It's just a possible wild guess. The fact that it's BURN-E as opposed to BERN-E makes me wonder if the name does have some meaning behind it. Plus there are characters in the movie like L-T that's a light, PR-T that does make-up, VAQ-M which is a vacuum, HAN-S which I think is some sort of massager, and D-FIA which is a defibulator and that shows that often a character's name in this movie do have to do with their function.
