Since The Dark Knight is headed to become the second biggest grossing film of all time (domestically), rumors have already begun as to what villains will be featured in the enevitable sequel. The latest from the rumor mill has Johnny Depp as The Riddler, Angelina Jolie as The Catwoman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin. Oh my!

Wouldn’t Johnny Depp make a great Riddler? Yeah, BUT the truth of the matter is that Christopher Nolan has not yet signed on for a third Batman film. His brother and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan is supposedly still on the set doing work for Terminator Salvation. And who knows what David Goyer is up to. Even if he is busy penning a treatment, which is doubtful, I’m confident that casting talks won’t take place for quite some time. Nolan is also the type of guy to cast a role only when he has a script in hand. So I’m sure we won’t hear any casting announcements any time soon. But also take note that none of the actors who have played villains thus far were considered A-listers. And by that I mean, none of them alone could (at least, at the time) open a big blockbuster movie.

As to which villains will be featured in the next Batman film?

Goyer recently told MTV that Chris has decided on a theme for a potential third film. And anyone who has seen either of Nolan’s Batman films know that the theme is inexorably tied to the villain. And while I can easily imagine someone like The Riddler in the Nolanverse, turned into a serial killer who leaves clues behind. I can’t quite imagine a theme based on The Riddler, which would effect Bruce Wayne. And the same could be said for many of the prominent characters in the Batman franchise.

And remember, Goyer and Nolan told us that with 70 years of Batman history, they are more interested in some of the “dozens if not hundreds of other characters” that “had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the sixties TV show before.” My guess is that the villain might not be anyone we expect.

Johnny Depp as the riddler would be so dope.
  • Never Pan
Jim Carrey Would be better. He'd play it different than he did last time. Better than last time.
  • I was just watching the Chisopher Titus special on cable, Now watching him on stage & then thinking about him as THE RIDDLER.... I just can't see anyone else being better for the part. He's got a animated way that can make you laugh, think & scare the crap out of you at the same time, & that is what made the RIDDLER a great villian. As for Jonny Depp & Jim Carry..... well you can play the same character in 2 seperate types of movies. & Depp, well his eyes aren't sinister enough to pull it off. This new series of Batman movies are more for adults & Carry is to much of a cartoon... Watch a Chistophor Titus show, or a stand up special & you'll see it too as I have.

I want the Riddler, but I'll be happy to just see a above average third film from a franchise.
  • Oh Blair
    RIDDLE ME THIS?
  • th1nk
    Clock King and Calendar Man!
  • Crispin Glover would make a better Riddler.

Personally.. I hope Nolan walks away from the Batman franchise for a few years ....and does The Prisoner.
  • El Bart-O
    DEADSHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Captain Awesome
Crispin Glover and The Riddler would be way too much like the Joker. I've always found the character to be a much weaker version of the Joker, just with "riddles". Characters like Catwoman, Riddler, and Penguin would need a complete make-over by Nolan to fit his Batman world.

Nolan can tackle a badass mob boss character like The Black Mask and maybe get a war going by paying a huge offer for Batman's head. Calling both Batman out and a guy like Deadshot from the woodwork.

As with Batman Begins, Nolan will take a break and figure out what to do. Like he did with The Prestige. But I really do hope Nolan makes a third film.
  • mebedir
the joker and riddler are nothing alike, the joker is a psychopath who laughs at morbid jokes, the riddler is a genius with a criminal pathology that forces him to make things into a riddle, the riddler is sophisticated, calm, and collected, not like the jim carrey version. The joker is almost never calm or collected, though much better than the riddler.

I don't wanna see riddler just because I think Ideas like the black mask, or catwoman (Yes a great catwoman) would be better.
  • Ryan
Actually I could easily see a very strong a poignant theme tied to The Riddler; identity.

As would obviously occur should you don a cape and fight crime, your identity could become confused. I imagine that Batman, with no Rachel to entice him into retirement, would become less and less of Bruce Wayne, easily losing himself as Batman.

Now, in one edition of the Gotham Times there was a letter from Edward Nashton, the true name of Edward Nygma a.k.a. The Riddler. The letter said that Harvey Dent could not be trusted. Typically speaking Edward is considered somewhat of a genius with deductive skills to rival Batman's own. Knowing that he writes to the Gotham Times I could imagine the following scenario:

Riddler, seeing the hate being slung towards Batman now that he is taking blame for the murders committed by Dent, spies a way to rise into the limelight and be showered with the fame he feels he deserves as a genius. (This need for attention is something often referred to in the comics.)
Riddler studies Batman's patterns and appearances, calculating likely trajectories and quickly works out a list of possible citizens. He decides to break into their homes and leave them all riddles specifically designed to bring out answers characteristic of the Batman without the victim even knowing. Bruce Wayne, seeing that there is a threat against his company within Riddler's message sets out to find him. The Riddler notices no response is given from Wayne and deduces that he is Batman.
Using this knowledge Nygma writes in to the Gotham Times saying he knows who the Batman is and demands an interview with Mike Engel on Gotham Tonight. On the show, as he is about to reveal who Batman is, a concept strikes him. Why not play a game? He reveals a clue each week on the program that forms a riddle. The answer is that Batman's parents were murdered by Joe Chill. Every time someone phones in with an incorrect response to the riddle, Nygma has goons cause a ruckus.
Batman eventually notices this trend and takes steps to apprehend Nygma as a criminal. However, Riddler is expecting this and lays a trap for Batman, involving an intricate system of links between everyone involved in his life. The only way for the situation to be remedied is for Mayne to make moves publicly as himself, and not Batman, effectively forcing him come to turns with himself as a single man and not to separate entities.

And then more shit happens I don't know. That is some rough idea that would need to be messed with, but all the same it seems to me Riddler could be perfect for this themed film. It is interesting to note that in the Hush run in the Batman comics, it is learned the Riddler discovered Batman is Wayne using his intellect.
  • Goobity
I agree, Jonny. We don't need to see a sequel in two years just to justify some arbitrary time-line (like Marvel seems to be rushing toward). I'll happily wait five years, if the end result is on par with The Dark Knight.
  • matma
i remember an article (EW?) saying David Tennant (Doctor Who) was interested in playing The Riddler, and I haven't been able to imagine anyone else since. I think he is a perfect fit. Just my opinion.
  • Oh Blair
    ARNOLD AS MR. FREEZE PLZ
  • dvq
hey Peter, whats with the pinapple in the /Film logo? is it related to Pineaple Express? :)
  • Goobity
@ Ryan : Honestly, the Riddler is the obvious choice for the sequel, judging by the huge response to The Dark Knight's viral campaign. Can you imagine what people would go through to solve the Riddles?
  • StarBlazer101
    ii say
    bring on Deadshot!
  • mike
angelina jolie as catwoman and bringing in the penguin would be too much. they will ruin the trilogy by doing that. keep it dark and depp as the riddler sounds perfect!
  • T-MACK
Thank you for reporting this. It was irritating having some news outlets circulating these casting rumors when they were nothing more than fanboy fantasies. Marion Cottilard as Catwoman while we're at it, though.
  • dvq: Yeah, its part of a week long pineapple express ad campaign which will start on Monday.
  • Dave
I agree with you Ryan. My friends and I deduced the same scenario more or less for the third film. Our theme was also identity! It really is the most logical step into the franchise. With Mr. Reese finding out that Lucius was helping out Batman, it's only a matter of time before people find out that Bruce is Batman.
  • .m
No rush to the Nolan brothers.
    Good things comes with time.
I'm rather wait for a really good movie worth watching.

    ...

    bout villain,
i remember watching 'adam west' batman tv series..
the clash with 'the green hornet' is one of the coolest episode I've ever seen.
  • Chadwick
I think Warner Bros should make something similar to 'The Dark Knight Returns' by Frank Miller... make the film a few years into the future, Bruce Wayne has discontinued being Batman. The major threat in gotham is anarchy(i.e. the mutants) and Bruce must withdrawal from retirement and become Batman, even though he is considered a vigilante. Include the joker and two face, similarily portrayed in the 'dark knight returns' graphic novel... i noticed a post earlier that zack snyder was interested in the source material... hell, let him do it! just make this movie a reality.
  • Captain Awesome
I just found this on Wikipedia:

    "Nolan Series

When the very first details about The Dark Knight were released, they alleged that Roman Sionis/Black Mask was to be one of the antagonists of the film.[citation needed] He was described as an industrial heir who loses his company to Bruce Wayne and adopts the Black Mask persona for revenge. By the time Jonathan Nolan wrote the final draft, he was cut, though a prisoner on the boat (played by Tommy Lister) can be seen with tattoos on his neck with the design and pattern of The Black Mask. Black Mask is rumoured to be on the list of many villains set to appear in the sequel to the Dark Knight."

    Nice!
  • John
I say the Riddler or Madhatter because Depp would be awesome for both. Or if they decide to keep the two villian theme keep both. I think Daniel Day Lewis can play a good Riddler with Depp as Madhatter. Though he is doing it in Wonderland so maybe not. I rather him do it in Batman 3
  • Captain Awesome
    Chadwick,

    Hell no.
  • TheMarquis
i'd love to see the Riddler done as an even more sinister version of Simon Gruber from Die Hard III. Gruber taunted McClane with riddles, sending him around the city to do everything from answering a phone to stopping a bomb from going off in a children's park. even then, [SPOILER] he had different motives, even tricking his own men into thinking they were part of a different plan. He was extremely smart and crafty and clever, something the Riddler would be. If the Riddler is played along those much more dangerous lines [rather than sucking the brainwaves off of Gotham's TV-heads], I think it would be fantastic.
  • mebedir
That is exactly what I think if they did the riddler, I wish that they could cast jeremy Irons from twenty years ago for it too because he is an awesome actor, but that is who I see as the riddler, not some joker copy like people (who don't know thier fingers from thier toes) seem to think.
  • kevin
i know ledger is dead but is joker completely out of it for the third film is it impossible to follow up?
  • gah
The thing is whatever villian it is or whoever they get the kind of talent needs to be up there with Depp and Hoffman. Thats the right caliber actor they need.
  • Wow, nice find Captain awesome, but Lister did a really good deed in throwing out the bomb detonator... kind hard to see him come in as a villain later on. Don't know much about the Black Mask character though, it just seemed a little out of place to be a villain in the next movie. Maybe it was just a homage to the old draft that Jonathan Nolan had previously penned?
  • Vin
I think Daniel Day Lewis as the Black Mask would be pretty sweet.
  • Captain Awesome
    kevin,

From the original theme I did hear about for a third film. It was supposed to be a sort of "Trial of The Joker" type of deal. So its still possible. But I honestly wouldn't want the Joker taken up again, especially since Ledger nailed it out of the park so masterfully.

Daniel Day Lewis would be great to have in the film for another villian. Depp and Jolie? Those two are too comical for me even when they're in their element. I don't find either to be menacing or dominating enough to take up a villian role in a third Batman movie.

Nolan will surprise us with faces we wouldn't have considered. Just like he did with Ledger. And I'll be the first to admit when he announced him for the Joker I wasn't excited until I began seeing pictures of the make-up. And his performance in TDK proved Nolan has an amazing eye for casting characters like this.
  • Captain Awesome
    garrettj,

Possibly. But you could play-up the fact that he did that knowing he could have a chance at Bruce nce he got out

    :)
  • mike
ben foster should play the next villain
  • jeff
Paul Giamatti would be the perfect penguin
  • Captain Awesome
    jeff,

Great fucking choice there. Giamatti is awesome.
  • Mag
well with the ending of Dark Knight it's only right to assume a bounty on Batman head meaning DEADSHOT!!!!
  • Fost
Damn, Paul Giamatti is perfect for the Penguin.

I dont really dont wanna see Jolie in a sequel. Depp and Hoffman are really good choices too.
  • Wall-E Plays Pong
Well if the Joker was a very illogical character and impulsive, despite the methodical plans he made to enact chaos in Gotham, the Riddler would work well as someone exactly opposite: a completely logical character with logic based "puzzles". I don't know how the theme of logic could be used, but chaos and order and the consequences of following either to extremes seemed to be the theme of "The Dark Knight".

Some men aren't looking for anything logical, but some men might be. I suppose rigid mechanical thinking could be incorporated someway, and the limitations it would put on someone's soul. Batman might be forced to play the riddler's games, maybe even become obsessed with them to a point of self detriment, and only defeat him through some clever lateral thinking. I 'dunno, I'm just throwing some ideas out there.
  • Eli
I hope Christopher Nolan will only announce working on a sequel when he believes he can improve on The Dark Knight. He said (regarding TDK) that he was only making it because he could improve on the previous (Batman Begins).
  • Jacob
I have the perfect 2 villians Hush and the Riddler. As the
Riddler Johnny Depp or someone who can blow us all away. And as for Hush i do not know.
  • Jacob
I have the perfect 2 villians Hush and the Riddler. As the
Riddler Johnny Depp or someone who can blow us all away.
And as for Hush Dylan Walsh the gut on nip/tuck
  • Aeghast
"My guess is that the villain might not be anyone we expect." Nothing wrong with that. I trust Nolan 100% so, let's wait. Still three or four years before a TDK sequel so.. why hurry? But, please, no Angelina Jolie
  • Guy Pearce as Deadshot
  • keniwa
I would really love to see the Reaper on the next batman film.Unlike Bruce Wayne, the reaper WILL kill in order to put order on Gotham City, which will be a real conflict when Batman decided to use guns against this dark formidable foe.
  • mebedir
Batman should never use guns, EVER thats just ruining the character.
  • clarence somerset
I find the Batman-as-fugitive theme more interesting. Indeed, TDK left the tale at that: with Gotham rallying against the dark knight. Perhaps a newly elected mayor will pit every police resource into hunting down Batman, backed by popular will. Gordon, knowing the truth, will have to juggle both sides of the problem. It'll be great to see Batman being chased by the National Guard and GPD, perhaps being forced to kill many innocent cops in the process. That brings up the question whether Gotham is better off without Batman. To push Batman's desperation further, maybe a major character can be killed off (Lucius Fox perhaps), thus ridding Batman of a major ally. I do hope the TwoFace storyline can be extended. TwoFace as the leader of Gotham's dispossessed aka Anarky? A total revolution against the existing political system. If the first film was about Batman, the second about anarchy, the third can be an extended ode to Gotham itself. Maybe there will be a major villain too.
  • Brian from OR
Nolan is very smart of taking his time with the movies and wanting to do something different with them every time. The only negative comment I have about Nolan is that he has a hard time filming the fight scenes. I can't tell what is going on. That was true of Batman Begins, it was a little better in Dark Knight but I got lost a little bit with the end battle. Honestly im not sure what villain they could use since the fact that you end up with a villain that is to similar to the Joker or too out there for the Nolan Universe like Killer Croc. Penguin is a character that Nolan has said would be too much of stretch for him.

A theme they could use for the next film is Redemption. Batman has to redeem himself in the eyes of the public. It also plays into the idea of how Batman redeeming himself brings Gothem into the "dawn." The only villian I could figure out that worked into that theme was Mr. Freeze. I can see Mr. Freeze redeeming himself at the end for all of the wrong he has done in the name of his wife. But if they use Mr. Freeze it will most likely be a very different verison of Mr. Freeze. Since its hard to see the comic book Mr. Freeze in the realistic Nolan Universe.
  • james
Only one person on here even reads the comic book. Nolan is not going the route of multiple villains like every other retard director who has ruined a superhero movie.

Hush and maybe a long Halloween type of story. Maybe a return of Rah a Guhl or maybe the breaking of batman like bane, but more evolved. Riddler and catwoman or penguin are ok, but have been done and really, isnt that enough. Give batman a work, make him fight villain after villain. Break him....maybe even come up with an original character....
