Since Tuesday, Hancock has grossed over $40 million domestically and is on track to stack $100 million plus by wke’s end. While early word from critics and geeks is decidedly mixed, that’s a lot of moolah for Will Smith, director Peter Berg (his first major hit), and Sony. How puzzling then that Nikke Finke says there are serious doubts circling inside the studio regarding Hancock’s franchise potential—she even compares the film’s buzz to Wild Wild West. Jab, Hook, Jab. With a reported budget of $150 million, Jeff Wells cries Feh if the film grosses $90 mill or less by Sunday. Meanwhile, Diddy swooned and probably received a nice paycheck. UPDATE 2: It’s on target for $110 million. Wells now says he’s “in pain.” Aww.

My take: the flow of flip-flops, Crocs and wheelies after the holiday will remain steady, less steady than I Am Legend, which received similar “third act was wack” laments, but so what? Will Smith’s “coasting” will outperform the equally pricey The Incredible Hulk. And judging from early viewer comments below, “light fun” beats out-and-out hate.

Discuss: So, what did you think? In a summer of superlative superhero outings, where does Will Smith’s gravity-defying, comic-less street gruff fall? What did you make of the twisteroo that’s drawing steely comparisons to the guy who made The Happening? Would the film have been cooler if it was freed up by an R-rating as originally envisioned and marked by the MPAA—click here to read Vincent Ngo’s leaked screenplay forTonight, He Comes. Was the 92-minute running time too short? Was the editing botched? Is a sequel warranted? What of the performances of Smith and Charlize Theron? Does the Hancock storyline/concept cancel out “Demon in a Bottle” for Iron Man 2 as some have prematurely suggested in the preceding weeks? Worth seeing in a theater?

As expecting. If there’s one thing Will Smith can do, it is sell a movie.

  2. Gravatar

Finke isn’t the only one who seems to think the movie is underperforming. Over at Hollywood Elsewhere, Jeffrey Wells says he wouldn’t be surprised if it fails to reach a $100 million opening. Fantasy Moguls’ Steve Mason has also been steadily dropping his predictions.

The film has basically gone from opening weekend expectations of $125-150 million to $115 to the current $90-100 million. I assumed a big drop wouldn’t occur until the second weekend, but it appears as if the negative reviews are already having an affect on the film’s business.

  3. Gravatar

I am gonna go on a limb here and go against critics and say i LOVED this movie….. I thought the story was excellent. It had Will Smiths great comedy in it and Charlize is hot! Jason Bateman is only getting better in my book.. and that little kid that also played in FNL is amazing!!!!!

  4. Gravatar

I went into this movie with the vibe that the movie was going to be one of the most awful things that I have ever seen. But, it was a lot better than what I expected and I actually left the movie happy with the outcome. It was good up untill the “twist” and then it got kinda corny and lame.

  5. Gravatar

A loto of people don’t like the movie, I loved it though

  6. Gravatar

I’m kind of baffled by the movie’s (so far) success. But, I don’t think it will have good repeat business. Hancock doesn’t really work for kids/teenagers, and it doesn’t really work for adults, and I suspect it will have lukewarm word-of-mouth.

Also, based on his track record of blockbuster hits, I don’t understand how Will Smith keeps packing them in. Sure, he’s got star appeal, but when’s the last time Will Smith was in a solid summer movie? Probably Men in Black. But count the ones from there on out– Wild Wild West, Men in Black II, iRobot, Hitch, Bad Boys II and now Hancock. When are people going to wise-up?

  7. Gravatar

i think the early release date on a tuesday night is what hurt it’s weekend gross…like said above-negative reviews are already surfacing and its not even the weekend (time when most people go to the theatre) def. makes sense to me and looks like even though its not a bomb it won’t do as expected b/c of the early in the week “weekend” release.

  8. Gravatar

Hahahaha I like the line “Breasts so full they could give your dead uncle a boner”

thats a very accurate description of charlize theron in my opinion

  9. Gravatar

it was exactly what you’d expect from the trailer, only with an unnecessary plot twist. i lost all interest at that point. the second half was a disaster. first half was ok, thanks to jason bateman. but would i watch it again or tell anyone they need to see it? no.
    i give the movie a c-.
mclovin and dylan are retarded if they ‘loved’ this movie. its nothing special.

  10. Gravatar

it was ok. entertaining at least. the concept is good but the story’s not that great.

  11. Gravatar

    Maybe even a prequel.

  12. Gravatar

It does have it’s share of problems mainly because so much was crammed into 90 minute, but I sill had fun watching it.

  13. Gravatar

Demon in a Bottle was never a real option for Iron Man2. seriously.
they sell toys for it. to kids. they marketed iron man just as much to 5 year olds as they did anyone else, meaning they wont have an adult themed sequel. period.

  14. Gravatar

oh, and hancock would have been way better if they had just not had an origin story. if it had just been straight up hancock, it would have been fine.

but it wasnt so it wasnt.

  15. Gravatar

I saw it Wed. It was fun to watch, it definitely jumped the shark with the big twist. I would have preffered it to focus more on the addictions of Hancock. I think that they barely grazed over it in the time they had. I also though that it was edited pretty roughly and its clear that this will be a better film on dvd when they can restore whatever they cut out to get the PG-13. Will Smith though was great as usual, and he and Bateman save the film from being unwatchable. The first half of the movie is really entertaining.

I don’t think this movie will have any bearing on Demon in a Bottle being used for Iron Man, however having recently re-read the Demon in a Bottle arc, I doubt that it will be used as it was in the comics in the film, that story arc just isn’t that exciting.

  16. Gravatar

It was very disappointing for me but not terrible, maybe bad. The editing/directing were probably the lowest points for me. I felt they were awful and ruined an otherwise potentially good film/franchise. They constantly treated the audience like children by giving an extra shot, or multiples ones, so that we would understand what was going on even if it was absolutely obvious. And that fucking shaking cam crap, ahh!
I actually liked the twist and most of the movie afterwards exploring that point. What I didn’t like was Mary’s resistance to the truth and just kicking the crap out of Hancock for no good reason. Totally unnecessary story filler that took me way out of their personal relationship. I was bummed they didn’t spend much time of H being an asshole.
The villain is a guy with a severed hand. Fuck you. That was so ridiculously stupid I almost laughed.
Oh, and most of the dialogue was meh.
I wouldn’t mind seeing this become a series as long as it’s not as bad as this was.

  17. Gravatar

I thought it was okay. Definitely too short. The ending was way too rushed

  18. Gravatar

I loved it. Will Smith is the man

  19. Gravatar

I thought it was good, although I can’t wait for the unrated DVD. I would absolutely see a sequel. Drunk superhero Will Smith rocked. I don’t think Hancock holds a candle to the Demon in a bottle storyline, hear that Fav? Get on it for Iron Man 2!

  20. Gravatar

Saw it and was expecting alot less and it delviered all that I could want lol

I would see it again and recomneded it to a few others.

If it had the full lenght and the R rating it would of been even better lol

  21. Gravatar

Note: They could have saved some money if they didn’t build half a blue whale that you see for all of three seconds in a wide shot! Wasteful Hollywood filmmakers.

BTW- The movie was just ok. Don’t try to blow smoke up our collective asses.

  22. Gravatar

An interesting “little indie movie” concept - superhero on the skids and pr guy desperate to succeed - dies on the table about a third of the way through. You know something’s between Smith and Theron, but when it’s finally revealed, it’s so beyond ridiculous and the final third is almost unwatchably bad. I say it tanks next weekend but plays big overseas because the action set pieces are big, stupid and LOUD.

  23. Gravatar

I havent seen it yet, im debating if i want to see it. But if they would have took their time with it and did all that dark stuff like the drinking with the underage girl and other crazy stuff and made it like 150 minutes it would have been gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    MY OPINION!!!

  24. Gravatar

The only reason this might break 100 mil is because its a long weekend.

Theron is a chainsmoking actress, big boobs yeah whatever. Wouldn’t go near that mouth.

  25. Gravatar

I didn’t like it. I don’t like my superheroes “black”.
(This was overheard as we left the movie theatre)

As for the film? Easily a “wait for rental or cable” type of movie. The special effects we’re really bad. It was better than I Am Legend. If that means anything to anyone.

  26. Gravatar

    Richard,

Yeah that part you speak of is what was just plain stupid. It had this steady tolerable flow to it. Then “that” happens. I wonder how much better of a film it would have been if they had kept all the “dark” element originally intended for it.

  27. Gravatar

It was okay. I paid four bucks to see it so for four bucks it was well worth the effort. The only thing that irked me was he was on Comedy Central today hyping the movie and he said something along the lines of “an acholic super hero, I thought it would be this great original idea”

  28. Gravatar

    @ Hunter
I don’t want to see Demon in a bottle because RDJ, god love him, has been playing off the alcoholic thing a bit too much of late. See Charlie Bartlett and Zodiac. Anyway, they should just do as they did with the first one and imply that he drinks but don’t go into the whole addiction thing. Keep Iron Man light hearted and fun. That was what set it apart from the rest of this summers brood-fest.

  29. Gravatar

I will give HANCOCK a C+ , It was ok, but not great, We are going to have to wait for BATMAN to see the next great movie of 2008.

  30. Gravatar

I didn’t think this movie always made sense (I’ll avoid details for the sake of not spoiling anything) but even so I enjoyed the heck out of it. I didn’t think Iron Man made much sense either (for instance, why should terrorists kidnap Tony Stark and have him build a weapon if Jeff Bridges is already selling them weapons?) but I thought Hancock just weird enough that the plot holes didn’t bother me. Incredible Hulk hung together well-enough, but it sure was pedestrian. I have no doubt that Dark Knight will flatten everything else, but at the end of the summer I bet Hancock is in my personal superhero second place.

  31. Gravatar

    Hancock sucks!!

    The Happening is much better.

    1st half: 8/10
    2nd half: 2/10
    overall: 4/10

  32. Gravatar

What the HELL is wrong with some of you people! I understand that not everyone is going to agree but seriously! The whole point of the TWIST was to show/personify the whole superhero decision between the needs of one vs. the needs of many. Do you choose to live a normal life and be happy, or do you sacrafice your own personal happiness but save the world. I for one think the movie was great and the undertones of Hancock’s loneliness and personal struggle were great, includign the twist and his final decision.

My only complaint is that there could have been more scenes of Hancock in his uniform and doing his new thing. Also there could have been more explanation of how and where Hancock came from. Otherwise I think Hancock was great and I’d be interested to see where they could go with it in a sequal.

  33. Gravatar

    @kryptkal

I can’t even fathom why you would want to see more scenes of him in costume? Is it so the movie can seem more bland and generic? Hancock was good when he was an ass and did a halfassed job at heroics. His reformed self, on the other hand, was just another guy flying saving people. I really wished they had more about his addictions. And as for an origin story, are you kidding me? They explained it, and really thats all they needed. Around in ancient times, blah blah. I didnt mind the explanation, but there is no need at all for more time to be wasted on origin.
The scene where the twist was revealed was a bit confusing to me, especially the line “we’re brother and sister”. And the fight, was there a point?
I liked the movie, didnt love it, but if they do release an R rated version of Hancock I would rent it.
So far I’m about half way through the script and I am terribly sad they didn’t just film it as is. I like it. I can’t get the image of Rorschach from Watchmen except with powers out of my head, but i would have gladly paid for a ticket to Tonight, He Comes. I wonder if i like it because the script is actually pretty funny, the boner dead uncle line in particular made me laugh out loud.

  34. Gravatar

It was HORRIBLE. I wish there was a double caps lock so I could emphasize how awful I thought this was. The first 20 minute or so was alright but after that you wish you were watching an old Fresh Prince Video which is the worst thing ever except for the rest of this movie. Ugh.

  35. Gravatar

    :Icon 2 enthusiastic thumbs down:

    1. All the good stuff is in the trailers.
    2. Predictable as a three company episode.

Your money is better spent seeing Wanted again.

  36. Gravatar

I do have one minor complaint after thinking about it for a few days…… who “made” them in pairs? why pairs? Why aren’t they allowed to be together?

  37. Gravatar

I enjoyed the movie. I went in expecting a diaster, but it was better than I thought it would be.

The major problems were the edting and the PG-13 rating. In the Prison scene, when Hancock beat the two guys up they cut that short. The audience was having a genuine laugh and they cut through the middle of the scene. This would have been a much better movie with the freedom a “R” rating would have provided. They gave in to the magical PG-13.

Not a diaster, but could have been better. Fire the editor and Producer for the sequel.

  38. Gravatar

I felt like some of the comedic dialogue didnt flow. I wanted him to fight a bigger enemy like an archnemesis but then again, it was cool that they didnt because it set the movie apart from others.

In the end i thought it was alrite, Will Smith is always cool. Idont think the movie was nearly as bad as Wild Wild West but it definetely wasnt great and I was looking for Will smith to do something awesome after personally being dissapointed by Legend.

  39. Gravatar

    @Captain Awesome

No way this was better than I am legend, this sucked from about the halfway point whereas only I am legends ending sucked.

Despite the fact that the film sucked from around the halfway point I didn’t find myself hating it - not sure if that’s a compliment or what but there you go.

  40. Gravatar

It would have been a better film if they had pushed for that restricted rating….It felt held back at a few points, most likely where the edits happened…If theres a sequel it would be nice if they actually had a decent villain…a few slow moments dragged it down and the action scenes seemed great too bad there weren’t enough…also the running time was also a bit short for a movie with this size of a budget…I would have expected at least 2 hours…it’s like Cloverfield effect you kind of feel cheated with these short running times…overall 7/10…it’s just slightly underneath “Wanted” for it’ entertainment value…as a plus it was nice to see an original super hero movie that didn’t feel like parody…I can understand why Marvel is a little upset about the Demon in The Bottle storyline won’t end up being used because of Hancock, but Iron Man can be great without it….

  41. Gravatar

    @Captain

I agree with you totally on the I Am Legend thing…that movie made me thank god that the Omega Man existed….How can they make O.M. so great then screw up an update with CGI mutants that look awful…Would have been cost effective to dress up some extras in makeup…I’m in the understanding any movie with Will Smith’s price tag will end up with cheap special effects because the money is going into his pocket….What’s up with these actors grabbing such large cuts from the production budget…they should be taking more box office cut deals, so that the movie doesn’t suffer quality issues…nothing is worse than a cheaply looking blockbuster…

  42. Gravatar

The movie was lukewarm at best and will ultimately be forgotten when July 18 rolls around.

    Why So Serious?

  43. Gravatar

Captain Awesome: i never liked my Superheros ‘White’

  44. Gravatar

It’s obvious that the film was going to suck. There is precedent of Smith starring in crappy films. I’m looking through his credits and just about every film he is in is complete garbage.

  45. Gravatar

While not great I was entertained by the first 2/3rd of the story but the twist at the one hr mark just buries it. Its hard to believe that the script writers thought that the dumb twist was the way to go. Hancock had real potential to be a nice franchise for Sony but that creative choice sucked all the good will out of it for me! I left disapointed!

  46. Gravatar

i think nolan has just raised the bar so high, that every comic/superhero film from now on will struggle to meet expectations. hancock, ironman 2, cap amer, thor, whatever - audiences will expect more, and i think we should. i was really shocked that people were on ironman’s nuts so bad, because it was THE SAME TYPICAL HERO FORMULA MOVIE, that we’ve seen dozens of times.

smith will always bring an audience, regardless of the content, but hero films(hopefully) are about to go in a very serious direction, and weak/soft gags won’t work anymore.

  47. Gravatar

    daniel,

I thought IAL was abysmal. One of the more sillier takes on Matheson’s story. I don’t know if it was the CG, the script, or the shoe-horned God thing. But overall the film was a disaster. There were small parts in it that almost felt like they were going to gain traction. But never did. Those were the most “un-scariest” characters to be in a film. Not sure who was responsible for the yelling, rubbery, stretch-y mouth people. But that was one of the main reasons the story just didn’t stick for me. Much less feel sympathy for anything or anyone in it. They just weren’t frightening or felt like they had a place in the film.

    Christopher Marc,

And I did’t get it. If they were going to do such plain-looking creatures in CG. Why not just hire a bunch of cheap extras to put some clothes and and start chasing Smith? Seeing those “dog’s” were groan-inducing. The infected in both the DOTD remake and 28 Days Later were much more frightening and believable.

I hope one day for someone to do a closer and better translation of Matheson’s original story.

    And REAL6,

I like them in whatever color. Just as long as they’re done well. ;)

  48. Gravatar

Better than I Am Legend, though it has less of a meaning.

PROS: The concept of the first half was pretty original, since that’s what 99.99% of what a normal person would do if he/she had superpowers. The mid-twist was alright, since it spiked the plot a bit. The acting was actually better than I thought, or maybe it was just Will Smith not needing to act as much and let most of the CGI do the work. Some parts made me go lol, but…

CONS: They should have made it R-Rated and allowed the more “adult” parts into it. Kids these days (11-14) actually are more interested in this than Spider-Man 3. But for the weak sides, they definitly rushed the second act. WTF was up with the one-hand guy going all meditation with the other two prison dudes and saying “Get your power back” when they clearly we never super powered??? (If they did, the movie didn’t give a backstory at all…)
The origin/gods/angel stuff was better than running the movie with Hancock drinking and being better, otherwise we would’ve known how the movie played out from the trailer.

    Rating: 6.9/10-
Good concept and good twist, but failed to expand on both acts. I mean, it was done with the “reform” thing in the first 30-40 minutes…
Sequel? I would prefer a darker HBO prequel, but who am I kidding. This is Sony Pictures.

ETC: I never liked my superheroes in white and black. I liked them in color (Yes, horrible name pun joke).

  49. Gravatar

I never thought I was going to see Hancock, but I was bored yesterday, so I decided to go watch it. Wasn’t great, but very enjoyable. There are a lot worse movies out there.

My local paper gave it 2 stars out of 4. I think that score was accurate.

  50. Gravatar

I went to this movie with no expectations … It was the best of a bad bunch for the movie night we have once a week and then to come out smiling at the end was a great turn up.. If you can go in, get some popcorn and enjoy your 90 minutes without thinking too much then you’ll enjoy the flip halfway through and come out going hmmmmmm that wasn’t bad .

    Go see it.

  51. Gravatar

I give it a B+. Wish it had been an R, and a tad longer. I was sorry Charlize’s superheroine wasn’t allowed to be kickin’ ass a bit more (she was revealed so late in the game). I somehow managed to NOT have her true nature spoiled for me in advance, so the whole back end plot was a surprise for me, which upped my enjoyment level.

I know this is a bit darker than we’re used to in our superhero flicks, but I really enjoyed the very intimate feel in this film (lots of closeups and character moments rather than all giant set pieces and SFX). It’s a drama first, not a comedy…but I laughed quite a bit.

Bateman was incredible. The nice gritty/handheld work (which reminded me of Berg’s other films and TV show FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) was refreshing and intimate.

  52. Gravatar

No i’m not gonna watch this one. I do not want to finance Scientology.

  53. Gravatar

Just returned from the theatre. I loved this movie–it was great! Wil Smith can play anything. Charlize and Jason were fantastic. The writing was great, the music superlative, the action non-stop as well as the humor. I just do not understand where anyone could criticize any of this movie. Too short? Too anything. It was so good and so much fun! I never listen to critics any more. Nine times out of ten they are wrong. They have preconceived ideas are opinions that they shouldn’t bring to the movie in the first place. Ask you friends or if you like the trailers and the stars, go see it and form your own opinion–forget those d**m critics they aren’t worth the paper they write on.

  54. Gravatar

Oh my gosh soooooooooo bad. I literally threw my hands up in WTFery after about an hour. Will Smith you let me DOWN. And I own Wild Wild West.

  55. Gravatar

Successful or not (and it’s a July 4th Will Smith movie, so there’s no way it wouldn’t be), the only word to describe Hancock is: Mess.

Also, I think that people who write for movie websites are pretty much the only people who place any interest or value in what Nikki Finke and Jeff Wells have to say.

  56. Gravatar

Contrary to a lot of other people, I liked it. I didn’t really buy the twist, but there was enough other stuff going on to make it enjoyable to me. Overall I’d say there are far worse ways to spend $10 on a Saturday afternoon.

  57. Gravatar

    @marleen
Go to rottentomatoes and read the non-glorious reviews. If you think their points are invalid I commend your tolerance for mediocrity…I think.

  58. Gravatar

Did anyone else happen to read the script?
I guess I’m just a bit confused. So it was all in the kids head because he watched sex (while Hancock also symbolizes the fathers problems)? Meaning the title is a double entendre (Tonight, He Comes/ Tonight, He Cums). Otherwise I’m lost with that last scene, someones gonna have to help me out, please.

  59. Gravatar

Plot certainly did not have enough running time to explore everything they were trying to do, especially what some one else said about the guys in prison saying something about getting their power back, i thought that was just funny, but in any case I saw it and I enjoyed it, popcorn fun.

  60. Gravatar

No thanks. Not going to support Scientologists by seeing this movie.

  61. Gravatar

    @ProgGrl

Thanks! I’m glad the ending wasn’ spoiled for you, but you just spoiled it for me. You ever hear of *spoiler alert*? Biatch.

  62. Gravatar

@evan…I’m a bit confused: if you are avoiding spoilers, why in godsname would you come into the comment section of a post meant for people who already saw the film? Wha? Not a good plan, son.

  63. Gravatar

Why do people read reviews at all? You can talk about the movie and what you thought about it without giving away key points of the plot. That’s pretty standard fare. Since you’re the only one here giving away the twist at the end - and everyone else intentionally avoids doing that - can you not see that you’re in the wrong? And when you do give away spoilers, it’s standard forum etiquette to simply telegraph that with ***SPOILER ALERT*** tags! I hope next time you will take this into consideration. Thanks.

  64. Gravatar

While I do agree with you evan, I also agree with Prog. You should’ve known there’d be a chance you’d have the movie spoiled for you by coming into this thread. Don’t blame anyone but yourself for your ignorance. Hancock moves away because the closer they are, the more they make themselves mortal. No one dies but the ‘bad guys.’

  65. Gravatar

I don’t feel that any sequel should be made in the Hancock series because the movie basically solved its own problem in this first movie. Will Smith’s Hancock appears to be reformed and more acceptable to society, Charlize Theron stayed a happy home wife, and Jason Bateman is happy she’s still hanging around. With the exception of his hilariously unapologetic attitude in the beginning, Smith’s character was just another Superman knockoff. He and Charlize should have battled it out and that whole were the last two of our kind thing is quite cliche. Maybe Men in Black 3 isn’t a bad idea?

  66. Gravatar

Will Smith carried the movie. If it had starred someone else I don’t know. Im in agreement with alot of people that the movie was too short and not enough character development. The story was too rushed and I got lost in the gods part of the movie. *SPOLIER* If they are suppose to be together and attracted to each other and have been together before, how come they kept on losing each other for long periods of time? I didn’t think about this question till after the movie. Now I did feel the movie was fun but I will wait till the movie comes out on DVD till I watch it again. I just hope when it comes out on DVD there is a longer cut of the movie.

  67. Gravatar

    @matt
It’s a simple forum courtesy for people to put *SPOILER* alerts. I don’t think that’s asking too much. Everyone else here is following that etiquette - and that’s what I’ve come to expect from this site. I’m a long-time reader of /film and never had a movie spoiled before - until now.

  68. Gravatar

    @evan

That’s unfortunate but at least you had your cherry popped on a mediocre movie. Just be more cautious of these threads in the future until you’ve seen the movie. It’s here for people to discuss the film, after all.

  69. Gravatar

Not a bad movie at all. Anyone who can go to a movie and enjoy the experience without thinking it has to be great or it sucks should come out with a smile.

  70. Gravatar

Peter Berg’s shaky cam made my date nauseous and the plot made me nauseous.

  71. Gravatar

    PJ,

They’re going to milk this like the last tit on Earth.

I had the good fortune to see an advanced screening of The Dark Knight. I didn’t bother seeing Hancock in advance due to poor buzz.

Anyhow, I saw Hancock this weekend and I can say without hesitation that Hancock blows The Dark Knight out of the water.

    Hancock owns summer 2008.

    +

  73. Gravatar

Finally saw this today. I didn’t have a problem with the twist at all.

I had a problem with the way Mary wouldn’t tell Hancock the truth because she didn’t want anyone to find out. Then after Hancock persists she’s doing the “Storm” thing on his ass on Hollywood bvld. right in front of her husbands office. Ghessh that time of the month or what?

  74. Gravatar

    lol @ Zbert’s comments

  75. Gravatar

McLovin is right. if you ave few days to think about the movie, you will see that is was a good movie. 7/10

  77. Gravatar

the anti-hero concept is awesome, but it was ruined by the corny plot twist and ending. will smith and jason bateman were great though

  78. Gravatar

i could have done with some flashbacks, and maybe him starting to remember his past.

  79. Gravatar

Will Smith is a great actor, but this turkey stunk on ice
