UPDATED 07/09/08: QT is still keeping his sights on an opening at Cannes next May!!!! Inglorious Bastards begins shooting in October. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Weinsteins are co-producing the film and looking to team with another studio due to the film’s “accelerated production schedule.” Dude!

UPDATED 07/08/08: Tarantino is reportedly now in talks with Brad Pitt to star in his WWII-Spaghetti Western blowout, Inglorious Bastards, according to Nikki Finke. Pitt previously starred as the stoner Floyd in True Romance, a QT script.

Before the update a few /Film readers speculated in the comments that Tarantino was going outside The Weinstein Co. to other studios in order to land a pricey cast of A-listers, the kind of Dream Team that’s been rumored for years. Pitt is one step in that direction.

——-

SLASHFILM DEBATE: If you could only see one of the two during your lifetime and you would have the option to view the entire film RIGHT NOW: would you choose Inglorious Bastards or The Dark Knight? (Peter chose TDK and he’s already seen it! Whoa. I choose Inglorious Bastards. And if TDK is better than Kill Bill, I’ll eat a shoe on /filmcast. Stay tuned.)

——-

With a sea of Internetters joining the bring-it-on parade that is Inglorious Bastards IRL, Quentin Tarantino is now shopping his finished script around town to Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount and Sony. The news arrives today via Nikki Finke, and she’s quick to point out that one studio is missing from the list: The Weinstein Co.

Before anyone signals a hungry death knell, Harvey Weinstein is reportedly producing the film(s) with Lawrence Bender (cool), but if true, TWC loses its blue-chip auteur to the competition, the iconic talent who was a money-luring cornerstone in the company’s aggressive formation. All of QT’s films dating back to Reservoir Dogs (and Four Rooms even) on through Death Proof have carried the TWC/Miramax bumper. Sniffle. With other mavericks of a generation like Robert Rodriguez (Barbarella) and Kevin Smith (Red State) taking their projects elsewhere as of late—albeit amicably—QT’s departure will be seen as yet another sign of money troubles and newly restrained creative risk at TWC. As Finke speculates, Grindhouse’s financial blunder aside, the company’s investors are probably not psyched.

The exclusion of TWC as a financial backer worries me a bit. The Weinsteins offered QT all the room he needed to put his vision on screen time and time again, down to obsessive minutiae. A new studio could  prove problematic after filming on IB has started, given the expected epic scope of the project and, well,  QT. I mean, it’s QT. On the flip-side, some feel that Inglorious Bastards is a hard sell and a risk, but I disagree, especially after Pitt’s possible involvement leaked today. Kill Bill relied on Uma Thurman, not the biggest box office draw then or now, to carry two films back to back, and each grossed over $65 million domestically. IB will most likely have a recognizable and buzzing ensemble cast, possibly making for one of the most macho effing movies ever created; this automatically puts it a notch above in terms of accessibility compared to KB’s cultish brew of chopsocky homage. Also: the “war films aren’t popular” theory doesn’t fly here I feel.

I am not sure if this is just tarantino looking for better offers or the script is going to be very good and he thinks that he can do better than the Weinstiens are offering.

But hopefully someone gets there hands on the script and give it a review.
  • Captain Awesome
The Weinsteins could be just stiffling how he goes about his films. They sure as hell didn't know how to market Grindhouse in the US, much less outside of the country. I still remember how the trailers didn't even mention the double-feature at all, or showed any of the fake trailers in their own standing. So I can see why he would be shopping this around to get a better deal.
  • Graham
maybe it requires a bigger budget than the weinsteins can offer
  • Christopher Edwards
You correct Captain Awesome in the U.K with grindhouse doing as bad as it did in the USA they made them separate but showed them togther with out telling anyone in a main stream way.

I think that he wants possilbe massive names that are in the mix over the years that only a different studio could get the names to talk to him about the film.
  • The Jezzus
I thought Grindhouse kicked ass. Both films.

Tarantino is probably just doing what GDT has been doing for years. Shopping around for the studio that fits the role QT wants.
  • Amanda
    Who cares! Tarantino sucks!
  • Grindhouse was probably the most fun theater experience i have ever had. It felt like i was in a movie theater full of kids in the 50s. Popcorn throwing cheering and laughing but all in good fun. (it was a midnight showing at universal orlando)
  • evergreen
Was that supposed to be difficult?

    TDK.
  • Retro
The Dark Knight of course without a doubt.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    Inglorious Bastards.
  • orange cinema
i think you bring up a good point hunter: i'd bet anything that IB will create the same internet thunder that TDK has. by the time it comes out, there will be a fever for it.

And i think if pitt really is cast, QT could be going for the statues with this film. especially since it seems like he's casting/shopping outside of his normal box.
  • jimbo stewart
Dark Knight. Are you kidding me?
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ jimbo stewart

If TDK is better than Kill Bill, I'll eat a leather shoe on /Filmcast in homage to Herzog. I expect it to rock---rock hard----but I don't expect it to be better than KB. So, no, I'm not joking.
  • Captain Awesome
    Hunter,

Why not both you bitch? I want to see BOTH films badly. Why choose between the two?

Also Brad Pitt in this would be great. I loved him in TR.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Captain Awesome

This question is like playing "Would You Rather..."

Both is not an option bitch.
  • sean coates
LMAO...anyone who picked the dark knight is an idiot... u can wait a week to see the dark knight .....SOOOOo obviously Inglorious Bastards
  • Captain Awesome
    Hunter,

That's like asking me to choose between titties and ass. Give me the whole meal kid! Theres more than enough room for the asshole and thighs too.
  • Meli
Damn, that's a tough question! I want to see both, but
when it comes down to what will sit on my shelf for years to come
and have more repeat veiwings I'd have to say Inglorious Bastards.
  • Adam
    No Question. The Dark Knight.

I haven't liked Quentin for quite some time now, but even Batman & Robin couldn't kill my great love for Batman.
  • I say Inglorious Bastards, TDK is starting to make emo kids wear there mothers makeup. QT invokes coolness, never has he invoked men to wear makeup. What is not cool.
  • I meant, "Which is not Cool"
  • afterburner
This is the hardest question i have been asked e v e r. Sorry Batman, I gota say IB. Great question. I will ask my friends this it will drive them crazy.
  • Chromey
    @ The Jezzus

What the fuck is GDT ?
  • Nathan Name
QT fans are "homers" and why is Hunter going around and calling people bitches? BTW The Dark Knight
  • Captain Awesome
"I say Inglorious Bastards, TDK is starting to make emo kids wear there mothers makeup. QT invokes coolness, never has he invoked men to wear makeup. What is not cool."

lol, you guys are such fucking drama queens
  • Captain Awesome
    Nathan,

I called him a "bitch" first. So it's only fair he fire back ;)
  • Chromey
As far as the question goes... I pick both. Oh snap.
  • lotus_eater
why do all you idiots have a hard on for tarantino? he's not that great. this movie will be fun at most, not amazing or groundbreaking.
  • I'd rather see Inglorious Bastards.
  • Captain Awesome
    See, Chromey is good people.
  • Zera
    TDK.
  • Anonymous Geek
    Toughie.

I can't lie, Tarantino doing World War 2 as crazy violent R with a bunch of great actors probably will never be topped. The Kill Bill movies, I am constantly watching them. Inglorious will be the same I feel and may be more.

And when did geeks start doubting Tarantino? You should have your geek badges taken away.
  • QT to Rule Them All
inglorious bastards is the only movie i would put ahead of tdk

slashfilm do you have the script? i wouldn't doubt it. i will trade you pretty much anything
  • TheDaftPunk
The Dark Knight, definitely. Quentin Tarantino makes really great movies, but I'd prefer epic crime fighting action over sarcastic, insightful dialogue in this case. TDK is looking to be the best superhero movie ever, and easily the movie of the year for me. Can't wait.

    @ Hunter Stephenson

Motivating Errol Morris to finish his first feature is my favorite contribution that Herzog has made to Cinema. Of course, Morris claims to have no memory that Herzog made such a challenge in the first place.

Either way, nice reference, and have you seen SOP?
  • Of course TDK.

A better comparison would be, going back to 1994,

"Would you rather watch Pulp Fiction or The Dark Knight?"
  • Timothy
To me, QT is now like Tom Cruise. Some time after "The Firm", His Cruise-ness was "born" and he has overshadow his art ever since. QT is the same way to me. When the artist becomes larger than his or her art, I have less and less appreciation for the artist or their art.

Add to it I think QT is uneven lately. Some of his work comes with both greatness and sad, B-movie, over-the-top schlock. Put those together and you come out of the theater with nothing but rump rash and thoughts of, "QT! WTF?".

But because he made Pulp Fiction and KB, I will maintain some faith in him.

On the other hand, my fear with The Dark Knight is this: It will be one of the few movies that is a great follow up to the original, if not superior to the original.

But will it be anything more than effects, sound and fury that looks all too played in two years? Or will it have some real emotional or human core beneath the bat mask and clown paint that continues to ring true two years from now?

I don't depend on QT to give me depth. But on a good day his vision, writing, and cinematic style exposes the truth, humor, and baseness of the human condition like few Pop-fiction directors can.

I don't look to comics, costume, Sci-Fi and fantasy flicks to give me depth either. But I got that in The Matrix, Gladiator, BSG, Dark City, Donny Darko and others.

Having said that... um, I want both.
  • jj gonzo
    who gives a fuck about
    queerantino, he looks like
    that old moon faced character
    from the old McDONALDS
TV ads!!! ROB ZOMBIE is a
    much better director than
    queerantino!!!!
    THE DAWN IS COMING I
    PROMISE YOU!!!!
  • Goobity
TDK will be a great film no doubt, but it won't offer anything truly revolutionary. After reading the comics for 20 + years (and the previous movies with the same stories...) I've seen it all before. Batman defeats the Joker, and Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face. Yeah, we get it. :)

Put me down for Inglorious Bastards, thank you.
  • Nick
if i could only watch one film period, it would be the dark knight.
  • My Name is BigHanks
    Inglorious Bastards

Will he really eat his shoe ? I will pay him 50 dollars
  • magic k
Brad Pitt would be great! Inglorious Bastards will PWN.

    My answer : INGLORIOUS B
  • TheMarquis
    The Dark Knight.

Inglorious Bastards will most likely be more Flash Flash Wit Wit B-Movie Reference Ego Ego Homage/Ripoff -- even though he says it will be different and revolutionary.

    [please prove me wrong, QT]
  • jj gonzo
    THE DARK KNIGHT ALL
    THE WAY!!!! HEATH LEDGER
    DESERVES AN OSCAR!!!!
(I wonder what SEXMAN thinks of this)
  • O
TDK, totally. I am getting tired of QT's lame homages to his obscure loves. That being said, QT is an amazing director.....and he should split from WC yesterday.
  • The Dark Knight.
  • Eliza
The Dark Knight will be a great movie experience for sure, and doubtless, it will be a good film. The fact that there have been rumblings for years (which are already in the process of becoming thunderous hype) about Inglorious Bastards is ridiculous. In a good way. It *could* be a masterpiece. Plus I will always heart QT. I vote Inglorious Bastards.
  • VTchina
    TDK.
QT honestly has grown somewhat annoying at least with regards to his public appearances. I know I can trust Nolan and co. after Batman Begins, and everything about Dark Knight looks like an improvement.
  • nick
    Inglorious Bastards!!!
  • Alex
what a ghey debate. what sense does that even make??
