Hearts of Darkness was a famous documentary which chronicled the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic war film Apocalypse Now.

Rain of Madness is a mockumentary chronicling the fictional war movie that is the subject of the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder. A trailer has been released online.

Judging by the trailer. the concept is actually a lot better than it’s execution, but its still definitely worth checking out. I’m just wondering if they filmed an actual full length mockumentary (possibly to appear on the special edition DVD) or does the trailer just exist as its own entity. Because if there was more, wouldn’t that be too meta? I keep hearing nothing but great things about Tropic Thunder. Some of my friends have even seen it twice. As always, I’d be interested to hear what you think in the comments below.

Tropic Thunder hits theaters on August 15th 2008. You can watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com.

How much did steve coogan look like Owen Wilson in the opening shot.

    That was brillant!!!

I liked how they was messing around in some parts and some was them actually doing some parts with lines.

    That was awesome

While this trailer was pretty funny, I would hope there isn’t a full length mockumentary being made. The main reason is it would be basically the same thing as the movie. The film is about them making the movie right, so wouldn’t that be what the mockumentary be about too? Just seems like they would be doubling up a bit…

I think its the final product of what they got while trying to make the movie. Like the movie about them making a Don Quixote movie and it failing really bad but making a great doc to boot.

The documentary, if feature length, might be like quasi-rehearsals from production where they were staying in character but weren’t shooting with film, just video. That way, if they can turn it into a Hearts of Darkness-type thing, then you can sell that on the DVD. If it just looks like a bunch of outtakes and B roll, then that can be on the DVD anyway. The only stuff I can imagine they had to go out of their way to do would be the sit-down stuff with Coogan and Stiller/Downey/Black… and that, like I said, would basically be like a rehearsal anyway so, it’s kind of a win-win.

Either way, it’s majestic. It’s becoming clear that any fart jokes (in this and the international trailer) by Fats Portnoy (Jack Black) are intentionally involved to poke fun at the fact that the type of actor/film his character is spoofing is the type of actor/film relies solely on fart jokes. Does that make sense? It’s very meta, to me.

Yeah, this looks pretty funny. I could see something about 30 minutes long, but any longer and the gags may begin to get tiresome. I’m still more excited for the movie though.

    :) that was good

Since when did RDJ become the funniest black actor in films? Say it isn’t so.

Anyoneelse notice Ben Stiller carrying babies instead of seals (I think it was), for his action movie clip?

i would love to see this mockumetry. im betting it might show up on some cable channel week before the film release. i would love to see this, it looks funny and interesting.

Yeah, Stiller used to be carrying pandas :\

Anyways, this looks hilarious. It’ll look really authentic too, like a mockumentary shot with a $100+ million budget from all the extras, equipment, etc. they automatically get

Yeah they could make a tv special…obviously it’d end up on the dvd.
