news now

On Thursday we told you that 4,591 Internet Movie Database users had rated The Dark Knight a 9.7 out of 10 (or a 9.0 out of 10 from regular IMDb voters), good enough for the #4 spot on the top 250 movies of all time list. We expected the film to slide down a few slots as a larger sample of votes came in. We were wrong.

It’s now Saturday night, and with 19,000 more votes counted, the film has propelled into the coveted #1 spot! Of course, The Dark Knight is expected to slide down the list as more and more votes are added to the average, but it’s worth noting this almost unprecedented accomplishment.

The top spot has been held by The Godfather since sometime in the late 1990’s (this late 1996 capture of the chart from the early days of IMDb shows Star Wars in the top slot). As far as I can tell, no film has unseated The Godfather from the top spot in the last decade. The last film to get even close was The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which got a high as the #2 in 2004. Return of the King currently sits comfortably at #14.

I just saw that it was #1 a second ago, I have already been to the theater and seen it 3 times. Once at the IMAX

  2. Gravatar

Nanananananananana….BATMAN! I still havent seen it, For some reason with the 7 million plus population in the dfw metroplex we only have 1 Imax in a ghetto part of dallas and its sold out until like Thursday….

  3. Gravatar

They say The Godfather was #1 since 1999. 1999!!!

  4. Gravatar

Would a link to the actual page not be a wonderful thing to have in this article?

  5. Gravatar

    Introduce a little anarchy……..

  6. Gravatar

THAT ISD BULLCRAP!!!!!!!!!!! THIS MOVIE WAS NOT BETTER THAT THE GODFATHER OR STAR WARS V!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS PEOPLE ARE JUST OVERHYPED!!!!!! IN A COUPLE OF DAYS THEY WILL REALIZE THIS AND THE DARK KNIGHT WILL DROP TO LIKE # 5 OR 6!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU’LL SEE!!!!!! YOU’LL ALL SEE!!!!!!!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Gravatar

Congratulations to everyone involved in the making of this film. My fiancee and I were lucky enough to slide in to an Imax showing here in Halifax, NS, buying our tickets only 20 minutes before showtime.

By the time we left the theatre, they had sold out every other showing for the rest of the day.

This film is nothing less than a masterpiece, and it deserves to unseat the Godfather, even if only for a while. I predict it will remain in the top ten permanently, if not the top five.

  8. Gravatar

    omg please stop this madness
this is getting out of hand. without internet this movie would just have 8 something rating at most.

  9. Gravatar

Like IMDb is a really hard-to-find website..

  10. Gravatar

The dark knight makes the Godfather look like Gigli.

  11. Gravatar

    To Starblazer101:

The movie will most definitely slide down the list. I doubt that the thousands of jealous Godfather, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction fans (etc) will let the Dark Knight stay at #1.

Of course, jealous fans of movies that are in the top 10-20 will be jealous of how The Dark Knight has bested their favorite movies.

These lifeless losers will be spending the next few weeks making multiple accounts and constantly voting the movie 1/10. Believe me, these people will make it their life’s mission to find anyway possible to lower The Dark Knight’s ratings.

I’m pretty sure that YOU are doing everything in your power to lower The Dark Knight’s ratings.

Nevertheless, The Dark Knight has won.

It has dethroned The Godfather as the #1 IMDB movie of all time, if only for a couple of days. NO OTHER movie has EVER done that. AND, in record breaking time.

    UNPRECEDENTED.

  12. Gravatar

while The Dark Knight is an incredible film and is worthy of being noted as one of the best films of the decade, IMDB users tend to give movies either a 1 or a 10.

  13. Gravatar

Me: Not true, if you look at a movie with a high sample of votes like The Godfather, you will see that about 40% of the entries are 2-9. And if you look at a film that isn’t in the top 250, for example, Bee Movie (6.4/10), only 15% of the votes are a 1 or 10.

  14. Gravatar

“This time the mob has just gone too far”

“No, the internet went too far and made them desperate. And in their desperation they turned to a film they didn’t fully understand. Some movies just don’t play by other film’s rules. Some movies can’t be neglected. Some films just want to make the world burn with happiness.”

No but in all seriousness this film doesn’t deserve to even be in the top ten. It’s an awesome movie, but aside from Ledger’s Joker, far from one of the best of all time.

  15. Gravatar

It’s also worth noting I think Return of the King deserved the #1 spot.
    Just my personal opinion.

  16. Gravatar

    It’s simple: KILL THE GODFATHER!

  17. Gravatar

I disagree, Return of the King is overrated, and definitely not a perfect film. It’s too long. I can think of probably three scenes in the third act alone which would have been better suited on the cutting room floor.

  18. Gravatar

I hope this sets a trend or at least sends a message to studios that they should let these super hero movies be more serious and not totally driven for children.

This is great news though, but this is going to start a spark of hate for the movie. Yes this movie has been geeked over at nauseum, but for once almost EVER it was well deserved. But that wont stop people from hating the movie for the mere fact that a lot of us love it.

  19. Gravatar

“A Better Class of Criminal” = moron

  20. Gravatar

Return of the King was awesome I think it should be in top 10 but the third act did have problems especially with the 15 different endings it had.

  21. Gravatar

    @ P. Ross

To have your vote counted on the Top 250, you need to have cast around 1200 other ratings. Kinda prevent the fake account business.

  22. Gravatar

I imagine this only happened as the fans rushed out to see it immediately on release and loved it. I think this will go down a tad after non-fans see it.

  23. Gravatar

    Superman.

    Wakka! Wakka! Wakka!

  24. Gravatar

it’ll stay in the top 20.

  25. Gravatar

not sure if dark knight is a better film than the godfather especially godfather part 2 but it was a fantstic film.

I assume it made the number 1 spot due to the HUGE fanbas and hysteria over the film.

  26. Gravatar

    @ddog:

Isn’t that the great part about IMDB? Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes use the professional critics ratings, but IMDB lets fans vote. No, I do not think that The Dark Knight is better than The Godfather, Part II (it may be better than Part I, I’m still undecided), but fans have (thus far) found it more entertaining. As a fellow fan, I would certainly look to IMDB just as much if not more than Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes because it is people just like me voting, not someone whose job it is to review movies. I therefore expect to get a view of the film from an entertainment side, rather than a technical side, from IMDB, which is what most (but certainly not all) fans are ultimately looking for.

  27. Gravatar

I have to admit that I’m one of the many of thousand of people to blame because of this. I voted 10 for TDK. I rarely ever do vote 10 for anything, actually, I think I’ve done that twice in my entire life and none of those occasion were movies before (video games). It was not my intention to give it a 10, because I know it doesn’t deserve it, but I was not going to give it a 9 because it doesn’t deserve either. I was planning on giving it something around 9.6 and 9.8, but as you all know, that is not possible in IMDB, so I gave it what was the closest to it.

I honestly think most people were in my situation and it is not that we were going into IMDB like crazy trying to surpass The Godfather purposely, which in my opinion is a better film than TDK. I still think that TDK deserves a place at least in the top 20 of all time.

And as for you haters, keep hating, so that your heart will burn on flame! I do not understand why the @#$% you people feel the need to hate, but do as you please. At least I’m not the one pissed when I should be celebrating like everybody else for the masterpiece that we were able to watch.

  28. Gravatar

Overall this has been the best movie experience I’ve ever had: from casting/viral/hype/Internet/to release.

It absolutely is better than star wars, and peter is right bout ROTK being overrated, plus fellowship is a far better film.

We watch & study films as much if not more than critics & academy voters, so I’ll take our opinion over any other - this film IS that good. I think some are just gunshy to declare modern films as classic.

  29. Gravatar

    @ matty hc

Amen. This film is SUCH an acheivment, targeted directly at us, yet there are still bitchy little fucks who will always complain about something - even a gift like TDK. Its its irritating as hell, but as you said, let em do as they please. if theyre not happy with this, they never will be.

  30. Gravatar

Wow Haters! I encourage you to keep doing the great job. I was just checking the IMDB ratings and you guys voting 1/10 (A.K.A. The Envious Haters) are in 4th place already! With 1.7 % of the votes and 402 votes (Sat 19/07/08)

I congratulate you! Keep the great work, maybe by the end of the week TDK will be #2 and maybe in 5 years, if you keep going everyday and voting from every computer that you have access to, you can make TDK #10.

Keep it up guys! Do not quit!

  31. Gravatar

I don’t know much about movies or critics but I feel critics look for art and world/moral issues first and then entertainment value second. Thats why I love IMDB its about the fans and they tend to be more about entertainment first and art and value second. Atleast the average person. Thats why I think TDK should be #1 Godfather 1 and 2 were great but they lacked action. What also puzzles me how Godfather and Shawshank are up there in the first place. Because when you ask a normal average person what there favorite movie is they tend to say something like the Matrix, LOTR, Star Wars, Kill Bill or something of that nature. But, I guess critics and fans alike can say TDK.

  32. Gravatar

agree with orange cinema, this was by far the best movie experience i’ve ever had. i could only hope that another film will have half the viral/hype/quality that The Dark Knight has.

  33. Gravatar

    @ Adam

How old are you and the people that you hang out with?

  34. Gravatar

    in my lifetime that is.

  35. Gravatar

Well Im 20 that might have something to do with it haha. But, I think Im representative of an average person. Most of the people here seem like educated people, but they also seem like movies are there life and analyze to much (thats the difference). And, the people I hang out with are people go see movies to relieve stress and entertain after a hard week at college. Like Hancock (which i thought was all right good for a Dvd rental). And considering it has made almost 400 million worldwide I don’t think I am wrong.

  36. Gravatar

I honestly hope that this will change the way people think about movies. Especially the Acadamy, because now they can’t ignore it. Best Picture nomination? I’d like to see it - and see it win.

  37. Gravatar

What kind if list is this, they don’t even have No Country up there. There is no doubt that The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year, so far. That’s undisputable, but i don’t think it was good to the point where it actually dethroned The Godfather. I think it’s just the hype but in a couple of weeks, when people start to calm down, it probably fall down to #5 or 6. That’s my opinion.

  38. Gravatar

I find it funny that while I do love Godfather 1 and 2. That anytime a film like this gets lots of recognition and praise. It’s due to “fanboyism”, Because it’s “impossible” to genuinely be really appreciative about this film’s design itself.

The fanboy remark wipes the slate of anyone voicing their opinion of why this film was great to begin with.

  39. Gravatar

    @ Captain Awesome

Totally agree. Is it that Comics it’s just a mere joke and money maker to Hollywood and everybody else? It is kind of the same way a lot of people perceive video games a being childish and not as what it is a form of entertainment as it is. I seriously hope they start taking this genre a little more seriously and actually admit that this can be good art and not just a money maker!

  40. Gravatar

    Wow.

  41. Gravatar

What a joke! Everyone who has ever been on the IMDB nows that the rankings are seriously distorted by the nerds, the very same nerds who — with their love of cartoon movies — have destroyed the market for film. I am extremely unimpressed.

  42. Gravatar

This picture hasn’t even been out one week, and the fanboys are saying it has revolutionized cinema? Hey — KILLED cinema is more like it. For a person whose nervous system hasn’t been perverted into an addiction to overstimulation by video games and parent & teacher-induced behavior-moderating drugs, these video-game/comic book movies are seen for what they are: trash and the death of the cinema,

  43. Gravatar

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring was actually number 1 for a think a day when it first came out. Dark Knight will definitly be in the top 50 films if not at least in the top 25. Everything just came together with this movie. The only thing that scaries me and excites me if they do make a 3rd film. Is how are they going to top this movie. Nolan definitly put everything in this film. Im just not sure what villian out of Batman’s rogue’s gallery they can use to top or equal the Joker. To me there is just no way. But im hoping that I will be surprised and that in 3 years they will have a third film that really blows me away like this one. Its been 2 days since I saw it and just can not get images from that film out of my head. Just that last few mins and knowing what has happened the last 2hr 30mins left me with such a high. And was I the only one who thought of the movie “Shane” when Gordon’s son was crying out for Batman to “come back!”?

  44. Gravatar

Yeh this will be hard to top. But I think if anyone can do it it is Nolan. I picture a sinister Riddler played by Daniel Day Lewis

  45. Gravatar

You may not agree with the placement of certain films on the IMDB Top 250 but referring to the the list as being “soooooo bad” is just, well… ignorant.

  46. Gravatar

How is it ignorant? Because I’ve seen thousands of movies and realize that a list composed of one movie older than 50 years is BS? You are an idiot if you think this list is good.

  47. Gravatar

Well the list is not perfect but it is good. Its based on fans opinions. Not career movie watchers. Second yes maybe the list doesn’t contain older movies and that is because as time goes by people tend to watch new movies and not old black and white even though they might be good they do not reflect views of the general public. People tend to watch what is out at the time or what is shown on tv/rented. Not something that is made in the 30s even though it good. IMDB is for fans. Rotten tomatoes and ect is for critics.

  48. Gravatar

    To Sean:

Please elaborate WHY you think this list is stupid?

Because the top ten only has one movie that is 50 years old? A movie doesn’t have to be 50 years old to be a classic.

I admit, I would put more classic 40’s/50’s movies in the top ten, but that’s not to say that it’s wrong to have more recent movies topping the list.

For instance, I wouldn’t disagree if someone were to put 1999’s “The Matrix” as their top 10 movie of all time. Even though it’s something I wouldn’t do, I wouldn’t consider it absurd. The movie is tremendously influential, inventive, enjoyable and thoughtful.

…which is the exact same reasoning anyone would have for calling Casablanca, Seven Samurai or Citizen Kane a classic movie…or for any accepted classic movie.

…Oh, and in case you haven’t seen the other 240 entries in the list, there are 25 movies in that list that come from the 1940’s and 38 movies that come from the 1950’s.

Even very recent movies like “WALL-E”, “The Bourne Ultimatum” or “There Will Be Blood” would be considered modern day classics of their genres and of film making in general.

We don’t need to wait 40-50 years for a movie to be considered a classic.

  49. Gravatar

I definitely remember Lord of the Rings: Fellowship becoming #1, and I think Two Towers and Return did so too.

  50. Gravatar

I think Shawshank has unseated Godfather once before.

  51. Gravatar

Sometimes I wonder what’s the point of comparing all these different flicks with one another for best film spot. They’re all different genres of film that reach out to a different set of audiences. Everyone has their subjective view. For me I really like The Dark Knight and I really like the Godfather but I won’t say that one is better than the other, the most I’d say is that one was better for different reasons and that’s that.

  52. Gravatar

I wonder in what place TDK will end.

  53. Gravatar

Potato is right. You know I learned something today, we shouldn’t watch movies just to compare them and and debate about which one is better or worse because nobody ever wins. We should watch movies to appreciate their unique differences and to be entertained. When I go watch a movie I don’t pay 10 bucks to criticize it’s flaws, I pay to enjoy whatever it is that makes that movie great. The recent spoof movies like Date Movie or Meet The Spartans are perfect examples, when you where all watching them you were all most likely laughing and enjoying all the things that things that made it great but as soon as that curtains were down and you walked out of that room you all started to trash it and calling it the worst pile of crap you have ever seen. Sure the acting and the scripts were terrible but that’s the point of those movies, that’s why they’re called spoof movies. The Dark Knight was a great movie and so was The Godfather, but I can’t say which one is better. I refuse to compare them because they are both great in their own unique way, and that’s what being an American is all about. God Bless us all.

  54. Gravatar

    Potato,

of course that’s what it boils down to. But I’m also sick of people not being able to just praise a film now a days. I mean this is the point of most forums or threads in a site like this.

If there was a /Film when the Godfather 2 hit the screen. We would have the same amont of opinions and discussion.

  55. Gravatar

Well, now I just have more proff that TDK is the best movie ever.

  56. Gravatar

    To El-Barto,
Why is it that anytime I ask someone around here to tell me if they liked Wall-E or Dark Knight better they just tell me you can’t compare movies of such different genres? They already do that and it’s called the Oscars.

  57. Gravatar

That’s not saying very much. Those same dolts voted Pulp Fiction #6. It shouldn’t be in the top 200.

Dark Knight might well be one of the best, but the judgment of this list is in question…

  58. Gravatar

evergreen. you must have not seen many movies to declare the dark knight the best ever. sure it is one of the best this decade, but it does not compare to the shashank redemption and the godfather in my opinion.

  59. Gravatar

    To P Ross:

The Matrix isn’t that inventive. I mean didn’t Gondry invent bullet time in one of his music videos?

And I guess a good indicator of why this list is awful is because LOTR is higher than Goodfellas. Come on, please stop defending this crappy list. It looks like a bunch of 13 year olds made it.

  60. Gravatar

    To Sean:

I’m not trying to fight you. I agree that there are a lot of choices that are rather stupid.

You know what, I’m not even the type of person to make lists based on popular vote where where the votes of trolls who give movies 1/10 are counted.

(Again, this is just me, but I’ve watched thousands of movies like you, but I would personally NEVER have the heart to give the movie a 1/10, no matter how much I hated it. The lowest I have ever given a movie is a 3 or a 4. Unless it was made by a 10 year old, it can never be that bad).

But even though there are a lot of silly inclusions, this list is pretty much representative of what are the best movies of all time. Pretty much 95% of the entries deserve to be there.

Whether or not you think LOTR is not as good as Goodfellas or likewise, is subjective, because both movies are just as critically acclaimed and popular as the other. Both have won Best Picture :)

PS: You can actually see details as to the age groups of people who voted for each of the entries in the list. Most of them aren’t 13 year olds, so rest assured, this is a good list :)

    Cheers

  61. Gravatar

Who cares? IMDB is an indication of nothing other than populists. It’ll go back down soon enough once people calm down.

  62. Gravatar

this list feels pretty random to my tastes.. i wonder what the best films as voted by people who like voting for best films list looks like.

  63. Gravatar

The IMDB top 250 has been nothing but a popularity contest for quite some time. The Dark Knight will drop down the list over the next few months; generally it’s a good idea to wait a couple months so more people see it and the ratings even out, by which time another new movie will be near the top of the list.

Oh and there have been many films which are modern-day classics being released so far; but it’s generally a good idea to wait until some time other than opening day weekend to see what people think of them.

  64. Gravatar

Pete speaks the truth about The Return of the King. And yeah, there was a time when all three Lord of the Rings films were in the IMDb Top 10 or 12, I believe. As the movies age, and millions watch on DVD, On Demand, etc., there’s a greater range of voting (again, as Pete pointed out with The Godfather).

There’s a rage of fans that may have made up their minds to love The Dark Knight before its release. That’s a cool kind of excitement, but not the most critical approach. Then, when the movie paid off their expectations, boom, #1 on the IMDb.

As for No Country for Old Men, it’s currently #74, but was as high as #18, if I remember correctly. Once again, with time, people watched it who weren’t crazy about it. That’s cool, different tastes, right?

And all film is art, even the commercial stuff, and all art is subjective. Just dig in and love what you will.

  65. Gravatar

Well deserved The Dark Knight is a great achievement. I loved the Godfather both 1 and 2 but they are a bit overrated for me. It is a masterful piece of work. But for me it gots one thing going against it. Entertainment value. It is entertaining don’t get me wrong but in different artful way. Being a drama it lacks action, something The Dark Knight has. It is able to meld many genres together. The maniacal drama mixed with action and superhero complex makes it a epic masterpiece that is not only artful but entertaining. So for me The Dark Knight all the way.

But, it’s just my opinion. Its interesting to see Godfather fanboys against Batman fanboys.

Ill end this with a quote from the joker that goes well with this topic

    - You Introduce a little anarchy… Upset the established order… and everyone loses their minds!

  66. Gravatar

“Whether or not you think LOTR is not as good as Goodfellas or likewise, is subjective, because both movies are just as critically acclaimed and popular as the other. Both have won Best Picture :)”

    Goodfellas didn’t win best picture.

And it’s not a good list. This is: http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_ranking1-100.htm

  67. Gravatar

TDK is NOT the best film ever.

IMDB can no longer be trusted.

    I am uninstalling the internet.

  68. Gravatar

    @ Peter

I was just saying for my personal list, not this list persay.
I feel it was a perfect film for me… I think that’s where these conversations can get off, everything we talk about is completely objective. Ultimately it’s up to each individual to decide what the best/worst films are and whether it lives up to their standard.

    @ Brian

    Brian=Erroneus

    Look it up.

  69. Gravatar

    I meant subjective, not objective.

God I had no sleep last night.

  70. Gravatar

    @ Bob

Thanks for assuming I haven’t seen many movies.

  71. Gravatar

I haven’t seen TDK yet. But knowing Christopher Nolan’s work I am sure it’ll be a good movie.

However, you can be assured as soon as it launches in Europe the average rating will go down automatically, like it always does. Simply because Europeans don’t get over-excited that easy, just like they don’t use words like “awesome, fantastic, amazing” all the time…

  72. Gravatar

outrageous! lets be realistic here people. The Godfather is epic. Comparing one great performance (Heath Ledger) to several great performances is a reach. This will drop and it deserves to.

  73. Gravatar

still hasn’t dropped. 40 thousand more votes, and still sitting comfortably atop the throne.

  74. Gravatar

Maybe it’s a conflict between generations. Go to the site and take a look at the demographic breakdowns for each movie. Very young people love TDK knight, but have some trouble connecting with Godfather.

  75. Gravatar

Don’t know about the Godfather movies (I actually haven’t seen them), but I personally think The Dark Knight is better than the original Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, and about as good as The Empire Strikes Back.

  76. Gravatar

I hate when ppl compare old ass movies to new ones when they forget the reason they are “great” is because of their influence on movies as we know them today. Star wars was great because it took movies and philosophy to the next level and special effects to another level that was never seen before…so now you compare a movie made 30 years later and say “Empire strikes back wasn’t better than the dark knight” Moron!. That’s like saying that a movie in the year 2038 is better than the dark knight. Duh! it better bet , but the dark knight might have influenced it in some way because that is what all great films do…Citizen Kane is considered the greatest movie of all time…not because it’s a good movie , but because of how it used cameras and shadows and dialogue that before it…..had never been done before. Se7en was better than psycho from 1962…but psycho opened the window. So stop comparing old movies to new ones dummies!

  77. Gravatar

The Dark Knight is a great movie and my be the best movie ever, but it’s to hard to tell at this point. Also the LOTR trilogy is getting ripped off here. Let’s not forget it won 11 Oscars for Return of the King and should have won best picture for all 3 films. To grade these films fairly you can’t look at age. Some people have burned into there brains that Godfather can’t be beat, while others go with whats ever big know. If I have to pick right know I would choose LOTR, my deciding factor of picking LOTR over The Godfather is that the Godfather movies only got worse and worse. While LOTR all 3 films are even with people picking and choosing there favorite. But anyway the people who believe The Dark Knight is the best movie ever are unintelligent as well as the people who think it’s not the best movie ever. Without a doubt it’s up in the top ten and probably one of the best in there.

  78. Gravatar

Well, TDK has finally been knocked off the #1 spot by The Shawshank Redemption.

But the fact of the matter is, it has stayed there for three weeks. So all your LOTR arguments about Return of The King having made #1 for one day obsolete.

We all knew TDK was going down eventually anyways…

  79. Gravatar

I can’t believe it got there to begin with. I’m sorry, but the movie sucks ass. Aside from Heath’s and Aaron’s performance, it’s got to be some of the sloppiest writing ever written. Why everyone is eating this BS up I don’t know but it’s not better than half the movies on the top 250. No, I’m not such a fan of those movies that merely having it bumped is irritating, but that it’s being bumped for this POS.

Uh, so the Joker doesn’t get fingerprinted, they never take off the face paint, Batman works in a garage now?, can Batman himself be less interesting?, and what the hell happened in the first hour? (couldn’t stop yawning)… Then there’s the nerdy guy on TV that says he knows who Batman really is, but that goes absolutely nowhere. Come on, how hard is it to realize that it would take a billionaire to afford his own personal, state-of-the-art, custom tank? - The ferry boats. Nobody noticed the THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF FLAMMABLE LIQUID IN THE ENGINE ROOMS?! Come on! Not only that, it’s a huge departure from the main action to a bunch of random, unknown characters late in the story that served no previous purpose and then just ended… Next time cram a thousand damn stories into the plot and maybe you can win the Pulitzer Prize for Best movie ever made and maybe they can have a statue erected in Nolan’s honor.

I’m surrounded by fools. Is this the kind of movie you want to set precedence? Do you people honestly want movies riddled with plot holes, that have practically NO character development that just THROWS in little subplots here and there then just abandons them? I swear if this wins for best picture or best screen play I will never, for the rest of my life, EVER, watch the Academy awards. I’m already disappointed that viewers are ignorant enough to lap this stuff up, but this over-hype is going WAY too far.

i’ve been an out spoken fan on just about every movie on probably the top 100, if not at least 85 percent of them, and i can tell you that honestly i have always said that the godfather triology was the greatest of all time, with marlon brando doing the greatest performance tat could be expected from any actor from any generation, cotton swabs in his mouth the entire time, he was able to capture america and make us root for the bad guy through compasion, but i was wrong, heath ledger brought us to a laughing, sick tormented look at evil that i believe will not be surpassed for some time, i found myself sitting like a little kid in awe watching the performance of a lifetime, the tragedy is that we wont get to see it again, it will just be a imitation. but isn’t it ironic that across the spectrum in evil, and agruably the two best bad guys of all time were both mummbling with cotton swabs in there mouths the entire time. you don’t have to be a fan of batman to be taken in by the performance that heath ledger puts forth in his version of the joker, it’s sad that the young actor ad to leave this world at such a young age, and when he was just reaching his prime, but what a way to go, leaving at the top, his performance will out live any of us putting our two cents in!!!!
