This is so exciting! I really could use a remake of Monster Squad.. I never was able to figure out the whole "alucarD" thing the first time. Plus, I thought it was very creative to have a creepy old guy that somehow knew how to deal with monsters. Also their Dracula was very originally portrayed by an excellent actor. The fact that it was nothing like a Goonies ripoff was just icing on the cake.. 10 stars!

Do you think that in the new version they'll kick the Wolfman in the? oh nevermind..

Wait, I got it.. All kidding aside. If the new monster squad were all very gay--that would be an excellent movie!

Wow, thanks for reading this. I feel like I am making friends.

I think I am going to be ill! Another example of someone with no imagination trying to remake a film that was pretty good already, and thinking that his vision is better.

I don't know what Cohen was thinking...or obviously not thinking...but this is something that fills me with horror. Horror for the memory of the original which I still enjoy watching.

I agree with Jaxin...it'd be worse than kicking Wolfman in the nards.

In fact, considering how recent 'epic horror' films like VAN HELSING and the MUMMY movies came out (yes, I an one of those who can't stand them and what they did to the classic creatures), I already have a horrible vision of what this one will be if it is allowed to come to pass. What made it work, the combination of the classic nightmares, the touch of innocence and the exciting sequences will be hyped up to appeal to today's audiences that seem to want razzle-dazzle special effects of action sequences in stead of plot and, in many cases, good acting.

I could go on...and probably would if I didn't tell myself WHOA!!!... but I think I've made my feelings clear. Cohen will go on with this project, even if does read whatever negative response comes up.

Those are my thoughts on the subject. Thanks for the use of the crypt.

Anyone who thinks that Rob Cohen is a good director or that Dragonheart was all it could be should talk to the screenwriter, Chuck Pogue. The man has nothing but bilious venom for Cohen for raping and massacring what would have been his swan song.

Cohen should only be allowed near movies that are so bad even Brett Ratner won't touch them.

Vlad,

Doesn't what you describe as a good movie to remake describe Monster Squad? It was a box office and critical failure when it was released in 1987. It has become a cult hit since I guess.

I saw Fred Dekker intro/Q&A a screening of Monster Squad, and he's grateful, but ultimately bittersweet towards its current cult popularity ("where were you people 20 years ago?"). After Monster Squad's box office failure, he had difficulty finding work, and his next big project, Robocop 3, killed his career.

So, if Dekker is in any way involved with this remake, I'm all for it because it would literally save his career (actually, I'd be for it either way - the "remakes raped my childhood" argument is getting tedious). And he did mention at that Q&A he had a project in the pipeline (I think for Paramount), so maybe?

If not, and the remake is a hit, he'll probably explode. Literally. Poor guy.

xXx was a great movie. fuck this site and anyone who says other wise. seriously, sam jackson says 'this is the part where I put a gun to your head and ask you to do what I want. but your not the type of guy thats afraid of death." thats fucking character development assholes. Vin Desil saying 'i live for this shit' and then getting thrown out of a plane? shitty? no no no my freinds. I mean the guy can fucking somehow jump a motorcycle 30 feet in the air, shoot his ak, and kick a dude with gold teeth in the face. How is that a bad movie? oh is it because its fucking retarded? yeah well you may have a point there.

Anyway, Monster squad was a staple in my house whilst growing up. If wolfman's nards arent discussed in a remake, if little kids arent smoking and questioning eachothers sexual oreintations, if there isnt a scary german guy, if... well I still don't see why this needs to be remade. Couldnt they just update everyone's clothing using CGI, maybe give Shawn on of those stupid emo swoop haircuts to make him more hip and then release it?

xXx rules, fuck you.

I don't get the remake thing. Is it just that the people footing the bills in Hollywood think they can make a quick buck due to the association with the original film? Or is it that the writers just aren't coming up with anything original and good? It's sickening, really.

If you're going to remake movies, why not remake movies that weren't received well but have good bones? There are a million movies/books/stories out there with great potential that either weren't marketed correctly, were poorly done or are just unknown to your target audiences. I thought directors were supposed to have vision!!

Hunter Stephenson,

Why do I need to get a clue? It clearly wasn't a classic because it was a box office smash. It didn't even make $4 million at the box office. It definitely wasn't a critical success (It has a 53% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). It doesn't even have a lot of high general public ratings. On Box Office Mojo, it got a B- user grade. On IMDB, users gave it a 6.9 star rating. Only on Amazon did it get great user reviews with 5 stars.

I guess I am a little old for the Monster Squad since I was already in high school when it came out, but I don't see anyone putting this movie in other classic kids movies.

I gotta agree with Mark. Don't pillage the classics, go scavenger on the crap. Michael Mann turned his own TV movie Crimewave (aka LA Takedown) into Heat. I think very few people would say that was a bad decision.

Some filmmakers have sidestepped the remake of a classic by basing it on the original novel such as "The Last Man On Earth/Omega Man/ I Am Legend" or "Manhunter/ Red Dragon"

Remaking classics like Casablanca or Citizen Kane are completely unforgivable. But cult classics like Logan's Run or Monster Squad don't carry the same weight in everyone's mind. How does a filmmaker determine what's ripe pickings for a remake?
