Quentin Tarantino is on a hellfire mission, codename: Inglorious Bastards. This new BBC article implies that he’s not backing down from his earlier claim that the film—now plural!—will be ready in time for next year’s Cannes Film Festival. And yet, there’s not even an official cast. It’s now known that the legendary casting rumors over the years, from Stallone to Arnold to Eddie Murphy to Adam Sandler, were but a dream, though some of those guys could still pop up. QT offered some new details on the look and feel for his epic WWII-gone-Spaghetti Western…
“I don’t want it to feel like a period film. I want it to feel current,” says Tarantino. “I want it to feel right now. One of the things I have to battle against is 30 years of Nazi-occupation TV movies where we’ve all seen the big streets and the vintage cars and the Swastikas, and we’ve just seen that ad nauseum. This is a modern, in-your-face movie. This is not a TV movie period piece.”
He added that the script “doesn’t look anything like” The Dirty Dozen. On the special features to the new three-disc release of 1978’s Inglorious Bastards, QT also told director Enzo G. Castellari that his film is in no way a remake/rehash of that film either, he just liked the title a lot. So, we’ve got that out of the way. Nothing else was specified, but he sounds ready to go…
“You’re talking to a real happy dude right now,” said Tarantino. Adding, “I didn’t know everyone knew about it, so this is actually kind of very bizarre for me.”
That’s funny, isn’t it? Given that everything we know about the project originated from QT over the years. Given that Tarantino’s films are usually set in a perplexing and signature haze where the ’70s intertwines with the present, his use of the word “current” could mean just about anything.
Discuss: I still can’t believe it’s finally happening, wow. What do you think of QT’s latest comments? What are you picturing?

I picture this not making it to Cannens or maybe just the first film at Cannes.
Also not a solid cast as much as everyone over the years would like.
This film is going to be the next milestone for him and be interesting to see what will happen with it.

This is a good blog post, I have been ready to see this movie for quite some time. I cannot wait to see “his epic WWII-gone-Spaghetti Western,” I think Quentin Tarantino is one of the best story tellers of this generation. His modern artistic skills combined with his eye for classic directing has made some of his movies fantastic!
Keep it coming with the Big T. news!

Give me Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair and the fat disc set of Grindhouse first. Then I’ll go see your Inglorious Bastards Quentin.

What do I think of it?? I’m confused as hell. What the hell does that even mean??? Modern??
June 24th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I, for one, am skeptical of Tarantino’s ability these days. Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Reservoir Dogs are among my favorites, and Kill Bill was fun; Kill Bill 2 was over-indulgent and slow; I haven’t gotten around to seeing Grindhouse. Y’know, with his success it’s like he’s a kid in a candy store with Hollywood-sized budgets, and he’s fulfilling his film fantasies at the expense of compelling narratives.
Of course I’ll watch it anyway.

I agree… we really need the Kill Bill & Grindhouse DVDs first.

Interesting. I’m curious how he’s going to pull it off.

Can’t wait for this, but also want Kill Bill Whole Bloody Affair on Blu-Ray!!!!

How do you make ww2 look current?
This sounds like a trainwreck in the making.

The film opens up on Uma Thurman’s feet, then pans over to Rosario Dawsons.

Yeah Pete and that’s when I walk out and get my money back!

I’m with Indiefilm!
Also I’m not sure what I’m picture but Kill Bill displayed the design I think he’s talking about. It was a mix of old with new. But with a modern twist in terms of dialogue and themes.
For now I’ll just let the excitement tire me out until I read the next piece of news about IB.

My guess is more modern characters in WW2…er…something. I actually have no idea what he means. QT - WTF? Reservoir Dogs go to war.
Anyone have a guess about the music for this?
June 24th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Good question….Gocitizen
(IMO),,,,,
That’s where it gets tricky. 50 ’s music might work if he picks the right stuff.
But it would be boring.
If he uses 60’s, or 70’s music it will seem like a Vietnam movie. If I hear one more fricken Rolling Stones song I’m gonna scream. That’s one thing I really hate about Scorsese films.
Maybe he should consider a electronic orchestral sound , and use some cool rock tracks from the 90’s maybe some Killing Joke or P.I.L. ???

790,
Tarantino is really great with his soundtracks. If he uses any specific music. He usually picks really great obscure work. And usually strays away from most mainstream stuff.
June 24th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Yeah Captain but don’t you think he uses a lot of 70’s music?
He and Mike Myers have the same taste in decades.
Not saying his taste in music is crap, as I have no prob with that. But now that Gocitizen brought this up I’m curious as to what he will use.

@ 790
Killing Joke and PiL in Inglorious Bastards?!? Wow, I’d love to see QT’s war movie while seated in your head. Good taste in tunes.
I highly doubt QT would ever use the Rolling Stones for this or anything. He seemingly wants to avoid cliches. I’m envisioning music like Canned Heat, Johnny Cash, old blues and maybe some AC/DC. Then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if QT had this film(s) scored by one of his idols. The setting is ripe for it.

Thanks Hunter !!! Love your articles!
If there gonna do Ac-Dc don’t use highway to hell or back in black.
Iron Man , Maximum Overdrive ruined those.
How bout Stan Ridgeway. (Wall of Voodoo?) Shesh QT could even hire him to score the film.
That would be incredible of your a SR fan.
Danny Elfman, shessh that would be the draw of the film. Ok I’m getting way off here. lol.
If your reading this QT, take it, its free. Make it happen. ;-)

I’m just waiting for how he is going to work a Édith Piaf song really being about dicks or something equally awesome and classic.
June 25th, 2008 at 2:34 am
After thinking about it, I think the answer is pretty easy. The spaghetti western stuff mixed with various lifts from old WW2/Western films.
Kelly’s Heroes(Burning Bridges), The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven, etc.
I don’t doubt that he could find some pretty unique/quirky stuff from the 30s-40s time period as well. It might be a nice juxt to have a machine gun fight underscored by some big band stuff.
WW2 by Tarantino has great potential to be really good.

I’m picturing QTs mouth and hands moving really fast. That’s about it.
