MTV has finally confirmed that Darren Aronofsky’s Robocop film will most likely be Rated R. All I can say is Thank God. I can only imagine that Aronofsky’s Robocop won’t be a smooth chrome cyborg, and would likely be grittier than the original. I imagine that all the movie studios, including MGM, will attempt to take a cue from The Dark Knight and allow for a darker and less than traditional take. It would have been a huge mistake to make Aronofsky conform to a PG-13 rating, especially considering the original film was so over the top gory (earning an X rating during its first MPAA submission).

Producer Mike Medavoy also denied reports that the film might be filmed and released in 3D, a rumor that has persisted since MGM’s first mention of the project at Cannes. It has also been confirmed that the film is a “re-imagining” in the same vein as Batman Begins, and “definitely not a sequel”. No story details have been revealed, other than that the movie will deal with the theme of the merger or technology and humanity.
Variety says that it will take the sci-fi vigilante classic in more of a noir direction. Robocop i expected to hit theaters in 2010. Head on over to MTV to read the full interview with Medavoy.

Good, I trust the guy (Aronofsky). Let's see what he can do
  • Christopher Edwards
I hate the look of Robocop and hope they sort it out.

I dont want to make a final judgment on this until i read a plot or some script review becuase Robocop is my favourite Childhood films and it is very good.

I definitely trust him... but honestly, I'd like to trust him with some better source material. The reason I love the original is because it was so campy and tongue-in-cheek.

That said, I'd still buy it for a dollar
  • Sounds good.
  • Captain Awesome
    Sounds good so far.

I hope they keep the general look of his original design. Because I've always loved it. It didn't look Japanese and it didn't look like anything else out there at the time. Some tweaks here and there would be cool.

But you need to keep the internal thigh holster :)

You better not think your looking forward to this film more than me.
  • Kestrel
Mark my words. They are doing all the "probably R" talk for both robocop and terminator. . . . but it'll end up PG-13.
  • Project86
I honestly think this will be awesome. Of course, this will be Aronofsky's first mainstream flick, but heck, I trust him.

You know what I think would make this movie perfect? Stop motion animation. No CG stuff.
  • I do hope we have entered a new age where they let these movies actually have the balls they deserve. Although like everything else, it will be beaten into the ground in due time until we are aching for something more "fun" again. It is a vicious cycle and Hollywood does not know the word ""moderation".

Next up for the "re-" treatment...Total Recall.
  • The original ROBOCOP received an X-rating at first from the MPAA as it features one of the most violent scenes a genre film ever had. That's were the murphy character was getting his arms and legs blown off by a sawed off shot gun by the films villian. Some of it was trimmed to get an R but make no mistake that film has more edge that most movies today!

Just don't fuck it up, please. Also, Jill Hennessy is welcome to return as Dr. Marie Lazarus. If only for a cameo. :)
  • M&Co
    Robocop walks too slowly
  • grpress
I'm from MI and it better as hell still be based in D-Town...Fuck LA..Its not nearly as gritty as Detroit... Robocop was and is the closest thing we've got to a superhero LOL
  • Captain Awesome
    ha @ grpress

Maybe they will explain why he moves to LA. I can only assume he got tired of listening to Techno music :P
  • James Woods
good I am glad it wont be 3D, I hate wearing those stupid paper glasses required to see a 3D movie.

How many times have I heard this tiresome phrase?
'The director promises a darker, grittier version'. Christ in a bucket!!!
    Let there be Light!

This had better be good. The original Robocop is a f'ing classic. I can see how it could be "cool," however; it will contain none of the same qualities as the original. I WOULDN'T BUY THIS FOR A DOLLAR!

Before Christopher Nolan took over, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to make a Batman movie based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and have the author Frank Miller write the screenplay. By 2003 there was a first draft screenplay with story boards, which are properties of AOL Time Warner. Warner's decision for not producing the film is unknown, but based on the details that have since leaked out, it would probably have to do with the screenplay, which strayed a considerable amount from the source material, making Alfred an African-American mechanic named "Big Al," the Batmobile being a souped-up Lincoln Towncar, and Bruce Wayne being homeless, among other things.

THIS is the guy doing Robocop???
  • adinsx
    @Tracy:

This is also the guy who did Requiem for a Dream. I trust him.

    Nobody need doubt Mr. Aronofsky.

Here we go again, yet another 'remake' that will destroy original. Why do people do remakes of master-pieces? Robocop is the master-piece and cannot be done better, only worse especially nowadays when film making is on it's lowest lows (thanks to stupid greedy producers)... I will not watch this, I'll rather watch original 100 more times and enjoy it every single time :-P
