Spielberg’s The 39 Clues

DreamWorks has acquired rights to The 39 Clues, Scholastic’s 10-book fantasy adventure series which will launch on September 9th 2008. Steven Spielberg is considering directing the project. Scholastic is hoping to replicate the success of the Harry Potter book series.

Benjamin Franklin, Mozart, Napoleon and Houdini are just some of the relatives of the most powerful family in the world - the Cahills. Grace, the Cahill clan matriarch is found dead just moments after she has changed her will, giving her descendants the choice between $1 million or a clue. Yes, one of 39 clues which reveal the source of the family’s powers. The series will follow two young Cahills, Amy, 14, and Dan, 11, who enter into a race against other branches of the family to be the first to find the 39 clues that will lead to ultimate power.

“The 39 Clues takes creative leaps to expand the story experience from the pages of the books to multiple stages of discovery and imagination,” Spielberg said in a statement.

The books will come out once every two or three months, released over the next two years, the multimedia adventure will include a set of collectible cards and an online game with a $10,000 grand prize. If Spielberg were to direct The 39 Clues, it would be after he finishes production on the TinTin series and his announced Abraham Lincoln biopic.

  • ANGRY BROOMSTICK!!!!!!!!!!
let me guess!!! they are gonna cast a typical lonely white boy and have an all-white cast with one "magical black man" character. lolz.

Sounds to me like another lame attempt to capitalize on this "child fantasy adventure" phase.

    Harry Potter
    Narnia
    The spiderwick chronicles
    the golden compass
that other one that came out last year
    and now this BS?

Sorry Spielberg, I'll have to pass on this one.

Sounds like something the kiddo would be into...and well, I
suppose she's the demograhpic they're looking for. LoL
  • I am with the general consensus on this one. I can't find any reasons to be happy, excited, or amused by this genre. And there haven't been any REAL hit movies save the Harry potter series.

It is my hope that hollywood can begin to do less adaptations and more original films.

Bravo !!! I hope it is a hit as big as Potter. The kids need this type of thing. Get them reading and imaginaing all the wonders they can.

The books are pretty darn good. (I'm a 5th grade teacher, and read everything new that comes out, to make sure I can make good reccomnedations!) As for the first comment on here, hate to burst your bubble, but the premise behind the Cahill family in this series is that they have spread out all over the globe throughout history, and are therefore of a vast assortment of ethnicity! As a teacher, I'm excited about any good books that can get kids excited, and unfortunately in this day-in-age the best way to do that is often through books made into movies. Until we get our society back off of their couches and outside, I'll continue to be happy when I can get a 10 year old to pick up a book! (Even if they're only doing it because they are excited about the movie!)

Thank you!!! I am an adult that hated to read until someone made Harry Potter. I realized that not all books are Where the Red Fern Grows. I have enjoyed reading these books with my children. They are learning so much encluding that Franklin licked batteries...a very good 20 min laugh from my 2nd grader which made me and my husband happy to see him getting the jokes and liking the stories. Bravo Rick Riordan. I hope the other authors can keep the fire going. One False Note was not as good but still they beg to read it so I am happy!
