Winged Creatures Movie Trailer

Peach Arch has released the trailer for Rowan Woods’ ensemble indie drama Winged Creatures. The film has a fantastic cast which includes Forest Whitaker, Kate Beckinsale, Jackie Earle Haley, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Hudson, Dakota Fanning, and Josh Hutcherson, but the story seems a big forced and reeks of Oscar bait. It also has a kinda low-fi Crash vibe. The story follows five traumatized people as they struggle to regain their trust in the ordinary world. The official plot synopsis follows:

“A moment of random violence erupts in an ordinary Los Angeles diner. The survivors (Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, Forest Whitaker, Josh Hutcherson) find that the meanings of their lives have changed. No matter how much their families and friends (Jennifer Hudson, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Embeth Davidtz) attempt to understand, these individuals must follow their own paths to recovery seeking to regain trust in a world that now seems chaotic.A story of tragedy and hope for our times, Winged Creatures is a powerful ensemble drama that explores the notion that our lives are fleeting, like birds in flight, like winged creatures.”

As always, please share your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Ugh, this wreaks of Oscar bait and crap...a bad mix.

    Crash 2?

I have a lot of faith in this film because of the director. Rowan Woods has directed a couple of incredibly powerful films, and I have no doubt that the reason he attracted such a fantastic cast was because of them. Thematically, they deal with similarly traumatised characters and pivotal events but they definitely don't resemble 'Crash'. Less complicated structurally and more morally complex. I highly, highly recommend 'The Boys' (starring David Wenham and Toni Collette). 'Little Fish' also features a great performance from Cate Blanchett.

haha that picture has a total Titanic vibe to it.
  • And the oscar goes to...

    Whadda loada horseshit
  • Dustin
Interesting. I'll keep an eye on this one.
  • I wasnt interested, then I was, then it lost me. I hope it was just poor editing. In my mind it seems like everyone has the answer but its the answer to someone elses problem. I hate those types of movies.
  • Kaboodle Monster
Despite all the apparent drama going on I didn't really get any emotion from the trailer.

I haven't seen "the boys" but I found "Little Fish" really arduous. More of this social-realist bullshit that's totally pointless and wastes the likes of Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett. It's especially annoying when the director clearly has some talent but gets too wrapped up in being an "artist" to make an entertaining film. So hopefully, we arn't in for more of the same.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
I agree it doesn't look that good and will proabably end up being just average. To me it looks more like defunct TV series "The Nine" than Crash.
  • ddy_blue
i want to watch this film...especially for dakota fanning....she is growing so fast and she is blossoming into a girl..lol yes a girl i always saw her as a kid and now can't wait to see her in action hot female teenage girls movies! ( NOTHING perversive of course guys!)
  • evanz
Oscar bait? Hardly. In my Netflix queue a year from now. Probably.
  • I absolutely agree this has a annoyingly present Crash vibe, minus the whole racism bit. This movie is just about stereotypical people blaming a knowingly screwed up world for all of their problems. Did anyone act thankfully that they actually survived the shooting ordeal? The only person who I could really understand throwing a hissy fit would be Guy Pearce's character, simply because of the undeserving guilt he would naturally place on himself. Everyone else has no excuse. This movie looks like it just ready to play on the emotional heart strings of both the unsuspecting movie-goer and the Academy.
  • YoungZe
Looks decent, i give it a shot.
  • Andrew F
I'm defiantly going to keep an eye on this but that's mostly because Forest Whittaker is one of my favorite actors.
  • Agony
Wow, some of you guys don't know how to separate your own preferences and beliefs from actual constructive criticism. Just because a character doesn't act like you think you would doesn't make the story a bad story. You already have your mind made up and all you've seen is a trailer. Sometimes I wonder why some of you even visit a film website, because you don't really seem to like film. Maybe you'll appreciate character pieces and moral complexity when you're older.

Now feel free to bash away. . .

looks good to me. although it does kinda have that Crash'ish style, these things happen daily in LA and most of have no idea how we would respond if we were there. should make us all take a look at ourselves and see if we can decide how we all might react after something like that.
  • Matt
I agree with most of what's been said. Doesn't look bad but doesn't grab me either.

  • Bilobatedtimmo
Was I the only one hoping this was a ridiculous horror movie about "winged creatures"?

Needless to say I was disappointed when I found out it was oscar bait.
  • Meli
LoL @ Bilobatedtimmo - when I saw the title I thought it might be
a cool mythical movie or some such and then I read the rest of
the article and felt a little disappointed too.

The trailer didn't do much for me. It looks like one of those dramas
I'd pick to watch on a rainy weekend afternoon to pass the time.
  • I predict multiple Oscar noms without a win (a la In the Bedroom).
  • kingdarius
    Crash minus the racial issues
  • Captain Awesome
Thats the bad thing about that title. I went into this thinking it was about actual "winged creatures". Like some bat things coming down and taking people for their own consumption.

    I was disspointed.
  • Ian
I agree with you Agony - most of the guys here seem to get off on comic books and movies that blow up shit! And they take em far too seriously. Playstation generation.
  • Captain Awesome
    Ian,

This films does look and sound exactly like the Oscar-trite thats designed for the chance at an award. Crash was one of them for me. I can't think of a more hokey and super-cliche film with every possible social exaggeration thrown into the pot. Crash tried to do what films like Traffic did, but it failed at showing many facets that ran into each other.

Crash was in love with itself and wouldn't stop with the sledgehammer on the head story-telling. I get it, the director has never been to LA in his life!

I'm definitely going to see this movie. Yes there are many great actors in this movie and everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think its seems interesting. I respect the comment about our lives are fleeting like birds in flight. WELL SAID.....WINGED CREATURES. Some of my favorite actresses are in this one. Jennifer Hudson, Dakita and Forrest. The cast is awesome and the movie gets my vote. Such a harsh judgemental group of responses.
  • Sam Potter
I think I had to just say, when Felicia said, "Some of my favorite actresses are in the one: Jennifer Hudson, Dakita and Forrest," I had to chuckle due to Forrest's inclusion as an actress. hahaha
  • The trailer was interesting enough. I have to see the film before I can pass ultimate judgment. Granted it does smell a little like "Crash" but I'm hoping for a better cohesive-connected story.
  • Dave
Kate Beckinsale should take her tits out to distract the shooter. That would make me the shooter.
  • For all of you crying because judgment is being passed on a movie nobody here has seen,

A movie trailer is a clever marketing tool, sure. But they are also gauges that let us know whether are not we, as the viewer, will enjoy watching an upcoming movie. I watch a movie trailer, and most of the time, I have a pretty good idea about how I will receive the movie. This trailer is no different. I think we would all agree that everything that needs to be known about this movie in reference to plot, characters, and themes is present in the trailer. Some of you are already calling it a morally complex character piece, even though you have yet to see the movie yourself. The rope swings both ways. All I am saying is that after watching a full movie trailer, it is fair game to comment on it with respect to the movie as a whole. That is all anyone was doing, and most of the comments were respectfully civil anyway (unless "oscar-bait" is some sort of dirty word). Will the movie wind up being better than the trailer? It's possible. But I wouldn't count on it.
  • Cristina
I think it looks quite interesting and very powerful. I really want to see it because of the presence of Josh and Dakota, two of my favorite children actors. However, it being rated R, I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD...I love the quote about the whole 'our life is fleeting like a bird in flight, winged creatures." I'm glad its not one of those stupid comedies Hollywood seems to like making these days. It looks to have a real message. Can't wait until the release!
  • DF
    The cast is great.
The story (from what was revealed in the trailer) looks lame and cliché.
  • waltponce
CRASH WAS ABOUT RACISM IN LOS ANELES, RETARDS!!!!!!!

This film is about the psychological effects of being involved in a majorly traumatic event.

Suck it up, geeks, losers, and cynics (sorry, I forgot bloggers) this movie looks pretty decent.
  • I can't wait to see this movie!
  • sara
It looks like it could be interesting, so I'll probably go see it. But, wow at Dakota Fanning! She's growing up to be quite a young lady. I've always wondered what kind of actress she'd be as she got older. And, interesting that she'll be in two movies with Hudson (this one and the other one with Queen Latifah). As for Hudson, sorry, but I still don't think she's anything special. As a singer, yes, but as an actress, no.
  • Mira
Looks good to me, I'll be keeping an eye on it.
  • alexis
this loooks like an awesome movie:)
  • i read the book ahnd it was amazing no doubt the movie will be awsome to. most people who made those rude remarks probably have not read the book yet.
