The movie trailer for the big screen video game adaptation of Max Payne is now online at filmweb. Thanks to /Film reader Michal S for the tip. I’m really impressed by the visual stylings of director John Moore who seemed to capture the slow-motion action sequences, including Mark Wahlberg’s slow motion dive which is ripped directly from the game. Looks promising.
The story follows Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg), a former NYPD Detective with internal and external conflicts in a dark, sinister New York City. Three years after the murder of his newborn daughter and wife by a group of junkies, Max is now undercover agent in the DEA and embedded in the Punchinello Mafia family. The video game series is known for its Matrix-like bullet-time, graphic violence and profanity. The movie will hit theaters on October 17th 2008.
Discuss: What do you think of the Max Payne movie trailer?

July 10th, 2008 at 2:45 am
ill wait for the unrated dvd
July 10th, 2008 at 2:59 am
I liked the game, but what makes this different from any other revenge films? Ala the Punisher
July 10th, 2008 at 3:17 am
Well that looked crap
July 10th, 2008 at 3:40 am
What’s with the winged creature(s)? I don’t remember seeing those in the games.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:01 am
hahahahahaha
July 10th, 2008 at 4:02 am
Way better than I was expecting. Don’t know wtf those winged things are though.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:07 am
I think it looks visually promising if nothing else. Although, that story does have potential.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:08 am
Looks good be interesting to see what the reviews come in for it are like.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:10 am
Exactly what Tom said. Visually it looks way better than I thought it would look but what the hell are those winged things? They weren’t in the video game…
July 10th, 2008 at 4:12 am
WOW!!! this looks dope as hell i mean it reminds me of the game so much except for the creatures hopefully they’ll explain those in the movie and mark wahlberg looks like he’s gonna be bad ass in it
July 10th, 2008 at 4:23 am
this looks pretty bad ass.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:26 am
It’s a good bet that the winged creatures are a dream sequence as dreams played part in the game.
Let’s hope, at least.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:31 am
If you all remember, in the game there were those episodes when Max was in dream/hallucination state, maybe they replaced those moments with those dark angels…, but I guess that remains to be seeen. Anyway, it looks surprisingly well, they really played the game it seems, and they got in the spirit of it. Can’t wait to see it!
July 10th, 2008 at 4:39 am
doesnt look as bad as I thought it would be
July 10th, 2008 at 4:50 am
have to say this looks pretty good. But will the film live up to the trailer, well i guess we’ll have to wait and see.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:57 am
One word: CRAP.
July 10th, 2008 at 4:58 am
The winged demons aren’t real… they represent the faith hes lost. His wife and baby child were murdered.
Maybe he has dreams or visions of demons. He imagine that demons take his family because of some drug or whatever. But this can’t be another “Constatine” flick.
Here is a quote from the Video Game:
Max Payne: Valkyr had been meant to be a white-winged maiden that would lift you to a warrior’s heaven. But it turned out to be a one-way demon ride to hell. The devil was in the drug. I knew. I had met him.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:03 am
Reminds me of the game a LOT, which is a good thing!
Except for the angels/demons bit, which as others have pointed out, propably are part of his dream/nightmare/halucination sequences…
Even mona sax looks like the part…
Also guys, please place it in the context of the genre…its a movie based on a video game, don’t be expecting citizen kane in there…
As long as it has nice visuals and lots of cool ass kickery, i’ll welcome it…
Overall looks pretty nice so far!
July 10th, 2008 at 5:27 am
Game was rated M, movie is going to be rated PG-13 and Marky Mark says there will be nothing to put in an unrated because they are filming a PG-13 movie. Based on that. I believe it will suck. Play the game again instead.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:49 am
the link doesn’t work anymore
but it’s still here http://www.filmweb.pl/PREMIERA++Pierwszy+zwiastun+do+%22Maxa+Payne%27a%22!,News,id=44411
July 10th, 2008 at 5:57 am
I just hope that creatures are some kind of hallucination or something. That would explain a lot since Max Payne was also drugged with the Valkyr designer drug. But it looks promising.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:58 am
@Rocha: Max Payne was never really brutal, so i guess that the movie would work, even PG-13.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:36 am
Winged creatures = Angels of death? (i.e. scene in the hallway with all of them, I’ll bet they’re attached or representing Payne’s bullets right before they hit targets)
I like the drugged idea as you were constantly popping pills in the game.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:51 am
So…no walking on blood in the movie then?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:51 am
PG-13? There goes all the grit that made the game so good. Oh well, just another videogame adaptation afterall.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:12 am
I kinda hope this movie falls on it’s face–Fox sent a cease and desist letter to some college students who had been shooting a Max Payne fan film for three years. They were almost done, and I guess that worried the studio that their $100 flick might overshadow Marky Mark; I wrote about it a few weeks ago over at fancinematoday; use the search function and you’ll find it.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:30 am
I worked on this movie. Very little blood.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Would’ve been a whole lot nicer had the ‘Congratulations: You won a free prize!” banner ad not been playing its obnoxious notification bleep on the /film index page.
I’m pleasantly surprised, though.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:45 am
Sorry for that… but filmweb blew it.
They deleted the trailer from their site ;]
so you can watch it on youtube: http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bh1kD66Oo8
or here (good quality): http://hatak.pl/zwiastuny/215/MaxPaynepierwszytrailer/
July 10th, 2008 at 8:10 am
The movie is not working! Argggh!
July 10th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Can you download a patch for the movie to make it Rated R?
July 10th, 2008 at 8:48 am
If the movie trailer does not work at the link provided then you can always find it on youtube:
Look for: May Payne Movie Trailer.
It doesn’t look that bad, it looks pretty noir.
July 10th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Concur with all that’s been said expect for the trolls.
July 10th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I’m still waiting for a decent video game-based movie, maybe this’ll be it. I just ordered the game after seeing the trailer, maybe the movie’ll be halfway decent, who knows?
July 10th, 2008 at 9:47 am
I have to say im dissapointed. I felt it was really cliche your average shooting action movie, like hitman or something. Except there was those devil angel things, what was that all about? I’ll probobly watch it unless someone sees it before me and chages my mind by telling me how rediculous it was.
July 10th, 2008 at 9:52 am
i forgot to add, why PG-13? It’s a M rated game with loads of blood. Did they think fans would be satisfied with PG-13? Come on Hollywood. You think they would have learned by now to stop making shitty moves like that. They just want money is what it seems like but I dont know what im talking about its just my opinion, if someone can explain please do.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Watch the trailer with Sir Mix-A-Lot’s, “Baby Got Back” playing. It actually makes it better.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Ah….fuckin’ hollywood. This actually looks somewhat interesting, but Max Panye it is not. I’ll watch it, definitely, but I’m just a little disappointed.
July 10th, 2008 at 11:00 am
I was really hoping they’d stick to the game storyline. But whoever is being discussed “You know that feeling you got when you ran past the graveyard as a kid? Stay away from this guy” sounds like Satan or something.
I’d like to hope the demons are just dream visuals, but aside from Mona Sax none of the other characters or descriptions seemed like they were from the game. I have a bad feeling this is just going to be like Constantine, but with an IP I actually care about….
July 10th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Its looking good I know its only a trailer and its hard to judge
July 10th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I think it actually looks pretty cool. Cool visuals and camera angles. We’ll see.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Looks better than what I expected. But I just don’t understand the casting choice. Marky Mark has his moments, but there has to be a dozen other b-list actors better suited for the role. Personally, I think Dean Winters would have been awesome, but he probably wouldn’t have been a big enough name, I guess.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I dont see what people have against Dirk Digglers casting. I think he’s perfect for the role
July 10th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I agree that it does keep the feel of the game (at least, this trailer does). Really curious what those winged gargoyle things are (hopefully part of a dream/hallucination).
Is it too late to get Michael C. Hall? I don’t think I’ll ever buy Wahlberg as May Payne.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I liked it!! That was pretty good…. The Dark wing creature looked cool as heck. The Trailer is better then I thought, but I would like to see more bullet time. The Graphics looks very good!!
July 10th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
It looks like Mark Walberg is staying true to the character. Which is a really good thing. Even though they don’t look alike, I think Mark Walberg is a excellent choice for Max Payne :)
I thought he did a excellent job in “Shooter” he is a very good actor.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Looked nice
July 10th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
ok i went on the website so i can see what the hell the winged things are and found the synopsis of the movie thats on the site. ” Based on the legendary, hard-hitting interactive video game, Max Payne tells the story of a maverick cop determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murders of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmare journey into the dark underworld.” ok…i was thinking that that was like some….kind of meanig and not literal but then i read the next part , ” As the mystery deepens, Max (Mark Wahlberg) is forced to battle enemies BEYOND THE NATURAL WORLD and face an unthinkable betrayal.” ok….so maybe this is saying that those winged creatures might be real? and not some other meaning like dreams or something
July 10th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
http://www.maxpaynethemovie.com/
heres the website, check for yourselves
July 10th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Looks decent. Not terrible, not excellent.
July 10th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
At least they kept that and the voiceovers =D
I hope they still put somehow the “graphic novel” moments.
July 10th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
im not familiar with the game so can some one tell me if this is some sort of supernatural type game (those wing ppl)
July 10th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
This needs to be an R rating or above, otherwise it just wont be the same. That is what made the game so good, was the blood and the darkness of the people and scenes. Oh well I guess you take your kiddies to it. Then after that they can go to their friends house and play GTA4!@
July 10th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Ruben the wing things are not real they are part of max mind on drugs and dream stuff.
July 10th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
You really think the wings aren’t real huh…
July 10th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
reminds me of The Crow for some odd reason.
maybe its those winged things flying around.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I’m sure the Angles are Max’s victims… I can’t wait this looks like the shit.
July 11th, 2008 at 8:52 am
The winged things are nordic Valkyries, and Valkyr is the drug in the movie. The writers of the game were Finnish, so there are a lot of Nordic elements through out them, it only makes sense that they are in the movie. If I wanted the exact story from the games, I would play the games.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I like the fact that the trailer actually resembles the game and gives hope that the entire movie will too. Since I’m partial to Manson, the music pulled me in too.
July 11th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Never played the game but this trailer looks great. The music is badass and I’ve never seen a bad Marky Mark film. Maybe Apes but he was the best part.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
PG-13 isn’t always a bad thing. Hitman got an R rating and look how bad that turned out. I think they should have followed the Max Payne 2 story.
July 12th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Erm, the Max Payne 2 Story wouldn’t work without the Max Payne 1 Story.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
PG-13? The trailer looks like the movie is going towards an R rating.
Any official word that Max Payne will be rated PG-13?
July 12th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Yeh id say this looks pretty good. Probably not as good as the games, because they are simply unbeatable. Those winged creatures are probably valkryies, the winged maidens that carry slain heroes off to valhalla. The games are full of Nordic imagery, the drug called Valkyr, the government agency called Valhalla, the Aesir co-operation, agent Baldur, and the neverending snowstorm, and the nightclub called Ragnarok. Dont know how much will be kept in the film, but the Valkyries can probably only be seen because the crminals keep shooting up on Valkyr which gives you pretty crazy hallucinations. But yeh i am a huge max payne fan and im probably looking more forward to this film thatn any others out there, including the dark knight!
July 12th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
they can always tell the first story in flashback but that might get a bit convoluted I guess.
July 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
great movie!. is that sucre, from Prison break? wow. cool!
July 13th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
The winged creatures look like the Shinigami from Death Note.
Great anime people! Kira shall judge mankind!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:29 am
“Matrix like” ???? I believe it INTRODUCED bullet time. And Matrix Followed.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
i like it mark walberg its veri good actor ( shooter in my 100 films )
john moor films i like behind enemi lines
but i like sexual scene in max payne ……… have or no ???
July 19th, 2008 at 2:18 am
if you read the fourth draft max payne script its online, those winged creatures are products of the imagination of the junkies high on V. If anyone wants it check imdb or check rapidshare. The script was medicore. way better if they stayed faithful to the game. with max paynes innuendos to smart qircks to puns.
July 19th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Matrix like?! thats bullshit, the game was out before that stupid movie was being kicked around as an idea, now we’ll have to deal with all them ijits going “whatever, the movie is a rip off of punisher and the matrix” damn kids…
July 21st, 2008 at 2:49 am
Can anyone name the actress laying down on the bed?
July 24th, 2008 at 11:17 am
That is Ulga Kyralenko … I’m not sure if I spelled her name right. But never the less she’s a hottie. She was hot in Hitman, pretty much made me able to sit through that film, though on the directors cut DVD she gets killed in the end which made the movie better for me. She’s also gonna be a Bond girl in 007: Quantum of Solace.
Definite Hottie.
July 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
looks like they kept that comic book feel to the movie, looks good so far except i dont think mr marky wahlberg is the right guy.
maybe josh brolin from no country for old men and one of my fave films goonies.. lets hope the film is better put together than the half arsed 2nd game.
July 30th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
the game was not out befor the matrix……
August 3rd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Meh! I’ll pass… Marky Mark is no Max Payne… he’s too clean cut. Now if they had a movie called “The Funky Bunch”, he’d be the man for it!!!
August 4th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Okay, will everyone stop with the complaining about it being PG-13. Have you guys ever made a movie? Doubt it, cause if you had you’d know that films are rated by an entirely different organization then video games. They don’t base rating off the same thing. A video game will have a higher rating then a similar movie, simply because its interactive which makes it more likely to make an impression on someone. And today PG-13 can include blood and sexual content, it just can’t show brains getting cut out or actually watching someone screw someone. So why would anyone need to see the brain matter or the falling out of intestines or some chick riding some dude, when it would do nothing then bash the quality of the film. By keeping it PG-13 they take in a wider audience of people, including most teenagers who are also adamant fans of the game. By allowing a lower rating, they sell more tickets, and if its expected to sell more tickets then they get started out with a higher budget. Production companies will give up to fifteen thousand dollars extra, if not more, simply for the difference between PG-13 and R ratings. So you should thank them. By giving it a lower rating, they’ll have more money to make it into a quality movie.
Secondly, the angels are a representation of the Valkyr drug. All of the game was based around Norse mythology and the end of the world. The constant snow storm is predicted in Ragnarok, the man named Woden after the other name for the god Oden, the company named Aesir, the club called Ragna Rock, it was all subtly trying to tell you the story of a simple cop who found himself in a conspiracy in the deeper parts of the world. Aesir is the name for the collective force of the gods that would ultimately shape Ragnarok and the end of the world. The company Aesir in the game think they’re like gods, forming a drug that could indefinitely bring about the end of the world for many people [metaphorically]. The angels are just a representation of the hidden side of the story, induced by the drug Valkyr.
The movie’s gonna go great. Most of the cast watched many noir like films, some John Woo films, and played the game before starting their roles. Its directed competently [at least not by Uwe Boll thankfully] so I’ve no doubt that this movie will come out great. Maybe this will do for the video game to movie franchise that comic book movies have done to that franchise.
August 10th, 2008 at 1:50 am
That wing creature suks. Those dreamlevel were the most bad things I have ever seen in a videogame. So i had thought if the make a game the probably will delete those stupid dreams. But it remains a pity, but what the hell, we will die in the end
August 13th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Guys, the wing creatures are suppose to be apart of his dream. He had dreams or nightmares in the game.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 am
Hey dummies…don’t you remember crazy nightmares he had in the game? Don’t you think that explains the winged creatures? Don’t be so quick to criticize this trailer like the story is going to deviate from the game.
August 24th, 2008 at 8:30 am
In the game Max always talked about the demons around him and the bad choices he made. I think the demons represent the whole darkside to the criminal underworld. In the last part when he shot the guy through the window the demon was there pulling the guy to represent him going to hell after the bullet killed him.
August 24th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
the winged creatures are not in the game…but i think is a good add on since he goes insane and start seeing things. cuz he cant crack the case of the ppl who murderd his family and partner.. i think is gonna be bad ass and the new theme goes pretty well with the move..
