Kevin Smith Does Batman

We missed this in the madness of Comic Con, but Kevin Smith announced that he is co-writing a new Batman miniseries with pal Walt Flanagan (who View Askewers will know from Walt and Steve-Dave fame: “Tell Em Steve-Dave!). The three issue mini-series will re-introduce Onomatopoeia, a villain Smith created on his Green Arrow run. Not much is known about the character, only the he can perfectly imitate the sounds around him, rarely speaks and is skilled with weaponry.

While screenwriters in comics is now part of the norm, Smith was one of the first Hollywood writers to cross over to the comic book world with a highly acclaimed run on Daredevil. Smith later lost the good will of comic fans when he became late on a couple issues due to his Hollywood obligations. But apparently the scripts for this upcoming miniseries are already in hand, and the comics will begin hitting stores in November 2008.

Sounds interesting. I stopped buying comics per issue years ago. But if this is good and produced in a collected "hardcover" then I'll buy it.

Why am I not very pumped by hearing that news?
  • deathmetalhero
uh, its 'tell em steve dave'. That is all.
  • So this means we can expect to see the last part of the miniseries sometime between 3 years and never after the first comes out? Kevin Smith has been... bad about finishing comic story lines.

I'm a big fan of his movies, but between his failure to stick to a release schedule, and the fact that his comic characters tend to sound more like Kevin Smith characters than themselves, I can't be excited about this.
  • I am pretty excited about this. Both Kevin and Walt are HUGE comic fans (particularly of Batman) as you can tell from, among other things, SModcast (where Walt has guested). Kevin is an established writer and I really enjoyed his Quiver and Sounds of Violence story lines for the Green Arrow. I have not read his Daredevil or Spiderman runs, but I've heard good things. Walt has also (somewhat) established himself as an artist (see "War of the Undead"). As long as the deadlines are met, it'll be an enjoyable run.

Can't you guys find another picture of Kevin Smith?
  • Oh Kevin, you just want Chris Nolan to pick him for the 3rd Batman movie.
  • Well, he did end up writing parts of the last Die Hard movie though I think the Nolan brothers have that angle covered fairly well.
