Could The Dark Knight Sink the Titanic?

Could The Dark Knight overtake Titanic to become the largest grossing domestic movie of all time? In just 13 days, The Dark Knight has taken in over $342.6 million domestically, and another $128.3 million internationally. The film is already in the top 15 films of all time, and is adding millions more each day. But will Batman be able to top Titanic’s $600.7 million record? Box office analysts admit that it isn’t out of the question. Most people expect the film to take in at least another $80 million, but who knows how much more.

Titanic was the number one movie at the box office for almost three-and-a-half months, but The Dark Knight got the head start that Titanic never had. Titanic took eight weeks to do what The Dark Knight did in less than two. A mid-summer release date means that The Dark Knight will have to contend with a lot more competition than James Cameron’s film, which bowed during Oscar season. No one knows if The Dark Knight have the legs to take the Titanic record. Fans are seeing the movie two or three times, and a lot of moviegoers have yet to see the film due to ticket sellouts and packed theaters.

  • i think its possible most of the people i know saw it more then once and there not even hardcore batman fans but like the article said there are alot of people who havent even seen it yet because of it constantly being sold out in alot of theartes
  • sp
yes! cmon people, we can do it! I really hate that Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time, it sucks. I've already seen TDK like 4 times and will probably go again very soon. sweet.
  • Freddie
Is The Dark Knight a good enough film to overcome the Titanic? Absolutely. Will it? Not likely. The Titanic and it's run were honestly an enigma and something that will likely never happen again. And as already was stated, the run of movies that are coming out will likely draw on the same audience as those interested in TDK.
  • AJ
It will need a lot of repeat business, which it seems to be getting. Titanic was kept afloat for months because preteen girls loved "leo." But TDK not only has teen girls that love Heath Ledger from A Knights Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You and will see it more than once but also fanboys.
  • Aeghast
"Could The Dark Knight Sink the Titanic?" Oh yes. This time, boys are bringing girls (meaning, TDK is not a chick flick) Ha! Go TDK!
  • Captain Awesome
It's definitely possible. It's broken most of the records people said it wouldn't already.
  • Nelace
Hmmm...."Titanic" has been No. 1 for a long hot minute. The main thing is that "TDK" has to have strong legs during this Summer season. So far, it's been tracking very consistently, but the coming wks remain to be seen. Based on the buzz the film is still getting, the number that still haven't seen it, and the Oscar buzz, I'd say it will atleast make another $100 million, domestically speaking. Overseas, it's still scheduled to open in a ton of markets, so it's overall total COULD top a billion, like "Dead Man's Chest" did. With $333 million in the can so far in JUST 12 days, that is fuckin' EXCEPTIONAL! It'll atleast do $450 mill domestically, I'm callin' it, especially granted that it will stay in theatres for atleast another 2 months like the other blockbusters have. Even if it has a 50% drop from last wkend, that's what....another $37 mill from Fri to Sun??? Yeah, it'll atleast do $450 mill by DVD release-date. Gosh golly, this box office ish is extremely for "TDK" for some reason! Haha, I never watched a movie's numbers like I have with this. Anyone with me on that!?
  • Daniel
Only $80 million more? That seems like a VERY low estimate for how much more it will make. I think it will get near $500 million. The summer still has a few movies that are going to "steal" cash from TDK.
  • No.
  • TheGuyInThePJ's
It should take Star Wars number 2 spot, that is almost a lock. But can it take Titanic's Top Dog spot... Maybe.
  • James
It won't beat Titanic, but I think it might end up 3rd or 4th of all-time. Which ain't bad for a Batman movie.
  • Ross
Three and a half months at #1?!?!?!?!

    Go TDK!
  • Dylan D.
I think you have to put into account all the other movies that will be coming out this summer. Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder
  • TDK has a chance to beat Titanic. Its got a much longer season to work with for starters, and if they want to delay home video, they could prolly milk a re-release at Thanksgiving thru New Years Day. Let it stick around awhile, pump it up for the major awards, and resist the home video release windfall until just before the Oscars. Follow that track, and keep it exclusive to theaters and pump the award factor at Christmas, it could have serious legs.

They should campaign like mad to get Aaron Eckhart & Heath Ledger nominations. It seems that those two had parts just as big Bale's so why not go for Best Actor? I would even consider it a candidate for Best Picture, Director, Music, Makeup, and Screenplay.

People will go see it again if home video isn't an immediate outlet.
  • Logan
GO GO BATMAN! Please for the love of god sink Titanic a second time. It's pathetic that Titanic is the #1 grossing movie of all time. ...god damn, I hate that movie so much.
  • why are people bashing Titanic? I think it's a superb movie with a fantastic love story, solid acting, solid cinemateography, and all that jazz.

Many of you boys need to stop trying to be so hardass. It's getting tiring and boring.

I have no idea if TDK will surpass Titanic as the #1 grossing film of all time, though. Titanic is a tragic love story that many people felt like they could relate to. TDK, on the other hand... I dont know?
  • Ohiofile
I don't think that it's going to beat Titanic, BUT hopefully we will get some better movies out of this situation. Can you imagine what it would be like for other high level directors to be given a blank check to make something compelling and artistic like TDK? We might be seeing it already with Watchmen and Avatar. Maybe Inglorious Bastards could be another example. I'm excited for the next couple of years of film.
  • Nelace
    @ Charlie

I agree that Nolan will probably get a nom for Best Director, a nom/win for Ledger for Best Supporting Actor, and a nom for Best Picture. Mark my words! And yeah, if they just keep it in theatres and let the buzz keep it movin, it'll keep those legs. Oscar nom buzz will earn atleast another $30 mill.
  • gah
    @ Peter

Did you see the Batman 3 casting rumor Cinematical posted???

    http://www.cinematical.com/2008/07/31/new-batma...
  • Domestically, maybe. Internationally, no chance. The international appeal of TITANIC shows in its overall gross, and I'm sorry but there is no way THE DARK KNIGHT has enough international interest to surpass the $1.8billion mark.
  • If TDK does better overseas I think it's got a better chance. As it is, Titanic has an ungodly amount from that alone.
  • No, It wont beat Titanic....I do think it will hit $500 million before all is said and done...
  • Brody
    @ Gah

Depp or Casey Affleck would be great for the Riddler. I actually liked Carrey as well, he'd need to Nolanize it but it could work.
  • Coral
I will lawl if TDK beats the third Mummy movie at B.O this weekend.
  • Matthew
I'm glad this conversation came up because I was waiting for this site to say something. I really hope it does, but who knows.
  • Luke
    No way.
  • I'm not sure it can beat Titanic but I wouldn't have guessed TDK would have made this much money already. The Imax theaters in New York are still selling out. It could happen seeing as August is pretty empty as far as tentpoles with the possible exception of Tropic Thunder which should bite a little into the audience. Anything's possible though.
  • Identitytheft
Sorry. Not gonna happen. Titanic got ga-ga business from tween girls and couples, plus it had virtually no competition since it came out during slow season. TDK was fantastic, but this is one record it can't topple.
  • Superman
    Gordon's alliiiiiiiiiiiiiivvve?????????
  • Packed theatres? Hm. I'm in the UK and went to an afternoon showing (school holidays now on) and there was only about 30 people there! I think there's a lot of fan adoration for TDK (hence the IMDb "hacK"), so I doubt it'll take Titanic's record. That film captured EVERYONE'S imaginations. TDK *generally* appeals to only men, too. And, after seeing the film, while definitely excellent (4/5 rating from me), I didn't think I was watching a *phenomenon* as it's being hyped. It's just a very good comic-book film, with a particularly strong performance from Ledger. In fact, take away The Joker and it's a 3/5 film. And Begins had a better story, imo.
  • gocitizen
I don't know about box office, but combined with merchandising, you'd think that TDK's take would exceed Titanic. They just didn't sell a lot of die cast sinking ships. I know the score/soundtrack for Titanic was a big seller, but I'd imagine that The Dark Knight score does fairly well.

I rarely see a film twice in the theater, but I've already been 3 times. I'm considering going to another Imax showing just to take in the sound design one more time.
  • Dan: We're talking about the domestic record, not the international record... Theaters in the states are still packed. The movie is still pulling in $10 million on a tuesday in the U.S..
  • TheDaftPunk
Titanic was a well made movie; but as a guy, there was literally no appeal for me. A lot of women must have been lonely on those cold, winter nights. I certainly hope TDK will destroy Titanic.
  • Chump Force 1
If TDK averages a week over week 50% drop over the next 4 to 6 weeks it will only total another 80 to 100 million so I don't think it will come close to Titanic. Certainly if you adjust for inflation no way TDK will beat Titanic, I think the inflation adjustment is somewhere just below 800 million.
  • Captain Awesome
    Dan,

Check out the daily domestic numbers
    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily...

This film is still bringing in close to 10 million a "day". Thats amazing, even in the middle of the week. Then it jumps it as it gets closer to the weekends. The fact that Imax and regular DLP screenings "are" selling out during the week is crazy.

Two friends of mine had to buy online tickets to see TDK just last week on a Wednesday. And there was a line for their 5pm showing.
  • TheGuyInThePJ's
Just think... this time next week TDK will be the highest grossing comic-book film of all time (topping Spiderman's $403m).
  • A Better Class of Criminal
First and foremost, Titanic was a great film... so was TDK. So let's get over this "deserves the #1 spot" idea and just go with the facts.

I don't know if it will beat Titanic, but it would be nice to see another movie take the spot, especially this one. I think it would also continue sending the message of the necessity of quality blockbuster films to the major companies so they'll hire more quality directors to make them.

By the way... what was the #1 move before Titanic, I've been wondering this for a while.
  • Whiskey
    Not a chance...
Star Wars maybe, but Titanic was in theaters for way too long.
  • jfive
    Sink that bloody ship bats!!
  • I dont see how some of you guys come up with these projections. While TDK is grossing off the chart numbers, it still won't beat Titanic, which was pulling 20-30mil ish for like 3 solid months, TDK will burn off steam in another month or so. Whoever said it has a chance to overtake Star Wars is a pretty good estimate, thats defintely possible. Titanic is also an amazing movie with one of the best special effect scenes of its time (obviously the sinking ship) and was so much more of an epic then TDK is. I like TDK more as a movie but Titanic is nothing to call a crap flick. Let the fanboy crazyness die down, we get it, you love the movie, but you don't get crap if it grosses #1 of all time so why does it even matter? The sheer date movie factor of Titanic alone is enough to keep it afloat.

Its great that it beat the POS that spiderman 3 is, it really deserved to top that for opening weekend but Titanic is a truly epic film that while not may be the MOST deserving film of that honor, it does deserve it

As for the Oscars, you people honestly think its going to get nominated and or win Best Director/Best picture? Best supporting actor is almost a dead given nomination but there has to be some exceptionally bad movies released in the next 6 months for TDK to get a best directing / best picture nomination.

"Titanic was a well made movie; but as a guy, there was literally no appeal for me. "

Take off your man suit and appreciate it for what it was, you aren't any less masculine for enjoying a well made love story.
  • @A better class of criminal, forgot this part

Pretty sure Star Wars was, as it holds the #2 slot right now.
  • Mayroth
    it'll pass it.
  • jj gonzo
Stick a fork in the TITANIC,
all hail the king of the world...
    THE JOKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • It could. But it won't. Though it's rather early to give an absolute yes or no. But the hype is getting too big for its own good.
  • charles
Well I'll be happy to see it get close. Making around $500 million would be good.
  • Matt
Why all this hate towards Titanic? I think most people are just jealous that Titanic made so much money and won so many awards. In my opinion, Titanic is the greatest movie ever made.

As for saying the only reason Titanic made so much money was because teen girls kept seeing it over and over again...well, that's false. No movie makes THAT much money, without appealing to all demographics for repeat business. Men, women, girls and boys saw that movie over and over. Sure, women loved Leo. But Titanic had so much more than that, such as action and suspense. It drew everyone, from all walks of life and that's why it made so much money.

There is no way TDK will make more than Titanic in worldwide gross and I doubt it will make more domestically. But who knows?
  • StarBlazer101
Well let's face it, Titanic had no competition back in 1997/1998. TDK has to go head to head this friday against the Mummy 3 and in the coming weeks Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, and the new Star Wars movie.
  • blintznpingas
How could people say that Titanic was a good movie (maybe just average). People who know history knew the damn boat was going to sink in the end. I mean you did not have to guess about that unless you are a girlteenbot. Lets face it the girl teenbots kept going to see the movie they probably thought they were watching a true story god how pathetic.. I have to however admit that Titanic will not be topped by TDK. TDK will not topple Titanic and I will tell you why. I was a teenager when Titanic came out, and I just like millions of other teenage boys knew what teenage girls wanted to go see. So yes I took during Titanics epic ride three different girls I scored with two of them. I contributed 6 admissions to that movie. Guys lets admit it I was not alone I saw many guys taking their wives and other girls they wanted to score with so we helped contribute to Titanic's massive numbers. TDK does not have this appeal so it will not top that Stupid boat movie but I can't hate on it too much it did contribute to me getting laid. As good as TDK is it does not have that factor.
  • You fanboys are hating on Titanic because you guys got teased, but never got to see Kate Winslet's boobflesh.
I would have said the difference was that you could get grandmas to go see Titanic, and not TDK, but I saw a fair number from the Blue Hair Mafia show up for a mid-day screening that was 2/3 full after a week of showings. So, Batman might have a chance at crossing generations like Titanic.
  • adp
    God, I hope so.
