WALL-E - The Best Reviewed Movie of 2008?

What movie should you see this weekend? Wanted is surprisingly good, and will likely beat your expectations. I can honestly recommend it…  but the clear winner is WALL-E.

So far the little robot that could has a 98% tomatoemeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 40 reviews. Actually, only one reviewer gave a negative critique. It helps to know that Phil Villarreal of the Arizona Daily Star also gave M Night’s The Happening a three out of four star review… Point is, WALL-E is the best reviewed mainstream release so far this year. We’ll see how it holds up after the weekend as 100-150 more reviews will likely be added to the database. But I’m sure it will remain above 90%. Wanted is currently scoring 68% on the tomatometer.

Best Reviewed Mainstream Releases of 2008 (so far)
1. WALL-E 98%
2. Iron Man 93%
3. Kung Fu Panda 88%
4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall 86%

  • GregoryV
only 98%? the other 2% should be stoned.
  • Jerry Merry Butler
Isn't that title a little premature?

I mean film isn't even officially released until tomorrow?
  • Christopher Edwards
Am sure this is a good film but WALL-E hasn't been released everywhere so I am taking this post as premature.

Wait until it has come out and see if this keeps the rating or better even
  • Bano
this year may be the first time that movies we expect have great reviews !!
  • Jerry: I'm sure you probably know, 90% of the professional movie reviews are released before Friday night, with a big portion of print reviews released earlier in the week of release.
  • charles
Well, not yet Peter. Once its certified fresh on Tomatoes, and high green on Meta, maybe. But if it has more reviews done than Iron Man it'll be for sure.
  • This is disheartening, as Phil Villareal is the author of the greatest line of pop culture movie criticism:

"Science has long theorized that Nicolas Cage would eventually overact so badly that his head would explode into flames. With GHOSTRIDER, their theories are proven right."
  • Dark Donnie
Forgetting Sarah Marshall was the 4th highest reviewed commercial film this year? Might have to check it out.....Wall E will be great, going Sunday
  • O
    @Dark Donnie

Sarah Marshall was great. Best thing to come out of Judd Apatow group since 40 Year Old Virgin.
  • Klaus Kinski
Peter, i thought you give a damn about the Tomatometer. I can remember the SATC discussion about imdb ratings.

    PETER

I was going to watch both of these movies tomorrow. (Wanted and Wall-E)

68% doesn't look like it's living up to expectations.

What would you compare it to, and if you could rate it what would you give it?

this movie is going to be the best movie of the millenium... mark my words on something biodegradable.
  • Jeezus: Fans of the comic will be disappointed because very little of the comic is in the movie. That said, everyone I saw it with liked it more than they expected. Is it on level with Iron Man, Spider-Man, Batman Begins? No way. Its not a great movie, but it is a fun popcorn action film. And I think a lot of people aren't expecting much at all going in, which always helps.

Klaus: Agreed. I do like IMDB's ratings (especially after there is a large sampling of votes after release), and while Rotten Tomatoes ratings are flawed due to the either Rotten or Fresh voting system, its still a great indicator of film quality. I just tend to agree more with IMDB user ratings as they are an average of users voting on a ten point scale. For example, on Rotten Tomatoes, if all the critics liked the movie enough to recommend it (say, 7 out of 10), a film could still get 100% fresh rating.

Eh, I'm not going to say I'm not going to enjoy Wall-E, or even that it's a "kids" movie, but it's definitely more family oriented. But it's fairly obvious that it will just follow the same Pixar plot - Unlikely hero overcomes incredible odds, and has a happy ending.
  • orange cinema
what rating is tdk gonna get?
  • w smith
Most of the heavyweights have weighted in with overwhelming praise. The guy that gave the 1 rotten is a clearly trying to get attention. He wants to be quoted as the one reviewer with the bravery to stand up against the masses - he made sure to get his review out extra early.
  • w smith
    re : TheDaftPunk

if you have no soul, that's your problem
  • Hector
that's a great rating, but it only has 54 reviews until now, compared to the happening which has 151. I can say for sure that wall-e will get good rating on the tomatometer, but as the time passes it wil get lower.

I just checked, and it already drop 2 points to 96%, which isn't bad at all.

I think that your over enthusiasm for wall-e made you write a very premature post. you need to come back to senses
  • big daddy
if i ever make movies, id like to make an animated family film where the little underdog hero dies in the end. i bet i would get an oscar or some shit.. ill have to do it independantly or something to avoid the big studios trying to make it kid friendly... even though the bridge to tarbithia movie still got made with a big death in it.. I know it sounds cruel, but the happy endings are too predictable.
  • w smith
almost any no name can get a review up on Rotten Tomatoes and when you are the 1/100 or 2/100 person to go against the grain... you know you're going to get attention... I'm just sayin
  • Hector: I will admit I am biased towards WALL-E, but I did similar posts the week before other films like Iron Man, and the opposite side of the spectrum One Missed Call and Hottie and the Nottie. Truth is, 54 reviews will probably only account for 40% of the tally, but its still a really good indication of where a movie will end up (and yes, I do track such things). I also think I make it clear that 100 possible more reviews will land by weekends end. This is an early tracking article, we'll provide an update later.
  • Excellent. I am looking forward to seeing this.
  • wsmith says: "almost any no name can get a review up on Rotten Tomatoes"

I challenge you to try to get ranked in the RT tomatoemeter. Its not easy. I have professional critic friends who review 200+ movies a year on professional level online websites and on the radio and have still not been approved for the tomatoemeter, and they have been trying for 2 years. It's actually surprising how selective they have become.
  • w smith
Peter, I stand corrected, and I'm sometimes surprised by the names I don't see there. But I can certainly say I haven't heard of 90% of the people who aren't in the "Top Critics" section
  • JackDurden
It just got another negative review, down to 96%, a measly 3% above Iron Man, although I won't doubt there's time for it to regain what its lost
  • It should also be noted that Rotten Tomatoes has just put up an article called Critics Consensus: WALL-E Is One of the Best-Reviewed Films of 2008

w smith: the early days of Rotten Tomatoes was very different. There were quite a few people who got into the tomatoemeter that shouldn't have. But it has been like that in quite a few years. And the majority of the bad apples have faded away with time.

Jack: I predict it will remain above 90%, putting it in the top 5 of the year, possibly above Iron Man. Problem is the environmental message that is in the film might anger right-wing critics. But I think even then, its hard not to recommend this film. So while a lot of conservatives might take issue with the green message, I think the reviews will still skew very positive. We'll see...
  • w smith
    Peter:
Yeah, you're probably right about the backlash to the environmental overtones. Phil seemed to have some politically tinged bias in evidence (something about it being worse that Al Gore?). Funny though - I went and looked at his reviews for The Happening and Happy Feet - they both got Fresh ratings...

Personally after the disappointment of Indy IV and my lack of hype for Batman, this is my best hope for awesomeness this summer, and based on what I've read so far - I'm pumped

    re: w smith

I didn't quite understand the whole soul criticism... But, I'm just saying Pixar changes the setting and characters, and keeps the same core plot. Sure, kids and their parents will enjoy it, and I probably will too, but it's quite a stretch to say a kids movie with recycled plot construction is the best movie of the year.
  • StarBlazer101
WALL-E will rock my socks =D
  • Out there, there's a world outside of Yonkers
Way out there beyond this hick town, Barnaby
    There's a slick town, Barnaby
Out there, full of shine and full of sparkle
Close your eyes and see it glisten, Barnaby
    Listen, Barnaby

Put on your Sunday clothes, there's lots of world out there
Get out the brilliantine and dime cigars
We're gonna find adventure in the evening air
Girls in white in a perfumed night
Where the lights are bright as the stars

    GO WALL*E!!!
  • JackDurden
Say Peter, when will we be expecting your review for WALL-E? I also recall you saying you would post your review for Indiana Jones 4 when it came out, yet I still haven't seen it. Care to enlighten us?

I love to see WALL-E get nominated for Best Picture. Actually I think it deserves a win.

Also, there was wonderful sound editing and mixing by Ben Burtt, he might even deserve a Special Achievement.

And there was a beautful score by Newman. Derserves nomintaion.

Most importantly, Stanton derserves a win for Best Original Screenplay. Beautiful storytelling, beautiful originality.

But what makes those voters discriminate animated movie?

    WALL-E FOR BEST PICTURE.
