When the teaser poster for the comic book adaptation Witchblade was released in May (right), we reported that Michael Rymer was attached to direct and today it was confirmed. Rymer most notably produced and directed a large batch of Battlestar Galactica episodes, which gives him enough cachet with geeks to forgive his feature 2002 effort, Queen of the Damned (that vampire movie with Aaliyah). I always imagined someone like McG or Simon West helming this cyber-cleavage flick, but geekier is better.

The lead actress has not been chosen—the teaser poster from Top Cow Productions simply used a Jessica Alba facsimile to get you hyped! One of the rare female superheroes headed to the big screen, the character is a “specially chosen female who comes into possession of a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers called the Witchblade. The jewel-encrusted gauntlet gives the wearer extraordinary powers.” I guess it’s better than marrying a bald guy for his money or talking about handies with a 50-year-old SJP. TV vet Everett De Roche (Cybergirl, Parallax, Stingers, Flipper ‘95) wrote the script.

Discuss: Is Rymer a nice choice for Witchblade? And what actress has the qualifications to pull this role off? Yancy Butler fans, please sum up your collective thoughts in a single comment, thanks.

I've never heard of Witchblade, but if it can be a cooler version of Bloodrayne, which at least had a hottie, i'll watch it
  • Joe
I vote Megan Fox for Witchblade.

Let's just hope we don't get Jessica Alba o Angelina Jolie. Which I think would be a good choice, but is too overexposed.

Sorry to be pedant, but Queen of the Damned was 2002, based on the IMDB link you provided. I just knew it sounded wrong because it seemed like a longer ago that Aaliyah died.
  • Eddie
Yeah maybe megan fox but i dont know about her acting skills i prefer her for her "physical" skills! xD

And it would be nice to see angie on the big screen with another female heroin.

And NOOOOO jessica alba.....She Cant ACt or do anything besides shut her mouth and move her body!

as long as there is sex and nudity ;)

the withcblade TV episodes was too TV friendly.
The anime version was a bit promising but still can't beat the comic version.

    & now, movie version? ...hmmm..
frankly, i wish they did Gen-13..
  • Jacobo
Lena Headey would be a good one if she wasn't already Sarah Connor.
  • I've seen the anime and the tv series, so a movie sounds cool.

I didn't mind 'Queen of the Damned' (i own it even) and BSG is alright in my book. So I hope Rymer does well.

As for the main lead....hmmm.....maybe Shannon Sossaymon from Rules of Attraction? I'd rather an unknown. That could be really interesting.

Witchblade oozes sexuality. So no big names, because there'll be no nudity. Maybe Maggie Q or an athletic new comer.

Hum i kinda liked the tv series it was an ok series!
as for the movie i hope its going to rock!
  • Cast Beauty
    Cheryl Cole/Tweedy...
Looks the part, has a beautiful accent -
Her or step it up -and cast for the perfect look Alessandra Ambrosio.

    I prefer Cheryl.
Forget the Manga - Manga is everyone and no one.
Look at Turners drawings - Sara is supposed to be Ultra Sexy... sexier than Wonderwoman, Lois Lane...Catwoman etc.

Turner created one of the most beautiful girls in comic book history.
Yancy butler was wrong then -and is wrong now.
This move needs an Ultra beauty.
  • Maybe Shannon Sossyamon as the lead? But I think it'd be far more interesting to cast an unknown. Who knows, maybe Shannon still qualifies?

I loved the Top Cow anime and dabbled in the TNT series, so a movie is welcomed by me.
