First Look: Fast and Furious

USA Today has a first look at Fast and Furious, the fourth film in The Fast and the Furious series. The new film brings back the three leads of the first film: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Michelle Rodriguez. And for some reason that fact excites me, just a little. The series gets a lot of flack, as well it should, but I’ve always enjoyed the first film on a purely popcorn level. The new photos focus on Diesel’s return, although moviegoers who were subjected to Tokyo Drift might remember that Diesel returned as a ridiculous and unexplainable cameo in that film.

Paul Walker comments that “this isn’t Shakespeare, so we don’t take ourselves too seriously.” Indeed, but is there any chance the fourth film could be good? Probably not. I keep rooting for director Justin Lin, who has disapointed me countless times since I first discovered his 2002 indie film Better Luck Tomorrow. If you haven’t seen it, rent it. He has yet to fullfill the expectations he has set up in that film. I am sure he will someday, and I’ll be there to see it and say “I knew it!” It’s just a matter of how old I might be when that happens.

Fast and Furious hits theaters on June 5th 2009.

i think that all the fast and the furious are stupid just another way to get youth to get more speeding tickets and break the law
  • Gotta love the cars. Last pic there is the same car my father had, 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, dark green and all.

When, oh when, will Walker and Reeves work in a film together? They could have combines this with Point Break 2. Opportunity lost.

I like all three films. The second one when a little over the edge at the end, but I love all the cars, chases, and crashes. I mean who else is gonna put put a nissan engine into a classic mustang? I'm a big mustang fan. I own one. I though that was a lot of fun to watch.

Love the Fast and Furious series. Just good old fun. The 1st one was great, 2nd one sucked, 3rd was great.

So you take out the word "the" from the original title and it makes it a 4th film? Fast & Furious? Fuck that.
  • Alright...Alright...Alright, No riceburners yet

I must admit these films have always been guilty pleasures for me.

They're awful, undeniably and completely awful, total misfires on myriad levels, but the premises are always solid, I like virtually everyone involved and there's enough substance in each of them that I can take solace in what these films should've been or still could be in the hands of an estimable director.

But Vin Diesel, talk about wasted potential. His reps blew it. He needs to fire them all immediately and rebuild. Retrograding is not "career rebirth".

See for me, I actually saw fast and the furious 2 before I saw the first. I guess that explains why I like that one more but hopefully with the 4th coming out part 3 can just be long forgotten.

I think its actually a fad to hate the Fast and Furious series. Especially by people that take movies too seriously. It's ok to have a film every now and then that is a "popcorn flick". I'll be the first to say I enjoyed all three of the F&F movies. I don't think they are great by any stretch of imagination, and don't deserve to be nominated for an Oscar, but they serve their purpose... entertainment. So I'm excited for the 4th movie to come out.

I agree, the first one was actually a pretty solid flick. It also hit a niche interest at just the right time. Auto imports and tuning was in pretty popular fad back in the early 2000's with stuff like this, the Gone In 60 Seconds remake, and video games like the Need For Speed Underground series.

I don't think that type of thing is in heavy popularity right now, but I do think that many would be interested in seeing a "real" sequel to the original flick.

Ok let's see, these actors need a hit film badly. Paul Walker will take any garbage role thrown at him, because let's face it, he can't act. Michele Rodriguez can't either, but she has that Vasquez from Aliens quality that makes her kind of hot. Her career has gone downhill ever since she was written off Lost. I can see both of them coming back for this sequel. Vin Diesel on the other hand surprises me a little. Maybe it was those awful Riddick movies, or his failed attempt at comedy? I think it started when Fast & the Furious blew up, and then he made XXX, which was a hit. That's when Diesel got too big for himself. He turned down Furious 2 & XXX2, which basically killed that series. He wanted to do Riddick films, which were basically bad Sci-Fi channel fertilizer. Then he thought he was going to branch out, and sing and dance or something. The bottom line is that Vin Diesel can't really act like anything else but Vin Diesel. And that method has worked out for alot of big time actors, namely Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Cruise. But people like Vin Diesel, and he should take that to the bank, instead of trying to be this multi-dimensional actor, and fail repeatedly. Like Paul Walker said, "It's not Shakespeare." Vin Diesel may finally be wising up, but it may be too late.

The first one was good fun, I really think Vin Diesel made it what it is though, it was a really good role for him... the other two...well... lets say i haven't watched them more than once. But i wont write this one off yet

The first one was the best for me, the second was below average and i havent touched the third yet, becuase of word of mouth telling me not to.

But this might be good as long as they leave two and really leave alone number 3.
