I Am Prequel?

During Comic Con, filmmaker Francis Lawrence revealed to Shock Till You Drop that he is thinking of making a prequel to the Will Smith sci-fi thriller I Am Legend.

“Yes, yes, absolutely, we’re actually trying to crack that, Francis told Shock. “We’re trying to figure out some ideas for it.”

The original film has made over $580 million worldwide, and who knows how much on home video. Even Smith’s recent critically slammed Superhero comedy Hancock went on to gross over $380 million worldwide. And Lawrence believes that Smith would reprise his role of Dr. Robert Neville for the prequel, which would pretty much guarantee a green light. I mean, if you ran Warner Bros, would you say no to guaranteed money?

But the real question is, would an I Am Legend prequel have a story that is worth telling. I thought Legend was one half a great movie, and one half a bad movie. The elements I liked involved Smith alone in a post apocalyptic New York. The parts I hated were the more scientific elements of the plot and the entire third act. It seems to me that a prequel would be more of the latter, but who knows… The first film focused on a character who had already figured everything out, knew to stay indoors before dark and was hardened by the whole experience. It might be interesting to watch the moment where everything went wrong, and see how Smith’s character had to adapt to the changes, and the mistakes he made along the way.

This movie was a waste of a good book.

I rather have Lawence do a Constantine sequel/prequel. But I admit, I think a prequel to I Am Legend would be interesting between the span of the outbreak and the first film. I don't, I still think it's unnecessary.

i just rewatched this the other day & its a great film, i have no problems with the changes from the book. i'd love to see the neville character again, and how he came to be so 'on top of his game'.

    Great? You're officially on crack.

Outbreak, ABC's Birdflu, The Stand and the Andromeda strain, enough allready with the bio-outbreaks allready.
Get original Hellywood or just kiss my fracken white ass !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly with the release of this film all I heard was how the book was so much better and diffrent it was. People need to shut it about the changes because the book stands on its own and so does the movie. I've read the first STORY of the I Am Legend book and had I imagined it as a film (complete true to the story) then I would be disappointed.

For me the movie was able to prove that it could stand on its own as a Sci-Fi/Horror flick and thats what I was hoping for when I went in watching this movie. So I say go ahead and make the prequel, we'll see how it does when it comes out.

    790,

But very few films have done this theme well. 28 Days Later was great in that regard. But IAL sucked giant nuts. This is the first film where the CG literally ruined most every aspect of the "creatures" found in the original story. I couldn't take those rubbery looking videogame characters seriously. That bubblegum cliche ending with the "butterfly" was really, really, bad.

It did beat my "I, Robot has the worst CG in a film so far" comment.

Good points Cap. as usual, but its a preqeul to a reboot of a remake.
There's been like 10 remake films planned in the last month, shit I'm 40 I've seen this shit a million different ways, its done. !!!!!!!
The creative world is better than this, these hollywood motards just keep drinking there own piss and calling it wine, Will Smith dosnt make it taste any better. 8-P
Ah no disrespect Captain,,,, its been a shit day. I have to work with these crapheads, some days its a bleak light at the end of the tunnel.

I would love to see a prequel... better than a sequel, right?

IAL was great at first view (the IMAX factor probably did that), and most of it holds up fairly well in retrospect. Which means some of it completely collapses, of course. It's still a 7/10 movie.

    WELCOME TO ERF

    790,

No need for an apology. We all have those days plenty of times. I sometimes wish I could live in a world where punching people in the throat gets me a check.

My girlfreind tells me all the time that I am "special". I know she means the Olympic kind. But I'll take anything.

The parts I hated were how it wasn't I Am Legend but they called it that and nobody much minded cause Will Smith has too many fans. I'm not sure how or why, since he's never made a good movie, but that's Hollywood. I guess July 2009 will see another stupid Will Smith movie.
  • 790
    Right on Arch,,,
Follow the money, Will Smith is the new Tom Cruise........
  • Jamie
Fuck prequel. Bring back Smith's character as a clone or a half-zombie half-human.

Whatever. No one cares. I can't even remember how the film ended since I've since I saw both endings and they're mixed up in my head.

Lol, yeah I picked up "I am Ledgend", up used on dvd, watched it up until the dog died and then paused it got a beer and fell asleep. I never went back and watched the end, and I was ok with that ,,,,,,,
  • wow a precuel ? Let’s interesting. "I am legend" I liked, but I don’t think it appropiate make other movie

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking I Am Legend is a horror film, and they walk away disappointed. In reality it is more inclined to the exploration of the human condition - precisely what the book is about as well. Sure the ending didn't make sense, but the rest was absolutely brilliant. Even the production design was excellent - it paid great attention to detail.

The DVD/blu-ray with the alternate ending should not be missed. It greatly improves the film and makes the entire thing more coherent.
  • I think this is such a great idea. That last movie, I don’t care what anyone says, was one of the best movies I had ever seen. Yes, the ending was disappointing (even the alternate ending), however the greatness of the rest of the movie made up for that.

If they were to make a prequel movie this is the general idea I would implement: Start off with more details on how the virus started and spread, then continue onward and show everyone turning into “zombies” (as I guess they should be called). And show Dr. Robet Neville (Will Smith) do what he has to do to survive and how he manages to go three years without being killed.

It’s as simple as that in my mind, but I’m sure there will be plenty to it. I’m really hoping for this, so I’ve got my fingers crossed on this one.

Possible plot of the prequel in this web: www.tublogdecine.com,

I have to admit that there were parts of I Am Legend that I enjoyed. These were the parts at the beginning, where we see Smith all crazy and alone. I thought that was so well done and then... ZOMBIES!!! Argh, that combined with the ending just made it utterly horrible for me... There was so much potential for a great piece there. Reflections on the result of isolation post apocalypse, you know? I miss that. If the prequel were to focus on these aspects and explore how he managed to develop his methods of coping it could be quite good. Of course they're not going to do that because they're a bunch of pooh headed people going "Will Smith needs to blow shit up!" Stupid Hollywood :P

    @Captain Awesome - YOU HAVE GIRLFRIEND??!!! I don't believe you :P
  • matt
actually the movie came first, then the book, thats y it has pictures smartstuff
  • matt
or you just have never seen it
  • matt
honestly i think will smith did a great job. i saw it on my birthday with my girlfriend and we loved it. i dont think a prequel is necessary because they did a good job explaining the backround but i would like to see a sequel to the film following the alternate ending which i thot was better than the chosen ending.
    just my opinion
