CelebEdge is reporting a rumor that Johnny Depp will be re-teaming with Tim Burton (duh) to play The Mad Hatter in Burton’s upcoming hybrid adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Rumors have surrounded the project since it was first announced. At one point some reports were claiming that Depp was actually going to play Alice, as the film is supposed to incorporate performance capture. Thankfully that rumor didn’t end up being true, as In Treatment star Mia Wasikowska was announced for the part. So who knows, this could be true, or just another rumor. My guess is that Depp will be involved in the production in some capacity, and the Mad Hatter seems like the perfect fit.

  • charles
Yes that means no Mad Hatter in Batman 3
  • Christopher Edwards
I have heard a lot of rumours about himplaying thad hatter from a lot of different places.

But he is defenitly going to be doing somthing in this film and Bohem Carter.
  • Joe
    @charles

Don't be so sure. Maybe He'll play the Mad Hatter in this AND Batman. Kind of a crossover thing. ;-)

    Hey, ya never know!
  • Tim Burton is just gonna f--k it up. I'm sorry, people, but 'Alice in Wonderland' is a fantastic book that is MEANT TO BE READ!!!

When is Hollywood going to stop making movies out of Alice? It has amazing prose and language that cannot be replicated onscreen.

It is such a shame that many people has never read "Alice" or "Thru the Looking Glass."
  • I hope the Cheshire Cat turns out nice and freaky. I wonder who will do his voice? I hope it is a little more creepy than winnie the pooh.
  • Its only a rumor, but it will fits his role, as long as he doesn't play Alice
  • Yevacles
Money on Helena Bonham carter playing the queen of hearts.
  • Captain Awesome
The real rumor would be, "Is Depp really not in an actual Tim Burton production this time???"
  • Windmillninja
    Burton + Depp = Tired
  • Jerris Beutler's Day On
I don't get why Depp is considered a Hollywood elite. i mean scissor hands, a goofy pirate with make-up, Willy freakin Wonka, a singing barber.

Pathetic thing is...... 21 frigging Jumpstreet was probably the last legit acting role the guys had. The guys a hack, a one trick pony.
  • Emily
    Jerris:

Johnny Depp is the exact opposite of a one trick pony. A one trick pony is someone who can only do one thing, and does the same thing over and over. Take a look at Ed Wood, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Finding Neverland. 3 very different movies, with 3 very different performances from Depp.

I'm not saying his shit doesn't stink, but he is hardly a talentless hack.

And that being said... I'm l iffy about this Alice in Wonderland production. I feel like it will probably be another cracked-out book adaptation like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was.
  • Jamie
Has anyone noticed that Tim Burton's films... suck?

Planet of the Apes = piece of shit
Willy Wonka= okay. nothing amazing or ground breaking at all.
Wonderland = will be somewhere between piece of shit and okay.

    Fuck Tim Burton.
  • Captain Awesome
    Jerry,

When Depp stays away from the usual Hollywood shlock, he's pretty good. I liked him in From Hell, Blow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Donnie Brasco, Benny & Joon, Dead Man, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and Ed Wood.

His accents are fucking horrible though. Which is why when he does them, they sound like cartoon characters.
  • Father Bradley
Just curious - What the hell is the deal with the Mad Hatter? Is his sole gimmick that he's crazy and likes hats? What about the one in the Batman universe? What's his deal? Discuss....
  • Obvious choice for the Mad Hatter and probably is going to be cast. The Depp/Burton combo is good. I like the Pitt/Fincher combo the most, but this seems like a perfect match.
  • Mando
Hate to sound like a fanboy but Tim Burton's films really don't suck. I'll give you Planet of the Apes but it's pretty well known that he did not get along with producers while making the film and pretty much slopped it together as they could not agree. Charlie and the Chocolate factory was betetr than the original musical nonsense in my opinion. He brought us Batman and Batman returns, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Big Fish and more. If anything, his weak point is story, but certainly not vision. Which is why its cool that he makes movies from Books because the story has already been around, he can just put his unique vision on it.
  • Meli
This is an easy rumor to spread and should it become confirmed
    will anyone really be surprised??
  • Christine
    Of course he is.
  • cinemaniac1979
    @Christopher Edwards:

"But he is defenitly going to be doing somthing in this film and Bohem Carter."

What's he going to be doing in Helena Bonham Carter? :P

/cinemaniac1979 wonders what rock star Johnny Depp will emulate for this role. He hopes it be Glenn Danzig or Axl Rose.
  • Brendan
Tim Burton is unoriginal and overrated. Johnny Depp is tired, and quickly becoming a parody of himself. I don't have high hopes for this one.
  • JFK
Johnny Depp is not an actor that needs your criticism. Really I think there are several thousand other thespians who would benefit to have your well trained eyes for technique and craft focused on them. I'm looking at you CW fans.
  • BB
I like Burton and Depp, but I gotta agree that the whole thing is getting a little tired. But I loved Sweeney Todd which was their latest collaboration, so who knows? I just feel like Burton needs to switch up his style a little bit.
  • Texas Terro
Why should Burton switch his style? He's the only one with it. If you want to talk about books go to borders, this is a movie blog.
  • krackajap
I love how Jerris just completely overlooks movies like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Donnie Brasco, Finding Neverland and Blow.
  • Bluedayorange
Other than Big Fish Tim burton has not made a good film
since Ed Wood (1994) all the rest are just the same old unorginal crap.
  • Mayroth
You guys are all just haters. Tim Burton is one of the greatest directors ever. Before you go off judging a guy just to fit in with everyone else who hates Tim Burton, really just watch a few of his movies over a bit. I was really excited to hear Burton was doing an Alice movie. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a wonderful movie, so I have a lot of faith in Burton.

And, he's made a lot of my favorite films: Big Fish, Edward Scizzorhands, Batman, Sweeney Todd to name a few.
  • w smith
Sweeney Todd as reaffirmed by faith in Burton as a filmmaker. Sure - it was in line with his usual style and themes - but it was just so well crafted. As for Depp as the Mad Hatter? I can't think of anyone better to play him - as long as he decides to bring his A game like he did in Sweeney Todd
  • Jerris Beutler's Day On
Am I the only one who finds that pic up there mildly disturbing? Dude looks like a total child molester.
  • w smith
Jerris - I think Burton's Wonka was modeled somewhat after Michael Jackson - so no surprise there.
  • Jerris Beutler's Day On
Why would you model the star in your children's film after a reported chuild sex offender? And more importantly, why would the public accept that?
  • Bix Dugan
Why won't Tim Burton return any of Michael Keaton's calls?
  • It makes me laugh how silly most of the comments here are. Depp is a bad actor and Burton is a shitty director...those are the stupidest things I've ever heard. Tim Burton is AWESOME! And he's awesome EXACTLY because he has his own style...you can watch any of his movies and say: that's Burton - this is becoming rare these days. Depp is so great, he can play so many different characters and you can't imagine anyone else doing that like him.
di Caprio/Scorsese, Pitt/Fincher, Depp/Burton - what's the real problem with that? If all the movies (and I mean ALL) worked in the past, what's the problem? Btw, Helena-Bohan Carter isn't just Burton's wife; she's an excellent actress, and Fight Club, Harry Potter 5, and ALL the Burton's movies she played are here to prove it.
  • what??
wtf Tim Burton a bad director??? Ppl crack me up, they think they have movies and movie business figured out. They would give props to ppl like Michael Bay/george lucas types before they give props to burton. Tim Burton is an american original. He has his own style and doesn't rip off anybody. I love Chris Nolan....but is he really doing anything different than michael mann or david fincher (fight club)?? fuck no!! Tim Burton is just like Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the sense that they all have their own style to where when u see the trailer you know who the director is
  • Batman fan
    "What???" ...is right!
  • DVD-RW
Whatever not interested. But, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Batman 3 then I might reconsider.
  • -1
    Forget Tim Burton's Alice...
I want that long gestating American McGee's Alice (which will probably die a silent death if Tim gets his film out first).
  • Why IS a RAVen Like a WRIteing
Lets kick this off With that Hatter character...

The mad Hatter's "Deal" is... yes he likes hats, but at the same time he is one of the many characters that makes wonderland both very confusing and very wonderful at the same time. He is without a doubt a very complex character, if you delve into it...

I really hope that the Hatter isn't in Batman 3 because we are already doing that. lol I am playing the mad Hatter in a GREEN LANTERN fanfilm that is supposed to make its way onto a table in comicon next year...

The character (Or what I've studied) is possibly the greatest challenge that i could ever have asked for. The role is easy to create and write, but not easy to perform...

Wiki the mad hatter from the comics and look at everything that he suffers from, trying to take that and morph it into a wonderland of our very own is going to be an experience beyond anything that any of us have felt before...

This is the DARK KNIGHT of Fanfilms...

Myspace.com/sparrowdive if you wanna see the first one and if you want me to keep you updated on the Second one with the Hatter...

Also, any input from the rest of you as far as Mad Hatter ideas and concepts would greatly help with my performance and i would greatly appreciate it...

Yes, he is...Oh, and I am playing the RRRabbit (WWWabbit)

johnny depp IS one of the most amazing actors out there and tim burton IS also one of the most amazing directors out there!!

like everyone is saying burton has his own style nd sticks to it cuz it works! so what if he had a couple of crappy movies name one director tht hasn't nd depp works great with him so why should burton pick another actor besides him??? also, depp likes to play abnormal roles because hes just amazing at them, any burton movie needs depp in it cuz they just mesh so well together!

i hope this is true cuz it seems like a good movie to me
  • Meghan
I have a few things to say about all the things u all have said:

    1) all of u people who like johnny depp and tim burton? GO U!!!!! they are an amazing duo and they work great together.
    2) Johnny Depp is an absurdly awesome actor and Tim Burton makes original films that are way better than most of the generic crap that is in most theaters today
    3) People should read the "Alice" books, they are really good and you cant really understand the movies as well with out them
    4) Yes, Johnny Depp did look like a child molester in 'Willy Wonka', but that movie was still good (not as good as the book)
    5) Don't diss on Bonham Carter, she is not sleeping her way into jobs simply because she doesnt have to, she is an amazing actress
    5) Sweeney Todd was an amazing movie
    6) If you have a problem with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, then DONT WATCH THEM!!!!!! STOP COMPLAINING AND FIND A NEW HOBBIE!!!!! this new hobbie might not be insulting people on there lifes work, but it might be just as fun and even help your low self esteem, too.
  • The Comedian
And for those who didn't knew the Mad Hatter, in Batman's universe yes its obssesed with goddamm hats, but in darker interpretations, like the one on the graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House In A Serious Earth, he is a pedophile and a rapist, a really dark tone that could be applied to Nolan's movies. And after all adding some Willy Wonka to the mix with some Sweeny Todd minus singing, you can make Johnny Depp the Mad Hatter.
  • Maria
I absolutely lovee Johnny Depp! I can't wait till this movie comes out. I think its going to be ah-mazing. Tim Burton is such a great director, and even though some remakes of Disney Classics come out horribly, I really think this one is going to be awesome! Johnny Depp is the best actor EVER, in my opinion. *:
  • Sally
i think that tim burton is one of the best directors EVER! johnny depp is also the most amazing actor and deserves more recognition. you're all just haters because you dont like remakes of disney films. if you don't like tim burtons movies, then don't watch them. *sweeney todd is the best movie ever* AND dont insult johnny depp! he is my savior.<3
