I can not believe AFI didn't even nominate the sequel to Alien. Aliens has to be one of the greatest sequels and one of the greatest sci/action films ever made.

The Western Genre was the most disappointing to me. No mention of True Grit or Lonesome Dove. Boo AFI.

It was apparent that AFI had lost it with its "AFI's 100 Years 100 Movies". Not easy to create something so pedantic and bereft of movie erudition about moviemaking. What happened to the AFI that that made "Visions of Light".

And Badlands should have made the Gangster top 10

Haha. Yeah Red, it was the Beer talking last night.
Sorry about that.......

I thought "No Way Out" was a good dramatic mystery, kinda ? I guess it was more of a thriller. /

Ok 790, you lose credibility when you start listing every movie you ever enjoyed. I mean please, Ace Ventura?? Spaceballs????

Lebowski, Bryan, I think Eternal Sunshine is a brilliant movie and will become a modern classic but romantic comedy? This is a heartbreaking movie. Some comic moments like any good script but his pain tears your heart out....

That said, I agree with so many others - as I read I was thinking "Where is comedy?" (Animal House) "Where is action?" (Raiders of the Lost Ark) "And why in the world isn't The Princess Bride under fantasy?"

A Clockwork Orange is absolutely science fiction - the whole concept is futuristic society. However, Groundhog Day as fantasy? Ok, the concept isn't realistic, but isn't it more romantic comedy? Does it belong with Lord of the Rings and The Wizard of Oz? And Caddyshack would be fine in a comedy list but taking up a spot in a sports list that didn't include The Natural is wrong, just wrong.

Dear Peter Sciretta,
I too was amazed at some of the selections (or lack thereof) of movies on this list. I agreed with all of your side notes, except 1: Back to the Future is the shit! Okay, maybe it's not one of the greatest movies ever but it's definitely one of my favorites.

Time will tell the tale on Eternal Sunshine, I think it's ok for the AFI to wait a few years before acknowledging certain films, it should not be seen as an out and out slight. In 5 years will we still be discussing Eternal Sunshine? I tend to think so, and its very likely you'll see it on a future list. The Cream has a tendency to rise. It counters the tendency we all have to put the most recent masterpiece we've seen immediately onto an all time list. Let it age, like a wine. If it's truly great and not a passing fancy, it will get its due.

Eternal Sunshine is another example of a film that defies easy placement in one genre. It's a romantic comedy, however, it also has a strong Science Fiction vibe to it as well.

And action did not stop being a genre, who suggested it did? It wasn't used as a genre this time out, maybe next time.
