The Dark Knight has just crossed the $400 million mark in a record setting amount of time - just 18 days of release. To give you an idea of just how big that is, let me share with you the previous record holder - Shrek 2, which crossed the same $400 mark in 43 days! It’s also worth noting that the movie is still grossing over $6 million on a Monday, which is more money than X-Files 2 took in during the film’s premiere Saturday/Sunday. [mediabynumbers]

Oh my goodness, this may sink the titanic! like an iceberg lolol
i wonder how batman 3 will do, hehe

I honestly hope it does knock ‘Titanic’ off the chart.
Stupid tween girls…

The Dark Knight is the Iceberg!

Tickets continue to sell out for the IMAX show times here in my city. The last showing if TDK was set to be on the 24th of this month. They have pushed that date back indefinitely. I hope it still has enough momentum to push over Titanic a second time.

Anyone know how long the theatre run is? I heard up until November? If so this can easily hit 500 million I think. Im still going to watch it one more time on IMAX, which I recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it on IMAX to do so. A whole different experience.

I really doubt it will take away Titanic’s spot….unless when it DOES get nominated for Best Pic at the Oscars they do a re-release.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:59 am
no way this will break titanic’s record. 500 million definitely, but its really slowing down in weekday grosses and this doesn’t have the legs that titanic had. i would love to see it break titanic’s record, but come on lets get realistic here. by the way, it will probably be on dvd during oscar season, so there is no need to re-release it.

@Bob:
Although Titanic actually made more in subsequent weekends than it did on its opening weekend (which is something The Dark Knight certainly cannot say), the weekly numbers appear to be in The Dark Knight’s favor. The Dark Knight pulled in over $6 million on its third Monday, but according to Box Office Mojo, Titanic pulled in just over $3 million on its third Monday. Like I said, Titanic’s numbers rose for a few weeks after its release and then stayed fairly steady, but The Dark Knight could fall another 50% this weekend and still make $21 million. To see the day-by-day breakdown, check here: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=titanic.htm

Amazing.
August 5th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Well at first I didn’t care but I wonder how it’ll do in 30 days.
August 5th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I can’t stand Titanic, and I would love for TDK to overtake it (I really don’t care about inflation). However, chances are slim. But w/e, it won’t affect how much I like the movie.
August 5th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Titanic was out for 9 months if TDK was out that long it wouldnt even matter.
August 5th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
In the Uk, The london Imax has just extended its run till the end of September, original cut off was 3rd september.Been trying to get decent seats for my second viewing but its sold out till first week of september. looking forward to seeing international figures too.

For the life of me, I cannot understand WHY the titanic made so much money. It sucked and it sucked and I saw it when I was 13ish so I was the prime demo–a 13yr old girl, and I still hated it.
I hope to almighty ALLAH this film assrapes Titanic.
August 5th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I gotta admit, I would laugh if TDK passed Titanic just to have Avatar beat TDK a year later, lol.
August 5th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Don’t know if it will triumph truly, but I shall hope.
Sink that bitch TDK, SINK IT!
August 5th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Yeah, the movie will atleast be in theatres for another 2 months regardless, so yeah, $480 mill is most definitely a lock. Well, we now know that worse case scenario, it’ll be the number 2 biggest grossing film of all time! Does “TDK” have enough steam to real in another $200 mill through its legs?? Because now will be the hard part. Also, “Express” and “Thunder” are both coming out on Wednesdays and are both R-rated comedies, so their opening weekends shouldn’t necessarily impact “TDK” negatively to the point where it loses its buzz too much. What do y’all think?
August 5th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
You know, as much as I want TDK to take the #1 spot, I still respect Titanic as a great and moving film.
I just don’t understand all the hate towards Titanic, it was a great movie.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I think its possible that it will make $600 mill.
August 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
@ Rufi:
I hope you’re joking, I mean Avatar being #1? really?
August 5th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Batman gotta eat!
August 5th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
just a crazy idea, but imagine if WB decided to put a hard cut off date on first run theater showings (and had an advertising campaign to coincide). I’m guessing that fans of the movie would be lining up again to see the film one more time, with a huge 2 week haul. Rerelease it again around Christmas with some additional footage after the credits. Kachiiing

A Better Class of Criminal, that’s fine if you like Titanic. But just so everyone knows, I’m not knocking Titanic because of TDK. I’ve just never thought it was a good movie (I don’t think it’s horrible, it’s watchable, but certainly not as good as what it was being hyped years ago). It’s the kind of movie that I like watching to make fun of it.
August 5th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Titanic actually started out kinda slow,, it only made about 28 million dollars its first weekend. But I guess 28 million was actually a lot considering the fact that ticket prices back then were about 5 bucks.

Schweet
August 5th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
The Joker couldn’t sink two Gotham barges, but he sure can sink that Titanic.
August 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Seen it 3 times already. Haven’t experienced it on IMAX yet. Is it worth the extra?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Funny thing about Titanic…I watched it recently and I hate to say this but here goes….it deserved ever bit of money it got. It was a great “achievement” and the movie stays w/ you after you watch it. The Dark knight is the same way.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Yeah Titanic was a great film , I mean no other historical movie had the right blend of “everything” . The film had the lovey dovey stuff for the girls, the special effects, the villain, the historical scenes underwater w/ actual footage of the wreck, it was semi-educational, ppl complain of dialogue but it wasn’t too “thinky” to where it goes over 9 year olds head, it was just the right amount of suspense to make you wonder even tho’ you know the ship was gonna sink…that it wasn’t. And you get to see how it sank which was interesting to see
August 6th, 2008 at 1:20 am
Hell, yes.
