I’m not a viking movie type of guy, but who is? The international movie trailer for Outlander has hit the interwebs and I can’t tell you how excited I suddenly am to see this flick. I mean, who doesn’t want to see a movie about “vikings teaming with a human alien to take on an alien creature”? Watch the trailer below, and tell me what you think! Am I insane, or could this be a lot of fun?
Plot Synopsis: As an age old battle rages amongst the stars, Kainan’s ship burns brightly as it crashes into the Nordic coast. As his space craft comes to rest in the fjords of ancient Norway, it’s with dismay that Kainan realizes that he wasn’t the only survivor. A second passenger, a Moorwen also emerges from the wreckage. A Fierce and animal-like creature, the Moorwen is intent on causing harm to those it perceives have wronged it. As the Moorwen kills everything in its path, Kainan must work together with the Vikings to destroy the beast before it destroys them all. Starring James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, John Hurt, and Ron Perlman.
The Weinstein Co have yet to announce a U.S. release date for Outlander.

July 11th, 2008 at 11:43 am
So the whole film is at night?
July 11th, 2008 at 11:44 am
I AM a Viking movie type of guy, and I’ve been waiting a long while for this.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Whoa Momma!! Mix 13th Warrior with Predator and a little dash of Reign of Fire and hold on to your battle axe! Count me in! Where the %$^& did this come from and could the movie possibly be as good as that trailer? Ok, probably not, but I’ll see it.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Very Nice i heard Ron Perlman talking about this and looks really good.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:56 am
dude! this looks terrible! you ARE insane!
July 11th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Looks like it could be worth a trip to the theater. Besides, the flow of movies is going to halt come later this year, and I’ll be begging to see something.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
fanboy d: agreed, Peter you lost me on this one LOL
July 11th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Peter, I agree. Where did this movie come from? It looks so insane that it might actually be a lot of fun.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Vikings and Space aliens?! Where do I sign up?
July 11th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
this looks awesome
July 11th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Why are all the Vikings Brittish?
July 11th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
It’ll probably be on dvd a month after it hits theaters, but I’d definitely rent it!
July 11th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Looks adequate if it’s a slow movie week.
Also, I’m all for riding on the coat tails of The Lord Of The Rings, but they should at least have the good grace to spell it correctly (1:06).
July 11th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
jesus fights aliens with futuristic guns AND swords AND vikings?? this is fucking epic, i cant see why anyone wouldnt want to see this
July 11th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
sweet, another “alien” of anglo-saxon descent.
As long as it has dragons.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Peter. Vikings + Aliens /= good film!
You are pretty damn correct that it sounds like a whole load of cheesy fun :)
July 11th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Has there been a good movie about Vikings? And adding aliens? Geez thats just not right. This looks beyond terrible.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
lol Listen to those laser effects at 1:25.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
meh
July 11th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

July 11th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
No. Just no.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
oh come on peter. this is fucking ridiculous
July 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
My gut tells me this won’t hold up well over two hours but the premise alone will probably get my ass in a seat.
Did anyone else get a Brotherhood of the Wolf vibe?
July 11th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
“Am I insane, or could this be a lot of fun?”
I vote for insane.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Awesome sauce!! I’m there for anything with Vikings!!
July 11th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
If this comes out in the depths of January/February, I’ll be there.
It’d definitely be some sweet counter-programming for Valentine’s Day!
July 11th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
dumb. too expensive looking to be cool trash, too serious to be fun. the uninspired soundtrack was quite appropriate for this very, very formulaic piece of — to hell with it. if you like these kind of movies, go ahead and have fun. just don’t look down on people who collect 80s porn on dvd. cause in a way, youa re quite the same. it*’S just not my kind of porn, though.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Nice poster, but the movie looks lame. When they have to advertise “from Lord of the Rings PRODUCER” on the poster… you know there is going to be trouble.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
You’d think they could come up with a better name than OUTLANDISH!
If this ia any basis, we’re all in deep, deep trouble with this one…
July 11th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
oh is this that new tactics rpg?
July 11th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
@big daddy: took the words right outta my mouth.
If this does prove well in the box office, and a sequel is made, they better throw in some ninjas and vampires and maybe some co-symbiotic creatures or something. Outlander has potential, all you nay sayers are brenden frasier fans. ha!
July 11th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I was digging it. Till the short clip with the space ship lasers going “Pew Pew” away (1:25) threw the whole thing off for me. Now it’s just a slight interest. Still looks like a good reign of fire. But you can never know with these things.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Looks like a hell of a lot of fun, I’m in!
July 11th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
EPIC FAIL.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
@menotrouble
Lol. You don’t like it cause it looks expensive? Sorry for laughing but that was the most pretentious and funny comment all day(I’m sure it was unintentional).
Don’t judge the movie’s score just because they used an Immediate Music temp score in their trailer though. Not many movies are that lucky to have the film’s score ready come trailer time. If I judged movie trailers like that I would have expected to see that The Two Towers was about heroine addiction.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I cant wait for this to hit bittorrent. It may suck, but im still gonna give it a try. Vikings and aliens? sign me up
July 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Um…no.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
come on, this looks great. only giant robots and she ninjas would improve it
July 11th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Needs more laser-mounted dinosaurs.
Other than that, looks a like a badass, 300-esque movie.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Is this the sequel to Passion of the Christ? If so I’m in. A space Jesus fighting a dragon with vikings=BIG WIN.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
It looks okay but it doesnt look like it deserves to be on the big screen looks like a straight to dvd kinda movie
July 11th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
I will wait for the DVD.
July 11th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
So Jesuschrist descend from the skies and team up with manly badass motafucka vikings to fight an evil alien force?
awesome
July 11th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
@ Gorman
That’s exactly the movie I thought of when I watched that. The Moorwen even kind of reminds me of the Beast from Brotherhood fo the Wolf
July 11th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
finally, a successor to Battlefield Earth.
July 11th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Well the majority was complaining that movies were not creative with all the remakes and sequels coming out and I can’t think of anything currently being publicized that is more creative…lol. I guess I’m insane as well b/c I’m buying into it :P
July 11th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I knew something was wrong when the big fat viking guy in the beginning did an overdramatic cliché swirling of his swords/axe things to slice off the guy’s head, and the halo 3 like shot of the spaceman walking up to the horizon, that stuff.
July 11th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
“finally, a successor to Battlefield Earth.”
god, lol.
Really, I’m all for Aliens and Vikings, but this looks mediocre
July 11th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
This. Looks. Awful.
Also, so the “alien” can understand 8th century vikings just fine?
July 11th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
if the outer space dude had a chainsaw for a hand and a boomstick, I’d be in.
July 11th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
hahahahaha
July 11th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
When are they ever going to make a movie about Ragnorak? Come on!
/GOB
July 11th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
I don’t know man. I just don’t know. I can barely see the trailer its so dark. I don’t know man , I don’t know.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
this post proves one thing - half of slashfilm readers take themselves way too seriously. come on, guys. there’s nothing wrong with entertainment for entertainment’s sake.
it looks like fun, but when i go to movies, i usually like to see what’s going on. all will be redeemed, however, if there is a dude in it who looks up at the sky dramatically and goes, “BY THE BEARD OF ODIN…”
July 11th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
looks sweet.
and good thing the alien crash landed on a planet that speaks the same language as him! otherwise it might be a little difficult to tell them about the dragon lol
July 11th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
SAME music as they used in the original three-movie teaser for Lord of the Rings back in 2001.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
i am not a fan of viking movies. the 13th warrior was descent. this shows promise it is original and plot line sounds familiar but the whole concept is pretty sweet. I think it will take in $30 million opening weekend just because its a TOTAL guy movie….. vikings, swords, guns, blood, aliens, action what else do you need for a surprise summer hit? I can already say any guy i know will most likely want to see it. Jim Caviezel is in it so its got to be at LEAST descent. I am with you on this 100% Peter. A better trailer involving more of the spaceship/alien scenes to remind the people watching the trailer that its more than just about vikings and i think this will be a surprise blockbuster waiting to happen.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
this looks ambitious but i agree with all who have said EPIC FAIL!
July 12th, 2008 at 5:54 am
this is a win-win to me. Could be so awesomely fun to watch.. or so bad that it’s awesomely fun to watch.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
@ Gorman
“You don’t like it cause it looks expensive? Sorry for laughing but that was the most pretentious and funny comment all day(I’m sure it was unintentional).”
It was not only unintentional, Gorman - it was not what I said. I do have some sympathy for pathetic stuff coming from genre buffs and geeks who try to get their film done. The end-product often takes some goodwill to appreciate - and I am willing to provide it. But not for a big budget studio production.
As to the score - I didn’t judge the soundtrack of the movie, claerly, as I didn’t see the movie (nor will I, ever). Obviously, I was referring to the trailer. And thanks for the information - the fact that it is an overused one kind of proves my point.
That being said, I do appreciate your wisecracking and competence, but you might consider being less self-righteous. Judge movie trailer however you want to. I’ll do the same.
And now: Go and see your cool alien-viking-Jesus-flick, boy. It’s ok.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
caviezel for superman!
July 12th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
This is the most expensive-looking Sci-Fi Channel movie I have ever seen.
July 12th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
this looks awesome lol.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Anyone else notice it says “Lord of the Ring” not “RingS”?
July 13th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
no. but you are right.
on the poster it is written correctly, though.
probably just another case of “trailers are works in progress, do not judge them or I shall be mad at you and laugh at your stupidity” as Gorman would put it. still, quite embarassing.
July 13th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I’m interested. But we’ll see.
July 14th, 2008 at 1:17 am
I’m not the difficult kind, so I’ll probably like this film… I want to be entertained on a rainy night, or simply let my mind wander, so I think I will like this film… Just to let you guys understand how I see things, I saw Eragon and didn’t find it too bad for my tastes, while everyone and there grandma pissed on it… I ain’t dumb, I just ain’t too difficult.
However, I always find it dumb to say “From the producer of…”… I mean, a producer is the one that’ll put the cash on the table, that is it… Saying this, is like saying “Man, I’ll go out with this boy, he has money money money”… Money ain’t everything, and the producer ain’t the one making the film… “From the director of…” “From the writter of…”… hell, even “From the fx team that brought you…” would be better IMO. Saying “From the producer of…” is ultimately stating you have no good writer, no good director, no good cameracrew, no good sound guy, no good photo guy…
July 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
okay - i have to clear some stuff up. Hero is man from space who crash-landed on earth. He speaks the local language because he had a machine that taught him the language. There are NO dragons in the movie, just a monster he inadvertently brought. He says “dragon” because it’s a word Vikings would understand. And - this is not an official trailer. It’s a leak. And no, it doesn’t all take place at night.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:43 am
totally new trailer on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkT4JNS281M
July 15th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I was one of the few who actually enjoyed Pathfinder and 10,000 BC - and this just looks like a step up. It may be crap, but how often do you get a alien-versus-vikings movie? If I want substance I’ll find it somewhere else - this looks like the kind of film where they won’t be nuisanced by plots or being too clever. The only downside for me is if it ends up not being very violent.
On a side note, are people actually complaining that the outlander speaks the same language as the vikings? Um, alien monster tearing ass on ancient warriors - what’s accuracy got to do with it? It made a difference in Pathfinder, but those vikings were the bad guys. Y’know, like Nazis with horned helmets.
July 16th, 2008 at 10:46 am
This looks incredible!
I think it’s brilliant to have a period film that is also a sci-fi creature feature! The second trailer features the voice of Sophia Myles, which makes me think there’s more to the story than the trailer hints at.
I’ll be all over this on when it is released in North America. Please please, let it be soon!!!!!
July 18th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Saw the preview for this film tonite. Amazing! Not just another fantasy special effects film. Great story, non stop twists and suspense. Great characters you really care about! See this film, (even if you’re not a Sci-Fi buff!!!!)
August 29th, 2008 at 7:45 am
This is looking to become an awesome viking movie! Just as 13th Warrior was an excellent movie, this has potential to be good as well. But there has been a good amount of poor viking movies as well. Thanks!
