Hostel 3 Moving Ahead Without Eli Roth

The franchise that floated “torture porn” into news offices this decade like a message in a bottle now looks to join the endless straight-to-DVD knockoffs it spawned. We’re speculating that Hostel 3 will bypass a theatrical release, but Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that early talks have started inside Lionsgate/Screen Gems to make a second sequel a reality. The series’ creator/director/spokesperson, Eli Roth, will reportedly not serve as writer or director on the sequel. We expect him to update his MySpace with an endorsement or a rant soon enough, and if so, we’ll update accordingly.

Last summer, Hostel 2 failed to reach $20 million at the domestic box office after a boatload of hype, and Roth later announced a big budget action/sci-fi film (not Cell) that remains under wraps. That news drew insta-press because of the PG-13 rating, leaving many outlets to report Roth’s detour from horror as the end of an era/”new low” for the genre.

Discuss: Interested in Hostel 3? Is there a “so bad it’s good” Hostel knock-off? Personally, I’m glad that the brightest days for hooks-and-meat DVD covers are behind us. What about you?

Modern Horror is terrible. Heck, I'm not even that big a fan of classic Horror, I just find the whole genre unappealing. I saw parts of Hostel, and "torture porn" is exactly what it was, apparently the same was true for the sequel, and I expect it to return in Hostel 3.

There was a Hostel 2??? Huh.

The #1 reason Hostel II did poorly was the fact a raw copy without edits and special effects touch ups hit the internet like a good month before it hit theaters. Someone who worked with Roth either got their hands on the copy and sent it out, or must have pissed someone off. I feel bad that Hostel III is going to happen without Roth. What ever happened to Eli Roth's Trailer-Trash?
  • Kip
the first hostel was great because it was so off the wall insane. Guy's forcing their girlfriends to sit thru it. Getting all your bros together to go see it. It became an event and thats why it did so well. The atmosphere around was bigger then the movie itself. The second one....not so much. Eli needs to watch Cabin Fever and remember why he is allowed to make films, more Cabin Fever less Torture Porn.

great timing. I'm guessing most people have had enough of this stuff.

just google the news stories from yesterday - "Klara Mauerova"

Seriously if there ever was a person who I ever wanted to make a horror film and it would be amazing. That would be Chris Cunningham.

His goddamn music videos alone creep me out and they're beautiful on top of that.
  • Oh joy.
  • REAL6
His movies need to die like he died in "Southland Tales" while taking a shit!!!
  • Robert
Send Roth back to the video store where he belongs.

    Chris Cunninghams horror? YES PLEASE!

DaftPunk, there's plenty of great modern horror. If you're just not a horror fan, I can't help you, but if you're looking for something with more depth and artistry try some of these: 28 Days Later, The Descent, The Orphanage, The Signal, Pan's Labyrinth, Sunshine. Some of these cross into other genres, but they all have depth that popcorn horror doesn't have.

Don't think anyone will notice his "touch" is missing from these films.
  • TheDaftPunk
I was more referring to the slasher/gore flicks and terribly lame plot/cheap scare filled films like Saw, Hostel, One Missed Call, etc.

I have seen Pan's Labyrinth, and I love it....But Horror?
  • Christine
Oh, god, NO! I'm actually a huge fan of Roth and his films, but this is a horrible idea. The second film told all there needs to be to the story. I really hope this doesn't work out.

    @TheDaftPunk

Can you really lump Saw and Hostel together with a movie about a killer cellphone ??...Granted they were campy but that's the horror genre in general..Hostel was playing more to those horror films from Europe and Saw was trying to be more of a thriller than horror... But I do agree with you Pan's Labyrinth wasn't exactly horror it was more dark fantasy...
  • Agony
Dark fantasy and speculative sci-fi are very small steps away from horror, IMO, which is why I listed Pan's and Sunshine. Personally, I like films that don't feel the need to cater to genres, if that's what the story calls for.

Is Alien a sci-fi film or a horror film? It's both. I was just trying to say that there's more to horror than boobs and blood (although, sometimes that's fun too).

This is a terrible idea. First of all, the only reason why I liked Hostel and Hostel: Part Two, is how fucking hilarious Eli Roth is with his dark humour. The story was actually pretty weak, and a third one with a shit director and screenwriter would actually be torture porn. I really don't want this to become a franchise like Friday the 13th or Jason or Hellraiser or Halloween or Jack Frost or Saw, where there are 87 horrible sequels. Roth shouldn't have sold the rights to the franchise.

Hostel is a movie that changed horror for me. It was a masterpiece of movie making that was a hybrid of genres. I watched it reluctantly of a late sunday evening on cable. I was quickly immersed in the story the characters. THat move scared me but held my attention. I had to get through it.

The second one was a little more silly and predictable. With the standard movie twist of blood relations and silly things of the like. Not a bad movie but can not compare to his opus of Hostel. I still think Eli Roth is a Great movie maker and have become a fan. I look forward to his next project.

Ok, I am so fucking tired of this "torture porn" bs. It's like America is content drinking prune juice and watching remakes from Japan. Has noone seen the horror classics from France, Italy, and Australia? Or New Zealand? (Peter Jackson's Dead Alive). So if your only exposure to horror is American, odds are you will never understand horror with a real point.
