I love to see WALL-E get nominated for Best Picture. Actually I think it deserves a win.

Also, there was wonderful sound editing and mixing by Ben Burtt, he might even deserve a Special Achievement.

And there was a beautful score by Newman.

Most importantly, Stanton derserves a win for Best Original Screenplay. Beautiful storytelling, beautiful originality.

But what makes those voters discriminate animated movie?

Say Peter, when will we be expecting your review for WALL-E? I also recall you saying you would post your review for Indiana Jones 4 when it came out, yet I still haven't seen it. Care to enlighten us?

Out there, there's a world outside of Yonkers
Way out there beyond this hick town, Barnaby
There's a slick town, Barnaby
Out there, full of shine and full of sparkle
Close your eyes and see it glisten, Barnaby
Listen, Barnaby

Put on your Sunday clothes, there's lots of world out there
Get out the brilliantine and dime cigars
We're gonna find adventure in the evening air
Girls in white in a perfumed night
Where the lights are bright as the stars

GO WALL*E!!!

I didn't quite understand the whole soul criticism... But, I'm just saying Pixar changes the setting and characters, and keeps the same core plot. Sure, kids and their parents will enjoy it, and I probably will too, but it's quite a stretch to say a kids movie with recycled plot construction is the best movie of the year.

Peter:
Yeah, you're probably right about the backlash to the environmental overtones. Phil seemed to have some politically tinged bias in evidence (something about it being worse that Al Gore?). Funny though - I went and looked at his reviews for The Happening and Happy Feet - they both got Fresh ratings...

Personally after the disappointment of Indy IV and my lack of hype for Batman, this is my best hope for awesomeness this summer, and based on what I've read so far - I'm pumped

It should also be noted that Rotten Tomatoes has just put up an article called <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wall_e/news/1737449/critics_consensus_wall_e_is_one_of_the_best_reviewed_films_of_2008" rel="nofollow">Critics Consensus: WALL-E Is One of the Best-Reviewed Films of 2008</a>

w smith: the early days of Rotten Tomatoes was very different. There were quite a few people who got into the tomatoemeter that shouldn't have. But it has been like that in quite a few years. And the majority of the bad apples have faded away with time.

Jack: I predict it will remain above 90%, putting it in the top 5 of the year, possibly above Iron Man. Problem is the environmental message that is in the film might anger right-wing critics. But I think even then, its hard not to recommend this film. So while a lot of conservatives might take issue with the green message, I think the reviews will still skew very positive. We'll see...

It just got another negative review, down to 96%, a measly 3% above Iron Man, although I won't doubt there's time for it to regain what its lost

Peter, I stand corrected, and I'm sometimes surprised by the names I don't see there. But I can certainly say I haven't heard of 90% of the people who aren't in the "Top Critics" section

wsmith says: "almost any no name can get a review up on Rotten Tomatoes"

I challenge you to try to get ranked in the RT tomatoemeter. Its not easy. I have professional critic friends who review 200+ movies a year on professional level online websites and on the radio and have still not been approved for the tomatoemeter, and they have been trying for 2 years. It's actually surprising how selective they have become.

Hector: I will admit I am biased towards WALL-E, but I did similar posts the week before other films like Iron Man, and the opposite side of the spectrum One Missed Call and Hottie and the Nottie. Truth is, 54 reviews will probably only account for 40% of the tally, but its still a really good indication of where a movie will end up (and yes, I do track such things). I also think I make it clear that 100 possible more reviews will land by weekends end. This is an early tracking article, we'll provide an update later.

almost any no name can get a review up on Rotten Tomatoes and when you are the 1/100 or 2/100 person to go against the grain... you know you're going to get attention... I'm just sayin

if i ever make movies, id like to make an animated family film where the little underdog hero dies in the end. i bet i would get an oscar or some shit.. ill have to do it independantly or something to avoid the big studios trying to make it kid friendly... even though the bridge to tarbithia movie still got made with a big death in it.. I know it sounds cruel, but the happy endings are too predictable.
