Friends: The Movie (Cross Your Heart)

Not sure how old I was, but I remember reading EW’s “TV Preview,” drinking Barq’s on the couch, and I came across a new show called Friends. In that kid way, off one picture and a “skeptical” description, I knew it was going to be a hit. “Arm-chair executives,” we were labeled later. God, I hope this effing movie doesn’t happen.

A British tabloid reports that a big-screen version of Friends is indeed happening within “18 months,” due to the success of Sex and the City. Hey, 40-year-olds can still be friends in a genuine way, right? [koff] As long as everybody stays out of law school and blogs. The inside source provides a verbal mudslide of choice quotes, like this one…

‘What’s held back a Friends movie so far is that people were worried that Jennifer [Aniston] had simply become too famous to play Rachel again. …It really comes down to money, and I don’t think Jen has a problem with all of the Friends getting huge paydays for the movie.”

The Rembrandts await the call, as do a couple million people on exercise machines, and coffee shops. And the monkey (not that monkey)! Ladies and gentlemen, if this is the post-9/11 Big Chill, I hope somebody blows up the set.

Discuss: Friends, how many of us have them?

  • SUe
Jennifer Aniston is more famous then them all yet she's only been in one good movie....Office Space....which wasn't even a hit untill like 5-6 years after it's release. Also what the hell happened to that guy that played Joey? According to IMDB he hasnt worked in 3 years. How long can he live off his Friends money?
  • Cary
They were getting 1 million per episode towards the end, I think he'll be fine.
  • Christopher Marc
Wow and I thought the Sex & The City Movie idea was bad...lol..Considering the cast is making money on their own, it makes sense they want a movie....just bring the show back, they did it with family guy...
  • Bob
they brought back family guy because it got cancelled the first time and they managed to bring it back on air. . . idiot.
  • Christopher Marc
    isn't*
  • Ali
Guys, you'll be happy to hear that 'British tabloids' are full of shit. Literally about 10% of the stuff they print has basis in reality. When it comes to movies in production, they usually just hit and hope. I remember reading in The Sun - which, while not exactly a reputable newspaper, is Britain's biggest selling paper by far - that Steven Spielberg was to direct a new Baywatch movie.

I don't know what's worse - the horseshit they print or the mouth-breathers that take it as gospel.
  • Chris
dailymail? you get more "insider" knowledge from a guy working at blockbuster.

move along people, nothing to see here.
  • Geff
Last two posts are on the money.

British tabloids don't mean jack seriously. Think of them as Weekly World News or the Enquirer.
  • edc
please, God in heaven - don't let this movie happen.
  • SUe: you need to rent the indy flick THE GOOD GIRL before you run your mouth about Jennifer Aniston again. Seriously.

Cary: Took the words right out of my mouth.
  • Coral
Well, Jennifer Aniston was also in the Break Up, which I thought was hilarious.

Having said that, I don't think I'd see this movie. I don't really care if it gets made or not, and neither should you, since no one is forcing you to watch it and I'm sure there are people out there who have fond memories of the show.

I can definitely tell when Hunter has written an article :)
  • Andy
why do you guys even care if this movie actually happens or not? if it doesn't oh well, if it does, just look the other way. it's not like it's the fucking golden age or something...
  • Donivan
Hunter, very, very cool on how you used the group"Whodini's" song "Friends" as a segway for the discussion.Nice!
  • Captain Awesome
This show sucked. Might as well make a movie out of it too.
  • Albert Brodsky
I don't have any friends. I just spend all my time on /film. I've always thought of myself as a Chandler, witty with a third nipple.
Not really. I hope anyone linked to this dies a slow death.

I really hope this is true, I love friends and it would make them all, lots of money. Gives this a chance, it will be great! trust them!

Oh and as for Rachel, I think that she would return but she would be doing it for Rachel and the cast, probably not for money, since she has enough right now!
  • Daniel
It is true! The rumors are all true!!! There will be a Friends movie. I have the proof. I have a received a small excerpt of the script via e-mail. Here is a brief spoiler on the upcoming flick:

Ross and Rachel break up and get back together at the end of the movie.
Joey and Phoebe both act semi-retarded.
Chandler makes several sarcastic jokes, none of which are funny.
Monica acts neurotic and comments about how she used to be fat.
I cant wait, this movie is going to be amazing!

This is the best news I've heard in the film world in a long time. Holy crap, if they make this, it'll be awesome.
  • My initial reaction is that I really hope they don't do it. I enjoyed the show very much but I've had my closure and said my goodbyes. Upon further reflection 1) I don't really see this happening. 2) It's just a TV show/movie so whatever.

I think they should make a Golden Girls movie instead, but they'd better do it quickly.
  • IMDB had an article about this - that two of the actors kinda wanted to do a movie - that's it. no confirmations.

That said, there are a LOT of teenage girls out there who want this movie yesterday, and it will. Make. Bank.
  • adam
Why do some men react so badly when a film is made that may not be aimed at them? I saw it with Sex and the City and I'm sure it will happen with Friends if and when that comes out.
  • Thankyoufor
    i hate that show
    too canned
now if they made spin city movie i would totally watch that
  • Meli
UGH. Is this the evolution? Instead of having a special two hour
reunion episode the public gets a movie? Even though I liked the
show I would not pay to see a movie just like I didn't/won't pay
to see Sex and the City.
  • vadmspartan
Damn it, don't you understand the Brit tabloid was probably talking out of it's ass. But now that this news is all over the internet who's to say some studio exec won't see it and actually think it enough of a good idea to greenlight?
  • Surely this cant happen ! It was bad enough with the 'Shreks and the City' movie ...
  • J.D.
Spielberg IS doing Baywatch. He's adding sharks. Lots of sharks. And Karen Allen plays the lead.
  • Assume a Virtue
The only way a Friends movie would interest me is if it's a mockumentary about their post-finale lives. It's the only way to make a multi-camera, laugh track'd sitcom work as a movie.
  • evan
I can see it now...Friends vs. Seinfeld. You see, Phoebe and George fall in love, and then...WTF? Who wants to see this, anyway?
  • The Saint
If we can't trust the tabloids, then I want to know, did BAT-BOY really join the navy?
  • EsEs
If it happens It had better feature one hell of a story, something in the vein of gigantic orgy or everyone dies in a horrible mass murder at the hands of Janice.
  • J Butler
I for one will be disappointed if Seth Rogen is not cast in the role of chandler. :(
  • Lolgirl
well if they make it, they make it! i watch friends and i like the show mabey the movie will be really good! i hope they make it and if you dont like it, dont see it!!!!!!!!!
  • Clark
the hell with you people who doesn't like the show or even the upcoming movie( i hope) of FRIENDS... if u dont like it, juz shut up, it will not affect u anyways... but for us fans of the show, whether it turns out to be good or bad, we would still love to watch it... i really hope that its true, i'm sure lots and lots of people are going to watch it...
  • Friends movie rumors are purely based on the domain name registration of friendsthemovie.com by "Warner". But it's not... The proove is on my new site where I gather all possibilities of a reunion show or movie about Friends. It also explains why they would do it within 18 month (expiration date of domain name) >> Sorry guys!
  • Kev
if they do make aovie i think it should be like how they did Ross' wedding to Emily, make it look like an actual full feature length episode rther than a movie, but it wouldn't be the same without the audience laughing, but if it happens then great if not, it doesn't matter, the whole 10 series were fanastic, i think we can all agree on that one atleast =)
  • KaiiteeTx
    Its going to be amazing
the show was really funny and everyone loved it at the time.
but now your all calling it.
give it a chance, it will be the perfect end to the show having it on the big screen.
Friends was posssibly the best show on tv and if someone doesnt like it thats there opinion but half the population think its amazing.
    so its a blockbuster already.

CANT WAIT FOR THE FILM (:
  • Well no offence to some people but all you twats ou there who think stuff like "if they make a friends movie it better have a hell good story line" then try make a movie yourself that has a good storyline then. Make it a big hit, go on. Try it, I bet people will think its just as crap as your directing and your cocky comments mate so I would f*** right off. I bet friends is better than any of the shit you watch like your baby programmes or whatever and better than whatever shit you could make to so think about that then.
  • autumn
I loved the show. so most likely i would go see the movie, and if it did suck then i would be just as happy seeing them reunited.
  • liam
Aniston, Cox Arquette, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schimmer all want to do a movie. We don't know about Perry yet though!
  • Leo
I realy loved the show and I hope there will be a movie. And the people who think Friends suck are really stupid, 'cause it's the best sitcom ever!
