UPDATED 07/09/08: QT is still keeping his sights on an opening at Cannes next May!!!! Inglorious Bastards begins shooting in October. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Weinsteins are co-producing the film and looking to team with another studio due to the film’s “accelerated production schedule.” Dude!

UPDATED 07/08/08: Tarantino is reportedly now in talks with Brad Pitt to star in his WWII-Spaghetti Western blowout, Inglorious Bastards, according to Nikki Finke. Pitt previously starred as the stoner Floyd in True Romance, a QT script.

Before the update a few /Film readers speculated in the comments that Tarantino was going outside The Weinstein Co. to other studios in order to land a pricey cast of A-listers, the kind of Dream Team that’s been rumored for years. Pitt is one step in that direction.

——-

SLASHFILM DEBATE: If you could only see one of the two during your lifetime and you would have the option to view the entire film RIGHT NOW: would you choose Inglorious Bastards or The Dark Knight? (Peter chose TDK and he’s already seen it! Whoa. I choose Inglorious Bastards. And if TDK is better than Kill Bill, I’ll eat a shoe on /filmcast. Stay tuned.)

——-

With a sea of Internetters joining the bring-it-on parade that is Inglorious Bastards IRL, Quentin Tarantino is now shopping his finished script around town to Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount and Sony. The news arrives today via Nikki Finke, and she’s quick to point out that one studio is missing from the list: The Weinstein Co.

Before anyone signals a hungry death knell, Harvey Weinstein is reportedly producing the film(s) with Lawrence Bender (cool), but if true, TWC loses its blue-chip auteur to the competition, the iconic talent who was a money-luring cornerstone in the company’s aggressive formation. All of QT’s films dating back to Reservoir Dogs (and Four Rooms even) on through Death Proof have carried the TWC/Miramax bumper. Sniffle. With other mavericks of a generation like Robert Rodriguez (Barbarella) and Kevin Smith (Red State) taking their projects elsewhere as of late—albeit amicably—QT’s departure will be seen as yet another sign of money troubles and newly restrained creative risk at TWC. As Finke speculates, Grindhouse’s financial blunder aside, the company’s investors are probably not psyched.

The exclusion of TWC as a financial backer worries me a bit. The Weinsteins offered QT all the room he needed to put his vision on screen time and time again, down to obsessive minutiae. A new studio could  prove problematic after filming on IB has started, given the expected epic scope of the project and, well,  QT. I mean, it’s QT. On the flip-side, some feel that Inglorious Bastards is a hard sell and a risk, but I disagree, especially after Pitt’s possible involvement leaked today. Kill Bill relied on Uma Thurman, not the biggest box office draw then or now, to carry two films back to back, and each grossed over $65 million domestically. IB will most likely have a recognizable and buzzing ensemble cast, possibly making for one of the most macho effing movies ever created; this automatically puts it a notch above in terms of accessibility compared to KB’s cultish brew of chopsocky homage. Also: the “war films aren’t popular” theory doesn’t fly here I feel.

Hunter, I know for sure that you will disagree, but The Dark Knight is clearly on a level above Kill Bill.

kill bill was good, i loved it so much that i was an instant qt fan. then i saw his other work. im not a bog fan of his. he seems to have fun with his movies, but they seem more like he made them for himself and his buddies, and didnt really care if anyone else liked it. i dont know, thats just my opinion.

I am kinda sick of seeing his foot fetish scenes and seeing his ass play a part in the movie, its kinda ghey, like m night shamalalaaklalabad. I like his movies, but they're no big deal. TDK seems like it might be more fun, look better, etc...

if i had to choose, i would choose TDK. Kill Bill was pretty fucking awesome, so it might be a close call...

hunter, as long as its leather, its still technically animal flesh. are you going for synthetic materials or real leather?

If Pitt is truly in IB, then I would choose it... no matter what I can't wait for this film to be made.

Even though I think TDK will be awesome in every way, it's power will eventually give way to the next great comic book film. Where Inglorious Bastards is concerned, I have a feeling it will be in "the conversation" for a long time. At his best, Tarantino can deliver.

However, it's a silly debate. Apples to oranges. It's Batman's moment. I'm going to enjoy it.

I would have to cast my ballot in favor of TDK, because of both my massive love of Batman in general and my (personally well founded) dislike for QT. While I will admit that Kill Bill Vol. 1 could arguably be used as THE barometer by which to judge the definition of entertainment, I feel Tarantino himself is an egotistic and unoriginal filmmaker. Yes, the style in which he films is instantly recognizable, but his (read stolen) source material is thinly veiled and never given its full credit. Sure, he may mention from time to time on DVD special features the names of the movies he often mirrors, but states shortly thereafter that "all directors steal, there is no such thing as an homage." (pardon the lack of exact citation, I think it was in the Charlie Rose interview on the Pulp Fiction DVD) Keep in mind, however, that his obvious wealth of cinematic history knowledge and the sheer volume of things he has seen is flat out astonishing, as is his success story in general. Nevertheless, I don't feel that establishes him as a notable talent, nor does it sway me to look forward to the byproduct of a series of greater movies mixed with obscure dialogue. TDK ftw.

From what I can tell by the reviews and previews, The Dark Knight is more than just a comic book movie, it appears to have some pretty serious tones and lots of meaning and emotion. Heck, Batman Begins did - They can only do better in my opinion.

Haven't yet seen SOP. However, if you're looking for another good Iraq/current U.S. quagmire documentary, I'd recommend Heavy Metal in Baghdad - it's surprisingly excellent. Hopefully, I'll have a review of that in shortly.

Dark Knight... and being better than Kill Bill isn't exactly difficult, can't wait to see the shoe eating :)

The Dark Knight, hands down. I can't stand Tarantino and his holier-than-thou bullshit dialogue and persona. Christoper Nolan is an incredible director who doesn't just rehash genres like QT. You don't see Nolan making a big deal about his own movie (I guarantee QT would be making ridiculous statements about it), and The Dark Knight is going to be better than Batman Begins, which was already the best comic book movie ever made. Dark Knight over Inglorious Bastards for me any time.
  • Chris
I like Tarantino, but I like The Joker and Two-Face characters more.

Heath's Joker really has me in.

No film in the past 6-7 years has given me the chills like Kill Bill 1&2 did. I was literally in awe for most of the films. Questin just knows how to deliver. Simple.

I can't tell you hor FUCKING ill the scene was at the House of Blue Leaves in the Snow. Seriously, it was that good.

I haven't seen either, and I know I'm going to love TDK, but damn if you can't get excited over ING BAS then you are a lonely lonely soul

What dream team? Didn't Ocean's Whatever teach us anything? You can't just put a bunch of A-listers in a movie and expect it to be great. Great films tend to make actors A-listers, not the other way around.

As for the QOTD: I'd see TDK - or let me put it this way: I'd rather see Heath Ledger's last complete film than Brad Pitt's.

Since when has QT ever done anything revolutionary? I'm sure this film will be good, but choosing to see it over Dark Knight? That's just fucking crazy.

I would erase all Tarantino movies from my brain and never watch them again if that's what it takes to see Dark Knight.
  • Alex
what a ghey debate. what sense does that even make??
  • nick
    Inglorious Bastards!!!
  • VTchina
    TDK.
QT honestly has grown somewhat annoying at least with regards to his public appearances. I know I can trust Nolan and co. after Batman Begins, and everything about Dark Knight looks like an improvement.
  • Eliza
The Dark Knight will be a great movie experience for sure, and doubtless, it will be a good film. The fact that there have been rumblings for years (which are already in the process of becoming thunderous hype) about Inglorious Bastards is ridiculous. In a good way. It *could* be a masterpiece. Plus I will always heart QT. I vote Inglorious Bastards.
  • The Dark Knight.
  • O
TDK, totally. I am getting tired of QT's lame homages to his obscure loves. That being said, QT is an amazing director.....and he should split from WC yesterday.

    The Dark Knight.

Inglorious Bastards will most likely be more Flash Flash Wit Wit B-Movie Reference Ego Ego Homage/Ripoff -- even though he says it will be different and revolutionary.

if i could only watch one film period, it would be the dark knight.
  • Goobity
TDK will be a great film no doubt, but it won't offer anything truly revolutionary. After reading the comics for 20 + years (and the previous movies with the same stories...) I've seen it all before. Batman defeats the Joker, and Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face. Yeah, we get it. :)

Put me down for Inglorious Bastards, thank you.

To me, QT is now like Tom Cruise. Some time after "The Firm", His Cruise-ness was "born" and he has overshadow his art ever since. QT is the same way to me. When the artist becomes larger than his or her art, I have less and less appreciation for the artist or their art.

Add to it I think QT is uneven lately. Some of his work comes with both greatness and sad, B-movie, over-the-top schlock. Put those together and you come out of the theater with nothing but rump rash and thoughts of, "QT! WTF?".

But because he made Pulp Fiction and KB, I will maintain some faith in him.

On the other hand, my fear with The Dark Knight is this: It will be one of the few movies that is a great follow up to the original, if not superior to the original.

But will it be anything more than effects, sound and fury that looks all too played in two years? Or will it have some real emotional or human core beneath the bat mask and clown paint that continues to ring true two years from now?

I don't depend on QT to give me depth. But on a good day his vision, writing, and cinematic style exposes the truth, humor, and baseness of the human condition like few Pop-fiction directors can.

I don't look to comics, costume, Sci-Fi and fantasy flicks to give me depth either. But I got that in The Matrix, Gladiator, BSG, Dark City, Donny Darko and others.

Having said that... um, I want both.
