As a special treat for Comic Con attendees, creator Tim Kring joined the entire Heroes cast onstage with a metal briefcase handcuffed to his wrist, and proceeded to pull out a burned DVD with the handwritten text “Heroes Volume III (Episode One)” written on it. This could only mean one thing, and as the lights dimmed, fans erupted in applause.

For those, like myself, who found the second season of Heroes to have been incredibly weak but with a small handful of redeeming qualities toward the end, you’ll be happy to know that for the most part things do seem like they’ll be getting better. Whereas last season’s premiere was both dull and uninvolving, volume three kicks off immediately with an onslaught of new developments that are sure to keep viewers on their toes. Not all of them are entirely successful though, partially because the dialogue and execution are way too cheesy in a number of instances, and partially because some of the newly introduced subplots are just plain dumb.

If you’re not interested in having the first episode of the season spoiled for you, you should stop reading now.

The episode starts off four year into the future, with a scarred Peter running for his very life. He enters a building and finds Claire waiting for him, holding a gun to his head. She tries to shoot him, but he slows down time and evades the bullet by simply walking out of its path. Then he grabs her gun and jumps through time to the present. Now we’re back to where season two ended, with Nathan being shot by an unknown assailant. As it turns out, “Future Peter” is that unknown assailant.

Nathan gets taken to the hospital, but the wounds are too severe and he dies… for about five minutes. His pale lifeless body jumps up on the hospital bed. The experience of dying and coming back to life makes him rethink his purpose, and instead of continuing what he started by announcing to the world about people like him, he comes to the realization that they exist to serve God’s will.

Later on, Angela Petrelli confronts “Future Peter” about changing the future for the worse.

Meanwhile, Claire finds herself attacked by Sylar, who captures her and splits her head open. We then see Sylar examining Claire’s exposed brain. A mildly concious Claire asks “Are you gonna eat it?” “Am I gonna eat it? That’s disgusting, Claire.” Soon afterward, Sylar locates the necessary part of Claire’s mind with his powers. He looks down and a wound on his stomach starts to heal. Claire is confused, wondering why he doesn’t kill her. “You’re not like the others, Claire. You can’t die. And now, neither can I.”

On the other side of the world, Hiro is the head of his father’s company and has all the money anyone could ever ask for, yet still feels left without a purpose. Before he can dwell on it for too long though, he receives a video tape of his late father explaining to him he must protect a world-altering secret that’s hidden within a safe in the office, and must not ever open it. Unwilling to listen to reason, Hiro opens the safe anyway, much to Ando’s chagrin. Inside is another tape of his father, this time yelling at Hiro for opening the safe. He then explains that the safe contains half of a formula that must never get in the wrong hands.

Moments later, the paper vanishes from Hiro’s hand. He stops time as fast as he can, and notices this lengthy red blur traveling through the office. He follows it all the way through the building until it connects to a blond girl, who he soon finds out isn’t actually frozen in time. His power has no effect on her. In order to get away, she punches him and speeds out of the building. Needing to get the formula back, Hiro travels to the future and sees “Future Hiro” battling Ando, who demands he give back the formula. Unwilling to do so, “Future Ando” blasts “Furure Hiro” with red bolts of electricity. Hiro quickly travels back to the present.

The last character subplot involves Mohinder and Maya. Maya gets upset that Mohinder wants to leave, and when her powers start to take effect, Mohinder realizes how people get their powers: through the adrenal gland. He then figures out how to replicate the abilities in other people, later deciding to inject himself with it, causing him to lose conciousness. As he wakes up, two muggers try to rob him. He grab one of their guns and bends it in half, and then throws one of the guys halfway across the street. The other mugger takes off without a second thought, while Mohinder stands there amazed at what he just did.

As much as I like where the storylines with Sylar, Hiro, and Peter are heading, I really dislike what they’ve done with Mohinder. It was bad enough when they made it so that Claire’s blood could revive anyone simply by injecting it (thus removing any tension about whether or not certain characters would survive), but now it’s even worse. Within a single episode, two powerless characters have been either given powers or shown having powers. What do you guys think? Is this a bad move, or do you like the prospect of any normal individual being able to gain superpowers on the show?

The first season owned my ass and made me love Heroes with this weird fan boy passion I have never had. I liked star wars, I enjoy comics, I can watch star trek..but I never had that fervor that I see people on the Internet have for certain things. I finally had it for Heroes, I was totally hooked. They pretty much killed all my love and excitement. I didn't care about going on websites and talking about it. I was so angry with every decision and direction that characters took. Even when a funny/cute/inside little scene came on, I couldn't enjoy it, because of how upset I was.

After reading the review for the first episode, I think I can finally convince myself it's not going to improve next week. I can find something else on Monday's to watch. Thanks slash films, for finally killing the tiny burning ember of hope I had for Heroes.

Second season was terrible. Hopefully the third will be much better, but this whole 'Future Peter', 'Future Ando' bullshit is just a stretch too far. Seems like a cheap excuse to be able to pull the characters in whatever direction they want.
  • I found something special with the evolution aspect of Heroes, now they are just cheating that by giving injections.

Overall the episode sounds fast paced an a lot gets shown but it also sounds like it has lost the appeal that the first season had. As much as I appreciate Adam's write-up, it's only one opinion and mine may be different. I won't know however until I see it in September.

    I love Heroes anyways.

i wish sylar would just die, that bug-fuck. i dont really care about mohinder at this point. i like how peter shot nathan. VERY nice twist. idk why angie calls him and sez "youve opened pandora's box" everything else just seems kinda premature.

    kip. ur a drama queen.

Hopfully people will come to see this season that even at it's best heroes is still mediocre,
  • Garko
    Peter,
You might wanna put the spoilers "after the jump" just to avoid people from missing your line about them and reading on. Probably would save alot of bitching about you ruining it! Just a suggestion.

Heroes was really a fun show right up until the season 1 finale. Where they completely lost me on their final scene. When nothing at all made sense. Claire should have just put a bullet in about to go Nuke Pete. He would have been fine. Why Nathan had to take him flying I have no idea. They never regained my loyalty.
  • Sauce
I tried to like the show, I really did. But the sub-par acting and rancid dialog just turned me off so badly. Not to mention the fact that Jumping the Shark seems to be a weekly ritual.
  • Kaboodle Monster
Agreed J'osh. Essentially they've just made way too many bad desisions to the point it's hard to make anything make sense in the world they created. It's so frustrating since I, like many others, adored the first season.

the problem with this show is that it's too large of a scope. having an extinction level event every season is just stupid. if they wanted to be successful, they need to zoom in and make the storylines more personal, and focused. an ELE stretched over 3 or 4 seasons would've been much better.

funny how kring ripped on lost in an old rolling stone interview, yet lost is doing exactly what it takes to be successful for more than one year.

Loved Season One, hated Season Two, realized Season One was losing quality around the half-way point and that it was good that I stopped watching after Season 2 Episode 5.

I might Tivo this and give the series one last chance.

    @andy

that's the thing, I am not with anything else. This stupid show hooked into me, and made me one. I just don't understand why they can't figure out why season one worked so well. It's not like a remake where they just don't have the right mix or chemistry in the cast, it was two years ago! The best episodes of season two were the episodes when all the heroes were drawn together and had to interact and work together. It seems like Kring is determined to keep them spread throughout the country and far apart from each other

    Lost > Heroes
  • @orange cinema: I totally agree with you on the point of implementing more character-driven storylines to the show. I mean, the whole race-against-the-bomb plot worked in Season 1, but I think the show needs to actualize the potential of some of these characters backstories, much like, say, "Lost."
  • Alan Geiss
dude I think it's an ok move. But i hate that they come up with these sub plots with the stupidest shit. Like Hiro being a clumsy bastard and losing the formula. Claire fighting peter. Everybody on that show eventually always hates each other in the future. It's getting pretty stupid.
  • Alan Geiss
    @ ben franklin

dude i totally agree, I hate all this futute bullshit. It doesnt even show what happened for the to become that way. Im sure they could have worked things out. everytime they go into the future someone turned evil, its fucking rediculus.
  • Joe Newman
love heroes; will enjoy watching it most likely no matter what

Though I am getting tired of always going into the future

the best is the Heroes drinking game:

anytime a character begins a speech/monologue in an aggressive determined voice, then slowly let's it crawl to a dramatic whisper - you drink.

any scene with the Bennet family requires a designated driver to take you from the couch to your bed.

Here's the problem, season 2 had too many storylines and characters. They have said that orginally they would have a revolving door of characters and that the public got too attached to the characters that they couldn't do that anymore. I think that they were so stuck on that idea that they tried to add more characters without thinking of how it would turn out. Plus season 2 was only half way over so no one knows how they could of turned it around.

With season 3, they have already said the main characters will be in a lot more scenes together. I have mixed reactions about normal people being able to get powers but it does add a whole different aspect now. And we finally know how Sylar gets his powers.

I don't know how people are saying season 3 will be bad off one review.
  • Ft. Awsome
Well I think of my self as a fan, I mean the second season was just plain dumb, so when I read the review I was happy to read nothing about the Mexican chick and or Nickey or who ever the hell she is. Also the characters who just need to die are Mika, Nickey and Mexican-Girl-Twin, and Mika's cousin, who has a lame power. Mohender geting a power is a tad bit far-fetched, there should be a consequence like he dies or is dying. Ando having a power......... I don't know how I feel about that.
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
I was there. New season might have potential... but so many problems... (SPOILERS)

They showed the last online episode which of course was complete garbage. So horribly written. But alright,
the first problem with the season is the opposite problem with last season. Whereas 2 moved too slow, this is moving way too fast. Any sort of development of characters and story went so quickly it just seemed stupid and cheesy.

Another problem, again I guess related to the speed of the pace, was the acting. If you rush everything, you give the actors shitty lines, and they WILL say those lines as good as they can get, which equals garbage. The only really good line was Sylar's eating brain's comment.

Another obvious mistake was bringing back Ali Larter, and even Nathan Patrelli. If no one dies, there is absolutely NO fear and no dread.

It was retarded of future-Peter to put present-Peter in a cell next to Claire's dad, but I guess that will lead to them breaking out. Besides, if Peter was so powerful, why couldn't he just use his powers to escape?

What else... Oh, the Hiro stuff in the office sucked balls. How lame do you have to get: "I don't want to just sit here and wait for my destiny!" *knock on door* Someone hands Hiro a package. "He says this package is a message from my father, and it is my destiny!"
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH

OOps, sorry, I wasn't sure it was going to get posted, sorry if there are multiple posts!
  • Toaster27
Yea, just like others have stated, season one was huge and i couldnt wait for the next episode. then season 2 came along and everything started falling apart, and even worse is their decisions to can the rest of season 2, I know they are planning of having a few of the un-aired episodes on the dvd set, and trying to recap at the beginnning of season 3, but I still feel this is a cheap trick and see this show going down in flames.
  • cib3k
Mark my words: season 3 will suck just as much as season 2 did. Kring is a hack. His main contribution was coming up with the idea for the show - which wasn't that original to begin with. Now, based on the mess that was season 2, it seems he really doesn't know what to do with it.

The first season was so great due to the involvement of Bryan Fueller (Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies). The show got really interesting after Fueller was brought in and started to suck as soon as he left. It's easy to see who was the creative mind behind it. So, unfortunately, unless they find some other talented writers, season 3 is doomed from the start.
  • Rachel Summers
    I still can't wait.
  • Jenbot
You're ridiculous man, how is Season 2 weak? I'ts great, and it ended on a great note. Season 3 is gonna rock... and I believe it's Siloh
  • TheDaftPunk
Wow. Sylar gets Claire's powers!? Wtf. How does Sylar find her, and why was nobody protecting her? I guess nobody cared about saving the cheerleader anymore. He was hard enough to kill without the healing ability, Hiro obviously just had the right powers to get close to him and stab him (unfortunately, not fatally). How did Sylar even lose his powers? It was never explained (Stabbed? That's it?) - Oh but Claire's blood is a cure all, even for lost powers. Eh, I dunno. Obviously Sylar getting Claire's powers bothers me a lot. Meh, we'll see.
  • death star
Heroes and everthing on tv sucks. The TV shows suck because they have to hold back. Only movies, and now HBO, have become dominant. Plus who gained any knowledge from watch a sitcom?
  • Go Goya
Kip wrote, "It seems like Kring is determined to keep them spread throughout the country and far apart from each other."

This is done intentionally. If you've got any kind of story (cinema, television or even in a book) that has multiple storylines following several characters the inherent desire on the part of the viewer or reader is to see them all interact. We want to see these characters get together and do amazing things and all the anxiety and tension for the viewer is based on that desire.

Keeping them spread apart allows that tension and anxiety to build and then they can finally give us a taste of it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself - but when you have too many contrivances in order to execute on that it becomes a bit ridiculous.

It's the old...we just saved the world from disaster XYZ and even though it makes perfect sense for us to travel together, I am going to go back to my country alone...why? So that it's more dramatic when we reunite in the next movie.
  • some_dude
Sylar losing his powers was explained at the beginning of season two. It was the company that was using an experimental treatment to remove special abilities and he was in the middle of some south american forest being monitored by the electricity chick ... Elle

I really lost hope for this series during season two and from the sounds of it they are making some really bad plot choices like Mohinder getting powers .. he was cool because he was the genius without powers, so many ways to take that characters and instead the just default to the cheese log
  • Man in Corner
For the most part you all are trolls! It sad enough that you feel the need to bash the new season even though it hasnt really aired yet. You have NO idea what direction the show will go now with all this new stuff happening. I can gaurantee that the show is going to be different than season one (sorry Kip, its true) But saying "i wish it was like season one..." is like being one of those sad 12 y/o fan boys who hate the sequals to thier favorite moives because it's "different". Don't be naive, just watch the show if you like it or don't watch it if you hate it.
  • Man in Corner
Oh and btw, Lost is terrible. Sorry couldn't help it, hope that angers some ppl.
  • J6
I was so stoked to hear the heroes season 2 was coming out to dvd because i haven't seen the whole season but after preordering and seeing a few more episodes on the nbc web site, I realized that I BASICALLY SEEN THE WHOLE SEASON! I was very disappointed with the length of the season compared to the first even knowing that the writers strike fucked that up. I'm gonna cancel the preorder and just get the first season.
As for the 3rd volume...I like the idea that they relieved the boundary of natural selection (as it's always been told throughout the show) and make it possible for anyone to have powers but it's going to diminish the uniqueness of all the characters. Plus how are they going to define a humans power after taking this "injection"? Also Mohinder bending a gun? LAME! It's gonna backfire. I guarantee it.
  • J6
another note...I will lose my respect for the show when they decide to fuck up peter, Hiro, Sylar, and parkmans story. i could care less about the others. And if it doesn't turn out like x men 3.
  • chuckd
Heroes was a great show with a unique storyline that turned into utter trash. The writers are bad, the plot keeps getting worse and the direction of the show is a mess. It seems like they assembled a bunch of hacks from the writing world and tried to make it into something.

This type of show could be a huge success with the right people, but heroes is almost guranteed to fail b/c people like me, who love superhero type shows, are not going to be watching. There is no point is supporting this junk and if I'm not watching....who is?

The season 3 opening sounds like more trash which will no doubt be followed by even stinkier trash. I'm pretty much done with the show after reading the opening episode spoiler. I see Hayden having plenty of time to save dolphins in the future.
  • AARON
I think thats its a pretty good twist for the show. some of you guys are pretty petty with your views. i like the fact that they are making more villans. it should be pretty cool.
  • Herokiller
Hi! I think volume one was the only heroes. This second volume was not good. Becouse:

    1) In volume one, the heroes (I mean people with special abilities) could use their abilities after they got an injecion from the company's special serum. In volume two... well, I don't think Takezo Kensei got any special serum injections in the 17th century.
    2) Syler and Maya met accidentally. Oh, I don't know what you think about such things, but I don't like 'em. I like to start thinking after episodes, asking questions like "what if...?". I like such accidents in stories building to the accidents (so if the fiction of the current story is the accident). So I don't like this part of the story.
    3) Was niki inflected by the Shanti when she went to save the young movement-copier girl? If so, why couldn't she get out of the burning house, if not, how did she beat the gangster with the gun there.
    4) I agree that it was a bad move to make Clair's blood such intensive.
    5) And the last problem: Why did the company put Syler away from the headquarters. He cold never get out of there (unless somebody would help him, and I don't think anyone would help him). Moreover, they could've killed him.

In conclusion, as perfectly theymade volume one, so imperfectly they made volume two. What do you think?
