The Dark Knight will screen for select press later this week (we’ll be there), but a scooper over at AICN has already gotten a sneak peak. Tim Bisley compares the movie to The Godfather Part 2 and hints that Heath Ledger’s performance might be worthy of the best supporting Oscar. Here are a couple spoiler free highlights that I found interesting:

“The film feels more like a crime drama in a grand city scape than a typical comic book movie. It feels like Heat except Batman is Al Pacino and The Joker is Robert De Niro and just like in that film we have a great scene between Heath Ledger and Christian Bale across a table. There is also an element of a Greek Tragedy.. There is a vast sense of morality at play within the film.”

“The Joker is almost more of a terrorist than criminal. He is not motivated by money. He wants to see people suffer.”

“The run time is two and a half hours. It doesn’t feel that long as there is so much going on within the film.”

Please tell me tomorrow is July 18th.

I'm flipping out. this movie is going to be great!
Its funny that they're comparing this to Heat.
I just watched it and I loved it. I know Chris Nolan is going
to put on a great show.
  • Tom
It's allll part of the plan...
  • Im trying not to get excited (ala Indiana Jones)

But this news has made me shiver a little with excitement!

Why can't I get this excited about work or girlfriends?!! oh well...
  • LeBigMac
The few weeks before an anticipated move can be a blessing and a curse. On one hand we are only about three weeks away from the release, but during these three weeks we're all gonna have to be on alert for spoilers.

Peter, I hope you won't be posting any spoilers in the news posts. Heh

Considering this film is only one I have been truly anticipating during the past 3 years since 'Batman Begins', with the exception of 'There Will Be Blood' (gotta love PTA), I think I will no longer be reading comments and message boards, cause theres always someone who wants to spoiler the fun. Who's with me?
  • fanboy d
i wish like crazy the academy wasn't afraid to give movies like this oscars - look how it took them three films before lotr got the bigguns...
  • Captain Awesome
    Nolan,

You tease and tease and tease with this cinematic nipple of yours. It calls to me. Craving it fortnightly, to suckle on it like a starving infant!

Oh yeah, I want to see this movie too.
  • orange cinema
i never doubted nolan & co for one second. i hope heath isnt the only nomination the film gets, and it sucks hes not here to share this with us.
  • Floppy
The closer July 18th gets, the farther it seems. At least I'll have Wall-E, Wanted & Hellboy II to help pass some of the time.
  • ANGRY BROOMSTICK!!!!!!!!!!
Heath Ledger was always overrated. Get over it, people.
  • Vapor
    This sounds great!
Can't wait to see this movie.
  • @ Angry Broomstick!!

I have believed the same thing too...Ledger being overrated...I never liked him in anything and when they announced him as the Joker I almost wrecked my car. My thoughts on that have changed I as my impressions from the first picture released, to his first voice bit in the teaser, to actual footage of him in the TV SPots and other trailers...you actually see some talent as well as a vision of the Joker that is different and kind of creepy...and I do not know if Academy Award is calling but he does seem to bring something new to a character who is timeless....and that for me is interesting and worth seeing. With Nolan directing him he can't be bad either.

    Fused Film:

I agree with you completely. When I first heard that Heath Ledger would be playing one of the greatest villians of all time, I thought "WTF? Are you serious?" And then as they've released more and more footage of him, I've gotten more and more excited, and now I know that no one else could've played the Joker like Heath. I really hope he gets nominated. The Academy needs to get off their "high horse" and actually look at ALL movies, blockbusters and smaller films. I really think TDK will make it to the serious nominations.
  • Robie
Or you could have read this in wired a few days ago. but no worry's looks like its gonna be one of my favorite movies of the year.
  • Steven C
This is great news, having a comic book movie compared to the Godfather 2 is remarkable. Its looking like this could easily be the best comic book movie of all time, and proably one of the best movies this year so far. I think Im more excited to see the Dark Knight now that I was to see the Star Wars prequels.
  • LETS NOT RUIN IT FOR EVERYBODY. ALTHOUGH BOTH HEAT AND G-FATHER 2 ARE IN MY TOP FIVE OF ALL TIME ( ROTATES LIVE). THEY HAVE BEEN CORNERSTONES AND I LOVE THE COMPARISON. PLEASE, KEEP IT DOWN THOUGH, LETS NOT RUIN IT. THANKS FOR THE 5 MINS OF PREVIEWS THOUGH THATS COOL. REMEMBER NO OVERKILL... THANKS.

    "Here's my Card..."
  • Chris
I already saw this, but nonetheless it still gives me a boner.
  • Uh, comparing it to Heat and Godfather 2 is seriously going overboard. Hey I'm not saying it will suck, but comparing it to what is arguably the best movie of ALL time? Its Batman, it will be cool and really good but to rate it at the same level as Heat and GF2 is a disgrace to those movies.

On the mention of best supporting nod for Ledger. There shouldn't be a doubt in ANYONES mind that he'll get a nomination, regardless if he sucks or not, because he passed away. Winning it would surprise me, but nominated? Defintely.
  • Meli
The suspense for this film is starting to get grating...July 18th
is feels terribly far away even with Wall-E, Wanted & Hellboy II to
    see between now and then.
  • 790
    Its going to be massive......

    Can't friggen wait!!!
  • orange cinema
anyone figure out the sarah jayne dunn mystery yet? is she harley, or selina kyle? if they set it up for harley, then i think depp is the only person who could do justice to heath. however, since we've seen bruce kinda looking for love in some of the tv spots, selina kyle would be an ok set-up. i'd rather see them go ahead with whatever they had planned.

and yes, internet rumors are the only thing getting me to july 18!!!
  • Do they give oscars to dead people?
  • Heat...that bodes VERY well.
  • jbone123
@ everyone who thought leger was a bad choice...

Lets remeber what people thought when they said keaton was gonna be batman and until begins came out and still in some peoples minds(not mine) but some as the best potrail of batman/wayne to this day. I think bale is the best there has been and id hate to be the guy after this trilogy to fallow up him as wayne/batman and same goes the joker, leger will be sadly missed but id hate to be the guy having to play the joker next time around.

There really stepping up the ads here in LA. Lots of Dark Knight posters /ads going up bigtime!
  • duca
I am so beyond excited for this movie. If I break my boycott of the local theatre this summer, this will be the film to do it (Sorry Hellboy II).

I have to admit I'm one of the few people who saw Heath Ledger as the perfect Joker. I remember everyone was all like "Ah, no he's going to suck and gay it up!" and I was all like, dude, this guy can ACT. He's one of those actors who can become his roles, take on new personas, you know? So to me it was the perfect choice.

...and I thought he was sexay. XD
  • charles
    Yesssssssss!!!!!
  • i wish i hadn't read that review. it was, for the most part, spoiler free. but he hinted at what happens at certain points, a lot of stuff about the joker.wish i didn't know all that. it's going to be REALLY hard to avoid spoilers from here on out. we must be strong.

also, i got the impression from that review that the previews have only shown stuff from the first third of the movie. orgazm.
  • Meli
@duca - I was also part of the "Heath will be awesome as the
Joker" crowd. I can't wait to see the entirety of his performance.

And yes, he was rather easy on the eyes. ;)
  • That review has me literally shaking with excitement. July 18th is so close, yet so far away. And I'll definitely be seeing it in IMAX.
  • krackajap
I was never fully confident about Heath Ledger as the Joker, but I was never one of the ones screaming "omg heath is joker!! dark knight = fail!". I was willing to give him a shot with an open mind, mainly because I thought he was a good actor. I may have disliked the movies he was in but I believed the acting talent was there. My biggest concern was that he was too much of a pretty boy to pull this roll of but as pictures started to leak it was clear that his looks had nothing to do with why he was cast. It's a shame since this probably would have been the performance that would have started a new era in his acting career.
  • @ JT

Thanks and I agree with you too that the Academy needs to branch out and it almost seemed like they did when they nominated Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean. I think a post mordem Oscar would be a great thing and I wonder if it has ever happened?

Stop by my blog sometime man...www.fusedfilm.com
  • Chimaera
Hellz yeah people! We're taking it to the mattresses :P And I can totally see Depp as a new Joker. That guy is sick (and I mean that in a good way)!
  • 790
There will be no new Joker Chimera.

At least with the Nolan. Batman Franchise.
He's contracted for 3 films btw.

Not saying why, but no Heath took that role with him. I've heard his performance makes Nicolson look like Adam West.

Riddler is the next heavy and Bruce Wayne hates riddles.
    Blw me 746
  • orange cinema
uhh, dent is the next heavy, i doubt we'll see much of 2 face in this - in fact nolan has been pretty clear bout that. riddler doesn't fit in nolan's batverse, but i know he & jonah could find a way if they wanted.

i wouldnt rule out another joker...its not likely but i wouldn't rule it out because of a huge spoiler i heard - but i wont write it.
  • 790
Right on Orange Cinema we all have our sources..................

Reguardless this film is going to kick ass!
  • Sean
Whatever you do, do not read Peter Travers review of the Dark Knight. The bastard gives away major parts of the story as well as spoilers. He also claims that the Dark Knight is brilliant and will destroy all other movies this summer. But he only gave the move three and a half stars. that doesn't make any sense.
