Jewish" or for some really petty "crime" like accidently tripping or being pushed and falling against the holy Ark.

The Catholic monkey hears no evil - heir children.

The Muslim monkey speaks no evil - when their god is credited with insisting that the adherents kill as many Americans and Westerners as possible, because the are infidel christians.

In other words, it humorously make the point that the Abrahamic religions are all immoral while pretending not to be.

    I love it.

Do I understand correctly that I can't see this movie unless I hot foot it to Canada?

When you die you eat clay and become food for worms

-The Sumerians (I think, either that or Babylonians)
  • Drew
Every voice raised against the superstition and violence of religion is one more nail in the coffin of such Bronze Aged rubbish. I look forward to paying to watch this movie.
  • Infidellab
Is there any place you can get the "Religulous" chimps poster from?
