Not so too great special effects.

BIG THANKS to zack snyder, for doing everything possible to give us the most literal adaptation of watchmen possible. he’s giving us a 3+hour film, the black freighter, under the hood, and images/scenes ripped straight from moore and gibbons book. i cannot understand those who will still complain.
watchmen & transformers 2 are making 2009 rock already.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Ugh. I love the Watchmen Graphic Novel and I’ll keep it to that. Zack and WB won’t be getting a dime from me for this abortion.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
My brain is humping the inside of my skull this very second.
Snyder you slick son of a bitch. You’re making me believe more and more.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
I also love in that picture of the young Comedian how the colors resemble the colors found in the comic. I love how Snyder is really going nuts with the details here.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I just started reading the Watchmen and wow… all I can say is that they picked some damn good scenes to release. I’m so stoked to see this now.
July 18th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
duca,
I envy you. I would love to have those fresh eyes and brain again. Like when I first read this series years ago.
July 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
@ Duca - I was fortunate enough to have read the book upon it’s original monthly release way back when…and it is STILL a work that ranks with the best in comics in particular, and storytelling in general. You’re in for quite a treat!
@ everyone who’s bitching -Detractors are mainly just over-protective of a work that most feel ‘can never ever’ be translated, or represented through a two hour film. For the most part, it can’t. Snyder however is offering a damn faithful interpretation, and I applaud his vision and faithfulness to the material. Give it a chance, I say.
At the very least it will be a better effort than other attempts at adapting Alan Moore’s work…UGH!
July 18th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Goobity,
Definitely. Though I will state that V For Vendetta was beautiful realized on screen. But thats really the first Moore material to be done that well. And from the looks of it, Snyder plans to do the same here and knock it out of the park with ferocity.
Also Silk Spectre II is fucking hot.
July 18th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
This christmas… everyone in my family getting a copy of the watchmen from me. Including grandma.
July 18th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
I’m not overprotective of the work, I just think Zack Snyder needs to stick to music videos. That seems to be his forte. The guy can put together a good montage of action to a song (ala 300 trailer, this trailer) but the actual film itself was very, very, weak. Also, based on interviews with him (especially the recent EW one) I really don’t think he has a grasp on the characters and what the book was actually about. And every Zack Snyder film is full of one dimensional, cardboard characters and very bad actors. This film is stock full of D-list actors. When Billy Crudup (aka Mr. Mastercard) get’s top billing you’ve got trouble. And he won’t even be lending his chops that much either. A CGI figure that looks like it was modeled by a DeVry student will be stepping in for him most of the film. Watchmen, the book, actually has minimal action and is mostly consistant of dialogue, I see a big problem in the hiring of wooden actors. This is an ensemble film and should have been casted accordingly.
July 18th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
@ Captain Awesome - I agree, they get better as we go along. After From Hell and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V was better…but not better ENOUGH, I guess. If there’s one comics writer who deserves the grand treatment, it’s Moore.
We’ll agree to leave Swamp Thing out of this…?
July 18th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
@SUe - Snyder wouldn’t be my first choice to helm this project by any means. Or even my tenth. Yet Dave Gibbons supports his efforts, so I will too. Snyder does in fact seem to ‘get the work’. Go here….http://rss.warnerbros.com/watchmen/
Also, we’re still eight months out. The CGI in the teaser isn’t what will ultimately appear in the final film. As far as the acting, let’s wait for some scenes that display some to judge it, no?

“A CGI figure that looks like it was modeled by a DeVry student will be stepping in for him most of the film.”
The film is a whole year away. They had to put this trailer together to play with TDK. The effects are still being worked on.
July 18th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Yes, let’s leave Swamp Thing out of this. I totally forgot From Hell. Which I thought was excellent.
LXG was abysmal though :(
July 18th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Wow, if you think this is an “abysmal” adaptation, you have to get your brain rearranged.
Looks excellent, from a fanboy who read it last September, and then bugged everyone he knew to read it.
July 19th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Malin Ackerman is hot. That is all.
Well, actually, that’s not all, as this IS the film adaptation of Watchmen, after all. But… it’s still the morning, and my mind can only focus on one thing at at time right now :)
July 19th, 2008 at 2:08 am
@ sue
“d-list actors”… go to imdbpro & look these folks up before you say dumb shit like that. oscar winners & golden globe nominees are far from d.
July 19th, 2008 at 2:12 am
plus if you really knew the source material, you’d know haley’s rorschach is our lead… that’s the d-list best supporting actor from little children - oh wait, there’s another d-lister from that film in here somewhere. holy shit, billy crudup was in big fish and almost famous, what pieces of shit those were.
July 19th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
sue talking out of his ass as usual. It’s always rather entertaining.
July 19th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Can someone tell me what’s the name of the song in the trailer? I know it’s Smashing Pumpkins from the 90’s. Maybe off of Siamese Dream?
July 19th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Dan,
“The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning”.
It’s not a bad song. Just has a really stupid name.
July 19th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
am I the only one that thinks it’s weird that the twin towers are still present in new york when the ship emerges from the water?
or is it pre-9/11?
July 20th, 2008 at 5:50 am
pre 9/11=yes
it takes place in an alternate 1985
btw i was watching the trailer, frame by frame, and rorshach was using VEIDT in that picture idk, just a little tidbit to know haha
July 20th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Woah dejavu. Wasn’t this article and these “new” pics posted already???
And did I mention that this thing looks way too cg heavy? And the characters all look laughable? and the music in the trailer was gay?
July 20th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
@Sue
WWWWHHHHHAAAAA?!!!!?
Really? Is this movie going to be as terrible as a fetus being killed?
I think you just like going against the grain…to each their own I suppose.
I can’t wait to see this movie, I’d rather Snyder make it than anyone else, for instance a watchmen movie by anyone else would have pissed me off. Snyder’s loyal adaptation of 300 is proof enough that he cares more about the source material than most other film-makers that adapt other I.P.’s
July 20th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Jerry,
Is Dane Cook your idol?
July 20th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
@Jerry Crack Corn
I guess you think the characters from the original would have looked less-laughable?
Too CG heavy? How else would they make a blue 200 foot man destroying people in a vietnamese battle? How else would they make the Owl ship shoot from under the ocean? How else would they de-atomize a man? Oh I forgot…practical effects.
I guess you can call the Smashing Pumpkins gay, or one of the more influential rock bands of the 90’s….

D-List actors and bad actors aren’t the same thing. Is Carla Gugino a huge star? No. Will she do a great job? Yes. Ditto Patrick Wilson, Billy Crudup and Jackie Earle Haley. I’m glad there are no name actors in this movie. Who needs to see a huge star in a role to make sure the character is well-done? Remember when nobody knew who Hugh Jackman was?
