Paramount to Skip Comic-Con?!

First (potentially) the actors, and now it looks like Paramount has decided to sit out of this year’s San Diego Comic Con International. A Parmaount spokesman told Anne Thompson that “The timing was off this year.” Most of Paramount’s upcoming geek slate isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until 2009. Paramount might still participate with some viral marketing, and with a presence on the show floor, but most of their big titles will be M.I.A.

This is a shocking move considering that Paramount/DreamWorks’ huge presence at last year’s con. The Iron Man panel was considered by all to be the highest point of the convention. Even Favreau credits the panel asjumpstarting the hype for the superhero film. The company also showed 20-minutes of Beowulf in 3-D, revealed Karen Allen’s return in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the now infamous headless statue of liberty poster for the then untitled Cloverfield.

I imagine that the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder will have some kind of presence, possibly an advance screening. But the absence of the big four properties - G.I. Joe, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Last Airbender, is a big blow to fans.

i didn't expect anything from bay & co, as they're early in the shoot - & there's no need to rush. but i thought for sure star trek would do something big.

"Paramount might still participate doing some viral stuff, and with a presence on the show floor"

The following comment contains language some might find offensive:

Don't lick my balls if we're not gonna fuck.

They don't want to show then they can keep their parlor tricks to themselves, too.

What the fuck?!?!?! That Iron Man panel WAS the bees knees. Especialy when Favreu (sp?) showed a "clip" from the new movie, and instead showed a clip from the original animated series... classic!!!!!!

But honestly, it's not the studios that make the panels awesome, it's the directors and old skool kick ass nerds like Favreu and Singer and many others.

Forget about them, Comic-Con is still gonna be awesome this year, especially with the free screening of Pineapple Express

You movie fans are ruining COMIC con! It's not movie con dammit. This might be the year for COMIC fans to get on their horses and haul ass to COMIC con. I loathe the fact that it's been turned into a movie fest. I went nine years in a row, I've watched it evolve, and I've watched it expand. I've also watched it become a gratuitous four day movie advertisement, complete with assholes plowing through throngs of small children trying to get a booth monkey's attention for a free Incredibles shirt. My wife was elbowed in the chest by a very rotund man over a stupid ass Punisher movie logo shirt. Movies have ruined the perfect place for a yearly COMIC fan sabbatical, a place where you could say what up to Kevin Eastman or Stan Sakai, get some great sketches, and discuss why rabbits make good Ronin. COMIC con used to be a special place, and film killed it. Thanks.

The timing is off becuase the bulk of their movies are not out until 2009? That's a bunch of B.S. The bulk of movies they promoted at 2007 Comic-Con (Coverfield, Indy, IM, etc) didn't come out until 2008.

Something's up...what's the real story here??

In my opinion this say Paramount doesn't want to spend
the money, so they feed the public some BS about not having any huge movies to promote, but 2009 is only six months away.
  • Funny, I just received an email from Paramount asking me to confirm who would be attending the Con from Screen Rant.

  • Vic,

Me too, but remember, just because PAramount isnt doing panels, doesn't mean they wont have screenings (Tropic Thunder?) or special events like the beowulf thing last year.
  • I *really* think they're missing out by not doing a Star Trek panel/promo. It doesn't make sense... the timing between Comic-Con and Trek is the SAME as it was for Con & Iron Man.

If I recall correctly, J.J. Abrams promised lots more Star Trek stuff next year at last year's Con. I'm sure he would be happy to return...what's the real story here?
