MGM has confirmed that Darren Aronofsky will direct the upcoming Robocop sequel/reboot. David Self (Road to Perdition) is tapped to write a script, which is rumored to take place in “Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program.” Phoenix Pictures’ co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites say it will be “an entertaining and provocative film,” which might be a stab at rumors of a possible PG-13 version. People forget that before the Dark Knight and Batman Begins, Nolan was like Aronofsky: an auteur with artistic visions he played out in Memento. This could be a promising gig for Aronofsky.

It occurs to me that often auteur directors have trouble financing their visions, and perhaps DA is making this move so that he’ll have a hit which would allow him to continue on making more difficult to make movies. It wouldn’t be the first time an auteur has done this.

Aronofsky’s a good director so this definitely adds some hope that this won’t be bad. I just can’t see Robocop not being R, the extreme violence is one of the reasons I love it. If it manages to capture the kind of humor the original had then I guess that’ll make up for it.

i’m well aware of what he’s done in the past, and while i did forget about the fighter, i never said sci-fi was bad. i just hoped ANOTHER re-imagined adaptation of a remake comic book 80’s reboot wouldn’t come from one of our best. i know this film will be a good pg-13 venture, but i’m in the minority of those who want to see completely new ideas, because there are so many of the others being pumped out.

Am I the only one confused over how Los Angeles can “reinstate” a program that Detroit created? Is there going to be a scene where a 8 foot wooden create with OCP stenciled onto it is coming off a freight ship? :P

The original RoboCop was both original and risky. I doubt Aronofsky would sign on—though I’m sure the paycheck is nice—if he didn’t have incredible plans and vision for this property.

When did sci-fi become a bad thing? Even PTA has said in the past that he wouldn’t mind giving a Terminator sequel a shot. I guess it’s too bad McG is busy, he could shoot this movie into outer space as well. We’ll settle for the guy who made the sci-fi indie thriller Pi.

There’s plenty left to be done with RoboCop and its themes for the Oughts. Aronofsky wanted to direct Batman, how is this any different? Keep in mind that he has The Wrestler due before this, and probably The Fighter afterwards.

i’m still totally not sold on this. while it might be a step forward for the genre, i think it’s a huge step backwards for DA. we have enough of these movies being made, and DA is one of the few i’d hope would continue making original or risky films.
